Abstract:We propose some general growth conditions on the function $% f=f\left( x,\xi \right) $, including the so-called natural growth, or polynomial, or $p,q-$growth conditions, or even exponential growth, in order to obtain that any local minimizer of the energy integral $\;\int_{\Omega }f\left( x,Du\right) dx\,$ is locally Lipschitz continuous in $\Omega $. In fact this is the fundamental step for further regularity: the local boundedness of the gradient of any Lipschitz continuous local minimizer a-posteriori makes irrelevant the behavior of the integrand $f\left( x,\xi \right) $ as $\left\vert \xi \right\vert \rightarrow +\infty $; i.e., the general growth conditions a posteriori are reduced to a standard growth, with the possibility to apply the classical regularity theory. In other words, we reduce some classes of \textit{non-uniform} elliptic variational problems to a context of uniform ellipticity.

Abstract:We study local regularity properties of local minimizer of scalar integral functionals with controlled $(p,q)$-growth in the two-dimensional plane. We establish Lipschitz continuity for local minimizer under the condition $1<p\leq q<\infty$ with $q<3p$ which improve upon the classical results valid in the regime $q<2p$. Along the way, we establish an $L^\infty$-$L^2$-estimate for solutions of linear uniformly elliptic equations in the plane which is optimal with respect to the ellipticity contrast of the coefficients.

Abstract:We study the local boundedness of minimizers of non uniformly elliptic integral functionals with a suitable anisotropic growth condition. More precisely, the growth condition of the integrand function from below involves different powers of the partial derivatives of u and some monomial weights with that may degenerate to zero. Otherwise from above it is controlled by a q power of the modulus of the gradient of u with and an unbounded weight . The main tool in the proof is an anisotropic Sobolev inequality with respect to the weights .

Abstract:We prove local Lipschitz regularity for local minimiser of \[ W^{1,1}(\Omega)\ni v\mapsto \int_\Omega F(Dv)\, dx \] where $\Omega\subseteq {\mathbb R}^N$, $N\ge 2$ and $F:{\mathbb R}^N\to {\mathbb R}$ is a quasiuniformly convex integrand in the sense of Kovalev and Maldonado, i.e. a convex $C^1$-function such that the ratio between the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of $D^2F$ is essentially bounded. This class of integrands inculdes the standard singular/degenerate functions $F(z)=|z|^p$ for any $p>1$ and arises naturally as the closure, with respect to a natural convergence, of the strongly elliptic integrands of the Calculus of Variations.

Abstract:In this work we establish the optimal Lipschitz regularity for non-negative almost minimizers of the one-phase Bernoulli-type functional where is a bounded domain and is a Young function with satisfying the Lieberman's classical conditions. Moreover, of independent mathematical interest, we also address a Höder regularity characterization via Campanato-type estimates in the context of Orlicz modulars, which is new for such a class of non-standard growth functionals.

Abstract:We study the minimization of convex, variational integrals of linear growth among all functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed boundary values (or its equivalent formulation as a boundary value problem for a degenerately elliptic Euler--Lagrange equation). Due to insufficient compactness properties of these Dirichlet classes, the existence of solutions does not follow in a standard way by the direct method in the calculus of variations and in fact might fail, as it is well-known already for the non-parametric minimal surface problem. Assuming radial structure, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the integrand such that the Dirichlet problem is in general solvable, in the sense that a Lipschitz solution exists for any regular domain and all prescribed regular boundary values, via the construction of appropriate barrier functions in the tradition of Serrin's paper [19].

