Abstract:We interpret a class of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations with reaction as gradient flows over the space of Radon measures equipped with the recently introduced Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving entropy of the gradient flow is not assumed to be geodesically convex or semi-convex. We prove new generalized dissipation inequalities, which allow us to control the relative entropy by its production. We establish the entropic exponential convergence of the trajectories of the flow to the equilibrium. Along with other applications, this result has an ecological interpretation as a trend to the ideal free distribution for a class of fitness-driven models of population dynamics. Our existence theorem for weak solutions under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity is new even in the absence of the reaction term.

Abstract:A non-vanishing entropy production rate is a hallmark of non-equilibrium stationary states and is therefore at the heart of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is a manifestation of a steady circulation $J_{\rm inv}$ along the level sets of the invariant density $\rho_{\rm inv}$, and is thus generically used to quantify how far a steady system is driven out of equilibrium. While it is well known that there exists a continuum of distinct steady states with the same invariant measure, the question how the geometry and topology of the invariant current a priori affect dissipation remained elusive. For confined irreversible diffusions we identify two minimal descriptors, the $\rho_{\rm inv}$-weighted vorticity and the variation of $J_{\rm inv}$ along level sets of $\rho_{\rm inv}$, and prove that these jointly bound from above the steady-state entropy production rate. In regions where $\rho_{\rm inv}$ is close to Gaussian the bound is dominated solely by the vorticity of the drift field and in the low-noise (Freidlin-Wentzel) limit by any non-potential contribution to the drift, rendering $J_{\rm inv}$ virtually constant along the level sets of $\rho_{\rm inv}$.

Variational structures beyond gradient flows: a macroscopic fluctuation-theory perspective

Abstract:Macroscopic equations arising out of stochastic particle systems in detailed balance (called dissipative systems or gradient flows) have a natural variational structure, which can be derived from the large-deviation rate functional for the density of the particle system. While large deviations can be studied in considerable generality, these variational structures are often restricted to systems in detailed balance. Using insights from macroscopic fluctuation theory, in this work we aim to generalise this variational connection beyond dissipative systems by augmenting densities with fluxes, which encode non-dissipative effects. Our main contribution is an abstract framework, which for a given flux-density cost and a quasipotential, provides a decomposition into dissipative and non-dissipative components and a generalised orthogonality relation between them. We then apply this abstract theory to various stochastic particle systems -- independent copies of jump processes, zero-range processes, chemical-reaction networks in complex balance and lattice-gas models.

Abstract:Entropy increase is fundamentally related to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. By adding the 'extra dimension' associated with thermodynamic forces, we extend that discrete symmetry to a continuous symmetry for the dynamical fluctuations around (nonlinear) gradient flow. The latter connects macroscopic equilibrium conditions upon introducing a quasistatic protocol of control parameters. The entropy state function becomes the Noether charge. As a result, and following ideas expressed by Shin-ichi Sasa and co-workers, the adiabatic invariance of the entropy, part of the Clausius heat theorem, gets connected with the Noether theorem.

Abstract:We consider variational problem related to entropy maximization in the two-dimensional Euler equations, in order to investigate the long-time dynamics of solutions with bounded vorticity. Using variations on the classical min-max principle and borrowing ideas from optimal transportation and quantitative rearrangement inequalities, we prove results on the structure of entropy maximizers arising in the investigation of the long-time behavior of vortex patches. We further show that the same techniques apply in the study of stability of the canonical Gibbs measure associated to a system of point vortices.

