Abstract:The asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the quantum differential equation of a Fano manifold F defines a characteristic class A_F of F, called the principal asymptotic class. Gamma conjecture of Vasily Golyshev and the present authors claims that the principal asymptotic class A_F equals the Gamma class G_F associated to Euler's $\Gamma$-function. We illustrate in the case of toric varieties, toric complete intersections and Grassmannians how this conjecture follows from mirror symmetry. We also prove that Gamma conjecture is compatible with taking hyperplane sections, and give a heuristic argument how the mirror oscillatory integral and the Gamma class for the projective space arise from the polynomial loop space.

On the exponential algebraic geometry

Abstract:The set of roots of any finite system of exponential sums in the space $\mathbb{C}^n$ is called an exponential variety. We define the intersection index of varieties of complementary dimensions, and the ring of classes of numerical equivalence of exponential varieties with operations "addition-union" and "multiplication-intersection". This ring is analogous to the ring of conditions of the torus $(\mathbb{C}\setminus 0)^n$ and is called the ring of conditions of $\mathbb{C}^n$. We provide its description in terms of convex geometry. Namely we associate an exponential variety with an element of a certain ring generated by convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We call this element the Newtonization of the exponential variety. For example, the Newtonization of an exponential hypersurface is its Newton polyhedron. The Newtonization map defines an isomorphism of the ring of conditions to the ring generated by convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{C}^n$. It follows, in particular, that the intersection index of $n$ exponential hypersurfaces is equal to the mixed pseudo-volume of their Newton polyhedra.

Abstract:We find an explicit formula for the gamma vector in terms of the input polynomial in a way that extends it to arbitrary polynomials. More specifically, we find explicit linear combination in terms of coefficients of the input polynomial (using Catalan numbers and binomial coefficients) and an expression involving the derivative of the input polynomial. In the case where the input is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial complex, this gives an interpretation of the gamma vector as a measure of differences in local and global contributions. We also apply them to connect signs/inequalities of (shifts of) the gamma vector to upper/lower bound conditions on coefficients of the input polynomial. Finally, we make use of the shape of the sums used to make these estimates and connections with intersection numbers to relate these properties of the gamma vector to algebraic structures.

Non-Archimedean Green's functions and Zariski decompositions

Abstract:We study the non-Archimedean Monge-Ampère equation on a smooth projective variety over a discretely or trivially valued field. First, we give an example of a Green's function, associated to a divisorial valuation, which is not Q-PL (i.e. not a model function in the discretely valued case). Second, we produce an example of a function whose Monge-Ampère measure is a finite atomic measure supported in a dual complex, but which is not invariant under the retraction associated to any snc model. This answers a question by Burgos Gil et al in the negative. Our examples are based on geometric constructions by Cutkosky and Lesieutre, and arise via base change from Green's functions over a trivially valued field; this theory allows us to efficiently encode the Zariski decomposition of a pseudoeffective numerical class.

Abstract:A classical result about unit equations says that if Γ 1 and Γ 2 are finitely generated subgroups of ${\mathbb C}^\times$ , then the equation x + y = 1 has only finitely many solutions with x ∈ Γ 1 and y ∈ Γ 2 . We study a non-commutative analogue of the result, where $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2$ are finitely generated subsemigroups of the multiplicative group of a quaternion algebra. We prove an analogous conclusion when both semigroups are generated by algebraic quaternions with norms greater than 1 and one of the semigroups is commutative. As an application in dynamics, we prove that if f and g are endomorphisms of a curve C of genus 1 over an algebraically closed field k, and deg( f), deg(g)≥ 2, then f and g have a common iterate if and only if some forward orbit of f on C(k) has infinite intersection with an orbit of g.

Abstract:We introduce a gamma function $\Ga(x,z)$ in two complex variables which extends the classical gamma function $\Ga(z)$ in the sense that $\lim_{x\to 1}\Ga(x,z)=\Ga(z)$. We will show that many properties which $\Ga(z)$ enjoys extend in a natural way to the function $\Ga(x,z)$. Among other things we shall provide functional equations, a multiplication formula, and analogues of the Stirling formula with asymptotic estimates as consequences.

The Generalized Torelli Problem through the geometry of the Gauss map

Abstract:Given a non-hyperelliptic curve $C\in\mathscr{M}_g$ and $2\leq n\leq g-2$, we prove that the generic fiber of the Gauss map on $W_n$ has one element and we characterize its multiple locus. Assuming that $C$ doesn't have a $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k+1}^{k+1}$, for $1\leq k\leq n-1\leq g-3$, we solve the problem of reconstructing each $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$ and the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism, through information encoded in the Gauss map. For this purpose we introduce the notion of $\left(n+k\right)$-intersection loci and we study their dimensions. In the hyperelliptic case we prove that the image of the Gauss map is a union of sets whose closures are birational to their complete $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$, for each $1\leq k\leq n\leq g-1$, and that these also contain a copy of the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism. From the case $k=n$ we deduce that the closure of the image of the Gauss map is birational to $\mathbb{P}^n$.

