Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that if a compact $n$-dimensional vacuum static space $(M^n, g, f)$ admits a non-trivial closed conformal vector field $V$, then $(M, g)$ is isometric to a standard sphere ${\Bbb S}^n(c)$. We also prove that if a pair $(g, f)$ of a Riemannian metric and a function defined on a compact $n$-dimensional manifold $M^n$ satisfies the critical point equation and $(M, g)$ admits a non-trivial closed conformal vector field $V$, we have the same result. Finally, we prove a criterion for a nontrivial conformal vector field to be closed.

All Vacuum Near-Horizon Geometries in $D$-dimensions with $(D-3)$ Commuting Rotational Symmetries

Abstract:We explicitly construct all stationary, non-static, extremal near horizon geometries in $D$ dimensions that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations, and that have $D-3$ commuting rotational symmetries. Our work generalizes [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0806.2051" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0806.2051">arXiv:0806.2051</a>] by Kunduri and Lucietti, where such a classification had been given in $D=4,5$. But our method is different from theirs and relies on a matrix formulation of the Einstein equations. Unlike their method, this matrix formulation works for any dimension. The metrics that we find come in three families, with horizon topology $S^2 \times T^{D-4}$, or $S^3 \times T^{D-5}$, or quotients thereof. Our metrics depend on two discrete parameters specifying the topology type, as well as $(D-2)(D-3)/2$ continuous parameters. Not all of our metrics in $D \ge 6$ seem to arise as the near horizon limits of known black hole solutions.

Vacuum cosmological spacetimes without CMC Cauchy surfaces

Abstract:In this article, we extend a construction of [6] to obtain a large class of vacuum cosmological spacetimes that do not contain any CMC Cauchy surfaces. The allowed spatial topologies for these examples are of the form $M \# M$, where $M$ is any closed, oriented, irreducible $3$-manifold which is not spherical. This complements the recent results of [19], where, instead of initial data methods, global spacetime gluing arguments were used. The study of such examples is sure to yield insight into Bartnik's cosmological splitting conjecture [1].

Abstract:The paper studies the geometric and topological properties of a complete noncompact Riemannian three-dimensional manifold with nonegative Ricct curvature. By comparing the volume growth order of the manifold itself to that of its universal covering space, the paper proves that every three-dimensional with nonnegative Ricci curvature and (1+δ)-order volume growth in strict sense must be contractible provided that its universal covering is finite.
Spatially homogeneous solutions of vacuum Einstein equations in general dimensions

Abstract:We study time-dependent compactification of extra dimensions. We assume that the spacetime is spatially homogeneous, and solve the vacuum Einstein equations without cosmological constant in more than three dimensions. We consider globally hyperbolic spacetimes in which almost abelian Lie groups act on the spaces isometrically and simply transitively. We give left-invariant metrics on the spaces and solve Ricci-flat conditions of the spacetimes. In the four-dimensional case, our solutions correspond to the Bianchi type II solution. By our results and previous studies, all spatially homogeneous solutions whose spaces have zero-dimensional moduli spaces of left-invariant metrics are found. For the simplest solution, we show that each of the spatial dimensions cannot expand or contract simultaneously in the late-time limit.

Abstract:International Journal of Mathematics, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be an [math]-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with constant normalized scalar curvature [math] in the space form [math]. Denote by [math] and [math] the mean curvature and the Ricci curvature of [math] respectively. By applying Cheng-Yau's self-adjoint operator, we first prove that if [math] is a hypersurface in a unit sphere, and [math], then [math] is totally umbilical. Furthermore, we investigate the submanifolds in [math] with flat normal bundle satisfying [math], and obtain a complete classification theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a Riccati-type equation applicable to (sub-)static Einstein spaces and examine its various applications. Specifically, within the framework of conformally compactifiable manifolds, we prove a splitting theorem for the Riemannian universal covering. Furthermore, we demonstrate two distinct methods by which the Riccati equation can establish the connectivity of the conformal boundary under the static Einstein equation. Additionally, for compact static triples possessing positive scalar curvature, we establish the compactness of the universal covering.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of static regular of type (I) and type (II) and show that they are sufficient conditions for local well-posedness of solving asymptotically flat, static vacuum metrics with prescribed Bartnik boundary data. We then show that hypersurfaces in a very general open and dense family of hypersurfaces are static regular of type (II). As applications, we confirm Bartnik's static vacuum extension conjecture for a large class of Bartnik boundary data, including those that can be far from Euclidean and have large ADM masses, and give many new examples of static vacuum metrics with intriguing geometry.

