Abstract:The Chern-Simons perturbation theory gives an invariant $d(M,\rho)$ for a pair of a closed oriented 3-manifold $M$ and a representation $\rho$ of the fundamental group. We generalize $d(M,\rho)$ for compact oriented 3-manifolds with torus boundaries. Further we give a gluing formula for $d(M,\rho)$.

Abstract:In this self-contained book, following Edward Witten, Maxim Kontsevich, Greg Kuperberg and Dylan Thurston, we define an invariant Z of framed links in rational homology 3-spheres, and we study its properties. The invariant Z, which is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory, is valued in a graded space generated by Jacobi diagrams. It counts embeddings of this kind of unitrivalent graphs in the ambient manifold, in a sense that is explained in the book, using integrals over configuration spaces, or, in a dual way, algebraic intersections in the same configuration spaces. When the ambient manifold is the standard 3-sphere, the invariant Z is a universal Vassiliev link invariant studied by many authors including Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Bott and Taubes, Altschüler and Freidel, Thurston and Poirier... This book contains a more flexible definition of this invariant. We extend Z to a functor on a category of framed tangles in rational homology cylinders and we describe the behaviour of this functor under various operations including some cabling operations. We also compute iterated derivatives of our extended invariant with respect to the discrete derivatives associated to the main theories of finite type invariants. Together with recent results of Massuyeau and Moussard, our computations imply that the restriction of Z to rational homology 3-spheres (equipped with empty links) contains the same information as the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki LMO invariant for these manifolds. They also imply that the degree one part of Z is the Casson-Walker invariant.

Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:We prove two tropical gluing formulae for Gromov-Witten invariants of exploded manifolds, useful for calculating Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold using a normal-crossing degeneration. The first formula generalizes the symplectic-sum formula for Gromov-Witten invariants. The second formula is stronger, and also generalizes Kontsevich and Manin's splitting and genus-reduction axioms. Both tropical gluing formulae have versions incorporating gravitational descendants.

A three-manifold invariant from graph configurations

Abstract:The logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant counts embeddings of connected trivalent graphs in an oriented rational homology sphere, using integrals on configuration spaces of points in the given manifold. It is a universal finite type invariant of oriented rational homology spheres. The exponential of this invariant is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory. In this article, we give an independent original definition of the degree two part of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant appropriate for concrete computations. This article can also serve as an introduction to the general definition of the logarithm of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant.

Integral invariants for framed 3-manifolds associated to trivalent graphs possibly with self-loops

Abstract:Bott--Cattaneo's theory defines the integral invariants for a framed rational homology 3-sphere equipped with an acyclic orthogonal local system, in terms of graph cocycles without self-loops. The 2-loop term of their invariants is associated with the theta graph. Their definition requires a cohomological condition. Cattaneo--Shimizu removed this cohomological condition and gave a 2-loop invariant associated with a linear combination of the theta graph and the dumbbell graph, the 2-loop trivalent graph with self-loops. In this paper, we are concerned with an acyclic local system given by the adjoint representation of a semi-simple Lie group composed with a representation of the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifold, and we show that through a cohomological construction eventually the integral associated with the dumbbell graph vanishes. Based on this idea, we construct a theory of graph complexes and cocycles, so that higher-loop invariants can be defined by two different but equivalent methods: the graph cocycles without self-loops as in Bott--Cattaneo's theory, and the ones with self-loops that extend Cattaneo--Shimizu's 2-loop invariants. As a consequence, we prove that the generating series of Chern--Simons perturbation theory gives rise to topological invariants for framed 3-manifolds in our setting, which admits a formula in terms of only trivalent graphs without self-loops.

Abstract:We show a simple relation between Witten–Reshetikhin–Turaev SU(2) invariant and the Hennings invariant associated with the restricted quantum ${{\mathfrak{sl}_{2}}}$ . These invariants are defined in very different methods: the former uses the representation theory of quantum ${{\mathfrak{sl}_{2}}}$ while the latter uses the integral of the Hopf algebra. But they turn out to be the same for most rational homology 3-spheres up to a sign. This relation can be used to prove the integrality of the former invariant.

Abstract:We construct a combinatorial invariant of 3-orbifolds with singular set a link that generalizes the Turaev torsion invariant of 3-manifolds. We give several gluing formulas from which we derive two consequences. The first is an understanding of how the components of the invariant change when we remove a curve from the singular set. The second is a formula relating the invariant of the 3-orbifold to the Turaev torsion invariant of the underlying 3-manifold in the case when the singular set is a nullhomologous knot.

