Abstract:For a prime $p>3$ and $a\in \Bbb Z$ with $p\nmid a$ let $V_p(x^2+\frac ax)$ be the residue-counts of $x^2+\frac ax$ modulo $p$ as $x$ runs over $1,2,\ldots,p-1$. In this paper, we obtain an explicit formula for $V_p(x^2+\frac ax)$, which is concerned with cubic residues and binary quadratic forms.

Abstract:In this paper we study some products related to quadratic residues and quartic residues modulo primes. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $A$ be any integer. We mainly determine completely the product $$f_p(A):=\prod_{1\le i,j\le(p-1)/2\atop p\nmid i^2-Aij-j^2}(i^2-Aij-j^2)$$ modulo $p$; for example, if $p\equiv1\pmod4$ then $$f_p(A)\equiv\begin{cases}-(A^2+4)^{(p-1)/4}\pmod p&\text{if}\ (\frac{A^2+4}p)=1, \\(-A^2-4)^{(p-1)/4}\pmod p&\text{if}\ (\frac{A^2+4}p)=-1,\end{cases}$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also determine $$\prod^{(p-1)/2}_{i,j=1\atop p\nmid 2i^2+5ij+2j^2}\left(2i^2+5ij+2j^2\right) \ \text{and}\ \prod^{(p-1)/2}_{i,j=1\atop p\nmid 2i^2-5ij+2j^2}\left(2i^2-5ij+2j^2\right)$$ modulo $p$.

Abstract:For any prime $p>3$ and rational $p$-integers $b,c$ with $c(b^3-27c)\not\equiv 0\pmod p$ let $V_p(x^2+bx+\frac cx)$ be the residue-counts of $x^2+bx+\frac cx$ modulo $p$ as $x$ runs over $1,2,\ldots,p-1$. In this paper, we reveal the connection between $V_p(x^2+bx+\frac cx)$ and the number of points on certain elliptic curve over the field $\Bbb F_p$.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ be the Legendre symbol. Let $b\in\mathbb Z$ and $\varepsilon\in\{\pm 1\}$. We mainly prove that $$\left|\left\{N_p(a,b):\ 1\{ax^2+b\}_p$, and $\{m\}_p$ with $m\in\mathbb{Z}$ is the least nonnegative residue of $m$ modulo $p$.

Abstract:We confirm several conjectures of Sun involving quadratic residues modulo odd primes. For any prime p equivalent to 1 (mod 4) and integer a not equivalent to 0 (mod p), we prove that (-1)(vertical bar 1 <= k {ak(2)}(p)}vertical bar +vertical bar{(j, k) : 1 <= j < k <= p - 1/2 & {ak(2) - aj(2)}(p) > p/2}vertical bar equivalent to vertical bar{1 <= k < p/4 : (k/p) - (a/p)}vertical bar (mod 2), where (a/p) is the Legendre symbol, epsilon(p) and h(p) are the fundamental unit and the class number of the real quadratic field Q(root p) respectively, and {x}(p) is the least nonnegative residue of an integer x modulo p. Also, for any prime p equivalent to 3 (mod 4) and delta = 1, 2, we determine (-1)(vertical bar{(j, k): 1 <= j(delta T-k}(p)}vertical bar, where T-m denotes the triangular number m(m + 1)/2.

Abstract:We compute the density of primes represented by a special quadratic form in a fixed square residue class. Using this result and a new method introduced by Thaine we prove the fact that for a prime p > 3 congruent to 3 modulo 4, the component e ( p +1)/2 of the p -Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of ℚ( ζ p ) is trivial.

Abstract:In this paper we evaluate several determinants involving quadratic residues modulo primes. For example, for any prime $p>3$ with $p\equiv3\pmod4$ and $a,b\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid ab$, we prove that $$\det\left[ 1+\tan\pi\frac{aj^2+bk^2}p \right]_{1\le j,k \le \frac{p-1}2} = \begin{cases}-2^{(p-1)/2}p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=1, \\p^{(p-3)/4}&\text{if}\ (\frac{ab}p)=-1, \end{cases}$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also pose some conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Nagell proved that for each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$, $p > 7$, there is a prime $q<2p^{1/2}$ that is a cubic residue modulo $p$. Here we show that for each fixed $\epsilon > 0$, and each prime $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ with $p > p_0(\epsilon)$, the number of prime cubic residues $q < p^{1/2+\epsilon}$ exceeds $p^{\epsilon/30}$. Our argument, like Nagell's, is rooted in the law of cubic reciprocity; somewhat surprisingly, character sum estimates play no role. We use the same method to establish related results about prime quadratic and biquadratic residues. For example, for all large primes $p$, there are more than $p^{1/9}$ prime quadratic residues $q<p$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $a$ be an integer not divisible by $p$. When $m$ is a positive integer with $p\equiv1\pmod{2m}$ and $2$ is an $m$th power residue modulo $p$, we determine the value of the product $\prod_{k\in R_m(p)}\tan\pi\frac{ak}p$, where $$R_m(p)=\{0<k<p:\ k\in\mathbb Z\ \text{is an}\ m\text{th power reside modulo}\ p\}.$$ In particular, if $p=x^2+64y^2$ with $x,y\in\mathbb Z$, then $$\prod_{k\in R_4(p)}\left(1+\tan\pi\frac {ak}p\right)=(-1)^{y}(-2)^{(p-1)/8}.$$

