Abstract:Relying on a two-measurement characterization phase, a gain profile model for dual-stage EDFAs is presented and validated in full spectral load condition. It precisely reproduces the EDFA dynamics varying the target gain and tilts parameters as shown experimentally on two commercial items from different vendors.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The focus of this paper is on accurately modeling and controlling the gain characteristics of Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs), particularly in the context of full-spectrum load conditions. The author proposes a two-step measurement-based gain profile model to more accurately simulate the behavior of EDFA, including gain ripple. In practical operation, the gain and tilt parameters of EDFA are crucial for finding the optimal operating point of the system. The paper first introduces the importance of Quality of Transmission (QoT) estimation in optimizing optical network capacity, especially for predicting system behavior. The existing open-source GNPy model has been widely validated but needs to consider the frequency-dependent description of physical layer parameters, particularly for wideband transmission scenarios. The approach of the paper is to design the gain profile of EDFA through dynamic gain tilt (DGT) parameters and define a constant parameter that is independent of specific tilt and gain settings. By using machine learning strategies from existing works, it is possible to compensate for gain ripple caused by different spectral loads. The paper presents a semi-analytical EDFA model that accurately estimates the gain profile for any gain/tilt setting by characterizing it under full-spectrum load conditions using only two gain/tilt settings. This approach has low computational cost and high accuracy, making it suitable for efficient QoT estimation tools like GNPy. In the experimental section, the paper comprehensively characterizes two series of EDFAs from different suppliers and verifies the proposed model. The results show that the model can accurately estimate the gain profile, with errors concentrated around 0 dB, indicating the unbiasedness and effectiveness of the model. In conclusion, the paper proposes a simple and accurate two-step EDFA gain profile modeling method suitable for full-spectrum load conditions, which has been experimentally validated on different vendor equipment. The characterization process of EDFA is simplified by evaluating the gain profile of all combinations of input power, gain, and tilt values using only two gain profile samples. This approach is applicable to both suppliers and end users.
