Abstract:Let $G_\omega$ be an edge-weighted graph whose underlying graph is $G$. In this paper, we enlarge the class of Cohen-Macaulay edge-weighted graphs $G_\omega$ by classifying completely them when the graph $G$ has girth $5$ or greater.

Abstract:A good edge-labeling of a graph [Araújo, Cohen, Giroire, Havet, Discrete Appl. Math., forthcoming] is an assignment of numbers to the edges such that for no pair of vertices, there exist two non-decreasing paths. In this paper, we study edge-labeling on graphs with girth at least 5. In particular we verify, under this additional hypothesis, a conjecture by Araújo et al. This conjecture states that if the average degree of G is less than 3 and G is minimal without an edge-labeling, then G \in {C_3,K_{2,3}}. (For the case when the girth is 4, we give a counterexample.)

Abstract:Conca and Varbaro (Invent. Math. 221 (2020), no. 3) showed the equality of depth of a graded ideal and its initial ideal in a polynomial ring when the initial ideal is square-free. In this paper, we give some beautiful applications of this fact in the study of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals. We prove that for the characterization of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it is enough to consider only "biconnected graphs with some whisker attached" and this done by investigating the initial ideals. We give several necessary conditions for a binomial edge ideal to be Cohen-Macaulay in terms of smaller graphs. Also, under a hypothesis, we give a sufficient condition for Cohen-Macaulayness of binomial edge ideals in terms of blocks of graphs. Moreover, we show that a graph with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideal has girth less than $5$ or equal to infinity.

Abstract:We characterize unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay edge-weighted edge ideals of very well-covered graphs. We also provide examples of oriented graphs which have unmixed and non-Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted edge ideals, while the edge ideal of their underlying graph is Cohen-Macaulay. This disproves a conjecture posed by Pitones, Reyes and Toledo.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum number of edges in an $N$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with girth $g$ where $g \in \{5,6 \}$. Writing $\textrm{ex}_r ( N, \mathcal{C}_{<g} )$ for this maximum, it is shown that $\textrm{ex}_r ( N , \mathcal{C}_{ < 5} ) = \Omega_r ( N^{3/2 - o(1)} )$ for $r \in \{4,5,6 \}$. We address an unproved claim from [31] asserting a technique of Ruzsa can be used to show that this lower bound holds for all $r \geq 3$. We carefully explain one of the main obstacles that was overlooked at the time the claim from [31] was made, and show that this obstacle can be overcome when $r\in \{4,5,6\}$. We use constructions from coding theory to prove nontrivial lower bounds that hold for all $r \geq 3$. Finally, we use a recent result of Conlon, Fox, Sudakov, and Zhao to show that the sphere packing bound from coding theory may be improved when upper bounding the size of linear $q$-ary codes of distance $6$.

Abstract:We calculate the local cohomology modules of the binomial edge ideals of the complements of connected graphs of girth at least 5 using the tools introduced by Àlvarez Montaner in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1901.08645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.08645">arXiv:1901.08645</a>. We then use this calculation to compute the depth, dimension, and regularity of these binomial edge ideals.

Abstract:We define a simple graph as compact if it lacks even cycles and satisfies the odd-cycle condition. Our focus is on classifying all compact graphs and examining the characteristics of their edge rings. Let $G$ be a compact graph and $\mathbb{K}[G]$ be its edge ring. Specifically, we demonstrate that the Cohen-Macaulay type and the projective dimension of $\mathbb{K}[G]$ are both equal to the number of induced cycles of $G$ minus one, and that the regularity of $\mathbb{K}[G]$ is equal to the matching number of $G_0$. Here, $G_0$ is obtained from $G$ by removing the vertices of degree one successively, resulting in a graph where every vertex has a degree greater than 1.

Abstract:Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng classified the Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of chordal graphs. In this paper, we classify Cohen-Macaulay edge ideals of (vertex) weighted oriented chordal and simplicial graphs, a more general class of monomial ideals. In particular, we show that the Cohen-Macaulay property of these ideals is equivalent to the unmixed one and hence, independent of the underlying field.

