Abstract:We prove that if $u : B_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ is a Lipschitz critical point of the area functional with respect to outer variations, then $u$ is smooth. This solves a conjecture of Lawson and Osserman from 1977 in the planar case.

Abstract:We derive estimates of the Hessian of two smooth functions defined on Grassmannian manifold. Based on it, we can derive curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space via Gauss map as in [Y.L. Xin, Ling Yang, Curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds of higher codimension, arXiv: 0709.3686; 24]. In this way, the result for Bernstein type theorem done by Jost and the first author could be improved.

Abstract:We prove that local weak solutions of the orthotropic $p-$harmonic equation are locally Lipschitz, for every $p\ge 2$ and in every dimension. More generally, the result holds true for more degenerate equations with orthotropic structure, with right-hand sides in suitable Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:Lawson and Osserman proved that the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system is not always solvable in the class of Lipschitz maps. However, it is known that minimizing sequences (for area) of Lipschitz graphs converge to objects called Cartesian currents. Essentially nothing is known about these limits. We show that such limits can have surprisingly large interior vertical and non-minimal portions. This demonstrates a striking discrepancy between the parametric and non-parametric area minimization problems in higher codimension. Moreover, our construction has the smallest possible dimension ($n = 3$) and codimension $(m = 2)$.

On Lawson-Osserman Constructions

Abstract: Lawson-Osserman constructed three types of non-parametric minimal cones of high codimensions based on Hopf maps between spheres, which correspond to Lipschitz but non-differentiable solutions to the minimal surface equations, thereby making sharp contrast to the regularity theorem for minimal graphs of codimension 1. In this paper, we develop the constructions in a more general scheme. Once a mapping f between unit spheres is composited of a harmonic Riemannian submersion and a homothetic (i.e., up to a constant factor, isometric) minimal immersion, certain twisted graph of f can yield a non-parametric minimal cone. Because the choices of the second component usually form a huge moduli space, our constructions produce a constellation of uncountably many examples. For each such cone, there exists an entire minimal graph whose tangent cone at infinity is just the given one. Moreover, new phenomena on the existence, non-uniqueness and non-minimizing of solutions to the related Dirichlet problem are discovered.

Abstract:We obtain the instability of Type (II) Lawson-Osserman cones in Euclidean spaces, and thus provide a family of (uncountably many) unstable solutions with singularity to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs of high codimension versus smooth unstable ones by Lawson-Osserman through a min-max technique. To our knowledge, these are the first examples of non-smooth unstable minimal graphs and unlikely detectible through the mean curvature flow or min-max theory.

Abstract:For any $M, n \geq 2$ and any open set $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ we find a smooth, strongly polyconvex function $F\colon \mathbb{R}^{M\times n}\to \mathbb{R}$ and a Lipschitz map $u\colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^M$ that is a weak local minimizer of the energy \[ \int_{\Omega} F(Du). \] but with nowhere continuous partial derivatives. This extends celebrated results by Müller-Sverák and Székelyhidi to higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove metric analogues, in any dimension and in any co-dimension, of the famous Theorem of Mumford on smoothness of normal surfaces and the beautiful Theorem of Ramanujam that gives a topological characterization of $\mathbb{C}^2$ as an algebraic surface. For instance, we prove that a complex analytic set that is log-Lipschitz regular at 0 (i.e., a complex analytic set that has a neighbourhood of the origin which bi-log-Lipschitz homeomorphic to an Euclidean ball) must be smooth at 0. We prove even more, we prove that if a complex analytic set $X$ such that, for each $0<\alpha<1$, $(X,0)$ and $(\mathbb{R}^k,0)$ are bi-$\alpha$-Hölder homeomorphic, then $X$ must be smooth at 0. These results generalize the Lipschitz Regularity Theorem, which says that a Lipschitz regular complex analytic set must be smooth. Global versions of these results are also presented here and, in particular, we obtain a characterization of an affine linear subspace as a pure-dimensional entire complex analytic set.

Abstract:We study local regularity properties of local minimizer of scalar integral functionals with controlled $(p,q)$-growth in the two-dimensional plane. We establish Lipschitz continuity for local minimizer under the condition $1<p\leq q<\infty$ with $q<3p$ which improve upon the classical results valid in the regime $q<2p$. Along the way, we establish an $L^\infty$-$L^2$-estimate for solutions of linear uniformly elliptic equations in the plane which is optimal with respect to the ellipticity contrast of the coefficients.