A Lagrangian approach to totally dissipative evolutions in Wasserstein spaces

Abstract:We introduce and study the class of totally dissipative multivalued probability vector fields (MPVF) $\boldsymbol{\mathrm F}$ on the Wasserstein space $(\mathcal{P}_2(\mathsf{X}),W_2)$ of Euclidean or Hilbertian probability measures. We show that such class of MPVFs is in one to one correspondence with law-invariant dissipative operators in a Hilbert space $L^2(\Omega,\mathcal{B},\mathbb{P};\mathsf{X})$ of random variables, preserving a natural maximality property. This allows us to import in the Wasserstein framework many of the powerful tools from the theory of maximal dissipative operators in Hilbert spaces, deriving existence, uniqueness, stability, and approximation results for the flow generated by a maximal totally dissipative MPVF and the equivalence of its Eulerian and Lagrangian characterizations. We will show that demicontinuous single-valued probability vector fields satisfying a metric dissipativity condition are in fact totally dissipative. Starting from a sufficiently rich set of discrete measures, we will also show how to recover a unique maximal totally dissipative version of a MPVF, proving that its flow provides a general mean field characterization of the asymptotic limits of the corresponding family of discrete particle systems.Such an approach also reveals new interesting structural properties for gradient flows of displacement convex functionals with a core of discrete measures dense in energy.

Dissipation in Hydrodynamics from Micro- to Macroscale: Wisdom from Boltzmann and Stochastic Thermodynamics

Abstract:We show that macroscopic irreversible thermodynamics for viscous fluids can be derived from exact information-theoretic thermodynamic identities valid at the microscale. Entropy production, in particular, is a measure of the loss of many-particle correlations in the same way in which it measures the loss of system-reservoirs correlations in stochastic thermodynamics (ST). More specifically, we first show that boundary conditions at the macroscopic level define a natural decomposition of the entropy production rate (EPR) in terms of thermodynamic forces multiplying their conjugate currents, as well as a change in suitable nonequilibrium potential that acts as a Lyapunov function in the absence of forces. Moving to the microscale, we identify the exact identities at the origin of these dissipative contributions for isolated Hamiltonian systems. We then show that the molecular chaos hypothesis, which gives rise to the Boltzmann equation at the mesoscale, leads to a positive rate of loss of many-particle correlations, which we identify with the Boltzmann EPR. By generalizing the Boltzmann equation to account for boundaries with nonuniform temperature and nonzero velocity, and resorting to the Chapman-Enskog expansion, we recover the macroscopic theory we started from. Finally, using a linearized Boltzmann equation we derive ST for dilute particles in a weakly out-of-equilibrium fluid and its corresponding macroscopic thermodynamics. Our work unambiguously demonstrates the information-theoretical origin of thermodynamic notions of entropy and dissipation in macroscale irreversible thermodynamics.

Abstract:For a generic overdamped Langevin dynamics driven out of equilibrium by both time-dependent and nonconservative forces, the entropy production rate can be decomposed into two positive terms, termed excess and housekeeping entropy. However, this decomposition is not unique: There are two distinct decompositions, one due to Hatano and Sasa, the other one due to Maes and Netočny. Here, we establish the connection between these two decompositions and provide a simple, geometric interpretation. We show that this leads to a decomposition of the entropy production rate into three positive terms, which we call excess, housekeeping and coupling part, respectively. The coupling part characterizes the interplay between the time-dependent and nonconservative forces. We also derive thermodynamic uncertainty relations for the excess and housekeeping entropy in both the Hatano-Sasa and Maes-Netočny-decomposition and show that all quantities obey integral fluctuation theorems. We illustrate the decomposition into three terms using a solvable example of a dragged particle in a nonconservative force field.

A formal gradient flow interpretation of a class of McKean-Vlasov equations using a new adaptation of the Wasserstein metric

Abstract:A new adaptation of the Wasserstein metric over the space of probability measures is presented, the associated formal Otto calculus developed, and some transport inequalities are proven. An instance of this new metric can be viewed as a curved version of the dual space of a second-order Sobolev-like factor space; in a similar way that the linearization of the classical 2-Wasserstein metric is the dual norm of the first-order, homogeneous Sobolev space. This new metric structure permits an intuitive gradient flow interpretation of a class of nonlinear, nonlocal integro-differential evolution equations of the McKean-Vlasov type that arise at the intersection of mathematics, economics, and physics. Moreover, in the same way that classical $W_2$ gradient flow theory connects heat flow and the second law of thermodynamics by way of Boltzmann entropy, the generalization here gives rise to a principle of econophysics that is much of the same flavor but for the Gini coefficient of economic inequality.

