Abstract:We study the focusing Gibbs measure with critical/supercritical potentials. In particular, we prove asymptotic formulae for the frequency approximation of the partition function, which captures the optimal divergence rate of the partition function as the frequency truncation is removed.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new superfamily of divergences that is similar in spirit to the S-divergence family introduced by Ghosh et al. (2013). This new family serves as an umbrella that contains the logarithmic power divergence family (Renyi, 1961; Maji, Chakraborty and Basu 2014) and the logarithmic density power divergence family (Jones et al., 2001) as special cases. Various properties of this new family and the corresponding minimum distance procedures are discussed with particular emphasis on the robustness issue; these properties are demonstrated through simulation studies. In particular the method demonstrates the limitation of the first order influence function in assessing the robustness of the corresponding minimum distance procedures.

Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) initiated the study of focusing Gibbs measures, which was continued by Brydges and Slade (1996), Bourgain (1997, 1999), and Carlen, Fröhlich, and Lebowitz (2016) among others. In this paper, we complete the program on the (non-)construction of the focusing Hartree Gibbs measures in the three-dimensional setting. More precisely, we study a focusing $\Phi^4_3$-model with a Hartree-type nonlinearity, where the potential for the Hartree nonlinearity is given by the Bessel potential of order $\beta$. We first construct the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure for $\beta > 2$, while we prove its non-normalizability for $\beta < 2$. Furthermore, we establish the following phase transition at the critical value $\beta = 2$: normalizability in the weakly nonlinear regime and non-normalizability in the strongly nonlinear regime. We then study the canonical stochastic quantization of the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure, namely, the three-dimensional stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation (SdNLW) with a cubic nonlinearity of Hartree-type, forced by an additive space-time white noise, and prove almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure for $\beta > 2$ (and $\beta = 2$ in the weakly nonlinear regime). In view of the non-normalizability result, our almost sure global well-posedness result is sharp. In Appendix, we also discuss the (parabolic) stochastic quantization for the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure. We also construct the defocusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure for $\beta > 0$.

A microscopic derivation of Gibbs measures for the 1D focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Abstract:In this paper, we give a microscopic derivation of Gibbs measures for the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the one-dimensional torus from many-body quantum Gibbs states. Since we are not making any positivity assumptions on the interaction, it is necessary to introduce a truncation of the mass in the classical setting and of the rescaled particle number in the quantum setting. Our methods are based on a perturbative expansion of the interaction, similarly as in previous work of Fröhlich, Knowles, Schlein, and the second author. Due to the presence of the truncation, the obtained series have infinite radius of convergence. We treat the case of bounded, integrable, and delta function interaction potentials, without any sign assumptions. Within this framework, we also study time-dependent correlation functions. This is the first such known result in the focusing regime.

A remark on Gibbs measures with log-correlated Gaussian fields

Abstract:We study Gibbs measures with log-correlated base Gaussian fields on the $d$-dimensional torus. In the defocusing case, the construction of such Gibbs measures follows from Nelson's argument. In this paper, we consider the focusing case with a quartic interaction. Using the variational formulation, we prove non-normalizability of the Gibbs measure. When $d = 2$, our argument provides an alternative proof of the non-normalizability result for the focusing $\Phi^4_2$-measure by Brydges and Slade (1996). Furthermore, we provide a precise rate of divergence, where the constant is characterized by the optimal constant for a certain Bernstein's inequality on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also go over the construction of the focusing Gibbs measure with a cubic interaction. In the appendices, we present (a) non-normalizability of the Gibbs measure for the two-dimensional Zakharov system and (b) the construction of focusing quartic Gibbs measures with smoother base Gaussian measures, showing a critical nature of the log-correlated Gibbs measure with a focusing quartic interaction.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an anharmonic potential. We establish a dichotomy for normalizability and non-normalizability of the Gibbs measures in one dimension and higher dimensions with radial data. This extends a recent result of the third and fourth authors with Robert and Seong (2022), where the focusing Gibbs measures with a harmonic potential were addressed. Notably, in the case of a subharmonic potential, we identify a novel critical nonlinearity (below the usual mass-critical exponent) for which the Gibbs measures exhibit a phase transition. The primary challenge emerges from the limited understanding of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger operator with an anharmonic potential. We overcome the difficulty by employing techniques related to a recent work of the first two authors (2022).

Abstract:Fragmentation methods reproduce the result of the exponential scaling full system calculation within an error about 1kcal/mol. They serve asa robust linear scaling regime of quantum treatment for large molecular systems. As the response of fragmentation methods to convergence criteria in SCF iterations is different from that of full system calculation and the propagated convergence error is much smaller than the fragmentation error, the speed of fragmentation ab initio calculation can be further enhanced via loosening the convergence criterion in the calculation of each fragment without sacrificing the accuracy of the overall energy. Tests on single configuration calculations, geometry optimization and molecular dynamics simulation are performed.
Asymptotics of the optimal values of potentials generated by greedy energy sequences on the unit circle

Abstract:For the Riesz and logarithmic potentials, we consider greedy energy sequences $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ on the unit circle $S^1$, constructed in such a way that for every $n\geq 1$, the discrete potential generated by the first $n$ points $a_0,\ldots,a_{n-1}$ of the sequence attains its minimum value (say $U_n$) at $a_n$. We obtain asymptotic formulae that describe the behavior of $U_n$ as $n\to\infty$, in terms of certain bounded arithmetic functions with a doubling periodicity property. As previously shown in \cite{LopMc2}, after properly translating and scaling $U_n$, one obtains a new sequence $(F_n)$ that is bounded and divergent. We find the exact value of $\liminf F_n$ (the value of $\limsup F_n$ was already given in \cite{LopMc2}), and show that the interval $[\liminf F_n,\limsup F_n]$ comprises all the limit points of the sequence $(F_n)$.

