Abstract:In this paper we show that prime sum graphs on $n$ vertices -- which are graphs on vertex set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ where $ij$ is an edge when $i+j$ is prime -- contain all trees with at most $\exp( c \log n / \log\log n)$ vertices as induced subgraphs. We also prove some results for related graphs, and end with some unsolved problems.

Abstract:Boesch’s theorem says that “Suppose that a connected graph G has two non-adjacent 2-degree vertices u1 and u2. Then t(G)≤t(G/{u1,u2}), where t(G) is the number of spanning trees of G.” In this paper, we generalize this theorem as follows: “Suppose that G is a connected graph of order at least 3, and that u1 and u2 are two vertices of degree m and n, respectively, in G. Then t(G)≤mn−m02m+n−2m0t(G/{u1,u2}), where m0(≥0) is the number of multiple edges between u1 and u2.”

Abstract:We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.

Abstract:We show that there exists an outerplanar graph on $O(n^{c})$ vertices for $c = \log_2(3+\sqrt{10}) \approx 2.623$ that contains every tree on $n$ vertices as a subgraph. This extends a result of Chung and Graham from 1983 who showed that there exist (non-planar) $n$-vertex graphs with $O(n \log n)$ edges that contain all trees on $n$ vertices as subgraphs and a result from Gol'dberg and Livshits from 1968 who showed that there exists a universal tree for $n$-vertex trees on $n^{O(\log(n))}$ vertices. Furthermore, we determine the number of vertices needed in the worst case for a planar graph to contain three given trees as subgraph to be on the order of $\frac{3}{2}n$, even if the three trees are caterpillars. This answers a question recently posed by Alecu et al. in 2024. Lastly, we investigate (outer)planar graphs containing all (outer)planar graphs as subgraph, determining exponential lower bounds in both cases. We also construct a planar graph on $n^{O(\log(n))}$ vertices containing all $n$-vertex outerplanar graphs as subgraphs.

Getting to the Root of the Problem: Sums of Squares for Infinite Trees

Abstract:The inducibility of a graph represents its maximum density as an induced subgraph over all possible sequences of graphs of size growing to infinity. This invariant of graphs has been extensively studied since its introduction in $1975$ by Pippenger and Golumbic. In $2017$, Czabarka, Székely and Wagner extended this notion to leaf-labeled rooted binary trees, which are objects widely studied in the field of phylogenetics. They obtain the first results and bounds for the densities and inducibilities of such trees. Following up on their work, we apply Razborov's flag algebra theory to this setting, introducing the flag algebra of rooted leaf-labeled binary trees. This framework allows us to use polynomial optimization methods, based on semidefinite programming, to efficiently obtain new upper bounds for the inducibility of trees and to improve existing ones. Additionally, we obtain the first outer approximations of profiles of trees, which represent all possible simultaneous densities of a pair of trees. Finally, we are able to prove the non-convexity of some of these profiles.

Abstract:Sumner's universal tournament conjecture states that every $(2n-2)$-vertex tournament should contain a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree. If we know the number of leaves of an oriented tree, or its maximum degree, can we guarantee a copy of the tree with fewer vertices in the tournament? Due to work initiated by Häggkvist and Thomason (for number of leaves) and Kühn, Mycroft and Osthus (for maximum degree), it is known that improvements can be made over Sumner's conjecture in some cases, and indeed sometimes an $(n+o(n))$-vertex tournament may be sufficient. In this paper, we give new results on these problems. Specifically, we show i) for every $\alpha>0$, there exists $n_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that, whenever $n\geqslant n_0$, every $((1+\alpha)n+k)$-vertex tournament contains a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree with $k$ leaves, and ii) for every $\alpha>0$, there exists $c>0$ and $n_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that, whenever $n\geqslant n_0$, every $(1+\alpha)n$-vertex tournament contains a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree with maximum degree $\Delta(T)\leqslant cn$. Our first result gives an asymptotic form of a conjecture by Havet and Thomassé, while the second improves a result of Mycroft and Naia which applies to trees with polylogarithmic maximum degree.

