Abstract:The latest update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics stimulated the preparation of the European Detector Roadmap document in 2021 by the European Committee for Future Accelerators ECFA. This roadmap, defined during a bottom-up process by the community, outlines nine technology domains for HEP instrumentation and pinpoints urgent R&D topics, known as Detector R&D Themes (DRDTs). Task forces were set for each domain, leading to Detector R&D Collaborations (DRDs), now hosted at CERN. After an intensive period over the last months, seven DRD collaborations have been established, which are now starting to set up their collaboration structures and begin to work. One is still in the preparation phase. In this publication, I will give an overview of the set-up process and the current status of all DRD collaborations covering detector developments in the field of gaseous detectors, noble liquid detectors for rare event searches, semiconductor detectors, photodetectors and concepts for particle ID, quantum sensors, calorimetry, electronics for HEP instrumentation and mechanical and integration aspects.

Abstract:The Photon Detectors Topical Group has identified two areas where focused R&D over the next decade could have a large impact in High Energy Physics Experiments. These areas described here are characterized by the convergence of a compelling scientific need and recent technological advances. Key messages: IF02-1 The development of detectors with the capability of counting single photons from IR to UV has been a very active area in the last decade. We now need to pursue R\&D to implement these in HEP experiments by making larger arrays, improving their energy resolution, timing, dark counts rates and extending their wavelength coverage. IF02-2 New photon detector developments are being considered for planned future neutrino experiments going beyond the current technologies. Concept demonstrations have been done, and we now need to move from a conceptual phase to working detectors. The science for generation, detection and manipulation of light is extremely fast moving and driven mainly from outside our field. The HEP community would benefit from resources dedicated to the implementation of these advanced photonic technologies in particle physics experiments.

Abstract:Astroparticle physics has evolved as an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of particle physics, astronomy and cosmology. Over the last two decades, it has moved from infancy to technological maturity and is now envisaging projects on the 100 Million Euro scale. This price tag requires international coordination, cooperation and convergence to a few flagship projects. The Roadmap Committee of ApPEC (Astroparticle Physics European Coordination) has recently released a roadmap covering the next ten years. This talk describes status and perspectives of astroparticle physics in Europe and reports the recommendations of the Roadmap Committee.

Abstract:The European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Early-Career Researchers (ECR) Panel was invited by the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap conveners to collect feedback from the European ECR community. A working group within the ECFA ECR panel held a Townhall Meeting to get first input, and then designed and broadly circulated a detailed survey to gather feedback from the larger ECR community. A total of 473 responses to this survey were received, providing a useful overview of the experiences of ECRs in instrumentation training and related topics. This report summarises the feedback received, and is intended to serve as an input to the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap process.

Abstract:Traditional thermal neutron detectors are based on Helium-3 as conversion and detection material due to its large neutron cross-section. In light of the upgrade and construction of several neutron scattering facilities such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) and a simultaneous shortage of Helium-3, new detection technologies have been introduced. The most prominent one is to use solid converts with a large thermal neutron cross-section such as Gadolinium and Boron. Those materials emit charged particles when hit by a neutron. The technique then relies on detection and/or tracking of the charged particle, as in detectors of particle physics. At the same time, this requires an increase of the readout channels by an order of magnitude with the advantage of also increasing the position resolution by the same amount compared to traditional neutron detectors. A prime example is the Gadolinium Gas Electron Multiplier (GdGEM) detector for the NMX instrument at ESS jointly developed by the CERN Gaseous Detector Group and the ESS Detector Group. In this contribution, some of our efforts to transfer particle physics detectors and readout electronics to neutron science will be presented. We employed the VMM3a chip, originally designed for the ATLAS New Small Wheel upgrade, to read out a GEM-based neutron detector. The Timepix3 chip is employed in a neutron Time Projection Chamber as well as to read out a neutron-sensitive Micro-Channel Plate detector. Those readout chips are integrated into the Scalable Readout System of the RD51 collaboration.

Abstract:With the increased brilliance of state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation sources and the advent of free-electron lasers (FELs) enabling revolutionary science with EUV to X-ray photons comes an urgent need for suitable photon imaging detectors. Requirements include high frame rates, very large dynamic range, single-photon sensitivity with low probability of false positives and (multi)-megapixels. At DESY, one ongoing development project - in collaboration with RAL/STFC, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, Diamond, and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory - is the CMOS-based soft X-ray imager PERCIVAL. PERCIVAL is a monolithic active-pixel sensor back-thinned to access its primary energy range of 250 eV to 1 keV with target efficiencies above 90%. According to preliminary specifications, the roughly 10 cm × 10 cm, 3.5k × 3.7k monolithic sensor will operate at frame rates up to 120 Hz (commensurate with most FELs) and use multiple gains within 27 µm pixels to measure 1 to ∼100000 (500 eV) simultaneously arriving photons. DESY is also leading the development of the AGIPD, a high-speed detector based on hybrid pixel technology intended for use at the European XFEL. This system is being developed in collaboration with PSI, University of Hamburg, and University of Bonn. The AGIPD allows single-pulse imaging at 4.5 MHz frame rate into a 352-frame buffer, with a dynamic range allowing single-photon detection and detection of more than 10000 photons at 12.4 keV in the same image. Modules of 65k pixels each are configured to make up (multi)megapixel cameras. This review describes the AGIPD and the PERCIVAL concepts and systems, including some recent results and a summary of their current status. It also gives a short overview over other FEL-relevant developments where the Photon Science Detector Group at DESY is involved.
Physics Perspectives with the ePIC Far-Forward and Far-Backward detectors

