Abstract:It is often convenient to represent a process for randomly generating a graph as a graphon. (More precisely, these give \emph{vertex exchangeable} processes -- those processes in which each vertex is treated the same way.) Other structures can be treated by generalizations like hypergraphons, permutatons, and, for a very general class, theons. These representations are not unique: different representations can lead to the same probability distribution on graphs. This naturally leads to questions (going back at least to Hoover's proof of the Aldous--Hoover Theorem on the existence of such representations) that ask when quasirandomness properties on the distribution guarantee the existence of particularly simple representations. We extend the usual theon representation by adding an additional datum of a random permutation to each tuple, which we call a $\ast$-representation. We show that if a process satisfies the \emph{unique coupling} property UCouple[$\ell$], which says roughly that all $\ell$-tuples of vertices ``look the same'', then the process is $\ast$-$\ell$-independent: there is a $\ast$-representation that does not make use of any random information about $\ell$-tuples (including tuples of length $<\ell$). Simple examples show that the use of $\ast$-representations is necessary. This resolves a question of Coregliano and Razborov, since it easily follows that UCouple[l] implies Independence[\ell'] (the existence of an $\ell'$-independent ordinary representation) for $\ell'<\ell$.

Abstract:An alternating colouring function is defined on strings over the alphabet $\{0, 1\}$. It divides the strings in colourable and non-colourable ones. The points in the subshift of finite type defined by forbidding all non-colourable strings of a certain length alternate between states of one colour and states of the other colour. In other words, the points in the 2nd power shifts all have the same colour. The number $K_n$ of non-colourable strings of length $n \ge 2$ is shown to be $2 \cdot (J_{n-2} + 1)$ where $J$ is the sequence of Jacobsthal numbers. The number of sources and sinks in the de Bruijn graph of dimension $n \ge 3$ with non-colourable edges removed is shown each to be $K_n - 4$.

Abstract:A sequence of random variables is called exchangeable if its joint distribution is invariant under permutations. The original formulation of de Finetti's theorem says that any exchangeable sequence of $\{0,1\}$-valued random variables can be thought of as a mixture of independent and identically distributed sequences in a certain precise mathematical sense. Interpreting this statement from a convex analytic perspective, Hewitt and Savage obtained the same conclusion for more general state spaces under some topological conditions. The main contribution of this paper is in providing a new framework that explains the theorem purely as a consequence of the underlying distribution of the random variables, with no topological conditions (beyond Hausdorffness) on the state space being necessary if the distribution is Radon. We also show that it is consistent with the axioms of ZFC that de Finetti's theorem holds for all sequences of exchangeable random variables taking values in any complete metric space. The framework we use is based on nonstandard analysis. We have provided a self-contained introduction to nonstandard analysis as an appendix, thus rendering measure theoretic probability and point-set topology as the only prerequisites for this paper. Our introduction aims to develop some new ideologies that might be of interest to mathematicians, philosophers, and mathematics educators alike. Our technical tools come from nonstandard topological measure theory, in which a highlight is a new generalization of Prokhorov's theorem. Modulo such technical tools, our proof relies on properties of the empirical measures induced by hyperfinitely many identically distributed random variables -- a feature that allows us to establish de Finetti's theorem in the generality that we seek while still retaining the combinatorial intuition of proofs of simpler versions of de Finetti's theorem.

When invariance implies exchangeability (and applications to invariant Keisler measures)