Abstract:Erdős and Hajnal conjectured that for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph $G$ has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$ (a graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$). Alon, Pach, and Solymosi reduced the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture to the case when $H$ is {\em prime} (that is, $H$ cannot be obtained by vertex-substitution from smaller graphs); but until now, it was not shown for any prime graph with more than five vertices. We will provide infinitely many prime graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Let $H$ be a graph with the property that for every prime induced subgraph $G'$ with $|G'|\ge 3$, $G'$ has a vertex of degree one and a vertex of degree $|G'|-2$. We will prove that every graph $H$ with this property satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture, and infinitely many graphs with this property are prime. More generally, say a graph is {\em buildable} if every prime induced subgraph with at least three vertices has a vertex of degree one. We prove that if $H_1$ and $\overline{H_2}$ are buildable, there exists $c>0$ such that every graph $G$ that is both $H_1$-free and $H_2$-free has a clique or a stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. Our proof uses a new technique of ``iterative sparsification'', where we pass to a sequence of successively more restricted induced subgraphs. This approach also extends to ordered graphs and to tournaments. For ordered graphs, we obtain a theorem which significantly extends a recent result of Pach and Tomon about excluding monotone paths; and for tournaments, we obtain infinitely many new prime tournaments that satisfy the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture (in tournament form).

Abstract:A graph is prime (with respect to the split decomposition) if its vertex set does not admit a partition (A,B) (called a split) with |A|, |B| >= 2 such that the set of edges joining A and B induces a complete bipartite graph. We prove that for each n, there exists N such that every prime graph on at least N vertices contains a vertex-minor isomorphic to either a cycle of length n or a graph consisting of two disjoint cliques of size n joined by a matching.

Abstract:Sumner's universal tournament conjecture states that any tournament on $2n-2$ vertices contains a copy of any directed tree on $n$ vertices. We prove an asymptotic version of this conjecture, namely that any tournament on $(2+o(1))n$ vertices contains a copy of any directed tree on $n$ vertices. In addition, we prove an asymptotically best possible result for trees of bounded degree, namely that for any fixed $\Delta$, any tournament on $(1+o(1))n$ vertices contains a copy of any directed tree on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $\Delta$.

Prime vertex-minors of a prime graph

Abstract:A graph is prime if it does not admit a partition $(A,B)$ of its vertex set such that $\min\{|A|,|B|\} \geq 2$ and the rank of the $A\times B$ submatrix of its adjacency matrix is at most $1$. A vertex $v$ of a graph is non-essential if at least two of the three kinds of vertex-minor reductions at $v$ result in prime graphs. In 1994, Allys proved that every prime graph with at least four vertices has a non-essential vertex unless it is locally equivalent to a cycle graph. We prove that every prime graph with at least four vertices has at least two non-essential vertices unless it is locally equivalent to a cycle graph. As a corollary, we show that for a prime graph $G$ with at least six vertices and a vertex $x$, there is a vertex $v \ne x$ such that $G \setminus v$ or $G * v \setminus v$ is prime, unless $x$ is adjacent to all other vertices and $G$ is isomorphic to a particular graph on odd number of vertices. Furthermore, we show that a prime graph with at least four vertices has at least three non-essential vertices, unless it is locally equivalent to a graph consisting of at least two internally-disjoint paths between two fixed distinct vertices having no common neighbors. We also prove analogous results for pivot-minors.

Abstract:In this paper, we enumerate prime graphs with respect to the Cartesian multiplication of graphs. We use the unique factorization of a connected graph into the product of prime graphs given by Sabidussi to find explicit formulas for labeled and unlabeled prime graphs. In the case of species, we construct the exponential composition of species based on the arithmetic product of species of Maia and Méndez and the quotient species, and express the species of connected graphs as the exponential composition of the species of prime graphs.

