Abstract:Algorithms used for the reconstruction and identification of electrons in the central region of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented in this paper; these algorithms are used in ATLAS physics analyses that involve electrons in the final state and which are based on the 2015 and 2016 proton-proton collision data produced by the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The performance of the electron reconstruction, identification, isolation, and charge identification algorithms is evaluated in data and in simulated samples using electrons from $Z\rightarrow ee$ and $J/\psi\rightarrow ee$ decays. Typical examples of combinations of electron reconstruction, identification, and isolation operating points used in ATLAS physics analyses are shown.

Electron and photon efficiencies in LHC Run 2 with the ATLAS experiment

Abstract:Precision measurements of electron reconstruction, identification, and isolation efficiencies and photon identification efficiencies are presented. They use the full Run 2 data of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the ATLAS experiment during the years 2015-2018. The measured electron identification efficiencies have uncertainties that are around 30%-50% smaller than the previous Run 2 results due to an improved methodology and the inclusion of more data. A better pile-up subtraction method leads to electron isolation efficiencies that are more independent of the amount of pile-up activity. Updated photon identification efficiencies are also presented, using the full Run 2 data. When compared to the previous measurement, a 30%-40% smaller uncertainty is observed on the photon identification efficiencies, thanks to the increased amount of available data.

Abstract:The ALICE experiment at LHC will detect and identify prompt photons and light neutral-mesons with the PHOS detector and the additional EMCal electromagnetic calorimeter. Charged particles will be detected and identified by the central tracking system. In this article, the possibility of studying the interaction of jets with the nuclear medium, using prompt photons as a tool to tag jets, is investigated by simulations. New methods to identify prompt photon-jet events and to distinguish them from the jet–jet background are presented.

Abstract:Top quark production in association with a photon offers a unique test ground for the standard model predictions, as it is sensitive to the top-photon coupling. These processes are rare when compared to standard top pair production, however the large amounts of data delivered by the LHC open the window to precise measurements. This talk covered the recent inclusive and differential measurements of top quark single and pair production in association with a photon, by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Potential modifications to the top-photon couplings with respect to the standard model predictions are also explored using the standard model effective field theory.

Abstract:Relativistic heavy-ion beams at the LHC are accompanied by a large flux of equivalent photons, leading to multiple photon-induced processes. This proceeding presents searches for physics beyond the Standard Model enabled by photon-photon processes in both di-tau and diphoton final states. The tau-pair production measurements can constrain the tau lepton's anomalous magnetic dipole moment (g-2), and a recent ATLAS measurement using muonic decays of tau leptons in association with electrons and tracks provides one of the most stringent limits available to date. Similarly, light-by-light scattering proceeds via loop diagrams, which can contain particles not yet directly observed. Thus, high statistics measurements of light-by-light scattering provide a precise and unique opportunity to investigate extensions of the Standard Model, such as the presence of axion-like particles.

Abstract:Photon-tagged correlations may be useful to determine how the dense partonic medium produced in heavy-ion collisions affects the fragmentation of high-energy quarks and gluons into a leading hadron. In these proceedings, I discuss the kinematic requirements for the hadron and the prompt photon transverse momentum cuts. A case study at LHC energy, tagging on and photons, is then briefly examined.

Abstract:The production of jets and prompt isolated photons at hadron colliders provides stringent tests of perturbative QCD. The latest measurements performed by the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC are presented in these proceedings. The inclusive prompt-photon production is measured for two distinct photon isolation cones, $R = 0.2$ and $0.4$, as well as for their ratio. This measurement is sensitive to the gluon parton density distribution in the proton. In addition, a measurement of variables probing the properties of the multijet energy flow which are used to determine the strong coupling constant is presented. These measurements are compared to state-of-the-art NLO and NNLO predictions. Lastly, a measurement of new event-shape jet observables defined in terms of reference geometries with cylindrical and circular symmetries using the energy mover's distance is discussed.

Abstract:The ALICE Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) has been designed to measure the photon spectrum produced in pp and AA collisions at LHC over a broad transverse momentum range from 0.5–100 GeV/c. We present a study on the matching of charged tracks, detected by the ALICE central tracking detectors, with clusters of hit PHOS elements. Matching efficiency and contamination due to false matches have been deduced for charged pions, muons and electrons. The study indicates also that material from other detectors in front of PHOS disturbs the photon detection.