Abstract:We study the problem of when, given a homogeneous structure $M$ and a space $S$ of expansions of $M$, every $\mathrm{Aut}(M)$-invariant probability measure on $S$ is exchangeable (i.e. $S_\infty$-invariant). We define a condition of $k$-overlap closedness on $M$ which implies exchangeability of random expansions by a class of structures whose finite substructures are all contained in a hereditary class with labelled growth-rate $O(e^{n^{k+\delta}})$ for all $\delta>0$. For example, the generic tetrahedron-free $3$-hypergraph is $2$-overlap closed and so all of its random expansions by graphs are exchangeable. Our more general results on $k$-overlap closedness for homogeneous structures imply the same for every finitely bounded homogeneous $3$-hypergraph with free amalgamation. Our results extend and recover both the work of Angel, Kechris and Lyons on invariant random orderings of homogeneous structures and some of the work of Crane and Towsner, and Ackerman on relatively exchangeable structures. We also study conditions under which there are non-exchangeable invariant random expansions looking at the universal homogeneous kay-graphs. In the second part of the paper we apply our results to study invariant Keisler measures in homogeneous structures. We prove that invariant Keisler measures can be viewed as a particular kind of invariant random expansion. Thus, we describe the spaces of invariant Keisler measures of various homogeneous structures, obtaining the first results of this kind since the work of Albert and Ensley. We also show there are $2^{\aleph_0}$ supersimple homogeneous ternary structures for which there are non-forking formulas which are universally measure zero.

Abstract:In this note we prove that a finite family { X 1 , ... , X d } \{X_1,\dots ,X_d\} of real r.v.'s that is exchangeable and such that ( X 1 , ... , X d ) (X_1,\dots ,X_d) is invariant with respect to a subgroup of S O ( d ) SO(d) acting irreducibly, is actually invariant with respect to the action of the full group S O ( d ) SO(d) . Three immediate consequences are deduced: a characterization of isotropic spherical random eigenfunctions whose Fourier coefficients are exchangeable, an extension of Bernstein's characterization of the Gaussian and a characterization of the Lebesgue measure on the sphere.

Abstract:A central limit theorem for arrays of symmetric row-wise exchangeable random variables is presented. The result is valid for finite and infinite extendable and non-extendable sequences. Unlike most reported versions of the central limit theorem valid only for partial sums of finite non-extendable sequences, ours applies to the entire sum and mimics the classical theorem in this sense.

Abstract:We establish a one-to-one correspondence between (i) exchangeable sequences of random variables whose finite-dimensional distributions are minimum (or maximum) infinitely divisible and (ii) non-negative, non-decreasing, infinitely divisible stochastic processes. The exponent measure of an exchangeable minimum infinitely divisible sequence is shown to be the sum of a very simple "drift measure" and a mixture of product probability measures, which uniquely corresponds to the Lévy measure of a non-negative and non-decreasing infinitely divisible process. The latter is shown to be supported on non-negative and non-decreasing functions. In probabilistic terms, the aforementioned infinitely divisible process is equal to the conditional cumulative hazard process associated with the exchangeable sequence of random variables with minimum (or maximum) infinitely divisible marginals. Our results provide an analytic umbrella which embeds the de Finetti subfamilies of many interesting classes of multivariate distributions, such as exogenous shock models, exponential and geometric laws with lack-of-memory property, min-stable multivariate exponential and extreme-value distributions, as well as reciprocal Archimedean copulas with completely monotone generator and Archimedean copulas with log-completely monotone generator.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:Abstract A natural generalization of interval exchange maps are linear involutions, first introduced by Danthony and Nogueira [Measured foliations on non-orientable surfaces. Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 26 (6) (1993), 645–664]. Recurrent train tracks with a single switch provide a subclass of linear involutions. We call such linear involutions non-classical interval exchanges. They are related to measured foliations on orientable flat surfaces. Non-classical interval exchanges can be studied as a dynamical system by considering Rauzy induction in this context. This gives a refinement process on the parameter space similar to Kerckhoff’s simplicial systems. We show that the refinement process gives an expansion that has a key dynamical property called uniform distortion . We use uniform distortion to prove normality of the expansion. Consequently, we prove an analog of Keane’s conjecture: almost every non-classical interval exchange is uniquely ergodic. Uniform distortion has been independently shown in [A. Avila and M. Resende. Connecting classical finite exchangeability to quantum theory

