Abstract:We prove that acylindrically hyperbolic groups are monotileable. That is, every finite subset of the group is contained in a finite tile. This provides many new examples of monotileable groups, and progress on the question of whether every countable group is monotileable. In particular, one-relator groups and many Artin groups are monotileable.

Abstract:<div><p>In 2023, two striking, nearly simultaneous, mathematical discoveries have excited their respective communities, one by Greenfeld and Tao, the other (the Hat tile) by Smith, Myers, Kaplan and Goodman-Strauss, which can both be summed up as the following: there exists a single tile that tiles, but not periodically (sometimes dubbed the einstein problem). The two settings and the tools are quite different (as emphasized by their almost disjoint bibliographies): one in euclidean geometry, the other in group theory. Both are highly nontrivial: in the first case, one allows complex shapes; in the second one, also the space to tile may be complex.</p><p>We propose here a framework that embeds both of these problems. We illustrate our setting by transforming the Hat tile into a new aperiodic group monotile, and we describe its symmetries.</p></div>

The domino problem for hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We prove, for every non-virtually free hyperbolic group $G$, that there is no algorithm that, given a finite collection of dominoes, determines whether the Cayley graph of $G$ may be edge-covered by these dominoes so that colours match at vertices. This answers a conjecture by Aubrun, Barbieri and Moutot and goes towards settling a long-standing conjecture of Ballier and Stein.

Abstract:We prove that, for a finitely generated group hyperbolic relative to virtually abelian subgroups, the generalised word problem for a parabolic subgroup is the language of a real-time Turing machine. Then, for a hyperbolic group, we show that the generalised word problem for a quasiconvex subgroup is a real-time language under either of two additional hypotheses on the subgroup. By extending the Muller-Schupp theorem we show that the generalised word problem for a finitely generated subgroup of a finitely generated virtually free group is context-free. Conversely, we prove that a hyperbolic group must be virtually free if it has a torsion-free quasiconvex subgroup of infinite index with context-free generalised word problem.

Abstract:In 1996, Gersten proved that finitely presented subgroups of a word hyperbolic group of integral cohomological dimension 2 are hyperbolic. We use isoperimetric inequalities over arbitrary rings to extend this result to any ring. In particular, we study the discrete isoperimetric function and show that its linearity is equivalent to hyperbolicity, which is also equivalent to it being subquadratic. We further use these ideas to obtain conditions for subgroups of higher rank hyperbolic groups to be again higher rank hyperbolic of the same rank. The appendix discusses the equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities and coning inequalities in the simplicial setting and the general setting, leading to combinatorial definitions of higher rank hyperbolicity in the setting of simplicial complexes and allowing us to give elementary definitions of higher rank hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We look at sets of tiles that can tile any region of size greater than 1 on the square grid. This is not the typical tiling question, but relates closely to it and therefore can help solve other tiling problems -- we give an example of this. We also present a result to a more classic tiling question with dominoes and L-shape tiles.

Abstract:We prove that for any infinite countable amenable group G, any epsilon > 0 and any finite subset K subset of G, there exists a tiling (partition of G into finite "tiles" using only finitely many "shapes"), where all the tiles are (K, epsilon)-invariant. Moreover, our tiling has topological entropy zero (i.e., subexponential complexity of patterns). As an application, we construct a free action of G (in the sense that the mappings, associated to elements of G other than the unit, have no fixed points) on a zero-dimensional space, such that the topological entropy of this action is zero.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Hyperbolic actions of Thompson's group $F$ and generalizations

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Abstract:Given isometric actions by a group G on finitely many \delta-hyperbolic metric spaces, we provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of a single element in G that is hyperbolic for each action. As an application we prove a conjecture of Handel and Mosher regarding relatively fully irreducible subgroups and elements in the outer automorphism group of a free group.

Abstract:Going beyond the cohomological invariants attached to tiling spaces via inverse limit constructions, Clark and Hunton introduced shape group invariants, and showed these invariants in dimension one give new information. We show for dimensions greater than one that these groups are trivial. To do this, we show that the topological hull associated to a tiling in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is the inverse limit of aspherical branched manifolds. The result follows from work of Gromov and others on complete geodesic spaces of nonpositive Alexandrov curvature, along with some simple observations.

Abstract:We generalize Gruber--Sisto's construction of the coned--off graph of a small cancellation group to build a partially ordered set $\mathcal{TC}$ of cobounded actions of a given small cancellation group whose smallest element is the action on the Gruber--Sisto coned--off graph. In almost all cases $\mathcal{TC}$ is incredibly rich: it has a largest element if and only if it has exactly 1 element, and given any two distinct comparable actions $[G\curvearrowright X] \preceq [G\curvearrowright Y]$ in this poset, there is an embeddeding $\iota:P(\omega)\to\mathcal{TC}$ such that $\iota(\emptyset)=[G\curvearrowright X]$ and $\iota(\mathbb N)=[G\curvearrowright Y]$. We use this poset to prove that there are uncountably many quasi--isometry classes of finitely generated group which admit two cobounded acylindrical actions on hyperbolic spaces such that there is no action on a hyperbolic space which is larger than both.

Abstract:Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen, and Rubinstein classified tetrahedra all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ into two one-parameter families (a Hill family and a new family) and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra. In this paper, we consider which of them tile space; we show that every member of the Hill family, exactly one member of the new family, and at most $40$ sporadic tetrahedra tile space. As a corollary, we disprove the converse of Debrunner's theorem, showing that not all Dehn invariant zero tetrahedra tile space.

Periodicity of tiles in finite Abelian groups

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the concept of periodic tiling (PT) property for finite abelian groups. A group has the PT property if any non-periodic set that tiles the group by translation has a periodic tiling complement. This property extends the scope beyond groups with the Hajós property. We classify all cyclic groups having the PT property. Additionally, we construct groups that possess the PT property but without the Hajós property. As byproduct, we identify new groups for which the implication ``Tile $\Longrightarrow$ Spectral" holds. For elementary $p$-groups having the PT property, we show that a tile must be a complete set of representatives of the cosets of some subgroup, by analyzing the structure of tiles.