Abstract:We classify all connected, simple, 3-regular graphs with girth at least 5 that are Ricci-flat. We use the definition of Ricci curvature on graphs given in Lin-Lu-Yau, Tohoku Math., 2011, which is a variation of Ollivier, J. Funct. Anal., 2009. A graph is Ricci-flat, if it has vanishing Ricci curvature on all edges. We show, that the only Ricci-flat cubic graphs with girth at least 5 are the Petersen graph, the Triplex and the dodecahedral graph. This will correct the classification in Lin-Lu-Yau, Comm. Anal. Geom., 2014, that misses the Triplex.

On tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs of girth 5

Abstract:A subgroup of the automorphism group of a graph $\G$ is said to be {\em half-arc-transitive} on $\G$ if its action on $\G$ is transitive on the vertex set of $\G$ and on the edge set of $\G$ but not on the arc set of $\G$. Tetravalent graphs of girths $3$ and $4$ admitting a half-arc-transitive group of automorphisms have previously been characterized. In this paper we study the examples of girth $5$. We show that, with two exceptions, all such graphs only have directed $5$-cycles with respect to the corresponding induced orientation of the edges. Moreover, we analyze the examples with directed $5$-cycles, study some of their graph theoretic properties and prove that the $5$-cycles of such graphs are always consistent cycles for the given half-arc-transitive group. We also provide infinite families of examples, classify the tetravalent graphs of girth $5$ admitting a half-arc-transitive group of automorphisms relative to which they are tightly-attached and classify the tetravalent half-arc-transitive weak metacirculants of girth $5$.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. The study of the edge ideal [math] of a weighted oriented graph [math] with underlying graph [math] started in the context of Reed–Muller type codes. We generalize some Cohen–Macaulay constructions for [math], which Villarreal gave for edge ideals of simple graphs. Our constructions can be used to produce large classes of Cohen–Macaulay weighted oriented edge ideals. We use these constructions to classify all the Cohen–Macaulay weighted oriented edge ideals, whose underlying graph is a cycle. We also show that [math] is Cohen–Macaulay if and only if [math] is unmixed and [math] is Cohen–Macaulay, where [math] denotes the cycle of length [math]. Miller generalized the concept of Alexander dual ideals of square-free monomial ideals to arbitrary monomial ideals, and in that direction, we study the Alexander dual of [math] and its conditions to be Cohen–Macaulay.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a Gorenstein noncomplete intersection monomial curve in the 4-dimensional affine space with defining ideal $I(C)$. In this article, we use the minimal generating set of $I(C)$ to give a criterion for determining whether the tangent cone of $C$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We also show that if the tangent cone of $C$ is Cohen-Macaulay, then the minimal number of generators of the ideal $I(C)_{\ast}$ is either $5$ or an even integer of the form $2d+2$, for a suitable integer $d$. Additionally, we provide a family of Gorenstein noncomplete intersection monomial curves $C$ whose tangent cone is Cohen-Macaulay and the minimal number of generators of $I(C)_{\ast}$ is large.

Abstract:Recently, Alon introduced the notion of an $H$-code for a graph $H$: a collection of graphs on vertex set $[n]$ is an $H$-code if it contains no two members whose symmetric difference is isomorphic to $H$. Let $D_{H}(n)$ denote the maximum possible cardinality of an $H$-code, and let $d_{H}(n)=D_{H}(n)/2^{n \choose 2}$. Alon observed that a lower bound on $d_{H}(n)$ can be obtained by attaining an upper bound on the number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ has an odd color class. Motivated by this observation, we define $g(G,H)$ to be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color a graph $G$ so that every copy of $H$ has an odd color class. We prove $g(K_n,K_5) \le n^{o(1)}$ and $g(K_{n,n}, C_4)= n/2+o(n)$. The first result shows $d_{K_5}(n) \ge \frac{1}{n^{o(1)}}$ and was obtained independently in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.14682" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.14682">arXiv:2306.14682</a>.

Regularity of two classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals

Abstract:Some recent investigations indicate that for the classification of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it suffices to consider biconnected graphs with some whiskers attached (in short, `block with whiskers'). This paper provides explicit combinatorial formulae for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of two specific classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: (i) chain of cycles with whiskers and (ii) $r$-regular $r$-connected block with whiskers. For the first type, we introduce a new invariant of graphs in terms of the number of blocks in certain induced block graphs, and this invariant may help determine the regularity of other classes of binomial edge ideals. For the second type, we present the formula as a linear function of $r$.