Abstract:Exchangeability is a fundamental concept in probability theory and statistics. It allows to model situations where the order of observations does not matter. The classical de Finetti's theorem provides a representation of infinitely exchangeable sequences of random variables as mixtures of independent and identically distributed variables. The quantum de Finetti theorem extends this result to symmetric quantum states on tensor product Hilbert spaces. However, both theorems do not hold for finitely exchangeable sequences. The aim of this work is to investigate two lesser-known representation theorems. Developed in classical probability theory, they extend de Finetti's theorem to finitely exchangeable sequences by using quasi-probabilities and quasi-expectations. With the aid of these theorems, we illustrate how a de Finetti-like representation theorem for finitely exchangeable sequences requires a mathematical representation which is formally equivalent to quantum theory (with boson-symmetric density matrices).

Abstract:De Finetti's theorem, also called the de Finetti-Hewitt-Savage theorem, is a foundational result in probability and statistics. Roughly, it says that an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables can always be written as a mixture of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) sequences of random variables. In this paper, we consider a weighted generalization of exchangeability that allows for weight functions to modify the individual distributions of the random variables along the sequence, provided that -- modulo these weight functions -- there is still some common exchangeable base measure. We study conditions under which a de Finetti-type representation exists for weighted exchangeable sequences, as a mixture of distributions which satisfy a weighted form of the i.i.d. property. Our approach establishes a nested family of conditions that lead to weighted extensions of other well-known related results as well, in particular, extensions of the zero-one law and the law of large numbers.

Abstract:We define a new class of ternary sequences that are 2-balanced. These sequences are obtained by colouring of Sturmian sequences. We show that the class contains sequences of any given letter frequencies. We provide an upper bound on factor and abelian complexity of these sequences. Using the interpretation by rectangle exchange transformation, we prove that for almost all triples of letter frequencies, the upper bound on factor and abelian complexity is reached. The bound on factor complexity is given using a number-theoretical function which we compute explicitly for a class of parameters.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Diaconis and Freedman (Ann. Probab. 1980) characterising the extreme points of the set of partially-exchangeable processes on a countable set. More concretely, we prove that the partially exchangeable sigma-algebra of any transient partially exchangeable process $X=(X_i)_{i\geq 0}$ (and hence any transient Markov chain) coincides up to null sets with the sigma-algebra generated by the initial state $X_0$ and the transition counts $( \#\{i\geq 0: X_i=x, X_{i+1}=y\} : x,y\in S)$. Our proof is based on an analysis of Gibbs measures for Eulerian paths on rooted digraphs, relying in particular on the connection to uniform spanning trees and Wilson's algorithm via the de Bruijn--Ehrenfest--Smith--Tutte (BEST) bijection, and yields an explicit method to sample from the conditional distribution of a transient Markov chain given its transition counts.

Abstract:We prove that proper coloring distinguishes between block factors and finitely dependent stationary processes. A stochastic process is finitely dependent if variables at sufficiently well-separated locations are independent; it is a block factor if it can be expressed as an equivariant finite-range function of independent variables. The problem of finding non-block-factor finitely dependent processes dates back to 1965. The first published example appeared in 1993, and we provide arguably the first natural examples. Schramm proved in 2008 that no stationary 1-dependent 3-coloring of the integers exists, and asked whether a $k$ -dependent $q$ -coloring exists for any $k$ and $q$ . We give a complete answer by constructing a 1-dependent 4-coloring and a 2-dependent 3-coloring. Our construction is canonical and natural, yet very different from all previous schemes. In its pure form it yields precisely the two finitely dependent colorings mentioned above, and no others. The processes provide unexpected connections between extremal cases of the Lovász local lemma and descent and peak sets of random permutations. Neither coloring can be expressed as a block factor, nor as a function of a finite-state Markov chain; indeed, no stationary finitely dependent coloring can be so expressed. We deduce extensions involving $d$ dimensions and shifts of finite type; in fact, any nondegenerate shift of finite type also distinguishes between block factors and finitely dependent processes.