An asymptotic analysis of spherically symmetric perfect fluid self-similar solutions

Abstract:The asymptotic properties of self-similar spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions with equation of state p=alpha mu (-1<alpha<1) are described. We prove that for large and small values of the similarity variable, z=r/t, all such solutions must have an asymptotic power-law form. Some of them are associated with an exact power-law solution, in which case they are asymptotically Friedmann or asymptotically Kantowski-Sachs for 1>alpha >-1 or asymptotically static for 1>alpha >0. Others are associated with an approximate power-law solution, in which case they are asymptotically quasi-static for 1>alpha >0 or asymptotically Minkowski for 1>alpha >1/5. We also show that there are solutions whose asymptotic behaviour is associated with finite values of z and which depend upon powers of ln z. These correspond either to a second family of asymptotically Minkowski solutions for 1>alpha>1/5 or to solutions that are asymptotically Kasner for 1>alpha>-1/3. There are some other asymptotic power-law solutions associated with negative alpha, but the physical significance of these is unclear. The asymptotic form of the solutions is given in all cases, together with the number of associated parameters.

Abstract:We investigate Gamma conjecture I and its underlying Conjecture $\mathcal{O}$ for the $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles $X_n=\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(\mathcal{O}\oplus\mathcal{O}(n))$ with $n\ge 3$. We show that Conjecture $\mathcal{O}$ does not hold if $n$ is odd, and that Gamma conjecture I does not hold if $n$ is even. Led by this example, we propose modifications for Gamma conjecture I, discuss Gamma conjecture I over the Kahler moduli space, and identify the corresponding principal asymptotic class.

Abstract:We show that for any polynomial $F(X,Y_0,Y_1,Y_2) \in \mathbb{C}[X, Y_0, Y_1, Y_2]$, the equation $F(z,j(z),j'(z),j''(z))=0$ has a Zariski dense set of solutions in the hypersurface $F(X,Y_0,Y_1,Y_2)=0$, unless $F$ is in $\mathbb{C}[X]$ or it is divisible by $Y_0$, $Y_0-1728$, or $Y_1$. Our methods establish criteria for finding solutions to more general equations involving periodic functions. Furthermore, they produce a qualitative description of the distribution of these solutions.

Abstract:We prove a general independent equidistribution result for Gauss sums associated to $n$ monomials in $r$ variable multiplicative characters over a finite field, which generalizes several previous equidistribution results for Gauss and Jacobi sums. As an application, we show that any relation satisfied by these Gauss sums must be a combination of the conjugation relation $G(\chi)G(\overline\chi)=\pm q$, Galois conjugation invariance and the Hasse-Davenport product formula.

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

Abstract:This paper verifies $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem for twisted gamma factors of irreducible cuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$, for $n\leq 5,$ and of irreducible generic representations, for $n<\frac{q-1}{2\sqrt{q}}+1$ in the appendix by Zhiwei Yun, where $p$ is a prime and q is a power of $p$. The counterpart of $n\times 1$ converse theorem for level zero cuspidal representations also follows the established relation between gamma factors of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathcal F})$ and that of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_q)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ denotes a $p$-adic field whose residue field is isomorphic to ${\mathbb F}_q.$ For $n=6,$ examples failed $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem over finite fields are provided and the authors propose a set of primitive representations, for which $n\times 1$ gamma factors should be able to detect a unique element in it. For $m, n\in {\mathbb N},$ in the spirit of Langlands functorial lifting, we formulate a conjecture to relate $n\times m$ gamma factors of finite fields with Gauss sums over extended fields.
Equivariant K-homology and K-theory for some discrete planar affine groups

Abstract:We consider the semi-direct products $G=\mathbb Z^2\rtimes GL_2(\mathbb Z), \mathbb Z^2\rtimes SL_2(\mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z^2\rtimes\Gamma(2)$ (where $\Gamma(2)$ is the congruence subgroup of level 2). For each of them, we compute both sides of the Baum-Connes conjecture, namely the equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying space $\underline{E}G$ for proper actions on the left-hand side, and the analytical K-theory of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra on the right-hand side. The computation of the LHS is made possible by the existence of a 3-dimensional model for $\underline{E}G$, which allows to replace equivariant K-homology by Bredon homology. We pay due attention to the presence of torsion in $G$, leading to an extensive study of the wallpaper groups associated with finite subgroups. For the second and third groups, the computations in $K_0$ provide explicit generators that are matched by the Baum-Connes assembly map.
