Abstract:We develop new methods for computing the precise Dehn functions of coabelian subgroups of direct products of groups, that is, subgroups which arise as kernels of homomorphisms from the direct product onto a free abelian group. These improve and generalise previous results by Carter and Forester on Dehn functions of level sets in products of simply connected cube complexes, by Bridson on Dehn functions of cocyclic groups and by Dison on Dehn functions of coabelian groups. We then provide several applications of our methods to subgroups of direct products of free groups, to groups with interesting geometric finiteness properties and to subgroups of direct products of right-angled Artin groups.

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka shows that the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of two $K3$ surfaces is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. Their result requires that the manifolds are simply connected and the signature of one of them is $16 \mod 32$. We generalize the Pin$(2)$-equivariant family Bauer-Furuta invariant to nonsimply connected manifolds, and construct a refinement of this invariant. We use it to show that, if $X_1,X_2$ are two homology tori such that the determinants $r_1,r_2$ of them are odd, then the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of $X_1\# X_2$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity.

Abstract:We prove that Abels' group over an arbitrary nondiscrete locally compact field has a quadratic Dehn function. As applications, we exhibit connected Lie groups and polycyclic groups whose asymptotic cones have uncountable abelian fundamental group. We also obtain, from the case of finite characteristic, uncountably many non-quasi-isometric finitely generated solvable groups, as well as peculiar examples of fundamental groups of asymptotic cones.

Abstract:We study a quasimorphism, which we call the Dehn twist coefficient (DTC), from the mapping class group of a surface (with a chosen compact boundary component) that generalizes the well-studied fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) to surfaces of infinite type. Indeed, for surfaces of finite type the DTC coincides with the FDTC. We provide a characterization of the DTC (and thus also of the FDTC) as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism satisfying certain positivity conditions. The FDTC has image contained in $\mathbb{Q}$. In contrast to this, we find that for some surfaces of infinite type the DTC has image all of $\mathbb{R}$. To see this we provide a new construction of maps with irrational rotation behavior for some surfaces of infinite type with a countable space of ends or even just one end. In fact, we find that the DTC is the right tool to detect irrational rotation behavior, even for surfaces without boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a unified approach to study the cohomology theories and deformation theories of various types of operators in the category of Lie algebras, including modified $r$-matrices, crossed homomorphisms, derivations, homomorphisms, relative Rota-Baxter operators, twisted Rota-Baxter operators, Reynolds operators and deformation maps of matched pairs of Lie algebras. The main ingredients are quasi-twilled Lie algebras. We introduce two types of deformation maps of a quasi-twilled Lie algebra. Deformation maps of type I unify modified $r$-matrices, crossed homomorphisms, derivations and homomorphisms between Lie algebras, while deformation maps of type II unify relative Rota-Baxter operators, twisted Rota-Baxter operators, Reynolds operators and deformation maps of matched pairs of Lie algebras. We further give the controlling algebras and cohomologies of these two types of deformation maps, which not only recover the existing results for crossed homomorphisms, derivations, homomorphisms, relative Rota-Baxter operators, twisted Rota-Baxter operators and Reynolds operators, but also leads to some new results which are unable to solve before, e.g. the controlling algebras and cohomologies of modified $r$-matrices and deformation maps of matched pairs of Lie algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce two types of deformation maps of quasi-twilled associative algebras. Each type of deformation maps unify various operators on associative algebras. Right deformation maps unify modified Rota-Baxter operators of weight $\lambda$, derivations, homomorphisms and crossed homomorphisms. Left deformation maps unify relative Rota-Baxter operators of weight 0, twisted Rota-Baxter operators, Reynolds operators and deformation maps of matched pairs of associative algebras. Furthermore, we give the controlling algebra and the cohomology of these two types of deformation maps. On the one hand, we obtain some existing results for modified Rota-Baxter operators of weight $\lambda$, derivations, homomorphisms, crossed homomorphisms, relative Rota-Baxter operators of weight 0, twisted Rota-Baxter operators and Reynolds operators. On the other hand, we also obtain some new results, such as the controlling algebra of a modified Rota-Baxter operator of weight $\lambda$ on an associative algebra, the controlling algebra and the cohomology of a deformation map of a matched pair of associative algebras.

Abstract:We compute Mackey functor-valued Tor over certain free incomplete Tambara functors, generalizing the computation of Tor over a polynomial ring on one generator. In contrast with the classical situation where the resulting Tor groups vanish above degree one, we present examples where Tor is nonvanishing in almost every degree. We also discuss a 2-primary analogue of the odd-primary Koszul complexes defined in our other work \cite{MQS24a}.

Abstract:We study the action of the mapping class group on the subspace of de Rham classes in the degree-two bounded cohomology of a hyperbolic surface. In particular, we show that the only fixed nontrivial finite-dimensional subspace is the one generated by the Euler class. As a consequence, we get that the action of the mapping class group on the space of de Rham quasimorphisms has no fixed points.

Abstract:Let $Z\subset Fl(n)$ be the closure of a generic torus orbit in the full flag variety. Anderson-Tymoczko express the cohomology class of $Z$ as a sum of classes of Richardson varieties. Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda-Park give a decomposition of the permutohedron, the moment map image of $Z$, into subpolytopes corresponding to the summands of the Anderson-Tymoczko formula. We construct an explicit toric degeneration inside $Fl(n)$ of $Z$ into Richardson varieties, whose moment map images coincide with the HHMP decomposition, thereby obtaining a new proof of the Anderson-Tymoczko formula.

Abstract:The group $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is obtained from $G\ast G$ by forcing each element $g$ in the first free factor to commute with the copy of $g$ in the second free factor. We make significant additions to the list of properties that the functor $\mathfrak{X}$ is known to preserve. We also investigate the geometry and complexity of the word problem for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$. Subtle features of $\mathfrak{X}$ are encoded in a normal abelian subgroup $W<\mathfrak{X}(G)$ that is a module over $\mathbb{Z} Q$, where $Q= H_1(G,\mathbb{Z})$. We establish a structural result for this module and illustrate its utility by proving that $\mathfrak{X}$ preserves virtual nilpotence, the Engel condition, and growth type -- polynomial, exponential, or intermediate. We also use it to establish isoperimetric inequalities for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ when $G$ lies in a class that includes Thompson's group $F$ and all non-fibered Kähler groups. The word problem is solvable in $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ if and only if it is solvable in $G$. The Dehn function of $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is bounded below by a cubic polynomial if $G$ maps onto a non-abelian free group.

Abstract:Subgroups of direct products of finitely many finitely generated free groups form a natural class that plays an important role in geometric group theory. Its members include fundamental examples, such as the Stallings-Bieri groups. This raises the problem of understanding their geometric invariants. We prove that finitely presented subgroups of direct products of three free groups, as well as subgroups of finiteness type $\mathcal{F}_{n-1}$ in a direct product of $n$ free groups, have Dehn function bounded above by $N^9$. This gives a positive answer to a question of Dison within these important subclasses and provides new insights in the context of Bridson's conjecture that finitely presented subgroups of direct products of free groups have polynomially bounded Dehn function. We also give the first precise computation of a superquadratic Dehn function of a finitely presented subgroup of a direct product of finitely many free groups: we show that the Bridson-Dison group is a subgroup of a direct product of three free groups with Dehn function $N^4$. To prove our results we generalise techniques for "pushing fillings" into normal subgroups and define a new invariant for obtaining optimal lower bounds on Dehn functions.