Gibbs measures as local equilibrium KMS states for focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the study of statistical equilibria for focusing nonlinear Schrödinger and Hartree equations on the d-dimensional torus when d=1,2,3. Due to the focusing nature of the nonlinearity in these PDEs, Gibbs measures have to be appropriately localized. First, we show that these local Gibbs measures are stationary solutions for the Liouville probability density equation and that they satisfy a local equilibrium Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition. Secondly, under some natural assumptions, we characterize all possible local KMS equilibrium states for these PDEs as local Gibbs measures. Our methods are based on Malliavin calculus in Gross-Stroock Sobolev spaces and on a suitable Gaussian integration by parts formula. To handle the technical problems due to localization, we rely on the works of Aida and Kusuoka on irreducibility of Dirichlet forms over infinite-dimensional domains. This leads us to the study of sublevel sets of the renormalized mass and their connectedness properties. In this paper, we also revisit Bourgain's proof of the normalizability of the local Gibbs measure for the focusing Hartree equation on the d-dimensional torus with d=2,3 by using concentration inequalities.

Ergodicity of Langevin Dynamics and its Discretizations for Non-smooth Potentials

Abstract:This article is concerned with sampling from Gibbs distributions $\pi(x)\propto e^{-U(x)}$ using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. In particular, we investigate Langevin dynamics in the continuous- and the discrete-time setting for such distributions with potentials $U(x)$ which are strongly-convex but possibly non-differentiable. We show that the corresponding subgradient Langevin dynamics are exponentially ergodic to the target density $\pi$ in the continuous setting and that certain explicit as well as semi-implicit discretizations are geometrically ergodic and approximate $\pi$ for vanishing discretization step size. Moreover, we prove that the discrete schemes satisfy the law of large numbers allowing to use consecutive iterates of a Markov chain in order to compute statistics of the stationary distribution posing a significant reduction of computational complexity in practice. Numerical experiments are provided confirming the theoretical findings and showcasing the practical relevance of the proposed methods in imaging applications.

Abstract:We consider the Gibbs measure for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb T$, that was introduced in a seminal paper by Lebowitz, Rose and Speer (1988). We show that in the large torus limit, the measure exhibits a phase transition, depending on the size of the nonlinearity. This phase transition was originally conjectured on the basis of numerical simulation by Lebowitz, Rose and Speer (1988). Its existence is however striking in view of a series of negative results by McKean (1995) and Rider (2002).

Under some conditions on the mean semigroup, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the rate in the almost sure sense. Abstract:In this paper, we derive a strong convergence rate of spatial finite difference approximations for both focusing and defocusing stochastic cubic Schrödinger equations driven by a multiplicative Q-Wiener process. Beyond the uniform boundedness of moments for high order derivatives of the exact solution, the key requirement of our approach is the exponential integrability of both the exact and numerical solutions. By constructing and analyzing a Lyapunov functional and its discrete correspondence, we derive the uniform boundedness of moments for high order derivatives of the exact solution and the first order derivative of the numerical solution, which immediately yields the well-posedness of both the continuous and discrete problems. The latter exponential integrability is obtained through a variant of a criterion given by Cox, Hutzenthaler and Jentzen [arXiv:1309.5595]. As a by-product of this exponential integrability, we prove that the exact and numerical solutions depend continuously on the initial data and obtain a large deviation-type result on the dependence of the noise with first order strong convergence rate.

Abstract:We study the limit behavior of the solutions to energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We give a rigorous theory of the zero-dispersion limit from energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation to energy-critical nonlinear heat equation for dimensions 3 and 4 in both the defocusing and focusing cases by energy method. Furthermore, we also show the invisicid limit of energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation to energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation for dimension 4 in the focusing case.

Size of chaos for Gibbs measures of mean field interacting diffusions

Abstract:We investigate Gibbs measures for diffusive particles interacting through a two-body mean field energy. By uncovering a gradient structure for the conditional law, we derive sharp bounds on the size of chaos, providing a quantitative characterization of particle independence. To handle unbounded interaction forces, we study the concentration of measure phenomenon for Gibbs measures via a defective Talagrand inequality, which may hold independent interest. Our approach provides a unified framework for both the flat semi-convex and displacement convex cases. Additionally, we establish sharp chaos bounds for the quartic Curie-Weiss model in the sub-critical regime, demonstrating the generality of this method.

Abstract:We study the fluctuations of the focusing $\Phi^4$-measure on the one-dimensional torus, in the infinite volume limit. This measure is the invariant Gibbs measure for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It had previously been shown by Rider that the measure is strongly concentrated around a family of minimizers of the Hamiltonian associated with the measure, known as the soliton manifold. These exhibit increasingly sharp spatial concentration, resulting in a trivial limit to first order. We study the fluctuations around this soliton manifold. Our results show that the scaled field under the Gibbs measure converges to white noise in the limit, identifying the next order fluctuations predicted by Rider.
