This representation is particularly useful to highlight the asymmetric character of the heating and cooling processes, when they are analyzed from the second-law perspective.

Abstract:In this note, the equilibrium curve of a thermodynamic system is used to depict entropy production in the process of thermalization with a reservoir. For the given initial and final equilibrium states of the system, the entropy production is reduced when work is also extracted during thermalization. The case of maximum work extraction corresponds to a reversible process. For less than optimal work extraction, the lost available work is shown to be directly proportional to the entropy produced.

Abstract:In this paper, through a criticism of what we call the paradigmatic view of thermodynamics, we aim at showing a new perspective attained in this matter. The generalization of heat as internal energy (generalization of the kinetic energy concept of heat) permits the generalization of the Kelvin postulate: "It is impossible, without another effect, to convert internal energy into work" (no reference to heat or to heat reservoir).

Abstract:The classical expression for entropy production is a bilinear product of generalized forces and fluxes. The combination of the Cattaneo-Vernotte model with the classical entropy expression gives a non-quadratic form, which needs to be mended to avoid the paradox of negative entropy production. Based on the thermomass theory, it is shown that the entropy production corresponds to the dissipation of the mechanical energy of thermomass flow. Therefore, the generalized forces in the entropy production should be the friction force rather than the driving force. The friction force is proportional to the heat flux. The general entropy production is thus derived as a quadratic form of heat flux, avoiding the paradox of the negative entropy production. The generalized forces and fluxes in other irreversible transport processes are investigated following the similar framework. The friction forces, driving forces and drift velocities are clarified for these transports and the general entropy production for various transport processes are derived.

Abstract:No one has yet investigated the information reach and influence of thermal analysis. Even so the heat and entropy are bound closely. The very problem of the term entropy is that it was defined specifically within the classical, equilibrium Thermodynamics like Clausius entropy, while its meaning is more general. It is usable in all areas of physics, in the communication theory and technology, and also, in social sciences, just as an universal quantitative model. The bridge to this wider world is in Boltzmann's statistical point of view used in the Shannon's information point of view. The difference is that the Shannon entropy is defined more generally, both for the uniform and for the not uniform probability distributions. But with renormalization and with the Boltzmann constant we can speak, using the Clausius entropy, about a certain thermodynamic system considered as a heat model of the area of our wider interests. So we will to deal with the heat and its entropy embodied to a wider consideration. In addition to the standard physical meaning, another thermodynamic realization in the form of a message is derived from Shannon's information theory, where the sample carries a measure of Shannon's information given by its structure or internal organization. This is also a contribution to improving the approach to thinking about the importance of observation and measurement, reflecting at the same time the costs and influence of the measurement itself and its organization on the measured object or, on its environment or, even on the environment of the measuring itself generally. Statistical sorting also carries with it the internal movement of individual elementary particles, the value of which indicates the resulting state of heat transfer and dissipation to and from the system providing a state of called equilibrium. It is statistically described by a weighted quantity called temperature, the changes of which via momentum alteration satisfy Newton's laws of inertia allowing enumeration of the related heat information processing. The terminology used is still non-institutional.

Abstract:We analyze the equilibrium space of an ideal gas using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics. We introduce the concept of thermodynamic geodesics to show that the equilibrium space around a particular initial state can be divided into two regions, one that can be reached using thermodynamic geodesics and the second one forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, we show that, along thermodynamic geodesics, entropy is a linear function of the affine parameter, indicating that it can be used as a time parameter with a particular arrow of time determined by the direction in which entropy increases. We argue that entropy can also be interpreted locally as time in the case of any thermodynamic system in equilibrium and systems described within the scope of linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:By using entropy and entropy production, we calculate the steady flux of some phenomena. The method we use is a competition method, $S_S/\tau+\sigma={\it maximum}$, where $S_S$ is system entropy, $\sigma$ is entropy production and $\tau$ is microscopic interaction time. System entropy is calculated from the equilibrium state by studying the flux fluctuations. The phenomena we study include ionic conduction, atomic diffusion, thermal conduction and viscosity of a dilute gas.

