Abstract:We discuss an unfortunate mistake, for a Dirac free particle, in the last Fermi lecture notes on quantum mechanics, in a course given at the University of Chicago in winter and spring of 1954. As is demonstrated, the correct result can be obtained by a simple matrix multiplication.

Abstract:We discuss the solution proposed by Fermi to the so called "4/3 problem" in the classical theory of the electron, a problem which puzzled the physics community for many decades before and after his contribution. Unfortunately his early resolution of the problem in 1922–1923 published in three versions in Italian and German journals (after three preliminary articles on the topic) went largely unnoticed. Even more recent texts devoted to classical electron theory still do not present his argument or acknowledge the actual content of those articles. The calculations initiated by Fermi at the time are completed here by formulating and discussing the conservation of the total 4-momentum of the accelerated electron as seen from the instantaneous rest frame in which it is momentarily at rest.

Werner Heisenberg called this coincidence a `miracle' but Erwin Schroedinger described it as a fortuitous computational accident.

Abstract:Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is considered the most accurate theory in the history of science. However, this precision is based on a single experimental value: the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron (g-factor). An examination of the history of QED reveals that this value was obtained in a very suspicious way. These suspicions include the case of Karplus & Kroll, who admitted to having lied in their presentation of the most relevant calculation in the history of QED. As we will demonstrate in this paper, the Karplus & Kroll affair was not an isolated case, but one in a long series of errors, suspicious coincidences, mathematical inconsistencies and renormalized infinities swept under the rug.

Abstract:These lecture notes survey some joint work with Samson Abramsky as it was presented by me at several conferences in the summer of 2005. It concerns `doing quantum mechanics using only pictures of lines, squares, triangles and diamonds'. This picture calculus can be seen as a very substantial extension of Dirac's notation, and has a purely algebraic counterpart in terms of so-called Strongly Compact Closed Categories (introduced by Abramsky and I in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/0402130" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0402130">quant-ph/0402130</a> and [4]) which subsumes my Logic of Entanglement <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/0402014" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0402014">quant-ph/0402014</a>. Drude's lesser known error of a factor of two and Lorentz's correction

Abstract:As is well known, Paul Drude put forward the very first quantitative theory of electrical conduction in metals in 1900. He could successfully account for the Wiedemann-Franz law which states that the ratio of thermal to electrical conductivity divided by temperature is a constant called the Lorenz number. As it turns out, in Drude's derivation, there is a lucky cancellation of two errors. Drude's under-estimate (by an order of 100) of the value of square of the average electron velocity compensated his over-estimate of the electronic heat capacity (by the same order of 100). This compensation or cancellation of two errors lead to a value of the Lorenz number very close to its experimental value. This is well known. There is another error of a factor of two which Drude made when he calculated two different relaxation times for heat conductivity and electrical conductivity. In this article we highlight how and why this error occurred in Drude's derivation and how it was removed 5 years later (that is in 1905) by Hendrik Lorentz when he used the Boltzmann equation and a single relaxation time. This article is of pedagogical value and may be useful to undergraduate/graduate students learning solid state physics.

Abstract:In this work we revisit the famous Fermi two-atom problem, which concerns how relativistic causality impacts atomic transition probabilities, using the tools from relativistic quantum information and algebraic quantum field theory. The problem has sparked different analyses from many directions and angles since the proposed solution by Buchholz and Yngvason [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 , 613 (1994)]. Some of these analyses employ various approximations, heuristics, and perturbative methods, which tends to render some of the otherwise useful insights somewhat obscured. It is also noted that they are all studied in flat spacetime. We show that current tools in relativistic quantum information, combined with an algebraic approach to quantum field theory, are now powerful enough to provide fuller and cleaner analysis of the Fermi two-atom problem for arbitrary curved spacetimes in a completely nonperturbative manner. Our result gives the original solution of Buchholz and Yngvason a very operational reinterpretation in terms of qubits interacting with a quantum field and allows for various natural generalizations and inclusion of detector-based local measurement for the quantum field [ Phys. On Hamiltonian formulations of the Dirac system

Abstract:We extend a previously successful discussion of the constrained Schrödinger system through the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm to the case of the Dirac field. In order to follow the analogy, first we discuss the classical Dirac field as a spinorial variable, by introducing properly defined momenta and a suitably modified, factor ordered Poisson bracket. According to the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm two second class Hamiltonian constraints emerge, leading to a factor ordered Dirac bracket on the full phase space. This becomes the Poisson bracket on the reduced phase space in the canonical chart adapted to the shell. The Dirac equation is recovered both as consistency condition on the full phase space and as canonical equation on the reduced phase space. Alternatively, considering the Dirac field as odd Grassmann variable, we present the details of the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm (with either left and righ derivatives acting on Grassmann valued superfunctions and involving a different type of generalized Poisson and Dirac brackets). We propose a recipe for the canonical second quantization of all three versions of the generalized Dirac brackets, yielding the correct fundamental anticommutator.