Abstract:The forthcoming Electron--Ion Collider (EIC), which is expected to commence operations in the early 2030s, has already reached several significant milestones on its path toward completion. The core of the EIC physics program is the 3D imaging of partonic structures in protons and nuclei. The experimental detector setup required to enable this primary objective utilizes "far-forward" (FF) and "far-backward" (FB) detectors positioned downstream in the hadron-going and electron-going directions, respectively, from the interaction point of the EIC. The primary purpose of the FB detectors is to monitor luminosity and measure scattered electrons in collisions in the EIC, while the array of FF detectors is used to tag and reconstruct both charged and neutral particles that scatter at small angles. These detectors also enable a broader physics program than was initially envisioned, enhancing the EIC's research potential. The expanded capabilities have been a prime focus for engaging the broader nuclear physics community to build a robust groundwork for the EIC. In these proceedings, we will describe the FF/FB detectors and review the advanced forward physics program facilitated by them at the EIC.

Abstract:The recent direct detection of neutrinos at the LHC has opened a new window on high-energy particle physics and highlighted the potential of forward physics for groundbreaking discoveries. In the last year, the physics case for forward physics has continued to grow, and there has been extensive work on defining the Forward Physics Facility and its experiments to realize this physics potential in a timely and cost-effective manner. Following a 2-page Executive Summary, we present the status of the FPF, beginning with the FPF's unique potential to shed light on dark matter, new particles, neutrino physics, QCD, and astroparticle physics. We summarize the current designs for the Facility and its experiments, FASER2, FASER$\nu$2, FORMOSA, and FLArE, and conclude by discussing international partnerships and organization, and the FPF's schedule, budget, and technical coordination.

Abstract:The European Workshop on Photocathodes for (particle) Accelerator Applications (EWPAA) brings together experts in the field of photocathode based electron sources for use in particle accelerators, with the aim of sharing their knowledge and latest research and development progress in this crucial field of particle accelerator science. The workshop is convened every other year, and is thus complementary to the P3 workshop (Photocathode Physics for Particle accelerators) run in the USA. Consequently, there is a workshop focusing on photocathodes for particle accelerator applications convened every year, either in Europe or the USA. The EWPAA 2022 is the 4th meeting in this workshop series. The event was hosted by the INFN LASA Institute in Milan in collaboration with University of Milano between September 20th and 22nd. The programme was organised with 7 working groups, with each oral contribution assigned to the most appropriate group. This report presents, summarised by the work group conveners, the innovative ideas, the challenges and the main points raised by each of the speakers.

Features and performances of the DUNE Far Detectors Photon Detection System

Abstract:The Photon Detection Systems of the first two Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) of the DUNE Far Detector exploit the Horizontal and Vertical Drift technologies and are composed of 6000 and 672 photon detection units respectively, named X-Arapuca. The Photon Detection Systems will complement and improve the calorimetry and vertex reconstruction for beam events and the prompt light detection will enable the trigger for non-beam events, such as Supernova Neutrino Bursts. In the Horizontal Drift, the Photon Detection System is placed behind the anode planes of the LArTPC, while in the Vertical Drift it is located on the cathode, biased at 320 kV, thus requiring targeted solutions to power and read the X-Arapuca devices. The X-Arapuca is a photon trap with two light downshifting stages, where the light is conveyed to SiPMs with a large area Wavelength Shifting light guide. Its Photon Detection Efficiency, and consequently the Photon Detection Systems sensitivity to the DUNE physics reaches, is determined by the grade and coupling of its several components. The Photon Detection Systems of both Horizontal and Vertical Drift are presented and discussed in their individual features, with a focus on the photon collector components and on the performances achieved by the X-Arapuca units measured in laboratory and in the CERN facilities at the Neutrino Platform. Possible changes in the baseline X-Arapuca designs proposed to further enhance the Photon Detection Efficiency of both Horizontal and Vertical Drift are also discussed. The Horizontal and Vertical Drift scale 1:20 prototypes at the NP04 and NP02 CERN Neutrino Platform, instrumented with the baseline versions of the X-Arapuca, will be operated with Liquid Argon throughout 2024.