Abstract:Cartesian-factorable extensions and subgraphs of prime graphs are investigated. It is shown that minimal factorable extensions and maximal factorable subgraphs are not unique and that finding them is NP-hard even, in the case of minimal factorable extensions, if the prime graph in question is required to be a tree. Tight bounds on the density of a prime graphs minimal factorable extension are derived. A dynamic programming algorithm is given for finding factorable extensions of certain types of trees.

Abstract:The Gyárfás–Sumner conjecture says that for every tree T and every integer , if G is a graph with no clique of size t and with sufficiently large chromatic number, then G contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to T . This remains open, but we prove that under the same hypotheses, G contains a subgraph H isomorphic to T that is "path-induced"; that is, for some distinguished vertex r , every path of H with one end r is an induced path of G .

Prime Parking Functions on Rooted Trees

Abstract:For a labeled, rooted tree with edges oriented towards the root, we consider the vertices as parking spots and the edge orientation as a one-way street. Each driver, starting with her preferred parking spot, searches for and parks in the first unoccupied spot along the directed path to the root. If all $n$ drivers park, the sequence of spot preferences is called a parking function. We consider the sequences, called \emph{prime} parking functions, for which each driver parks and each edge in the tree is traversed by some driver after failing to park at her preferred spot. We prove that the total number of prime parking functions on trees with $n$ vertices is $(2n-2)!$. Additionally, we generalize \emph{increasing} parking functions, those in which the drivers park with a weakly-increasing order of preference, to trees and prove that the total number of increasing prime parking functions on trees with $n$ vertices is $(n-1)!S_{n-1}$, where $\{S_i\}_{i \geq 0}$ are the large Schröder numbers.

Abstract:In 2006, Marcus and Tardos proved that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are cyclic orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that the common elements of any two distinct orders $A^i$ and $A^j$ appear in reversed cyclic order in $A^i$ and $A^j$, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2}\log n)$. This result is tight up to the logarithmic factor and has since become an important tool in Discrete Geometry. We improve this to the optimal bound $O(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we show that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are linear orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that no three symbols appear in the same order in any two distinct linear orders, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2})$. Using this result, we resolve several open problems in Discrete Geometry and Extremal Graph Theory as follows. We prove that every $n$-vertex topological graph that does not contain a self-crossing four-cycle has $O(n^{3/2})$ edges. This resolves a problem of Marcus and Tardos from 2006. We also show that $n$ pseudo-circles in the plane can be cut into $O(n^{3/2})$ pseudo-segments, which, in turn, implies new bounds on point-circle incidences and on other geometric problems. Moreover, we prove that the edge-ordered Turán number of the four-cycle $C_4^{1243}$ is $\Theta(n^{3/2})$. This answers a question of Gerbner, Methuku, Nagy, Pálvölgyi, Tardos and Vizer. Using different methods, we determine the largest possible extremal number that an edge-ordered forest of order chromatic number two can have. Kucheriya and Tardos showed that every such graph has extremal number at most $n2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}$, and conjectured that this can be improved to $n(\log n)^{O(1)}$. We disprove their conjecture by showing that for every $C>0$, there exists an edge-ordered tree of order chromatic number two whose extremal number is $\Omega(n 2^{C\sqrt{\log n}})$.

Large Induced Forests in Graphs.