Abstract:We prove the first regularity theorem for the free boundary of solutions to shape optimization problems involving integral functionals, for which the energy of a domain Ω is obtained as the integral of a cost function j(u, x) depending on the solution u of a certain PDE problem on Ω . The main feature of these functionals is that the minimality of a domain Ω cannot be translated into a variational problem for a single (real or vector valued) state function. In this paper we focus on the case of affine cost functions j ( u , x ) = - g ( x ) u + Q ( x ) , where u is the solution of the PDE - Δ u = f with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We obtain the Lipschitz continuity and the non-degeneracy of the optimal u from the inwards/outwards optimality of Ω and then we use the stability of Ω with respect to variations with smooth vector fields in order to study the blow-up limits of the state function u. By performing a triple consecutive blow-up, we prove the existence of blow-up sequences converging to homogeneous stable solution of the one-phase Bernoulli problem and according to the blow-up limits, we decompose ∂ Ω into a singular and a regular part. In order to estimate the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of ∂ Ω we give a new formulation of the notion of stability for the one-phase problem, which is preserved under blow-up limits and allows to develop a dimension reduction principle. Finally, by combining a higher order Boundary Harnack principle and a viscosity approach, we prove C ∞ regularity of the regular part of the free boundary when the data are smooth.

Abstract:We establish the higher fractional differentiability for the minimizers of non-autonomous integral functionals of the form \begin{equation} \mathcal{F}(u,\Omega):=\int_\Omega \left[ f(x,Du)- g \cdot u \right] dx , \notag \end{equation} under $(p,q)$-growth conditions. Besides a suitable differentiability assumption on the partial map $x \mapsto D_\xi f(x,\xi)$, we do not need to assume any differentiability assumption on the function $g$. Moreover, we show that the higher differentiability result holds true also assuming strict convexity and growth conditions on $f$ only at infinity.

We prove that bounded local minimizers are locally Lipschitz. No restriction on the ratio between the highest and the lowest growth rates are needed. Abstract:A regularity result for free-discontinuity energies defined on the space $SBV^{p(\cdot)}$ of special functions of bounded variation with variable exponent is proved, under the assumption of a log-Hölder continuity for the variable exponent $p(x)$. Our analysis expand on the regularity theory for minimizers of a class of free-discontinuity problems in the nonstandard growth case. This may be seen as a follow-up of the paper Fusco, Mingione and Trombetti (2001), dealing with a constant exponent.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity theorem for almost-minimizers of the functional $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}=P-\gamma P_{\varepsilon}$, where $\gamma\in(0,1)$ and $P_{\varepsilon}$ is a nonlocal energy converging to the perimeter as $\varepsilon$ vanishes. Our theorem provides a criterion for $C^{1,\alpha}$-regularity at a point of the boundary which is uniform as the parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to $0$. Since the two terms in the energy are of the same order when $\varepsilon$ is small, we are considering here much stronger nonlocal interactions than those considered in most related works. As a consequence of our regularity result, we obtain that, for $\varepsilon$ small enough, volume-constrained minimizers of $\mathcal{F}_{\varepsilon,\gamma}$ are balls. For small $\varepsilon$, this minimization problem corresponds to the large mass regime for a Gamow-type problem where the nonlocal repulsive term is given by an integrable $G$ with sufficiently fast decay at infinity.

Abstract:We study weak solutions and minimizers $u$ of the non-autonomous problems $\operatorname{div} A(x, Du)=0$ and $\min_v \int_\Omega F(x,Dv)\,dx$ with quasi-isotropic $(p, q)$-growth. We consider the case that $u$ is bounded, Hölder continuous or lies in a Lebesgue space and establish a sharp connection between assumptions on $A$ or $F$ and the corresponding norm of $u$. We prove a Sobolev--Poincaré inequality, higher integrability and the Hölder continuity of $u$ and $Du$. Our proofs are optimized and streamlined versions of earlier research that can more readily be further extended to other settings. Connections between assumptions on $A$ or $F$ and assumptions on $u$ are known for the double phase energy $F(x, \xi)=|\xi|^p + a(x)|\xi|^q$. We obtain slightly better results even in this special case. Furthermore, we also cover perturbed variable exponent, Orlicz variable exponent, degenerate double phase, Orlicz double phase, triple phase, double variable exponent as well as variable exponent double phase energies and the results are new in most of these special cases.
