Abstract:For each primitive Dirichlet character $\chi$, a hypothesis ${\rm GRH}^\dagger[\chi]$ is formulated in terms of zeros of the associated $L$-function $L(s,\chi)$. It is shown that for any such character, ${\rm GRH}^\dagger[\chi]$ is equivalent to the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:For a primitive Dirichlet character $X$, a new hypothesis $RH_{sim}^\dagger[X]$ is introduced, which asserts that (1) all simple zeros of $L(s,X)$ in the critical strip are located on the critical line, and (2) these zeros satisfy some specific conditions on their vertical distribution. Hypothesis $RH_{sim}^\dagger[X]$ is likely to be true since it is a consequence of the generalized Riemann hypothesis. Assuming only the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis, we show that if $RH_{sim}^\dagger[X]$ holds for one primitive character $X$, then it holds for every such character. If this occurs, then for every character $\chi$ (primitive or not), all simple zeros of $L(s,\chi)$ in the critical strip are located on the critical line. In particular, Siegel zeros cannot exist in this situation.

Abstract:$L$ functions based on Dirichlet characters are natural generalizations of the Riemann $\zeta(s)$ function: they both have series representations and satisfy an Euler product representation, i.e. an infinite product taken over prime numbers. In this paper we address the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis relative to the non-trivial complex zeros of the Dirichlet $L$ functions by studying the possibility to enlarge the original domain of convergence of their Euler product. The feasibility of this analytic continuation is ruled by the asymptotic behavior in $N$ of the series $B_N = \sum_{n=1}^N \cos \bigl( t \log p_n - \arg \chi (p_n) \bigr)$ involving Dirichlet characters $\chi$ modulo $q$ on primes $p_n$. Although deterministic, these series have pronounced stochastic features which make them analogous to random time series. We show that the $B_N$'s satisfy various normal law probability distributions. The study of their large asymptotic behavior poses an interesting problem of statistical physics equivalent to the Single Brownian Trajectory Problem, here addressed by defining an appropriate ensemble $\mathcal{E}$ involving intervals of primes. For non-principal characters, we show that the series $B_N$ present a universal diffusive random walk behavior $B_N = O(\sqrt{N})$ in view of the Dirichlet theorem on the equidistribution of reduced residue classes modulo $q$ and the Lemke Oliver-Soundararajan conjecture on the distribution of pairs of residues on consecutive primes. This purely diffusive behavior of $B_N$ implies that the domain of convergence of the infinite product representation of the Dirichlet $L$-functions for non-principal characters can be extended from $\Re(s) > 1$ down to $\Re (s) = \frac{1}{2}$, without encountering any zeros before reaching this critical line.

Abstract:The Generalized Riemann Hypothesis implies that at least 50% of the central values $L \left( \frac{1}{2},\chi\right)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. We show that one may unconditionally go beyond GRH, in the sense that if one averages over primitive characters modulo $q$ and averages $q$ over an interval, then at least 50.073% of the central values are non-vanishing. The proof utilizes the mollification method with a three-piece mollifier, and relies on estimates for sums of Kloosterman sums due to Deshouillers and Iwaniec. Note: The author has been made aware of an error in this work. It seems the error can be fixed, by using a different argument, and the author will present a correction in due course.

Abstract:In this paper, we give Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients that have Riemann's functional equation and real zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions. The details are as follows. Let $L(s,\chi)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function and $G(\chi)$ be the Gauss sum associate with a primitive Dirichlet character $\chi$ (${\rm{mod}} \,\, q$). Put $f (s,\chi) := q^s L(s,\chi) + i^{-\kappa (\chi)} G(\chi) L(s,\overline{\chi})$, where $\overline{\chi}$ is the complex conjugate of $\chi$ and $\kappa (\chi) :=(1-\chi (-1))/2$. Then we prove that $f (s,\chi)$ satisfies Riemann's functional equation appearing in Hamburger's theorem if $\chi$ is even. In addition, we show that $f (\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ all $\sigma \ge 1$. Moreover, we prove that $f(\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le \sigma < 1$ if and only if $L(\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le \sigma < 1$. When $\chi$ is real, all zeros of $f(s,\chi)$ with $\Re (s) >0$ are on the line $\sigma =1/2$ if and only if GRH for $L(s,\chi)$ is true. However, $f (s,\chi)$ has infinitely many zeros off the critical line $\sigma =1/2$ if $\chi$ is non-real.

Abstract:We construct an integrable physical model of a single particle scattering with impurities spread on a circle. The S -matrices of the scattering with the impurities are such that the quantized energies of this system, coming from the Bethe Ansatz equations, correspond to the imaginary parts of the non-trivial zeros of the the Riemann ζ ( s ) function along the axis of the complex s -plane. A simple and natural generalization of the original scattering problem leads instead to Bethe Ansatz equations whose solutions are the non-trivial zeros of the Dirichlet L -functions again along the axis . The conjecture that all the non-trivial zeros of these functions are aligned along this axis of the complex s -plane is known as the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis (GRH). In the language of the scattering problem analysed in this paper the validity of the GRH is equivalent to the completeness of the Bethe Ansatz equations. Moreover the idea that the validity of the GRH requires both the duality equation (i.e. the mapping s → 1 – s ) and the Euler product representation of the Dirichlet L -functions finds additional and novel support from the physical scattering model analysed in this paper. This is further illustrated by an explicit counterexample provided by the solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations which employ the Davenport-Heilbronn function , i.e. a function whose completion satisfies the duality equation χ ( s ) = χ (1 – s ) but that does not have an Euler product representation. In this case, even though there are infinitely many solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations along the axis , there are also infinitely many pairs of solutions away from this axis and symmetrically placed with respect to it.