On a paradox in quantum mechanics and its resolution

Abstract:Consider a free Schrödinger particle inside an interval with walls characterized by the Dirichlet boundary condition. Choose a parabola as the normalized state of the particle that satisfies this boundary condition. To calculate the variance of the Hamiltonian in that state, one needs to calculate the mean value of the Hamiltonian and that of its square. If one uses the standard formula to calculate these mean values, one obtains both results without difficulty, but the variance unexpectedly takes an imaginary value. If one uses the same expression to calculate these mean values but first writes the Hamiltonian and its square in terms of their respective eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, one obtains the same result as above for the mean value of the Hamiltonian but a different value for its square (in fact, it is not zero); hence, the variance takes an acceptable value. From whence do these contradictory results arise? The latter paradox has been presented in the literature as an example of a problem that can only be properly solved by making use of certain fundamental concepts within the general theory of linear operators in Hilbert spaces. Here, we carefully review those concepts and apply them in a detailed way to resolve the paradox. Our results are formulated within the natural framework of wave mechanics, and to avoid inconveniences that the use of Dirac's symbolic formalism could bring, we avoid the use of that formalism throughout the article. In addition, we obtain a resolution of the paradox in an entirely formal way without addressing the restrictions imposed by the domains of the operators involved. We think that the content of this paper will be useful to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to their instructors.

Abstract:We correct a mistake in the analytical expression for the energy density given in Phys. Rev. C76, 021902 (2007) [arXiv:0704.3625 [hep-ph]]. The expression should be multiplied by 16. One question then arises; how could it be possible to explain this difference between the analytical and numerical results in the same model if both are correct? We find a subtle problem in the treatment of the randomness of the color source along the longitudinal direction and the treatment of the longitudinal extent of the color source.
A quantum treatment of the Stern-Gerlach experiment

Abstract:Most textbooks introduce the concept of spin by presenting the Stern-Gerlach experiment with the aid of Newtonian atomic trajectories. However, to understand how both spatial and spin degrees of freedom evolve over time and how the latter influence experimental outcomes, it is essential to employ a quantum approach. In this paper, we offer two simple methods, the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula and the direct integration of the Schrödinger equation in an interaction picture, to determine the corresponding evolution operator. We not only provide an interpretation of the individual terms within this operator but also establish connections with semiclassical calculations, when feasible. Moreover, we compute the wave function and touch upon the concept of position-spin entanglement to illustrate how a full quantum description of the Stern-Gerlach experiment can open doors to topics like quantum measurement and nonlocality.

Abstract:From the very beginning of his development, Einstein was very critical of the main results of quantum mechanics. That is why in 1925, when the main papers on matrix mechanics were published, he wrote to his friend Besso [1] as follows: "The most interesting theoretical achievement of recent times is the Heisenberg-Born-Jordan theory of quantum states. A real witchcraft calculus in which infinite determinants (matrices) appear instead of Cartesian coordinates. It is highly witty and, due to its complexity, is insured against proving erroneous." In this connection I wish to say the following. A lot of time has passed since this thought was made. Therefore it makes sense to try to prove that the results of matrix mechanics actually contain defects. In the paper an attempt is made to prove that it is really so.

Abstract:Dirac's leaping insight that the normalized anti-commutator of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices must equal the timespace signature {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} was decisive for the success of his equation. The {\gamma}^{\mu}-s are the same in all Lorentz frames and "describe some new degrees of freedom, belonging to some internal motion in the electron". Therefore, the imposed link to {\eta}^{\mu}{\nu} constitutes a separate postulate of Dirac's theory. I derive a manifestly covariant first order equation from the direct quantization of the classical 4-momentum vector using the formalism of Geometric Algebra. All properties of the Dirac electron & positron follow from the equation - preconceived 'internal degrees of freedom', ad hoc imposed signature and matrices unneeded. In the novel scheme, the Dirac operator is frame-free and manifestly Lorentz invariant. Relative to a Lorentz frame, the classical spacetime frame vectors e^{\mu} appear instead of the {\gamma}^{\mu} matrices. Axial frame vectors (without cross product) of the 3D orientation space defining spin and rotations appear instead of the Pauli matrices; polar frame vectors of the 3D position space naturally define boosts, etc. Not the least, the formalism shows a significantly higher computational efficiency compared to matrices.

Abstract:Linac-ring analogues of the LHC and VLHC based standard type ep collider proposals are discussed. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities can be obtained with TESLA-like linacs, whereas essential modifications are required for CLIC technology. The physics search potential of proposed ep colliders is demonstrated using pair production of heavy quarks as an example.

Abstract:Taking into account the importance of the unified theory of quantum mechanics and gravity, and the existence of a minimal length of the order of the Planck scale, we consider a modified Schrödinger equation resulting from a generalized uncertainty principle, which finds applications from the realm of quantum information to large-scale physics, with a quantum mechanically corrected gravitational interaction proposed very recently. As the resulting equation cannot be solved by common exact approaches, we propose a Bethe ansatz approach, which will be applied and whose results we will discuss, commenting on the analogy of the present study with some other interesting physical problems.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics was developed rapidly and abruptly. The former circumstance inevitably led to errors in the theory, while the latter forced researchers to advance without paying attention to the results obtained earlier. These two circumstances resulted in a number of errors. In particular, the probability of finding a 1 s electron in the nucleus of the hydrogen atom differs from zero. However, annihilation never occurs. Consequently, the quantum-mechanical calculation of the spatial probability distribution is incorrect. The presented list of errors in quantum mechanics is not exhaustive. There are many other errors mentioned or not mentioned in the literature.