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper we investigate quadratic residues modulo p and related permutations, congruences and identities. If a1<…<a(p−1)/2 are all the quadratic residues modulo p among 1,…,p−1, then the list {12}p,…,{((p−1)/2)2}p (with {k}p the least nonnegative residue of k modulo p) is a permutation of a1,…,a(p−1)/2, and we show that the sign of this permutation is 1 or (−1)(h(−p)+1)/2 according as p≡3(mod8) or p≡7(mod8), where h(−p) is the class number of the imaginary quadratic field Q(−p). To achieve this, we evaluate the product ∏1⩽j<k⩽(p−1)/2(cot⁡πj2/p−cot⁡πk2/p) via Dirichlet's class number formula and Galois theory. We also obtain some new congruences and identities in product forms; for example, we determine the exact value of∏1⩽j<k⩽p−1cos⁡πaj2+bjk+ck2p for any a,b,c∈Z with ac(a+b+c)≢0(modp).

Abstract:We prove an asymptotic formula for primes of the shape $f(a,b^2)$ with $a,b$ integers and of the shape $f(a,p^2)$ with $p$ prime. Here $f$ is a binary quadratic form with integer coefficients, irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$ and has no local obstructions. This refines the seminal work of Friedlander and Iwaniec on primes of the form $x^2 + y^4$ and Heath-Brown and Li on primes of the form $a^2 + p^4$, as well as earlier work of the author with Lam and Schindler on primes of the form $f(a,p)$ with $f$ a positive definite form.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $d\in\mathbb Z$ with $p\nmid d$. For the determinants $$S_m(d,p)=\det\left[(i^2+dj^2)^{m}\right]_{1\leqslant i,j \leqslant (p-1)/2}\ \ \left(\frac{p-1}2\leqslant m\leqslant p-1\right),$$ Sun recently determined $S_m(d,p)$ modulo $p$ when $m\in\{p-2,p-3\}$ and $(\frac {-d}p)=-1$. In this paper, we obtain $S_{p-2}(d,p)$ modulo $p$ in the remaining case $(\frac{-d}p)=1$, and determine the Legendre symbols $(\frac{S_{p-3}\,(d,p)}p)$ and $(\frac{S_{p-4}\,(d,p)}p)$ in some special cases.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a large odd prime, let $x=(\log p)^{1+\varepsilon}$ and let $q\ll\log\log p$ be an integer, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small number. This note proves the existence of small prime quadratic residues and prime quadratic nonresidues in the arithmetic progression $a+qm\ll x$, with relatively prime $1\leq a<q$, unconditionally. The same results are generalized to small prime $k$th power residues and nonresidues, where $k\mid p-1$ and $k\ll\log\log p$.

Abstract:In this article, we present streamlined proofs of results of Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla concerning the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ for primes $p\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$ while providing a generalization of their conjecture. Using our generalization, we relate Fermat quotients of quadratic non-residues $\bmod{p}$ to sums of harmonic numbers.

A conjecture of S\'ark\"ozy on quadratic residues, II

Abstract: Denote by $\mathcal{R}_p$ the set of all quadratic residues in $\mathbf{F}_p$ for each prime $p$. A conjecture of A. S\'ark\"ozy asserts, for all sufficiently large $p$, that no subsets $\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B}\subseteq\mathbf{F}_p$ with $|\mathcal{A}|,|\mathcal{B}|\geqslant2$ satisfy $\mathcal{A}+\mathcal{B}=\mathcal{R}_p$. In this paper, we show that if such subsets $\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B}$ do exist, then there are at least $(\log 2)^{-1}\sqrt p-1.6$ elements in $\mathcal{A}+\mathcal{B}$ that have unique representations and one should have \begin{align*} \frac{1}{4}\sqrt{p}< |\mathcal{A}|,|\mathcal{B}|< 2\sqrt{p}-1. \end{align*} This refines previous bounds obtained by I.E. Shparlinski, I.D. Shkredov, and Y.-G. Chen and X.-H. Yan. Moreover, we also establish bounds for $|\mathcal{A}|,|\mathcal{B}|$ and the additive energy $E(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B})$ if few elements in $\mathcal{A}+\mathcal{B}$ have unique representations.
Semi-primitive roots and irreducible quadratic forms

Abstract:Modulo a prime number, we define semi-primitive roots as the square of primitive roots. We present a method for calculating primitive roots from quadratic residues, including semi-primitive roots. We then present progressions that generate primitive and semi-primitive roots, and deduce an algorithm to obtain the full set of primitive roots without any GCD calculation. Next, we present a method for determining irreducible quadratic forms with arbitrarily large conjectured asymptotic density of primes (after Shanks, [1][2]). To this end, we propose an algorithm for calculating the square root modulo p, based on the Tonelli-Shanks algorithm [4].