Abstract:A complete mathematical theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics of stochastic systems in terms of master equations is presented. As generalizations of isothermal entropy and free energy, two functions of states play central roles: the Gibbs entropy $S$ and the relative entropy $F$, which are related via the stationary distribution of the stochastic dynamics. $S$ satisfies the fundamental entropy balance equation $dS/dt=e_p-h_d/T$ with entropy production rate $e_p\ge 0$ and heat dissipation rate $h_d$, while $dF/dt=-f_d\le 0$. For closed systems that satisfy detailed balance: $Te_p(t)=f_d(t)$. For open system one has $Te_p(t)=f_d(t)+Q_{hk}(t)$ where the housekeeping heat $Q_{hk}\ge 0$ was first introduced in the phenomenological nonequilibrium steady state thermodynamics. Entropy production $e_p$ consists of free energy dissipation associated with spontaneous relaxation, $f_d$, and active energy pumping that sustains the open system $Q_{hk}$. The amount of excess heat involved in the relaxation $Q_{ex}=h_d-Q_{hk} = f_d-T(dS/dt)$.

Abstract:The entropy production in classical irreversible thermodynamics is expressed as a bilinear form of generalized (driving) forces and conjugated (driven) fluxes, which suffers from the arbitrary decomposition of the forces and the fluxes, and the possible negative entropy production in non-Fourier heat conduction problems (heat waves). This paper presents a general form of the entropy production for heat conduction based on the thermomass model, which is the product of the friction force and the drift velocity of the thermomass divided by the temperature; it holds true for both Fourier and non-Fourier heat conduction. Then a generalization of the entropy production is given for other kinds of linear and nonlinear transport processes. The general expression for entropy production is consistent with that given by extended irreversible thermodynamics, where the system entropy depends not only on the classical variables, but also on the dissipative fluxes, for example, the heat flux in heat conduction problems.
Generalized $α$-Observational Entropy and Thermodynamic Entropy Production

Abstract:Traditional measures of entropy, like the Von Neumann entropy, while fundamental in quantum information theory, are insufficient when interpreted as thermodynamic entropy due to their invariance under unitary transformations, which contradicts observed entropy increases in isolated systems. Recognizing this limitations of existing measures for thermodynamic entropy, recent research has focused on observational entropy (OE) as a promising alternative, offering practical applicability and theoretical insights. In this work, we extend the scope of observational entropy by generalizing it to a parameterized version called $\alpha$-Observational entropy ($\alpha$-OE). $\alpha$-OE is expressed in terms of the Petz-Rényi relative entropy between the states on which a quantum-to-classical channel is applied. The $\alpha$-OE reduces to OE under $\alpha\rightarrow 1$. We prove various properties of the $\alpha$-OE, which are the generalization of the properties of OE, including the monotonically increasing of $\alpha$-OE as a function of refinement of coarse-graining. We further explore the role of $\alpha$-OE in thermodynamic contexts, particularly for the entropy production in open and closed quantum systems and its relation with the Helmholtz free energy.

Abstract:Entransy, a recently developed concept, is the central physical quantity characterizing heat transfer processes not related to heat-to-work conversions. The entransy of an object pertains to the nature of the potential energy of heat in a thermal field and describes its heat transfer ability. In the present study, we revisit this concept, and develop its relationship to state and process quantities. This then enables a direct comparison to the more familiar concept, entropy, the central physical quantity in thermodynamics. The comparison helps to identify the role entransy has in heat transfer processes and highlight under what conditions state and process quantities related to entransy can be distinguished in such processes. As to embody the entransy loss due to work expended between the system and its environment for the irreversible heat conduction in gases, new quantities, available entransy flow and available system entransy are introduced. Both the entransy of solids and the available system entransy of gases are state quantities and their changes correspond to the entransy flow and the available entransy flow respectively. Thus there is no need to stress the difference between process quantity and state quantity in heat transfer.
Entropy production and the geometry of dissipative evolution equations