Abstract:We show that the principle of maximum entropy, a variational method appearing in statistical inference, statistical physics, and the analysis of stochastic dynamical systems, admits a geometric description from gauge theory. Using the connection on a principal $G$-bundle, the gradient flow maximising entropy is written in terms of constraint functions which interact with the dynamics of the probabilistic degrees of freedom of a diffusion process. This allows us to describe the point of maximum entropy as parallel transport over the state space. In particular, it is proven that the solubility of the stationary Fokker--Planck equation corresponds to the existence of parallel transport in a particular associated vector bundle, extending classic results due to Jordan--Kinderlehrer--Otto and Markowich--Villani. A reinterpretation of splitting results in stochastic dynamical systems is also suggested. Beyond stochastic analysis, we are able to indicate a collection of geometric structures surrounding energy-based inference in statistics.

Onsager's "Ideal Turbulence" Theory

Abstract:Lars Onsager in 1945-1949 made an exact analysis of the high Reynolds-number limit for individual turbulent flow realizations modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, motivated by experimental observations that dissipation of kinetic energy does not vanish. I review here developments spurred by his key idea, that such flows are well-described by distributional or "weak" solutions of ideal Euler equations. 1/3 Hölder singularities of the velocity field were predicted by Onsager and since observed. His theory describes turbulent energy cascade without probabilistic assumptions and yields a local, deterministic version of the Kolmogorov 4/5th law. The approach is closely related to renormalization group methods in physics and envisages "conservation-law anomalies", as discovered later in quantum field theory. There are also deep connections with Large-Eddy Simulation modeling. More recently, dissipative Euler solutions of the type conjectured by Onsager have been constructed and his 1/3 Hölder singularity proved to be the sharp threshold for anomalous dissipation. This progress has been achieved by an unexpected connection with work of John Nash on isometric embeddings of low regularity or "convex integration" techniques. The dissipative Euler solutions yielded by this method are wildly non-unique for fixed initial data, suggesting "spontaneously stochastic" behavior of high-Reynolds number solutions. I focus in particular on applications to wall-bounded turbulence, leading to novel concepts of spatial cascades of momentum, energy and vorticity to or from the wall as deterministic, space-time local phenomena. This theory thus makes testable predictions and offers new perspectives on Large-Eddy Simulation in presence of solid walls.

The entropy production of stationary diffusions

Abstract:The entropy production rate is a central quantity in non-equilibrium statistical physics, scoring how far a stochastic process is from being time-reversible. In this paper, we compute the entropy production of diffusion processes at non-equilibrium steady-state under the condition that the time-reversal of the diffusion remains a diffusion. We start by characterising the entropy production of both discrete and continuous-time Markov processes. We investigate the time-reversal of time-homogeneous stationary diffusions and recall the most general conditions for the reversibility of the diffusion property, which includes hypoelliptic and degenerate diffusions, and locally Lipschitz vector fields. We decompose the drift into its time-reversible and irreversible parts, or equivalently, the generator into symmetric and antisymmetric operators. We show the equivalence with a decomposition of the backward Kolmogorov equation considered in hypocoercivity theory, and a decomposition of the Fokker-Planck equation in GENERIC form. The main result shows that when the time-irreversible part of the drift is in the range of the volatility matrix (almost everywhere) the forward and time-reversed path space measures of the process are mutually equivalent, and evaluates the entropy production. When this does not hold, the measures are mutually singular and the entropy production is infinite. We verify these results using exact numerical simulations of linear diffusions. We illustrate the discrepancy between the entropy production of non-linear diffusions and their numerical simulations in several examples and illustrate how the entropy production can be used for accurate numerical simulation. Finally, we discuss the relationship between time-irreversibility and sampling efficiency, and how we can modify the definition of entropy production to score how far a process is from being generalised reversible.

Gradient flow for a class of diffusion equations with Dirichlet boundary data

Abstract:In this paper we provide a variational characterisation for a class of non-linear evolution equations with constant non-negative Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain as gradient flows in the space of non-negative measures. The relevant geometry is given by the modified Wasserstein distance introduced by Figalli and Gigli that allows for a change of mass by letting the boundary act as a reservoir. We give a dynamic formulation of this distance as an action minimisation problem for curves of non-negative measures satisfying a continuity equation in the spirit of Benamou-Brenier. Then we characterise solutions to non-linear diffusion equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions as metric gradient flows of internal energy functionals in the sense of curves of maximal slope.

