Abstract:We consider quadrangular and pentagonal maps on the torus of certain types of degree sequences. We prove some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such maps. Similar results are known for triangular maps.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:We classify rational solutions of a specific type of the set theoretical version of the pentagon equation. That is, we find all quadrirational maps where are two rational functions on two arguments, that serve as solutions of the pentagon equation. Furthermore, provided a pentagon map that admits a partial inverse, we obtain genuine entwining pentagon set theoretical solutions. Finally, we show how to obtain Yang-Baxter maps from entwining pentagon maps.

Abstract:We consider the rich dynamics and bifurcations exhibited by a three-dimensional quadratic map. Torus doubling bifurcations are central to bifurcation theory. Such bifurcations can only occur in a higher dimensional map of dimensions greater than or equal to three. After subsequent doublings, formation of Shilnikov attractors and hyperchaotic attractors are usually observed. It is shown that the map under consideration shows both resonant and ergodic torus doubling bifurcation. We show that the system exhibits resonant torus doubling bifurcation in which the doubled mode-locked periodic orbits lies on a Möbius strip. Additionally, we also illustrate the doubling of ergodic tori and analyze the bifurcation via the use of the second Poincaré section and the method of Lyapunov bundles. The analysis involves the techniques of construction of one-dimensional manifolds, a one-parameter continuation of saddle periodic orbits, and multi-dimensional Newton–Raphson method to locate the saddle periodic orbits.

Abstract:Semi-Equivelar maps are generalizations of Archimedean solids to the surfaces other than 2-sphere. There are eight semi-equivelar maps of types $\{3^{3},4^{2}\}$, $\{3^{2},4,3,4\}$, $\{6,3,6,3\}$, $\{3^{4},6\}$, $\{4,8^{2}\}$, $\{3,12^{2}\}$, $\{4,6,12\}$, $\{6,4,3,4\}$ exist on the torus. In this article we show the existence of Hamiltonian cycle in each semi-equivelar map on the torus except the map of type $\{3,12^{2}\}$. This result gives the partial solution to the conjecture which is given by Gr$\ddot{u}$nbaum \cite{grunbaum} and Nash-Williams \cite{nash williams} that every 4-connected graph on the torus is Hamiltonian.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).
The Torus of Triangles

Abstract:We prove the 2-torus $\mathbb T$, an abelian linear algebraic group, occurs as a compactification of the moduli space of labeled, oriented, similarity classes of triangles. A (possibly degenerate) triangle is {\it inscribable} if it can be inscribed in a circle. We show $\mathbb T$ is a fine moduli space of labeled, oriented, possibly-degenerate inscribable classes, and that the (moduli) stack of (unlabeled, unoriented) possibly-degenerate inscribable classes is the quotient $[\mathbb T/D_6]$. To illustrate how aptly $\mathbb T$ describes triangle classes we show the main triangle types form distinguished algebraic structures: subgroups, cosets, and elements of small order, and use the natural metric on $\mathbb T$ to compare them.

On the generic degree of two-parameter period mappings

Abstract:We present a method for computing the generic degree of a period map defined on a quasi-projective surface. As an application, we explicitly compute the generic degree of three period maps underlying families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from toric hypersurfaces. As a consequence, we show that the generic Torelli theorem holds for these cases.

Abstract:We solve three enumerative problems concerning families of planar maps. More precisely, we establish algebraic equations for the generating function of non-separable triangulations in which all vertices have degree at least d, for a certain value d chosen in {3, 4, 5}. The originality of the problem lies in the fact that degree restrictions are placed both on vertices and faces. Our proofs first follow Tutte's classical approach: we decompose maps by deleting the root and translate the decomposition into an equation satisfied by the generating function of the maps under consideration. Then we proceed to solve the equation obtained using a recent technique that extends the so-called quadratic method.

Abstract:The automorphism group of a map on a surface acts naturally on its flags (triples of incident vertices, edges, and faces). We will study the action of the automorphism group of a map on its edges. A map is semi-equivelar if all of its vertices have the same type of face-cycles. A semi-equivelar toroidal map refers to a semi-equivelar map embedded on a torus. If a map has k edge orbits under its automorphism group, it is referred to as a k -edge orbital or k -orbital. Specifically, it is referred to as an edge-transitive map if k = 1 . If any two edges have the same edge-symbol, a map is said to be edge-homogeneous. Every edge-homogeneous toroidal map has an edge-transitive cover, as proved in [A. Orbanińá, D. Pellicer, T. Pisanski and T. W. Tucker, Edge-transitive maps of low genus, Ars Math. Contemp. 4 2011, 2, 385‚Äď402]. In this article, we show the existence and give a classification of k -edge covers of semi-equivelar toroidal maps.

Abstract:The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a crucial concept in topology, providing deep insights into the structure and properties of the manifolds and the corresponding maps. This concept has been thoroughly investigated, particularly in the realm of simplicial maps between orientable triangulable spaces. In this paper, we concentrate on constructing simplicial degree $d$ self-maps on $n$-spheres. We describe the construction of several such maps, demonstrating that for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a degree $d$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $3|d| + n - 1$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. Further, we prove that, for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a simplicial map of degree $3 d$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d| + n$ vertices, as well as a simplicial map of degree $3d+\frac{d}{|d|}$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d|+n+3$ vertices, to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. Furthermore, we show that for any $|k| \geq 2$ and $n \geq |k|$, a degree $k$ simplicial map exists from a triangulated $n$-sphere $K$ with $|k| + n + 3$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. We also prove that for $d = 2$ and 3, these constructions produce vertex-minimal degree $d$ self-maps of $n$-spheres. Additionally, for every $n \geq 2$, we construct a degree $n+1$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $2n + 4$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. We also prove that this construction provides facet minimal degree $n+1$ self-maps of $n$-spheres.

Abstract:We consider the problem of counting and classifying domino tilings of a quadriculated torus. The counting problem for rectangles was studied by Kasteleyn and we use many of his ideas. Domino tilings of planar regions can be represented by height functions; for a torus given by a lattice L, these functions exhibit arithmetic L-quasiperiodicity. The additive constants determine the flux of the tiling, which can be interpreted as a vector in the dual lattice (2L)*. We give a characterization of the actual flux values, and of how corresponding tilings behave. We also consider domino tilings of the infinite square lattice; tilings of tori can be seen as a particular case of those. We describe the construction and usage of Kasteleyn matrices in the counting problem, and how they can be applied to count tilings with prescribed flux values. Finally, we study the limit distribution of the number of tilings with a given flux value as a uniform scaling dilates the lattice L.

Abstract:A classical article by Misiurewicz and Ziemian ( J. Lond. Math. Soc. 40 (2) (1989), 490–506) classifies the elements in Homeo $_{0}(\mathbf{T}^{2})$ by their rotation set $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ , according to wether $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ is a point, a segment or a set with nonempty interior. A recent classification of nonwandering elements in Homeo $_{0}(\mathbf{T}^{2})$ by Koropecki and Tal was given in ( Invent. Math. 196 (2014), 339–381), according to the intrinsic underlying ambient space where the dynamics takes place: planar, annular and strictly toral maps. We study the link between these two classifications, showing that, even abroad the nonwandering setting, annular maps are characterized by rotation sets which are rational segments . Also, we obtain information on the sublinear diffusion of orbits in the—not very well understood—case that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ has nonempty interior.

Abstract:For the family of quadratic rational functions having a 2-cycle of bounded type Siegel disks, we prove that each of the boundaries of these Siegel disks contains at most one critical point. In the parameter plane, we prove that the locus for which the boundaries of the 2-cycle of Siegel disks contain two critical points is a Jordan curve.