Abstract:Purely dissipative evolution equations are often cast as gradient flow structures, z ̇=K(z)DS(z), where the variable z of interest evolves towards the maximum of a functional S according to a metric defined by an operator K. While the functional often follows immediately from physical considerations (e.g., the thermodynamic entropy), the operator K and the associated geometry does not necessarily do so (e.g., Wasserstein geometry for diffusion). In this paper, we present a variational statement in the sense of maximum entropy production that directly delivers a relationship between the operator K and the constraints of the system. In particular, the Wasserstein metric naturally arises here from the conservation of mass or energy, and depends on the Onsager resistivity tensor, which, itself, may be understood as another metric, as in the steepest entropy ascent formalism. This variational principle is exemplified here for the simultaneous evolution of conserved and nonconserved quantities in open systems. It thus extends the classical Onsager flux-force relationships and the associated variational statement to variables that do not have a flux associated to them. We further show that the metric structure K is intimately linked to the celebrated Freidlin-Wentzell theory of stochastically perturbed gradient flows, and that the proposed variational principle encloses an infinite-dimensional fluctuation-dissipation statement.

Abstract:In this article, we continue the program started in [2] of exploring an important class of thermodynamic systems from a geometric point of view. The contents of this paper and the one already published in [2] provide a geometrical formulation, which tries to shed more light on the properties of thermodynamic systems without claiming to be a definitive theory. In order to model the time evolution of systems verifying the two laws of thermodynamics, we show that the notion of evolution vector field is adequate to appropriately describe such systems. Our formulation naturally arises from the introduction of a skew-symmetric bracket to which numerical methods based on discrete gradients fit nicely. Moreover, we study the corresponding Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, discussing the fundamental principles from which the equations are derived. An important class of systems that is naturally covered by our formalism are composed thermodynamic systems, which are described by at least two thermal variables and exchange heat between its components.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium system is characterized by a set of thermodynamic forces and fluxes which give rise to entropy production (EP). We show that these forces and fluxes have an information-geometric structure, which allows us to decompose EP into contributions from different types of forces in general (linear and nonlinear) discrete systems. We focus on the excess and housekeeping decomposition, which separates contributions from conservative and nonconservative forces. Unlike the Hatano-Sasa decomposition, our housekeeping/excess terms are always well-defined, including in systems with odd variables and nonlinear systems without steady states. Our decomposition leads to far-from-equilibrium thermodynamic uncertainty relations and speed limits. As an illustration, we derive a thermodynamic bound on the time necessary for one cycle in a chemical oscillator.

Abstract:According to the first and second laws of thermodynamics and the definitions of work and heat, microscopic expressions for the non-equilibrium entropy production have been achieved. Recently, a redefinition of heat has been presented in [\href{Nature Communicationsvolume 8, Article number: 2180 (2017)}{Nat. Commun. 8, 2180 (2017)}]. We are going to determine how this redefinition of heat could affect the expression of the entropy production. Utilizing this new definition of heat, it could be found out that there is a new expression for the entropy production for thermal operations. It could be derived if the initial state of the system and the bath is factorized, and if the total entropy of composite system is preserved, then the new entropy production will be equal to mutual information between the system and the bath. It is shown that if the initial state of the system is diagonal in energy bases, then the thermal operations cannot create a quantum correlation between the system and the bath.

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics and the concept of positive entropy generation are analyzed following classical statistical mechanics methods. Previously, using the generalized Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy and its associated general entropy conservation relation, positive entropy generation expressions were obtained in agreement with phenomenological results and the work of Boltzmann and Gibbs. In this study, using the general approach, we formally and explicitly trace the specific entropy generation expressions to truncations in the full N-body description of the entropy state to a lower s-body description. Using higher-order superposition approximations, it is formally shown that the generalized Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy in the s-order state is always less than the corresponding Boltzmann–Gibbs entropy in the lower (s − 1)-order state. Using the general form of the entropy conservation equation, entropy generation is shown to be a required compensatory effect to ensure that all physical variables and physical processes associated with heat, work, temperature, etc., are independent of the particular entropy definition state.