Abstract:The high-luminosity high-energy Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) will provide a clean environment to study several fundamental questions in the high energy and nuclear physics fields. A high granularity and low material budget vertex and tracking detector is required to provide precise measurements of primary and displaced vertex and track reconstruction with good momentum and spatial resolutions. The reference design of the EIC project detector at the first Interaction Point (IP), which was selected from three submitted EIC detector proposals, enables a series of high precision heavy flavor measurements. Based on the EIC project detector reference design, the newly formed ePIC collaboration is developing the technical design for the EIC project detector towards its construction and operation. The reference design of the EIC vertex and tracking detector consists of the Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) based silicon vertex and tracking subsystem, the Micro-Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) based gas tracking subsystem and the AC-Coupled Low Gain Avalanche Diode (AC-LGAD) based silicon outer tracker, and it has the track reconstruction capability in the pseudorapidity region of -3.5 to 3.5 with full azimuthal coverage. Further detector geometry optimization with a new magnet and technology down selection are underway by the ePIC collaboration. The latest ePIC vertex and tracking detector geometry and its performance evaluated in simulation will be presented. Details of the EIC vertex and tracking detector R$\&$D, which include the proposed detector technologies, prototype sensor characterization and detector mechanical design will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://XFEL.EU" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>) will provide as-yet-unrivaled peak brilliance and ultra-short pulses of spatially coherent X-rays with a pulse length of less than 100 fs in the energy range between 0.25 and 25 keV. The high radiation intensity and ultra-short pulse duration will open a window for novel scientific techniques and will allow to explore new phenomena in biology, chemistry, material science, as well as matter at high energy density, atomic, ion and molecular physics. The variety of scientific applications and especially the unique <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://XFEL.EU" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> time structure require adequate instrumentation to be developed in order to exploit the full potential of the light source. To make optimal use of the unprecedented capabilities of the European XFEL and master these vast technological challenges, the European XFEL GmbH has started a detector R&D program. The technology concepts of the detector system presently under development are complementary in their performance and will cover the requirements of a large fraction of the scientific applications envisaged for the <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://XFEL.EU" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> facility. Abstract:Since its inception, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has significantly advanced particle physics and will continue to do so in the context of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) program to collect $3000$ fb$^{-1}$ by the end of 2041. The particle physics community worldwide is discussing which future collider could follow in the footsteps of the LHC and uncover yet inaccessible phenomena. To foster the discussion on this important topic among the young particle physicist community, the Early-Career Researchers (ECR) panel of the European Committee for Future Colliders (ECFA) has organized the Future Colliders for Early-Career Researchers workshop at CERN in September 2023. This document aims to summarise this event and present the ECR perspective, outline the key questions that came up during the discussions, and explore how ECRs can influence the decision process of future colliders community and beyond.

Abstract:With the broadening landscape of proposals for future Higgs, top and electroweak physics factories, detector diversity as well as the reach and depth of physics analysis increase. One emerging topic of renewed interest is particle identification (PID). This paper highlights the available technology options and the physics need for dedicated PID. It introduces a new framework to perform a coherent PID assessment across the different future collider proposals, called Comprehensive PID (CPID). Its structure is laid out, and examples are shown, which demonstrate the power and flexibility of this approach.

Abstract:This note describes a prototype particle tracking detector constructed with 1 mm plastic scintillating fibres with a 64 channel Hamamatsu H8500 flat-panel multi-anode photomultiplier readout. Cosmic ray tracks from an array of 11 gas-filled drift tubes were matched to signals in the scintillating fibres in order to measure the resolution and efficiency of tracks reconstructed in the fibre-based tracker. A GEANT4 detector simulation was also developed to compare cosmic ray data with MC results and is discussed in the note. Using the parameters measured in this experimental setup, modified fibre tracker designs are suggested to improve resolution and efficiency in future prototypes to meet modern detector specifications.

Abstract:The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will be the next frontier project of nuclear physics in the United States. It is planned to be built in the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in close collaboration with Jefferson Lab. One of the key requirement for the EIC central detector is excellent particle identification (PID). A detector using the Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle, with a radial size of only 7-8~cm, is a very attractive solution for identification of the hadrons in the final state. The R$\&$D program performed by the EIC PID collaboration (eRD14) is focused on designing a high-performance DIRC (hpDIRC) detector that would extend the momentum coverage well beyond the state-of-the-art 3 standard deviations or more separation of $\pi/K$ up to 6~GeV/$c$, $e/\pi$ up to 1.8~GeV/$c$, and $p/K$ up to 10~GeV/$c$. Key components of the hpDIRC detector are a 3-layer compound lens and small pixel-size photo-sensors. This article describes the status of the high-performance DIRC R$\&$D for the EIC detector, with a focus on efforts towards developing and validating the radiation hard 3-layer lens.

Abstract:The performance of a scintillating fiber detector prototype for tracking under high rate conditions is investigated. A spatial resolution of about100 micron is aimed for the detector. Further demands are low occupancy and radiation hardness up to 1 Mrad/year. Fibers with different radii and different wavelengths of the scintillation light from different producers have been extensively tested concerning light output, attenuation length and radiation hardness, with and without coupling them to light guides of different length and diameter. In a testrun at a 3 GeV electron beam the space dependent efficiency and spatial resolution of fiber bundels were measured by means of two external reference detectors with a precision of 50 micron. The light output profile across fiber roads has been determined with the same accuracy. Different technologies were adopted for the construction of tracker modules consisting of 14 layers of 0.5 mm fibers and 0.7 mm pitch. A winding technology provides reliable results to produce later fiber modules of about 25 cm x 25 cm area. We conclude that on the basis of these results a fiber tracker for high rate conditions can be built.