Abstract:In this article, we prove three theorems. The first is that every connected graph of order n and size m has an induced forest of order at least 8n-2m-2/9 with equality if and only if such a graph is obtained from a tree by expanding every vertex to a clique of order either 4 or 5. This improves the previous lower bound 2n22m+n of Alon-Kahn-Seymour for mï¾ź5n/2, and implies that such a graph has an induced forest of order at least n/2 for m<ï¾ź7n/4ï¾ź. This latter result relates to the conjecture of Albertson and Berman that every planar graph of order n has an induced forest of order at least n/2. The second is that every connected triangle-free graph of order n and size m has an induced forest of order at least 20n-5m-5/19. This bound is sharp by the cube and the Wagner graph. It also improves the previous lower bound n-m/4 of Alon-Mubayi-Thomas for mï¾ź4n-20, and implies that such a graph has an induced forest of order at least 5n/8 for m<ï¾ź13n/8ï¾ź. This latter result relates to the conjecture of Akiyama and Watanabe that every bipartite planar graph of order n has an induced forest of order at least 5n/8. The third is that every connected planar graph of order n and size m with girth at least 5 has an induced forest of order at least 8n-2m-2/7 with equality if and only if such a graph is obtained from a tree by expanding every vertex to one of five specific graphs. This implies that such a graph has an induced forest of order at least 2n+1/3, where 7n/10 was conjectured to be the best lower bound by Kowalik, Lužar, and Škrekovski.

Abstract:Given two integers $\ell$ and $p$ as well as $\ell$ graph classes $\mathcal{H}_1,\ldots,\mathcal{H}_\ell$, the problems $\mathsf{GraphPart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell,p)$, \break $\mathsf{VertPart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell)$, and $\mathsf{EdgePart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell)$ ask, given graph $G$ as input, whether $V(G)$, $V(G)$, $E(G)$ respectively can be partitioned into $\ell$ sets $S_1, \ldots, S_\ell$ such that, for each $i$ between $1$ and $\ell$, $G[S_i] \in \mathcal{H}_i$, $G[S_i] \in \mathcal{H}_i$, $(V(G),S_i) \in \mathcal{H}_i$ respectively. Moreover in $\mathsf{GraphPart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell,p)$, we request that the number of edges with endpoints in different sets of the partition is bounded by $p$. We show that if there exist dynamic programming tree-decomposition-based algorithms for recognizing the graph classes $\mathcal{H}_i$, for each $i$, then we can constructively create a dynamic programming tree-decomposition-based algorithms for $\mathsf{GraphPart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell,p)$, $\mathsf{VertPart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell)$, and $\mathsf{EdgePart}(\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_\ell)$. We apply this approach to known problems. For well-studied problems, like VERTEX COVER and GRAPH $q$-COLORING, we obtain running times that are comparable to those of the best known problem-specific algorithms. For an exotic problem from bioinformatics, called DISPLAYGRAPH, this approach improves the known algorithm parameterized by treewidth.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is a $k$-prime product distance graph if its vertices can be labeled with distinct integers such that for any two adjacent vertices, the difference of their labels is the product of at most $k$ primes. A graph has prime product number $ppn(G)=k$ if it is a $k$-prime product graph but not a $(k-1)$-prime product graph. Similarly, $G$ is a prime $k$th-power graph (respectively, strict prime $k$th-power graph) if its vertices can be labeled with distinct integers such that for any two adjacent vertices, the difference of their labels is the $j$th power of a prime, for $j \leq k$ (respectively, the $k$th power of a prime exactly). We prove that $ppn(K_n) = \lceil \log_2(n)\rceil - 1$, and for a nonempty $k$-chromatic graph $G$, $ppn(G) = \lceil \log_2(k)\rceil - 1$ or $ppn(G) = \lceil \log_2(k)\rceil$. We determine $ppn(G)$ for all complete bipartite, 3-partite, and 4-partite graphs. We prove that $K_n$ is a prime $k$th-power graph if and only if $n < 7$, and we determine conditions on cycles and outerplanar graphs $G$ for which $G$ is a strict prime $k$th-power graph. We find connections between prime product and prime power distance graphs and the Twin Prime Conjecture, the Green-Tao Theorem, and Fermat's Last Theorem.

Abstract:Chung and Graham considered the problem of minimizing the number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph containing all $n$-vertex trees as a subgraph. They showed that such a graph has at least $\frac{1}{2}n \log{n}$ edges. In this note, we improve this lower estimate to $n \log{n}$.