Entropy production in continuous systems with unidirectional transitions

Abstract:We derive the expression for the entropy production for stochastic dynamics defined on a continuous space of states containing unidirectional transitions. The expression is derived by taking the continuous limit of a stochastic dynamics on a discrete space of states and is based on an expression for the entropy production appropriate for unidirectional transition. Our results shows that the entropy flux is the negative of the divergence of the vector firld whose components are the rates at which a dynamic variable changes in time. For a Hamiltonian dynamical system, it follows from this result that the entropy flux vanish identically.

Abstract:Two qualitatively different ways of driving a physical system out of equilibrium, i.e., time-dependent and nonconservative forcing, are reflected by the decomposition of the system's entropy production into excess and housekeeping parts. We show that the difference between these two types of driving gives rise to a geometric formulation in terms of two orthogonal contributions to the currents in the system. This geometric picture in a natural way leads to variational expressions for both the excess and housekeeping entropy, which allow calculating both contributions independently from the trajectory data of the system. Energy and entropy on irreversible chemical reaction-diffusion systems with asymptotic stability

Abstract:In the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we study autonomous systems of reaction-diffusion equations to show how the entropy and free energy of an open and irreversible reactor depend on concentrations. To do this, we find a Lyapunov function that depends directly on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the linearized problem valid for linear and asymptotically stable systems. By suggesting the role of this Lyapunov function as internal free energy, we were able to reflect the properties of the dynamical system directly into the second law of thermodynamics making a redefinition of the chemical potentials. We demonstrate the consistency of our hypotheses with basic thermodynamic principles such as the proportionality between flows and forces proposed by Onsager, the spectral decomposition of entropy production and the Glansdorff-Prigogine evolution criterion of a thermodynamic system.

Abstract:Stochastic entropy production, which quantifies the difference between the probabilities of trajectories of a stochastic dynamics and its time reversals, has a central role in nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In the theory of probability, the change in the statistical properties of observables can be represented by a change in the probability measure. We consider operators on the space of probability measure that induce changes in the statistical properties of a process, and formulate entropy productions in terms of these change-of-probability-measure (CPM) operators. This mathematical underpinning of the origin of entropy productions allows us to achieve an organization of various forms of fluctuation relations: All entropy productions have a non-negative mean value, admit the integral fluctuation theorem, and satisfy a rather general fluctuation relation. Other results such as the transient fluctuation theorem and detailed fluctuation theorems then are derived from the general fluctuation relation with more constraints on the operator. We use a discrete-time, discrete-state-space Markov process to draw the contradistinction among three reversals of a process: time reversal, protocol reversal and the dual process. The properties of their corresponding CPM operators are examined, and the domains of validity of various fluctuation relations for entropy productions in physics and chemistry are revealed. We also show that our CPM operator formalism can help us rather easily extend other fluctuations relations for excess work and heat, discuss the martingale properties of entropy productions, and derive the stochastic integral formulas for entropy productions in constant-noise diffusion process with Girsanov theorem. Our formalism provides a general and concise way to study the properties of entropy-related quantities in stochastic thermodynamics and information theory.

Abstract:Stochastic thermodynamics provides the framework to analyze thermodynamic laws and quantities along individual trajectories of small but fully observable systems. If the observable level fails to capture all relevant degrees of freedom, some form of effective, coarse-grained dynamics naturally emerges for which the principles of stochastic thermodynamics generally cease to be applicable straightforwardly. Our work unifies the notion of entropy production along an individual trajectory with that of a coarse-grained dynamics by establishing a framework based on snippets and Markovian events as fundamental building blocks. A key asset of a trajectory-based fluctuating entropy production is the ability to localize individual contributions to the total entropy production in time and space. As an illustration and potential application for inference we introduce a method for the detection of hidden driving. The framework applies equally to even and odd variables and, therefore, includes the peculiar case of entropy production in underdamped Langevin dynamics.
