Abstract:We prove a Lipschitz approximation with superlinear error terms for integral currents $\omega$-minimizing the area functional, where $\omega$ is a modulus of continuity satisfying a Dini condition. We also present an almost monotonicity result for the density of these general almost area minimzing currents.

Abstract:In the present work, we consider area minimizing currents in the general setting of arbitrary codimension and arbitrary boundary multiplicity. We study the boundary regularity of 2d area minimizing currents, beyond that, several results are stated in the more general context of $(C_0, \alpha_0, r_0)$-almost area minimizing currents of arbitrary dimension $m$ and arbitrary codimension taking the boundary with arbitrary multiplicity. Furthermore, we do not consider any type of convex barrier assumption on the boundary, in our main regularity result which states that the regular set, which includes one-sided and two-sided points, of any 2d area minimizing current $T$ is an open dense set in the boundary.

Abstract:The main goal of this work is to prove an instance of the unique continuation principle for area minimizing integral currents. More precisely, consider an $m$-dimensional area minimizing integral current and an $m$-dimensional minimal surface, both contained in $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$ with $n\geq 1$. We show that if, in an integral sense, the current has infinite order of contact with the minimal surface at a point, then the current and the minimal surface coincide in a neighborhood of that point.

Abstract:This is an announcement of a series of upcoming works on boundary regularity for area minimizing currents, one of which is in collaboration with Reinaldo Resende. The setting we consider is that of an area minimizing current with a smooth boundary taken with arbitrary multiplicity. The main result is a generalization of Allard's boundary regularity theorem from which we derive important structural consequences.

Flat interior singularities for area almost-minimizing currents

Abstract:The interior regularity of area-minimizing integral currents and semi-calibrated currents has been studied extensively in recent decades, with sharp dimension estimates established on their interior singular sets in any dimension and codimension. In stark contrast, the best result in this direction for general almost-minimizing integral currents is due to Bombieri in the 1980s, and demonstrates that the interior regular set is dense. The main results of this article show the sharpness of Bombieri's result by constructing two families of examples of area almost-minimizing integral currents whose flat singular sets contain any closed, empty interior subset $K$ of an $m$-dimensional plane in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$. The first family of examples are codimension one currents induced by a superposition of $C^{k,\alpha_*}$ graphs with $K$ contained in the boundary of their zero set. The second family of examples are two dimensional area almost-minimizing integral currents in $\mathbb{R}^4$ whose set of branching singularities contains $K$.

Abstract:In this work we establish the optimal Lipschitz regularity for non-negative almost minimizers of the one-phase Bernoulli-type functional where is a bounded domain and is a Young function with satisfying the Lieberman's classical conditions. Moreover, of independent mathematical interest, we also address a Höder regularity characterization via Campanato-type estimates in the context of Orlicz modulars, which is new for such a class of non-standard growth functionals.

Abstract:We provide a novel approach to approximate bounded Lipschitz domains via a sequence of smooth, bounded domains. The flexibility of our method allows either inner or outer approximations of Lipschitz domains which also possess weakly defined curvatures, namely, domains whose boundary can be locally described as the graph of a function belonging to the Sobolev space $W^{2,q}$ for some $q\geq 1$. The sequences of approximating sets is also characterized by uniform isocapacitary estimates with respect to the initial domain $\Omega$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an area-minimizing integral $m$-current $T$, within a submanifold $\Sigma \in C^{3,\kappa}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$, with arbitrary boundary multiplicity $\partial T = Q[\![\Gamma]\!]$, where $\Gamma\subset\Sigma$ of class $C^{3,\kappa}$. We prove that the set of density $Q/2$ boundary singular points of $T$ is $\mathcal{H}^{m-3}$-rectifiable. This result generalizes Allard's boundary regularity theorem to a higher multiplicity setting. In particular, if $\Gamma$ is a closed manifold which lies at the boundary of a uniformly convex set $\Omega$ and $\Sigma=\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$ the whole boundary singular set is $\mathcal{H}^{m-3}$ -rectifiable. As a structural consequence of our regularity theory, we show that the boundary regular set, without any assumptions on the density, is open and dense in $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Given an open subset $\Omega$ of a Banach space and a Lipschitz function $u_0: \overline{\Omega} \to \mathbb{R},$ we study whether it is possible to approximate $u_0$ uniformly on $\Omega$ by $C^k$-smooth Lipschitz functions which coincide with $u_0$ on the boundary $\partial \Omega$ of $\Omega$ and have the same Lipschitz constant as $u_0.$ As a consequence, we show that every $1$-Lipschitz function $u_0: \overline{\Omega} \to \mathbb{R},$ defined on the closure $\overline{\Omega}$ of an open subset $\Omega$ of a finite dimensional normed space of dimension $n \geq 2$, and such that the Lipschitz constant of the restriction of $u_0$ to the boundary of $\Omega$ is less than $1$, can be uniformly approximated by differentiable $1$-Lipschitz functions $w$ which coincide with $u_0$ on $\partial \Omega$ and satisfy the equation $\| D w\|_* =1$ almost everywhere on $\Omega.$ This result does not hold in general without assumption on the restriction of $u_0$ to the boundary of $\Omega$.