Abstract:We define and invariant of a three manifold equipped with a flat bundle with vanishing homology. The construction is based on Morse theory using several Morse functions simultaneously and is regarded as a higher loop analogue of various product operations in algebraic topology. There is a heuristic argument that this invariant is related to perturbative Chern-Simons Gauge theory by Axelrod-Singer, etc. There is also a theorem which gives a relation of the construction to open string theory on the cotangent bundle.

Abstract:We use recent progress on Chern-Simons gauge theory in three dimensions [18] to give explicit, closed form formulas for the star product on some functions on the affine space ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma)$ of (smooth) connections on the trivialized principal $G$-bundle on a compact, oriented two manifold $\Sigma.$ These formulas give a close relation between knot invariants, such as the Kauffman bracket polynomial, and the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials, arising in Chern Simons gauge theory, and deformation quantization of ${\mathcal A}(\Sigma).$ This relation echoes the relation between the manifold invariants of Witten [20] and Reshetikhin-Turaev [16] and {\em geometric} quantization of this space (or its symplectic quotient by the action of the gauge group). In our case this relation arises from explicit algebraic formulas arising from the (mathematically well-defined) functional integrals of [18].

Manifolds with trivial Chern classes II: Manifolds Isogenous to a Torus Product, coframed Manifolds and a question by Baldassarri

Abstract:Motivated by a general question addressed by Mario Baldassarri in 1956, we discuss characterizations of the Pseudo-Abelian Varieties introduced by Roth, and we introduce a first new notion, of Manifolds Isogenous to a k-Torus Product: the latter have the last k Chern classes trivial in rational cohomology and vanishing Chern numbers. We show that in dimension 2 the latter class is the correct substitute for some incorrect assertions by Enriques, Dantoni, Roth and Baldassarri: these are the surfaces with $K_X$ nef and $c_2(X)=0 \in H^4(X, \mathbb{Z})$. We observe in the last section, using a construction by Chad Schoen, that such a simple similar picture does not hold in higher dimension. We discuss then, as a class of solutions to Baldassarri's question, manifolds isogenous to projective (respectively: Kähler) manifolds whose tangent bundle or whose cotangent bundle has a trivial subbundle of positive rank. We see that the class of `partially framed' projective manifolds (that is, whose tangent bundle has a trivial subbundle) consists, in the case where $K_X$ is nef, of the Pseudo-Abelian varieties of Roth; while the class of `partially co-framed' projective manifolds is not yet fully understood in spite of the new results that we are able to show here: and we formulate some open questions and conjectures. In the course of the paper we address also the case of more general compact complex Manifolds, introducing the new notions of suspensions over parallelizable Manifolds, of twisted hyperelliptic Manifolds, and we describe the known results under the Kähler assumption.

Abstract:Given a 3-cocycle $\psi$ in the cohomology of a finite group $G$, we can define the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant of closed 3-manifolds. In this paper, we focus on the case where $\psi$ is a 3-cocycle canonically obtained from the second Chern class of a representation of $G$, and show some procedures for computing the invariant, and clarify its topological interpretation under some conditions.

Abstract:Garoufalidis and Levine defined a filtration for 3-manifolds equipped with some degree 1 map ($\mathbb{Z}\pi$-homology equivalence) to a fixed 3-manifold $N$ and showed that there is a natural surjection from a space of $\pi=\pi_1N$-decorated graphs to the graded quotient of the filtration over $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. In this paper, we show that in the case of $N=T^3$ the surjection of Garoufalidis--Levine is actually an isomorphism over $\mathbb{Q}$. For the proof, we construct a perturbative invariant by applying Fukaya's Morse homotopy theoretic construction to a local system of the quotient field of $\mathbb{Q}\pi$. The first invariant is an extension of the Casson invariant to $\mathbb{Z}\pi$-homology equivalences to the 3-torus. The results of this paper suggest that there is a highly nontrivial equivariant quantum invariants for 3-manifolds with $b_1=3$. We also discuss some generalizations of the perturbative invariant for other target spaces $N$.

Abstract:The Theta invariant is the simplest 3-manifold invariant defined with configuration space integrals. It is actually an invariant of rational homology spheres equipped with a combing over the complement of a point. It can be computed as the algebraic intersection of three propagators associated to a given combing X in the 2-point configuration space of a Q-sphere M. These propagators represent the linking form of M so that $\Theta(M,X)$ can be thought of as the cube of the linking form of M with respect to the combing X. The Theta invariant is the sum of $6 \lambda(M)$ and $p\_1(X)/4$, where $\lambda$ denotes the Casson-Walker invariant, and $p\_1$ is an invariant of combings that is an extension of a first relative Pontrjagin class. In this article, we present explicit propagators associated with Heegaard diagrams of a manifold, and we use these "Morse propagators," constructed with Greg Kuperberg, to prove a combinatorial formula for the Theta invariant in terms of Heegaard diagrams.
