We present an example of a semigroup whose Dehn function is equivalent to , thus strictly inside the said gap. Abstract:We prove that Abels' group over an arbitrary nondiscrete locally compact field has a quadratic Dehn function. As applications, we exhibit connected Lie groups and polycyclic groups whose asymptotic cones have uncountable abelian fundamental group. We also obtain, from the case of finite characteristic, uncountably many non-quasi-isometric finitely generated solvable groups, as well as peculiar examples of fundamental groups of asymptotic cones.

Abstract:The group $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is obtained from $G\ast G$ by forcing each element $g$ in the first free factor to commute with the copy of $g$ in the second free factor. We make significant additions to the list of properties that the functor $\mathfrak{X}$ is known to preserve. We also investigate the geometry and complexity of the word problem for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$. Subtle features of $\mathfrak{X}$ are encoded in a normal abelian subgroup $W<\mathfrak{X}(G)$ that is a module over $\mathbb{Z} Q$, where $Q= H_1(G,\mathbb{Z})$. We establish a structural result for this module and illustrate its utility by proving that $\mathfrak{X}$ preserves virtual nilpotence, the Engel condition, and growth type -- polynomial, exponential, or intermediate. We also use it to establish isoperimetric inequalities for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ when $G$ lies in a class that includes Thompson's group $F$ and all non-fibered Kähler groups. The word problem is solvable in $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ if and only if it is solvable in $G$. The Dehn function of $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is bounded below by a cubic polynomial if $G$ maps onto a non-abelian free group.

Abstract:Consider the following classes of pairs consisting of a group and a finite collection of subgroups: $\mathcal{C}= \left\{ (G,\mathcal H) \mid \text{$\mathcal{H}$ is hyperbolically embedded in $G$} \right\}$ and $ \mathcal{D}= \left\{ (G,\mathcal H) \mid \text{the relative Dehn function of $(G,\mathcal H)$ is well-defined} \right\}.$ Let $G$ be a group that splits as a finite graph of groups such that each vertex group $G_v$ is assigned a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}_v$, and each edge group $G_e$ is conjugate to a subgroup of some $H\in \mathcal{H}_v$ if $e$ is adjacent to $v$. Then there is a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}$ of $G$ such that: $\bullet$ If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal C$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal C$. $\bullet$ If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal D$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal D$. $\bullet$ For any vertex $v$ and for any $g\in G_v$, the element $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $Q\in\mathcal{H}_v$ if and only if $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $H\in\mathcal{H}$. That edge groups are not assumed to be finitely generated and that they do not necessarily belong to a peripheral collection of subgroups of an adjacent vertex are the main differences between this work and previous results in the literature. The method of proof provides lower and upper bounds of the relative Dehn functions in terms of the relative Dehn functions of the vertex groups. These bounds generalize and improve analogous results in the literature.

Abstract:We prove that groups in a certain class of metabelian locally compact groups, have quadratic Dehn function. As an application, we embed the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups into finitely presented metabelian groups with quadratic Dehn function. Also, we prove that Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian groups, in which the lamplighter groups embed, have quadratic Dehn function.

Abstract:We continue to study Pythagorean unitary representation of Richard Thompson's groups $F$, $T$ and $V$ that are built from a single isometry from a Hilbert space to its double. By developing powerful diagrammatically based techniques we show that each such representation splits into a diffuse and an atomic parts. We previously proved that the diffuse part is Ind-mixing: it does not contain induced representations of finite-dimensional ones. We fully decompose the atomic part: the building blocks are monomial representations arising from a precise family of parabolic subgroups of $F$.

Abstract:Thompson's group F is the group of all increasing dyadic piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the closed unit interval. We compute Sigma^m(F) and Sigma^m(F;Z), the homotopical and homological Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariants of F, and we show that Sigma^m(F) = Sigma^m(F;Z). As an application, we show that, for every m, F has subgroups of type F_{m-1} which are not of type F_{m}.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented groups with cubic Dehn function containing a finitely generated infinite torsion subgroup. Moreover, we show that any infinite free Burnside group with sufficiently large odd exponent can be embedded as a subgroup of a finitely presented group with cubic Dehn function.

Abstract:We study a quasimorphism, which we call the Dehn twist coefficient (DTC), from the mapping class group of a surface (with a chosen compact boundary component) that generalizes the well-studied fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) to surfaces of infinite type. Indeed, for surfaces of finite type the DTC coincides with the FDTC. We provide a characterization of the DTC (and thus also of the FDTC) as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism satisfying certain positivity conditions. The FDTC has image contained in $\mathbb{Q}$. In contrast to this, we find that for some surfaces of infinite type the DTC has image all of $\mathbb{R}$. To see this we provide a new construction of maps with irrational rotation behavior for some surfaces of infinite type with a countable space of ends or even just one end. In fact, we find that the DTC is the right tool to detect irrational rotation behavior, even for surfaces without boundary.

Abstract:We characterize the fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) on the n-stranded braid group as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism to of defect at most 1 that equals 1 on the positive full twist and vanishes on the -stranded braid subgroup. In a different direction, we establish that the slice-Bennequin inequality holds with the FDTC in place of the writhe. In other words, we establish an affine linear lower bound for the smooth slice genus of the closure of a braid in terms of the braid's FDTC. We also discuss connections between these two seemingly unrelated results. In the appendix, we provide a unifying framework for the slice-Bennequin inequality and its counterpart for the FDTC.

Abstract:We review recent developments in size separation in vibrated granular materials. Motivated by a need in industry to efficiently handle granular materials and a desire to make fundamental advances in non-equilibrium physics, experimental and theoretical investigations have shown size separation to be a complex phenomena. Large particles in a vibrated granular system invariably rise to the top. However, they may also sink to the bottom, or show other patterns depending on subtle variations in physical conditions. While size ratio is a dominant factor, particle specific properties such as density, inelasticity and friction can play an important role. The nature of the energy input, boundary conditions and interstitial air have been also shown to be significant factors in determining spatial distributions. The presence of convection can enhance mixing or lead to size separation. Experimental techniques including direct visualization and magnetic resonance imaging are being used to investigate these properties. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation techniques have been developed to probe size separation. Analytical methods such as kinetic theory are being used to study the interplay between particle size and density in the vibro-fluidized regime, and geometric models have been proposed to describe size separation for deep beds. Besides discussing these studies, we will also review the impact of inelastic collision and friction on the density and velocity distributions to gain a deeper appreciation of the non-equilibrium nature of the system. While a substantial number of studies have been accomplished, considerable work is still required to achieve a firm description of the phenomena.

Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms on groups

Abstract:Consider groups such as Mordell-Weil groups of abelian varieties over number fields, odd algebraic $K$-theory groups of number fields, or finitely generated subgroups of the multiplicative groups of number fields. They are all equipped with systems of reduction maps; thus, one can investigate the Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms with coefficients in such groups. In this paper, we prove that the theorem holds for the forms whose rank equals $2$ or $3$, and we demonstrate that it does not hold for higher ranks by providing a counterexample. We also show that our results constitute a generalization of the classic Hasse-Minkowski theorem for binary and ternary integral forms.

Abstract:Finite decomposition complexity (FDC) is a large scale property of a metric space. It generalizes finite asymptotic dimension and applies to a wide class of groups. To make the property quantitative, a countable ordinal “the complexity” can be defined for a metric space with FDC. In this paper we prove that the subgroup Z≀Z of Thompsonʼs group F belongs to Dω exactly, where ω is the smallest infinite ordinal number and show that F equipped with the word-metric with respect to the infinite generating set {x0,x1,…,xn,…} does not have finite decomposition complexity.