Abstract:It has been 40 years since Lawson and Osserman introduced the three minimal cones associated with Dirichlet problems in their 1977 Acta paper [LO77]. The first cone was shown area-minimizing by Harvey and Lawson in the celebrated paper [HL82]. In this paper, we confirm that the other two are also area-minimizing. In fact, we show that every Lawson-Osserman cone of type (n, p, 2) constructed in [XYZ] is area-minimizing.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n on which rational and homological equivalence coincide for algebraic p-cycles in the range 0\leq p\leq s. We show that the homologically trivial sector of rational Lawson homology L_pH_k(X,Q)_{hom} vanishes for 0\leq n-p\leq s+2. This is an analogue of a theorem of C. Peters in "dual dimensions". Together with Peters' theorem we get that the natural transformation L_pH_k(X,Q)--> H_k(X,Q) is injective for all p and k when X is a smooth projective variety of dimension 4 and Ch_0(X) =Z.

Abstract:We use a recent result of C. Lange to obtain a converse to a theorem of B. Bowditch in dimension at most $4$. In particular, we show that, for $n \leq 4$, a polyhedral $n$-manifold $X$ with bounded geometry is $K$-bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a Riemannian manifold $M$. We bound the constant $K$, the curvature, and the injectivity radius of $M$ by the bounds on the geometry of $X$.

Abstract:In this note we obtain the surjectivity of smooth maps into Euclidean spaces under mild conditions. As application we give a new proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. We also observe that any $C^1$-map from a compact manifold into Euclidean space with dimension $n\ge2$ has infinitely many critical points.

Abstract:We review a recent new approach to the study of critical points of Laplacian eigenfunctions. Its core novelty is a non-standard variational principle for the eigenvalues of the Laplacians with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded, simply connected planar domains. This principle can be used to provide simple proofs of some previously known results on the hot spots conjecture.

Abstract:Given a bounded open connected set Ω ⊂ R 2 with Lipschitz boundary, we consider the class of piecewise constant maps u taking three fixed values α , β , γ ∈ R 2 , vertices of an equilateral triangle; for any u in this class, using a weak notion of Jacobian determinant valid for BV functions, we give a precise description of Det ⁡ ( ∇ ⁡ u ) and show that the relaxed graph area of u is bounded from above by a quantity related to the flat norm of Det ⁡ ( ∇ ⁡ u ) . The provided upper bound allows to show the validity of a De Giorgi conjecture regarding the relaxed area functional when one restricts to this class of piecewise constant functions.

Abstract:Let dimensions $d \ge 3$ and codimensions $c \ge 3$ be positive integers, and define the exceptional set $E = \{3, 4\}$. We prove that, for $d \notin E$ with arbitrary $c$, or for $d \in E$ with $c \le d$, for any $d$-dimensional integral homology class $[\Sigma]$ on a compact (not necessarily orientable) $(d+c)$-dimensional smooth manifold $M$, there exist open sets $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$ in the space of smooth Riemannian metrics such that all area-minimizing integral currents in $[\Sigma]$ are singular for metrics in $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$. This resolves a conjecture by White regarding the generic regularity of area-minimizing surfaces and provides a sharp dimension-wise answer. As a corollary, we determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents in the vicinity of any area-minimizing transverse immersion with dimension $d \ge 3$ and codimension $c \ge 3$ that satisfies an angle condition of asymptotically sharp order in $d$. Analogous conclusions apply to mod $2$ area-minimizing surfaces.

A Variational Theory for The Area of Legendrian Surfaces

Abstract:We study a new notion of critical point for the area of surfaces under the Legendrian constraint, called parametrized Hamiltonian stationary Legendrian varifolds (PHSLVs). We establish several fundamental properties of these objects, including their sequential compactness and an optimal regularity result, showing that they are smooth immersions away from a locally finite set of branch points and Schoen Wolfson conical singularities. This generalizes in particular the regularity theory of Schoen Wolfson for minimizers to general critical points. This theory can be used to show two new variational results: every minmax operation with the area of (closed, immersed) Legendrian surfaces in a closed Sasakian 5-dimensional manifold is achieved by a Hamiltonian stationary map with this regularity; also, the minimal area in any given exact isotopy class of Legendrian immersions of $S^2$ is realized by such a map. Along the way, we prove an effective monotonicity formula for general two-dimensional stationary varifolds in the Legendrian setting, as well as the closure of integral stationary varifolds among rectifiable ones, in spite of the lack of compactness of the latter.
