Abstract:We have proven the existence of new higher-genus maxfaces with Enneper end. These maxfaces are not the companions of any existing minimal surfaces, and furthermore, the singularity set is located away from the ends. The nature of the singularities is systematically investigated.

Abstract:The node-opening technique, originally designed for constructing minimal surfaces, is adapted to construct a rich variety of new maxfaces of high genus that are embedded outside a compact set and have arbitrarily many catenoid or planar ends, thus removing the scarcity of examples of maxfaces. The surfaces look like spacelike planes connected by small necks. Among the examples are maxfaces of the Costa--Hoffman--Meeks type. Although very fruitful, the main challenge of this paper is not the construction itself, but the analysis of the positions and natures of singularities on these maxfaces. More specifically, we conclude that the singular set form curves around the waists of the necks. In generic and some symmetric cases, all but finitely many singularities are cuspidal edges, and the non-cuspidal singularities are swallowtails evenly distributed along the singular curves.

Abstract:In his lecture notes on mean curvature flow, Ilmanen conjectured the existence of noncompact self-shrinkers with arbitrary genus. Here, we employ min-max techniques to give a rigorous existence proof for these surfaces. Conjecturally, the self-shrinkers that we obtain have precisely one (asymptotically conical) end. We confirm this for large genus via a precise analysis of the limiting object of sequences of such self-shrinkers for which the genus tends to infinity. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for a further family of noncompact self-shrinkers with odd genus and two asymptotically conical ends.

Abstract:We construct families of embedded, singly periodic minimal surfaces of any genus $g$ in the quotient with any even number $2n>2$ of almost parallel Scherk ends. A surface in such a family looks like $n$ parallel planes connected by $n-1+g$ small catenoid necks. In the limit, the family converges to an $n$-sheeted vertical plane with $n-1+g$ singular points termed nodes in the quotient. For the nodes to open up into catenoid necks, their locations must satisfy a set of balance equations whose solutions are given by the roots of Stieltjes polynomials.

Abstract:Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $\Sigma$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $\Sigma$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $\Sigma$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $\Sigma$, there exists a decreasing function $p_\Sigma:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_\Sigma(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_\Sigma(g)$.

Area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets: prevalence, moduli space, and refinements on strata

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of our work on a conjecture of Almgren on area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets. First, we prove that area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets are prevalent on the homology level on general manifolds. They exist even in metrics arbitrarily close to the flat metric on a torus. Second, we partially determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents near the ones with fractal singular set that we constructed in this and previous work. Around strata of codimension at least three, the fractal self-intersections deform into transverse immersions under generic perturbations of metric. The result is sharp and we construct concrete examples to show that our fractal singularities do not necessarily completely dissolve under generic perturbations. Finally, we improve our previous results to give examples with different strata limiting to each other and refine the first stratum to fractal subsets of finite combinatorial graphs.

Abstract:End sum is a natural operation for combining two noncompact manifolds and has been used to construct various manifolds with interesting properties. The uniqueness of end sum has been well-studied in dimensions three and higher. We study end sum -- and the more general notion of adding a 1-handle at infinity -- for surfaces and prove uniqueness results. The result of adding a 1-handle at infinity to distinct ends of a surface with compact boundary is uniquely determined by the chosen ends and the orientability of the 1-handle. As a corollary, the end sum of two surfaces with compact boundary is uniquely determined by the chosen ends. Unlike uniqueness results in higher dimensions, which rely on isotopy uniqueness of rays, our results rely fundamentally on a classification of noncompact surfaces.

Abstract:We prove that infinite regular and chiral maps take place on surfaces with at most one end. Moreover, we prove that an infinite regular or chiral map on an orientable surface with genus can only be realized on the Loch Ness monster, that is, the topological surface of infinite genus with one end.

Abstract:Costa first constructed a family of complete minimal surfaces which have genus 1 and 4 planar ends by use of Weierstrass-℘ functions. They are Willmore tori of Willmore energy 16 π . In this paper, the authors consider the geometry of conjugate surfaces of these surfaces. It turns out that these conjugate surfaces are doubly periodic minimal surfaces with flat ends in R 3 . Moreover, the authors can also perform a Lorentzian deformation on these Costa's minimal tori, which produce a family of complete space-like stationary surfaces (i.e., of zero mean curvature) with genus 1 and 4 planar ends in 4-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space R 1 4 .

Abstract:A germ of normal complex analytical surface is called a Hirzebruch-Jung singularity if it is analytically isomorphic to the germ at the 0-dimensional orbit of an affine toric surface. Two such germs are known to be isomorphic if and only if the toric surfaces corresponding to them are equivariantly isomorphic. We extend this result to higher-dimensional Hirzebruch-Jung singularities, which we define to be the germs analytically isomorphic to the germ at the 0-dimensional orbit of an affine toric variety determined by a lattice and a simplicial cone of maximal dimension. We deduce a normalization algorithm for quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga-Knieper-War Theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that on a special type of minimal ruled surface, which is an example of a `pseudo-Hirzebruch surface', every Kähler class admits a certain kind of `higher extremal Kähler metric', which is a Kähler metric whose corresponding top Chern form and volume form satisfy a nice equation motivated by analogy with the equation characterizing an extremal Kähler metric. From an already proven result, it will follow that this specific higher extremal Kähler metric cannot be a `higher constant scalar curvature Kähler (hcscK) metric', which is defined, again by analogy with the definition of a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric, to be a Kähler metric whose top Chern form is harmonic. By doing a certain set of computations involving the top Bando-Futaki invariant we will conclude that hcscK metrics do not exist in any Kähler class on this surface.

Abstract:In this paper we study pluricanonical maps of minimal projective 3-folds of general type with geometric genus 1, 2 and 3. We go in the direction pioneered by Enriques and Bombieri, and other authors, pinning down, for low projective genus, a finite list of exceptions to the birationality of some pluricanonical map. In particular, apart from a finite list of weighted baskets, we prove the birationality of φ_16, φ_6 and φ_5 respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate singularities on fibrations and related topics. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov and McKernan on singularities on Fano type fibrations and a conjecture of the author on singularities on log Calabi-Yau fibrations. From these we derive a variant of a conjecture of McKernan and Prokhorov on rationally connected varieties with nef anti-canonical divisor. We discuss other applications including existence of bounded klt complements and gonality of fibres of del Pezzo fibrations. We prove a general result on controlling multiplicities of fibres of certain fibrations (not necessarily of Fano type) which is the key ingredient of the proofs of the above results.
