Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Then there exists a constant δ(n, p) 2 (0, 1) such that if the sectional curvature of N satisfies $${\overline K _N} \in \;\,\left[ {\delta \left( {n,p} \right),\;1} \right]$$, and if M has a lower bound for Ricci curvature and an upper bound for scalar curvature, then N is isometric to Sn+p. Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional submanifold in the simply connected space form F n+p (c) with c + H 2 > 0, where H is the mean curvature of M. We verify that if M n (n ≥ 3) is an oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature and its Ricci curvature satisfies Ric M ≥ (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is either a totally umbilic sphere, a Clifford hypersurface in an (n + 1)-sphere with n = even, or ${\mathbb{C}P^{2} \left(\frac{4}{3}(c + H^{2})\right) {\rm in} S^{7} \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c + H^{2}}}\right)}$. In particular, if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is a totally umbilic sphere. We then prove that if M n (n ≥ 4) is a compact submanifold in F n+p (c) with c ≥ 0, and if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is homeomorphic to a sphere. It should be emphasized that our pinching conditions above are sharp. Finally, we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds with positive Ricci curvature.
On Real Kähler Euclidean Submanifolds with Non-Negative Ricci Curvature

Abstract:We show that any real Kahler Euclidean submanifold f : M-2n --> R2n+p with either non-negative Ricci curvature or non-negative holomorphic sectional curvature has index of relative nullity greater than or equal to 2n - 2p. Moreover, if equality holds everywhere, then the submanifold must be a product of Euclidean hypersurfaces almost everywhere, and the splitting is global provided that M-2n is complete. In particular, we conclude that the only real Kahler submanifolds M-2n in R-3n that have either positive Ricci curvature or positive holomorphic sectional curvature are products of n orientable surfaces in R-3 with positive Gaussian curvature. Further applications of our main result are also given.

Abstract:Using an analogue of Myers' theorem for minimal surfaces and three dimensional topology, we prove the diameter sphere theorem for Ricci curvature in dimension three and a corresponding eigenvalue pinching theorem. This settles these two open problems for closed 3 manifolds with positive Ricci curvature since they are both false in dimensions greater than three.

Abstract:We investigate the differentiable pinching problem for compact immersed submanifolds of positive k-th Ricci curvature, and prove that if M n is simply connected and the k-th Ricci curvature of M n is bounded below by a quantity involving the mean curvature of M n and the curvature of the ambient manifold, then M n is diffeomorphic to the standard sphere ${\mathbb{S}^n}$. For the case where the ambient manifold is a space form with nonnegative constant curvature, we prove a differentiable sphere theorem without the assumption that the submanifold M n is simply connected. Motivated by a geometric rigidity theorem due to S. T. Yau and U. Simon, we prove a topological rigidity theorem for submanifolds in a space form.

Abstract:Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if $M^n$ is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition $R_0>\sigma_{n}K_{\max}$, where $\sigma_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. This gives a partial answer to Yau's conjecture on pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if $M^n(n\geq3)$ is a compact manifold whose $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition $Ric^{(n-2)}_{\min}>\tau_n(n-2)R_0,$ where $\tau_n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker and the authors.

Abstract:We show that an orientable 3-dimensional manifold M admits a complete riemannian metric of bounded geometry and uniformly pos- itive scalar curvature if and only if there exists a finite collection F of spherical space-forms such that M is a (possibly infinite) connected sum where each summand is diffeomorphic to S2xS1 or to some mem- ber of F. This result generalises G. Perelman's classification theorem for compact 3-manifolds of positive scalar curvature. The main tool is a variant of Perelman's surgery construction for Ricci flow.

Abstract:For compact submanifolds in Euclidean and Spherical space forms with Ricci curvature bounded below by a function $\alpha(n,k,H,c)$ of mean curvature, we prove that the submanifold is either isometric to the Einstein Clifford torus, or a topological sphere for the maximal bound $\alpha(n,[\frac{n}{2}],H,c)$, or has up to $k$-th homology groups vanishing. This gives an almost complete (except for the differentiable sphere theorem) characterization of compact submanifolds with pinched Ricci curvature, generalizing celebrated rigidity results obtained by Ejiri, Xu-Tian, Xu-Gu, Xu-Leng-Gu, Vlachos, Dajczer-Vlachos.

