Abstract:The mapping torus induced by an automorphism $\phi$ of the free abelian group $\mathbb{Z}^n$ is a semi-direct product $G=\mathbb{Z}^n\rtimes_\phi \mathbb{Z}$. We show that whether the rank of $G$ is equal to $n+1$ is decidable. As a corollary, the rank of $\mathbb{Z}^3\rtimes_\phi \mathbb{Z}$ is decidable.

Abstract:We prove that if $G_\phi=\langle F, t| t x t^{-1} =\phi(x), x\in F\rangle$ is the mapping torus group of an injective endomorphism $\phi: F\to F$ of a free group $F$ (of possibly infinite rank), then every two-generator subgroup $H$ of $G_\phi$ is either free or a sub-mapping torus. As an application we show that if $\phi\in \mathrm{Out}(F_r)$ (where $r\ge 2$) is a fully irreducible atoroidal automorphism then every two-generator subgroup of $G_\phi$ is either free or has finite index in $G_\phi$.

On Fixed-Point Sets of $\Z_2$-Tori in Positive Curvature

Abstract:In recent work of Kennard, Khalili Samani, and the last author, they generalize the Half-Maximal Symmetry Rank result of Wilking for torus actions on positively curved manifolds to $\mathbb{Z}_2$-tori with a fixed point. They show that if the rank is approximately one-fourth of the dimension of the manifold, then fixed point set components of small co-rank subgroups of the $\Z_2$-torus are homotopy equivalent to spheres, real projective spaces, complex projective spaces, or lens spaces. In this paper, we lower the bound on the rank of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus to approximately $n/6$ and $n/8$ and are able to classify either the integral cohomology ring or the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cohomology ring, respectively, of the fixed point set of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus.

Mapping class groups of exotic tori and actions by ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$

Abstract:We determine for which exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ of dimension $d\neq4$ the homomorphism from the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathcal{T}$ to ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$ given by the action on the first homology group is split surjective. As part of the proof we compute the mapping class group of all exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ that are obtained from the standard torus by a connected sum with an exotic sphere. Moreover, we show that any nontrivial ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$-action on $\mathcal{T}$ agrees on homology with the standard action, up to an automorphism of ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$. When combined, these results in particular show that many exotic tori do not admit any nontrivial differentiable action by ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$.

A Classification of Free and Free-Like Nilpotent Groups

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a $\mathcal{T}$-group (finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent) with centralizers outside of the derived subgroup being abelian of rank equal to $\text{rank}(Z_1)+1$. This includes the class of free nilpotent groups $\mathcal{N}_{r,c}$ of a given rank $r$ and class $c$. It is shown that the upper and lower central series coincide in such groups and from this that they are metabelian. We then prove that all such groups arise as semidirect products of free abelian groups with respect to representation $[G,G]\to \text{UT}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ by automorphisms constructed from integer powers of elements in defining relations we call integral weights of $G$.

On the one hand, not every infinite set of integers (containing 0 0 ) is a mapping degree set (Neofytidis, Wang, and Wang [Bull. Lond. Math. Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number, $K$ a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\mathbb{F}$ a finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_p$. For $\pi$ an admissible smooth representation of $\operatorname{GL}_2(K)$ over $\mathbb{F}$ satisfying certain multiplicity-one properties, we compute the rank of the associated étale $(\varphi,\mathcal{O}_K^{\times})$-module $D_A(\pi)$ defined by Breuil-Herzig-Hu-Morra-Schraen, extending their results.

A functorial approach to rank functions on triangulated categories

Abstract:We study rank functions on a triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ via its abelianisation $\operatorname{mod}\mathcal{C}$. We prove that every rank function on $\mathcal{C}$ can be interpreted as an additive function on $\operatorname{mod}\mathcal{C}$. As a consequence, every integral rank function has a unique decomposition into irreducible ones. Furthermore, we relate integral rank functions to a number of important concepts in the functor category $\operatorname{Mod}\mathcal{C}$. We study the connection between rank functions and functors from $\mathcal{C}$ to locally finite triangulated categories, generalising results by Chuang and Lazarev. In the special case $\mathcal{C}=\mathcal{T}^c$ for a compactly generated triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$, this connection becomes particularly nice, providing a link between rank functions on $\mathcal{C}$ and smashing localisations of $\mathcal{T}$. In this context, any integral rank function can be described using the composition length with respect to certain endofinite objects in $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, if $\mathcal{C}=\operatorname{per}(A)$ for a differential graded algebra $A$, we classify homological epimorphisms $A\to B$ with $\operatorname{per}(B)$ locally finite via special rank functions which we call idempotent.

Abstract:We provide explicit and unified formulas for the cocycles of all degrees on the normalized bar resolutions of finite abelian groups. This is achieved by constructing a chain map from the normalized bar resolution to a Koszul-like resolution for any given finite abelian group. With a help of the obtained cocycle formulas, we determine all the braided linear Gr-categories and compute the Dijkgraaf-Witten Invariants of the $n$-torus for all $n$.
The zeta-determinants and anlaytic torsion of a metric mapping torus

Abstract:We use the BFK-gluing formula for zeta-determinants to compute the zeta-determinant and analytic torsion of a metric mapping torus induced from an isometry. As applications, we compute the zeta-determinants of the Laplacians defined on a Klein bottle ${\mathbb K}$ and some compact co-Kähler manifold ${\mathbb T}_{\varphi}$. We also show that a metric mapping torus and a Riemannian product manifold with a round circle have the same heat trace asymptotic expansions. We finally compute the analytic torsion of a metric mapping torus for the Witten deformed Laplacian and recover the result of J. Marcsik in \cite{Ma}.

Abstract:We study the maximal ranks of a free and a free abelian quotients of a finitely generated group, called co-rank (inner rank, cut number) and the Betti number, respectively. We show that any combination of these values within obvious constraints is realized for some finitely presented group, which is important for manifold and foliation topology.

Abstract:The long-standing Halperin--Carlsson conjecture (basically also known as the toral rank conjecture) states that the sum of all Betti numbers of a well-behaved space $X$ (with cohomology taken with coefficients in the cyclic group $\zz_p$ in characteristic $p>0$ respectively with rational coefficients for characteristic 0) is at least $2^n$ where $n$ is the rank of an $n$-torus $\zz_p \times \stackrel{(n)}...\times \zz_p$ (in characteristic $p>0$) respectively $\s^1 \times \stackrel{(n)}...\times \s^1$ (in characteristic 0) acting freely (characteristic $p>0$) respectively almost freely (characteristic 0) on $X$. This conjecture was addressed by a multitude of authors in several distinct contexts and special cases. However, having undergone various reformulations and reproofs over the decades, the best known general lower bound on the Betti numbers remains a very low linear one. This article investigates the conjecture in characteristics 0 and 2, which results in improving the lower bound in characteristic 0.