Abstract:Given an area-minimizing integral $m$-current in $\Sigma$, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the interior singular set of $T$ cannot exceed $m-2$, provided that $\Sigma$ is an embedded $(m+\bar{n})$-submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$ of class $C^{2,\alpha}$, where $\alpha>0$. This result establishes the complete counterpart, in the arbitrary codimension setting, of the interior regularity theory for area-minimizing integral hypercurrents within a Riemannian manifold of class $C^{2,\alpha}$.

Abstract:We consider almost minimizers to the one-phase energy functional and we prove their optimal Lipschitz regularity and partial regularity of their free boundary. These results were recently obtained by David and Toro, and David, Engelstein, and Toro. Our proofs provide a different method based on a non-infinitesimal notion of viscosity solutions.

Abstract:For a given constant $\lambda > 0$ and a bounded Lipschitz domain $D \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 2$), we establish that almost-minimizers of the functional $$ J(\mathbf{v}; D) = \int_D \sum_{i=1}^{m} \left|\nabla v_i(x) \right|^p+ \lambda \chi_{\{\left|\mathbf{v} \right|>0\}} (x) \, dx, \qquad 1<p<\infty, $$ where $\mathbf{v} = (v_1, \cdots, v_m)$, and $m \in \mathbb{N}$, exhibit optimal Lipschitz continuity in compact sets of $D$. Furthermore, assuming $p \geq 2$ and employing a distinctly different methodology, we tackle the issue of boundary Lipschitz regularity for $v$. This approach simultaneously yields alternative proof for the optimal local Lipschitz regularity for the interior case.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent model for elasto-plastic evolutions that are driven by the flow of dislocations, this work develops a theory of space-time integral currents with bounded variation in time, which enables a natural variational approach to the analysis of rate-independent geometric evolutions. Based on this, we further introduce the notion of Lipschitz deformation distance between integral currents, which arises physically as a (simplified) dissipation distance. Several results are obtained: A Helly-type compactness theorem, a deformation theorem, an isoperimetric inequality, and the equivalence of the convergence in deformation distance with the classical notion of weak* (or flat) convergence. Finally, we prove that the Lipschitz deformation distance agrees with the (integral) homogeneous Whitney flat metric for boundaryless currents. Physically, this means that two seemingly different ways to measure the dissipation actually coincide.

This class of integrands inculdes the standard singular/degenerate functions $F(z)=|z|^p$ for any $p>1$ and arises naturally as the closure, with respect to a natural convergence, of the strongly elliptic integrands of the Calculus of Variations.

Abstract:Livšic theorem for flows asserts that a Lipschitz observable that has zero mean average along every periodic orbit is necessarily a coboundary, that is the Lie derivative of a Lipschitz function smooth along the flow direction. The positive Livšic theorem bounds from below the observable by such a coboundary as soon as the mean average along every periodic orbit is non negative. Previous proofs give a Hölder coboundary. Assuming that the dynamics is given by a locally maximal hyperbolic flow, we show that the coboundary can be Lipschitz. We introduce a new tool: the Lax-Oleinik semigroup, inspired by Fathi's weak KAM theory.

Abstract:We propose a monotone discretization for the integral fractional Laplace equation on bounded Lipschitz domains with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The method is inspired by a quadrature-based finite difference method of Huang and Oberman, but is defined on unstructured grids in arbitrary dimensions with a more flexible domain for approximating singular integrals. The scale of the singular integral domain not only depends on the local grid size, but also on the distance to the boundary, since the Ho center dot lder coefficient of the solution deteriorates as it approaches the boundary. By using a discrete barrier function that also reflects the distance to the boundary, we show optimal pointwise convergence rates in terms of the Ho center dot lder regularity of the data on both quasi-uniform and graded grids. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the sharpness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:We study vector-valued functions that minimise the $L^\infty$-norm of their derivatives for prescribed boundary data. We construct a vector-valued, mass minimising $1$-current (i.e., a generalised geodesic) in the domain such that all solutions of the problem coincide on its support. Furthermore, this current can be interpreted as a streamline of the solutions. It also has maximal support among all $1$-currents with certain properties.

Abstract:We prove a Lipschitz extension lemma in which the extension procedure simultaneously preserves the Lipschitz continuity for two non-equivalent distances. The two distances under consideration are the Euclidean distance and, roughly speaking, the geodesic distance along integral curves of a (possibly multi-valued) flow of a continuous vector field. The Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the extension can be estimated in terms of the Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the original function. This Lipschitz extension lemma allows us to remove the high integrability assumption on the solution needed for the uniqueness within the DiPerna-Lions theory of continuity equations in the case of vector fields in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$, where $p$ is larger than the space dimension, under the assumption that the so-called "forward-backward integral curves" associated to the vector field are trivial for almost every starting point. More precisely, for such vector fields we prove uniqueness and Lagrangianity for weak solutions of the continuity equation that are just locally integrable.

Abstract:We study local regularity properties of local minimizer of scalar integral functionals with controlled $(p,q)$-growth in the two-dimensional plane. We establish Lipschitz continuity for local minimizer under the condition $1<p\leq q<\infty$ with $q<3p$ which improve upon the classical results valid in the regime $q<2p$. Along the way, we establish an $L^\infty$-$L^2$-estimate for solutions of linear uniformly elliptic equations in the plane which is optimal with respect to the ellipticity contrast of the coefficients.