Abstract:A consequence of the surgery theorem of Gromov and Lawson is that every closed, simply-connected 6-manifold admits a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature. For metrics of positive Ricci curvature it is widely open whether a similar result holds; there are no obstructions known for those manifolds to admit a metric of positive Ricci curvature, while the number of examples known is limited. In this article we introduce a new description of certain $6k$-dimensional manifolds via labeled bipartite graphs and use an earlier result of the author to construct metrics of positive Ricci curvature on these manifolds. In this way we obtain many new examples, both spin and non-spin, of $6k$-dimensional manifolds with a metric of positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:In Riemannian geometry, the Cheng's maximal diameter rigidity theorem says that if a complete $n$-manifold $M$ of Ricci curvature, $\operatorname{Ric}_M\ge (n-1)$, has the maximal diameter $\pi$, then $M$ is isometric to the unit sphere $S^n_1$. The main result in this paper is a quantitative maximal diameter rigidity: if $M$ satisfies that $\operatorname{Ric}_M\ge n-1$, $\operatorname{diam}(M)\approx \pi$, and the Riemannian universal cover of every metric ball in $M$ of a definite radius satisfies a Riefenberg condition, then $M$ is diffeomorphic and bi-Hölder close to $S^n_1$.

Fractal fits to Riemann zeros

Abstract:Wu and Sprung (Phys. Rev. E 48, 2595 (1993)) reproduced the first 500 nontrivial Riemann zeros, using a one-dimensional local potential model. They concluded -- and similarly van Zyl and Hutchinson (Phys. Rev. E 67, 066211 (2003)) -- that the potential possesses a fractal structure of dimension d=3/2. We model the nonsmooth fluctuating part of the potential by the alternating-sign sine series fractal of Berry and Lewis A(x,g). Setting d=3/2, we estimate the frequency parameter (gamma), plus an overall scaling parameter (sigma) we introduce. We search for that pair of parameters (gamma,sigma) which minimizes the least-squares fit S_{n}(gamma,sigma) of the lowest n eigenvalues -- obtained by solving the one-dimensional stationary (non-fractal) Schrodinger equation with the trial potential (smooth plus nonsmooth parts) -- to the lowest n Riemann zeros for n =25. For the additional cases we study, n=50 and 75, we simply set sigma=1. The fits obtained are compared to those gotten by using just the smooth part of the Wu-Sprung potential without any fractal supplementation. Some limited improvement -- 5.7261 vs. 6.39207 (n=25), 11.2672 vs. 11.7002 (n=50) and 16.3119 vs. 16.6809 (n=75) -- is found in our (non-optimized, computationally-bound) search procedures. The improvements are relatively strong in the vicinities of gamma=3 and (its square) 9. Further, we extend the Wu-Sprung semiclassical framework to include higher-order corrections from the Riemann-von Mangoldt formula (beyond the leading, dominant term) into the smooth potential.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that if the Ricci tensor of a compact nonpositively curved manifold M n is nowhere negative definite, then it admits local flat factors. To be more precise, let U C M be the open subset where the Ricci tensor has maximum rank r. Then for any connected component U a of U, its universal cover U a is isometric to R n―r ×N r a , where n r a is a nonpositively curved manifold with negative Ricci curvature. In particular, if M n is compact, nonpositively curved without Euclidean de Rham factor, and both the manifold and the metric are real analytic, then its Ricci tensor must be negative definite somewhere.

Abstract:We prove that if $M^n(n\ge 4)$ is a compact Einstein manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy pinching condition $R_0>\sigma _{n}K_{\max }$, where $\sigma _n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant depending only on $n$, then $M$ must be isometric to a spherical space form. Moreover, we prove that if an $n(\ge {\!\!4})$-dimensional compact Einstein manifold satisfies $K_{\min }\ge \eta _n R_0,$ where $\eta _n\in (\frac{1}{4},1)$ is an explicit positive constant, then $M$ is locally symmetric. It should be emphasized that the pinching constant $\eta _n$ is optimal when $n$ is even. We then obtain some rigidity theorems for Einstein manifolds under $(n-2)$-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature pinching conditions. Finally we extend the theorems above to Einstein submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold, and prove that if $M$ is an $n(\ge {\!\!4})$-dimensional compact Einstein submanifold in the simply connected space form $F^{N}(c)$ with constant curvature $c\ge 0$, and the normalized scalar curvature $R_0$ of $M$ satisfies $R_0>\frac{A_n}{A_n+4n-8}(c+H^2),$ where $A_n=n^3-5n^2+8n$, and $H$ is the mean curvature of $M$, then $M$ is isometric to a standard $n$-sphere.
