Abstract:This article is based on a talk at the RIEMain in Contact conference in Cagliari, Italy in honor of the 78th birthday of David Blair one of the founders of modern Riemannian contact geometry. The present article is a survey of a special type of Riemannian contact structure known as Sasakian geometry. An ultimate goal of this survey is to understand the moduli of classes of Sasakian structures as well as the moduli of extremal and constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, and in particular the moduli of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:The subject of geometric analysis evolves according to our understanding of geometry and analysis. However, one should say that ideas of algebraic geometry and representation theory have been extremely powerful in both global and local geometry. In fact, the spectacular idea of using geometry to understand Diophantine problem has already widened our concept of space. The desire to find suitable geometry to accommodate unified field theory in physics would certainly drastically change the scope of geometry in the near future. In the following lectures, we shall focus on an important branch of geometric analysis: the construction of geometric structures over a given topological space.

Abstract:Geographic objects usually change their locations, shape and characteristics over time. Change in one object can trigger a series of changes in the adjacent objects and their topological relationships. The spatio-temporal topological relations analysis of geographic objects is an important issue in the development of a more temporally aware geographical information science. Research on, and applications of spatial topology are mature, yet the methods to exploit spatio-temporal topology are still far from the reach of GIS users. Such research has probed the definition of time, and explored the formalization of spatio-temporal topology from different perspectives. However, almost all methods and representations are mathematical or logical methods represented in qualitative ways. Conformal geometric algebra (CGA) is a new tool for unified multidimensional representation and geometric computation, from a unified perspective of multidimensional space-time. In this research, we pursue a logic based on the concept of a unified representational model based on CGA for spatio-temporal objects and their spatio-temporal topological relations formally expressed by a multi-branch decision tree, which is not only qualitative but also quantitative. The research provides theoretical and methodological support for expressing and computing the spatio-temporal topological relations among any set of geographic objects. This ability effectively promotes the expression of spatio-temporal topological relationships and enhances the analytical capabilities of GIS for dealing with both space and time.
Generalized Sasakian Structures from a Poisson Geometry Point of View

Abstract:In this paper we define a canonical Poisson structure on a normal generalized contact metric space and use this structure to define a generalized Sasakian structure. We show also that this canonical Poisson structure enables us to distinguish generalized Sasakian structures from generalized coKähler structures.

Abstract:Kuranishi structures were introduced to symplectic topology by Fukaya and Ono and recently refined by Joyce, in order to extract homological data from compactified moduli spaces of holomorphic maps in cases where geometric regularization approaches such as perturbations of the almost complex structure do not yield a smooth structure on the moduli space. We give a general survey of regularization techniques in symplectic topology, pointing to some general analytic issues, and discussing some specific topological issues of the Kuranishi approach. In the main body of the paper we provide an abstract framework of Kuranishi atlases which separates the analytic and topological issues. Throughout, we focus on the most fundamental issues, which are already present in applying virtual transversality techniques to moduli spaces of holomorphic spheres without nodes or nontrivial isotropy. This is the reinstated 2013 version of this survey and sample construction. A generalized version of the topological theory is now available under 'The topology of Kuranishi atlases' <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1508.01844" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.01844">arXiv:1508.01844</a>, with the survey parts and VMC construction updated in 'The fundamental class of smooth Kuranishi atlases with trivial isotropy' <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1508.01560" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.01560">arXiv:1508.01560</a>.

Reducibility in Sasakian Geometry

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study reducibility properties in Sasakian geometry. First we give the Sasaki version of the de Rham Decomposition Theorem; however, we need a mild technical assumption on the Sasaki automorphism group which includes the toric case. Next we introduce the concept of {\it cone reducible} and consider $S^3$ bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety where we give a classification result concerning contact structures admitting the action of a 2-torus of Reeb type. In particular, we can classify all such Sasakian structures up to contact isotopy on $S^3$ bundles over a Riemann surface of genus greater than zero. Finally, we show that in the toric case an extremal Sasaki metric on a Sasaki join always splits.

Geometry on surfaces, a source for mathematical developments

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. Abstract:We study immersions of Sasakian manifolds into finite and infinite dimensional Sasakian space forms. After proving Calabi's rigidity results in the Sasakian setting, we characterise all homogeneous Sasakian manifolds which admit a (local) Sasakian immersion into a nonelliptic Sasakian space form. Moreover, we give a characterisation of homogeneous Sasakian manifolds which can be embedded into the standard sphere both in the compact and noncompact case.

Abstract:We give a spinorial construction of Sasakian and 3-Sasakian structures in arbitrary dimension, generalizing previously known results in dimensions 5 and 7. Furthermore, we obtain a complete description of the space of invariant spinors on a homogeneous 3-Sasakian space, and show that it is spanned by the Clifford products of invariant differential forms with a certain invariant Killing spinor. Finally, we give a basis for the space of invariant Riemannian Killing spinors on a homogeneous 3-Sasakian space, and determine which of these induce the homogeneous 3-Sasakian structure.

History and Overview

Abstract:This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical geometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a "true" geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Such a basic understanding of the status of geometry around 1870 enables one to study the geometric works of Sophus Lie and Felix Klein at the beginning of their career in the appropriate historical perspective.
Sasakian Geometry on Sphere Bundles II: Constant Scalar Curvature

Abstract:In a previous paper [BTF21] the authors employed the fiber join construction of Yamazaki [Yam99] together with the admissible construction of Apostolov, Calderbank, Gauduchon, and Tønnesen-Friedman [ACGTF08a] to construct new extremal Sasaki metrics on odd dimensional sphere bundles over smooth projective algebraic varieties. In the present paper we continue this study by applying a recent existence theorem [BHLTF23] that shows that under certain conditions one can always obtain a constant scalar curvature Sasaki metric in the Sasaki cone. Moreover, we explicitly describe this construction for certain sphere bundles of dimension 5 and 7.

Complex structures on the product of two Sasakian manifolds

Abstract:A Sasakian manifold is a Riemannian manifold whose metric cone admits a certain Kähler structure which behaves well under homotheties. We show that the product of two compact Sasakian manifolds admits a family of complex structures indexed by a complex nonreal parameter, none of whose members admits any compatible locally conformally Kähler metrics if both Sasakian manifolds are of dimension greater than $1$. We compare this family with another family of complex structures which has been studied in the literature. We compute the Dolbeault cohomology groups of these products of compact Sasakian manifolds.

Abstract:In previous work (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.12067" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.12067">arXiv:2205.12067</a>), we defined a notion of a generalized Sasakian structure in the context of generalized contact geometry, the odd dimensional analogue of generalized complex geometry introduced by Hitchin and Gualtieri. We show here that k-contact manifolds are generalized Sasakian if and only if they are classically Sasakian. We show also that strictly pseudo-convex CR manifolds are always generalized Sasakian.

Abstract:Of the Thurston geometries, those with constant curvature geometries (Euclidean $\EUC$, hyperbolic $\HYP$, spherical $\SPH$) have been extensively studied, but the other five geometries, $\HXR$, $\SXR$, $\NIL$, $\SLR$, $\SOL$ have been thoroughly studied only from a differential geometry and topological point of view. However, classical concepts highlighting the beauty and underlying structure of these -- such as geodesic curves and spheres, the lattices, the geodesic triangles and their surfaces, their interior sum of angles and similar statements to those known in constant curvature geometries can be formulated. These have not been the focus of attention. In this survey, we summarize our results on this topic and pose additional open questions.