Mesoscopic and Macroscopic Entropy Balance Equations in a Stochastic Dynamics and Its Deterministic Limit

Abstract:Entropy, its production, and its change in a dynamical system can be understood from either a fully stochastic dynamic description or from a deterministic dynamics exhibiting chaotic behavior. By taking the former approach based on the general diffusion process with diffusion $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf D}(\bf x)$ and drift $\bf b(\bf x)$, where $\alpha$ represents the ``size parameter'' of a system, we show that there are two distinctly different entropy balance equations. One reads ${\rm d} S^{(\alpha)}/{\rm d} t = e^{(\alpha)}_p + Q^{(\alpha)}_{ex}$ for all $\alpha$. However, the leading $\alpha$-order, ``extensive'', terms of the entropy production rate $e^{(\alpha)}_p$ and heat exchange rate $Q^{(\alpha)}_{ex}$ are exactly cancelled. Therefore, in the asymptotic limit of $\alpha\to\infty$, there is a second, local ${\rm d} S/{\rm d} t = \nabla\cdot{\bf b}({\bf x}(t))+\left({\bf D}:{\bf \Sigma}^{-1}\right)({\bf x}(t))$ on the order of $O(1)$, where $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf D}(\bf x(t))$ represents the randomness generated in the dynamics usually represented by metric entropy, and $\tfrac{1}{\alpha}{\bf \Sigma}({\bf x}(t))$ is the covariance matrix of the local Gaussian description at ${\bf x}(t)$, which is a solution to the ordinary differential equation $\dot{\bf x}={\bf b}(\bf x)$ at time $t$. This latter equation is akin to the notions of volume-preserving conservative dynamics and entropy production in the deterministic dynamic approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics {\it à la} D. Abstract:The aggregation equation arises naturally in kinetic theory in the study of granular media, and its interpretation as a 2-Wasserstein gradient flow for the nonlocal interaction energy is well-known. Starting from the spatially homogeneous inelastic Boltzmann equation, a formal Taylor expansion reveals a link between this equation and the aggregation equation with an appropriately chosen interaction potential. Inspired by this formal link and the fact that the associated aggregation equation also dissipates the kinetic energy, we present a novel way of interpreting the aggregation equation as a gradient flow, in the sense of curves of maximal slope, of the kinetic energy, rather than the usual interaction energy, with respect to an appropriately constructed transportation metric on the space of probability measures.

General Entropy Production Based On Dynamical Analysis

Abstract:The classical expression for entropy production is a bilinear product of generalized forces and fluxes. The combination of the Cattaneo-Vernotte model with the classical entropy expression gives a non-quadratic form, which needs to be mended to avoid the paradox of negative entropy production. Based on the thermomass theory, it is shown that the entropy production corresponds to the dissipation of the mechanical energy of thermomass flow. Therefore, the generalized forces in the entropy production should be the friction force rather than the driving force. The friction force is proportional to the heat flux. The general entropy production is thus derived as a quadratic form of heat flux, avoiding the paradox of the negative entropy production. The generalized forces and fluxes in other irreversible transport processes are investigated following the similar framework. The friction forces, driving forces and drift velocities are clarified for these transports and the general entropy production for various transport processes are derived.

Abstract:We derive the Hessian geometric structure of nonequilibrium chemical reaction networks (CRN) on the flux and force spaces induced by the Legendre duality of convex dissipation functions and characterize their dynamics as a generalized flow. With this structure, we can extend theories of nonequilibrium systems with quadratic dissipation functions to more general ones with nonquadratic ones, which are pivotal for studying chemical reaction networks. By applying generalized notions of orthogonality in Hessian geometry to chemical reaction networks, we obtain two generalized decompositions of the entropy production rate, each of which captures gradient-flow and minimum-dissipation aspects in nonequilibrium dynamics.