Abstract:One of the challenges of collider physics is to unambiguously associate detector based objects with the corresponding elementary physics objects. A particular example is the association of calorimeter-based objects such as "jets", identified with a standard (IR-safe) jet algorithm, with the underlying physics objects, which may be QCD-jets (arising from a scattered parton), electrons, photons and, as discussed here, photon-jets (a group of collinear photons). This separation is especially interesting in the context of Higgs searches, where the signal includes both di-photon (in the Standard Model) and di-photon-jet decays (in a variety of Beyond the Standard Model scenarios), while QCD provides an ever-present background. Here we describe the implementation of techniques from the rapidly evolving area of jet-substructure studies to not only enhance the more familiar photon-QCD separation, but also separately distinguish photon-jets, i.e., separate usual jets into three categories: single photons, photon-jets and QCD. The efficacy of these techniques for separation is illustrated through studies of simulated data.

Identified particles in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector

Abstract:The ALICE experiment has been taking data since 2009, with proton and lead beams. In this paper, the different particle identification techniques used by the experiment are briefly reviewed. The current results on identified particle spectra in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 900 \mathrm{GeV}$ and 7 TeV, and in Pb-Pb collisions at $\snn = 2.76 \mathrm{TeV}$ are summarized. In particular, the energy dependence of the spectral shapes and particle ratios in pp collisions is discussed and the results are compared to previous experiments and commonly used Monte Carlo models. The baryon/meson ratio $\Lambda/K^0_S$ is studied in Pb-Pb collisions as a function of transverse momentum and centrality, and it is compared to previous results. The evolution of the particle spectra in Pb-Pb with collision centrality is compared to measurements at lower energies and discussed in the context of thermal and hydrodynamical models.

Abstract:We present a new publicly available dataset that contains simulated data of a novel calorimeter to be installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This detector will have more than six-million channels with each channel capable of position, ionisation and precision time measurement. Reconstructing these events in an efficient way poses an immense challenge which is being addressed with the latest machine learning techniques. As part of this development a large prototype with 12,000 channels was built and a beam of high-energy electrons incident on it. Using machine learning methods we have reconstructed the energy of incident electrons from the energies of three-dimensional hits, which is known to some precision. By releasing this data publicly we hope to encourage experts in the application of machine learning to develop efficient and accurate image reconstruction of these electrons.

Abstract:We construct a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on the recent NNPDF4.0 PDF set, that also include a photon PDF. The photon PDF is constructed using the LuxQED formalism, while QED evolution accounting for O(alpha), O(alpha alphas) and O(alpha^2) corrections is implemented and benchmarked by means of the EKO code. We investigate the impact of QED effects on NNPDF4.0, and compare our results both to our previous NNPDF3.1QED PDF set and to other recent PDF sets that include the photon. We assess the impact of photon-initiated processes and electroweak corrections on a variety of representative LHC processes, and find that they can reach the 5% level in vector boson pair production at large invariant mass.

Abstract:This paper presents the electron and photon energy calibration obtained with the ATLAS detector using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC proton-proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV between 2015 and 2018. Methods for the measurement of electron and photon energies are outlined, along with the current knowledge of the passive material in front of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter. The energy calibration steps are discussed in detail, with emphasis on the improvements introduced in this paper. The absolute energy scale is set using a large sample of $Z$-boson decays into electron-positron pairs, and its residual dependence on the electron energy is used for the first time to further constrain systematic uncertainties. The achieved calibration uncertainties are typically 0.05% for electrons from resonant $Z$-boson decays, 0.4% at $E_\text{T}\sim 10$ GeV, and 0.3% at $E_\text{T}\sim 1$ TeV; for photons at $E_\text{T}\sim 60$ GeV, they are 0.2% on average. This is more than twice as precise as the previous calibration. The new energy calibration is validated using $J/\psi \to ee$ and radiative $Z$-boson decays.

Abstract:Prompt photons are a powerful tool to study heavy ion collisions. Their production rates provide access to the initial state parton distribution functions and also provide a means to calibrate the expected energy of jets that are produced in the medium. The ATLAS detector measures photons with its hermetic, longitudinally segmented calorimeter, which gives excellent spatial and energy resolutions, and detailed information about the shower shape of each measured photon. This provides significant rejection against the expected background from the decays of neutral pions in jets. Rejection against jet fragmentation products is further enhanced by requiring candidate photons to be isolated. First results on the spectra of isolated prompt photons from a dataset with an integrated luminosity of approximately 0.13 nb^-1 of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV are shown as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. The measured spectra are compared to expectations from perturbative QCD calculations.

Abstract:The dynamics of isolated-photon plus one-, two- and three-jet production in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jets cross sections are presented as functions of the photon and jet transverse momenta. The cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the photon and the jets, the azimuthal angle between the jets, the photon-jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon-jet centre-of-mass system are presented. The pattern of QCD radiation around the photon and the leading jet is investigated by measuring jet production in an annular region centred on each object; enhancements are observed around the leading jet with respect to the photon in the directions towards the beams. The experimental measurements are compared to several different theoretical calculations, and overall a good description of the data is found.