Complete Spacelike Stationary Surfaces in $\Mathbb{r}^4_1$

Abstract:For spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space one can naturally introduce two Gauss maps and Weierstrass representation. In this paper we investigate their global geometry systematically. The total Gaussian curvature is related with the surface topology as well as the indices of the so-called good singular ends by a generalized Jorge-Meeks formula. On the other hand, as shown by a family of counter-examples to Osserman's theorem, finite total curvature no longer implies that Gauss maps extend to the ends. Interesting examples include the generalization of the classical catenoids, helicoids, the Enneper surface, and Jorge-Meeks' k-noids. Any of them could be embedded in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space, showing a sharp contrast with the case of 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

Abstract:In this work we characterize all the static and spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in $f(R)$ gravity when the principal null directions of the Weyl tensor are non-expanding. In contrast to General Relativity, we show that the Nariai spacetime is not the only solution of this type when general $f(R)$ theories are considered. In particular, we find four different solutions for the non-constant Ricci scalar case, all of them corresponding to the same theory, given by $f(R) = r_0^{-1}\left\lvert R-3/r_0^2\right\rvert^{1/2}$, where $r_0$ is a non-null constant. Finally, we briefly present some geometric properties of these solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the rigidity of Q-curvature. Specifically, we consider a closed, oriented $n$-dimensional ($n\geq6$) Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and prove the following results under the condition $\int_{M} \nabla R\cdot\nabla \mathrm{Q}\mathrm{d} V_g\leq0$. (1) If $(M,g)$ is locally conformally flat with nonnegative Ricci curvature, then $(M,g)$ is isometric to a quotient of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $\mathbb{S}^n$, or $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$. (2) If $(M,g)$ has $\delta^2 W=0$ with nonnegative sectional curvature, then $(M,g)$ is isometric to a quotient of the product of Einstein manifolds. Additionally, we investigate some rigidity theorems involving Q-curvature about hypersurfaces in simply-connected space forms. We also show the uniqueness of metrics with constant scalar curvature and constant Q-curvature in a fixed conformal class.

Abstract:Wu and Sprung (Phys. Rev. E 48, 2595 (1993)) reproduced the first 500 nontrivial Riemann zeros, using a one-dimensional local potential model. They concluded -- and similarly van Zyl and Hutchinson (Phys. Rev. E 67, 066211 (2003)) -- that the potential possesses a fractal structure of dimension d=3/2. We model the nonsmooth fluctuating part of the potential by the alternating-sign sine series fractal of Berry and Lewis A(x,g). Setting d=3/2, we estimate the frequency parameter (gamma), plus an overall scaling parameter (sigma) we introduce. We search for that pair of parameters (gamma,sigma) which minimizes the least-squares fit S_{n}(gamma,sigma) of the lowest n eigenvalues -- obtained by solving the one-dimensional stationary (non-fractal) Schrodinger equation with the trial potential (smooth plus nonsmooth parts) -- to the lowest n Riemann zeros for n =25. For the additional cases we study, n=50 and 75, we simply set sigma=1. The fits obtained are compared to those gotten by using just the smooth part of the Wu-Sprung potential without any fractal supplementation. Some limited improvement -- 5.7261 vs. 6.39207 (n=25), 11.2672 vs. 11.7002 (n=50) and 16.3119 vs. 16.6809 (n=75) -- is found in our (non-optimized, computationally-bound) search procedures. The improvements are relatively strong in the vicinities of gamma=3 and (its square) 9. Further, we extend the Wu-Sprung semiclassical framework to include higher-order corrections from the Riemann-von Mangoldt formula (beyond the leading, dominant term) into the smooth potential.

It is proved that M is isometric to a hyperbolic cylinder or an Euclidean space if H ≥ 1. When 2 n-1/n ＜ H ＜ 1, there exists a complete rotation hypersurfaces which is not a hyperbolic cylinder.

Abstract:In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurfaces in a hyperbolic space $H^{n+1}(-1)$ of constant curvature $-1$. We prove that a $3$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in $H^{4}(-1)$ satisfies $S\leq \frac{21}{29}$ by making use of the Generalized Maximum Principle, where $S$ denotes the squared norm of the second fundamental form of the hypersurface.

Abstract:In this work, characterizations of vacuum solutions of f(R)-gravity are established in a space-time whose Z tensor is of Codazzi type. We prove that the associated covector of a (PZS)_{n} space-time is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor, with an eigenvalue equals zero. Additionally, it satisfies compatibility conditions with both the Riemann and Weyl tensors. It is proved that a (PZS)_{n} space-time satisfying f(R)-gravity vacuum solutions is a generalized Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time. If n=4, it becomes a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time.