Abstract:In these lectures we first review the important properties of the Riemann $\zeta$-function that are necessary to understand the nature and importance of the Riemann hypothesis (RH). In particular this first part describes the analytic continuation, the functional equation, trivial zeros, the Euler product formula, Riemann's main result relating the zeros on the critical strip to the distribution of primes, the exact counting formula for the number of zeros on the strip $N(T)$, and the GUE statistics of the zeros on the critical line. We then turn to presenting some new results obtained in the past year and describe several strategies towards proving the RH. First we describe an electrostatic analogy and argue that if the electric potential along the line $\Re (z) =1$ is a regular alternating function, the RH would follow. The main new result is that the zeros on the critical line are in one-to-one correspondence with the zeros of the cosine function, and this leads to a transcendental equation for the $n$-th zero on the critical line that depends only on $n$. If there is a unique solution to this equation for every $n$, denoting $N_0 (T)$ the number of zeros on the critical line, then $N_0(T) = N(T)$, i.e. all zeros are on the critical line. These results are generalized to two infinite classes of functions, Dirichlet $L$-functions and $L$-functions based on modular forms. We present extensive numerical analysis of the solutions of these equations. We apply these methods to the Davenport-Heilbronn $L$-function, which is known to have zeros off of the line, and explain why the RH fails in this case. We also present a new approximation to the $\zeta$-function that is analogous to the Stirling approximation to the $\Gamma$-function. In this updated version we added references to subsequent publications that made progress on open questions posed in the previous version from 10 years ago.

Disproof of the Riemann Hypothesis

Abstract:The Riemann Hypothesis is a conjecture that all non-trivial zeros of Riemann Zeta function are located on the critical line in the complex plane. Hundreds of propositions in function theory and analytic number theory rely on this hypothesis. However, the problem has been unresolved for over a century. Here we show that at least one set of quadruplet-zeros exists outside the critical line through expanding the infinite product of the Riemann Xi zero function. We found that assuming there are no zeros outside the critical line will result in a contradiction with the known result that the reciprocal sum of all zeros of the xi-function is a constant, thereby refuting the Riemann Hypothesis.

Equivalent criteria for the Riemann hypothesis for a general class of $L$-functions

Abstract:In 1916, Riesz gave an equivalent criterion for the Riemann hypothesis (RH). Inspired from Riesz's criterion, Hardy and Littlewood showed that RH is equivalent to the following bound: \begin{align*} P_1(x):= \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{\mu(n)}{n} \exp\left({-\frac{x}{n^2}}\right) = O_{\epsilon}\left( x^{-\frac{1}{4}+ \epsilon } \right), \quad \mathrm{as}\,\, x \rightarrow \infty. \end{align*} Recently, the authors extended the above bound for the generalized Riemann hypothesis for Dirichlet $L$-functions and gave a conjecture for a class of ``nice'' $L$-functions. In this paper, we settle this conjecture. In particular, we give equivalent criteria for the Riemann hypothesis for $L$-functions associated to cusp forms. We also obtain an entirely novel form of equivalent criteria for the Riemann hypothesis of $\zeta(s)$. Furthermore, we generalize an identity of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood for Chandrasekharan-Narasimhan class of $L$-functions.

Abstract:Riemann numerically approximated at least three zeta zeros. According to Edwards, Riemann even took steps to verify that the lowest zero he computed was indeed the first zeta zero. This approach to verification is developed, improved, and generalized to a large class of $L$-functions. Results of numerical calculations demonstrating the efficacy of the method are presented.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we utilize the long resonator method to derive $\Omega$-results for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(\sigma, \chi_d)$, where $d$ runs over all fundamental discriminants with $|d| \leq X$ and $\sigma\in [1/2, 1]$ is fixed. This study advances understanding of the maximum size of $L(\sigma, \chi_d)$ within the segment $\sigma\in [1/2, 1]$. In particular, we improve upon Soundararajan's results at the central point and provide a lower bound on the proportion of fundamental discriminants, uniformly within an expected order of magnitude, up to optimal values of the constant for a fixed $\sigma \in (1/2, 1]$.

Abstract:We explicate the deep Riemann hypothesis for the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ on the convergence of normalised Euler products of standard $L$-functions on the critical line. It conditionally improves upon the error term in the prime number theorem beyond what the grand Riemann hypothesis predicts. Furthermore, we discuss the Chebyshev bias for Satake parameters on $\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ from the perspective of the deep Riemann hypothesis.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group, and let chi be a character of a reductive subgroup H of G. We construct chi-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of G, and we show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two Archimedean nonvanishing hypotheses which are vital to the arithmetic study of special values of certain L-functions via modular symbols.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, it is known that at least half of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. Unconditionally, this is known on average over both $\chi$ modulo $q$ and $Q/2 \leq q \leq 2Q$. We prove that for any $\delta>0$, there exist $\eta_1,\eta_2>0$ depending on $\delta$ such that the non-vanishing proportion for $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ as $\chi$ ranges modulo $q$ with $q$ varying in short intervals of size $Q^{1-\eta_1}$ around $Q$ and in arithmetic progressions with moduli up to $Q^{\eta_2}$ is larger than $\frac{1}{2}-\delta$.

Abstract:Let $L(s,\pi)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\lambda_{\pi}(n)n^{-s}$ be an $L$-function that satisfies a weak form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We prove that large partial sums of $\lambda_{\pi}(n)$ strongly repel the low-lying zeros of $L(s,\pi)$ away from the critical line. Our results extend and quantitatively improve preceding work of Granville and Soundararajan.
