Abstract:Recent studies show interest in materials with asymmetric friction forces. We investigate terminal motion of a solid body with circular contact area. We assume that friction forces are asymmetric orthotropic. Two cases of pressure distribution are analyzed: Hertz and Boussinesq laws. Equations for friction force and moment are formulated and solved for these cases. Numer- ical results show significant impact of the asymmetry of friction on the motion. Our results can be used for more accurate prediction of contact behavior of bodies made from new materials with asymmetric surface textures.

Abstract:Investigated are sliding motions of a rigid body on a harmonically driven inclined plane. Coulomb’s law with a random coefficient of friction is assumed. The mean sliding velocity in a steady state of deterministic motions is taken as a measure to compare deterministic with stochastic behavior. Abstract:The two-dimensional motion of an object on a moving rough horizontal plane is investigated. Two cases are studied: the plane having a translational acceleration, and a rotating plane. For the first case, the motions of a point particle and a sphere are studied, and it is shown that the solution to the latter problem can be expressed in terms of the solution to the former one. Examples of constant acceleration and periodic acceleration along a fixed line, and specifically sinusoidal acceleration along a fixed line, are studied in more detail. Also a situation is investigated where the friction is anisotropic, that is the friction coefficient depends on the direction of the velocity. In this situation, there may be stick-slip motions, and these are investigated in detail. For the second case, the motion of a point particle on a rough turntable is investigated.

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding paths of shortest transit time between two points (popularly known as Brachistochrone) for cylinders with off-centered center of mass, rolling down without slip, subject solely to the force of gravity. This problem is set up using principles of classical rigid body dynamics and the desired path function is solved for numerically using the method of discrete calculus of variations. We discover a distinct array of brachistochrone trajectories for off-centered cylinders, demonstrate a critical dependence of such paths on the initial location and orientation of cylinders' centers of mass and bring new insights into the family of brachistochrone problems and solutions.

Friction in Rolling a Cylinder on or Under a Viscoelastic Substrate with Adhesion

Abstract:In classical experiments, it has been found that a rigid cylinder can roll both on and under an inclined rubber plane with a friction force that depends on a power law of velocity, independent of the sign of the normal force. Further, contact area increases significantly with velocity with a related power law. We try to model qualitatively these experiments with a numerical boundary element solution with a standard linear solid and we find for sufficiently large Maugis–Tabor parameter qualitative agreement with experiments. However, friction force increases linearly with velocity at low velocities (like in the case with no adhesive hysteresis) and then decays at large speeds. Quantitative agreement with the Persson–Brener theory of crack propagation is found for the two power law regimes, but when Maugis–Tabor parameter is small, the cut-off stress in Persson–Brener theory depends on all the other dimensionless parameters of the problem.

Abstract:The key objective of the presented study was to use a commercially feasible and scalable approach to modifying surfaces to reduce friction. In an industrial setting, surface grinding is commercially viable and scalable as compared to other surface modifying processes like laser surface texturing, plasma, or ion beam milling. Frictional force plots are generated from the lubricated contact interface between a flat-faced aluminum pin and a reciprocating stainless steel countersurface driven by a scotch yoke follower mechanism. Using a surface grinder and selecting coated abrasive sheets, different stainless steel surface specimens, classified as P320, P1200, and mirror were prepared and tested in this study. The frictional force encountered by the pin was recorded using a data acquisition system at discrete intervals in the reciprocating path and averaged along the sliding cycles. The shape of the frictional force plots thus generated were found to be different from each other. Various mechanisms of friction prevalent at the contact were presumed to influence the shape of these frictional plots. These mechanisms were tested by varying the sliding speeds, lubricating oil viscosities, and using tribofilm-forming additives. We used Group 1 base oil of two different viscosities in our tests. At lower speeds, the frictional force plot for the mirror-finished surface seemed to conform to the Stribeck curve, while in the same scale of reference, the P1200 surface had a force plot that was nearly flat and of very low magnitude. At the contact interface, there seemed to be a fine balance existing between adhesion and abrasion phenomena, while oil retention was promoted to achieve extremely low sliding friction.
Planar Friction Modelling with LuGre Dynamics and Limit Surfaces

Abstract:During planar motion, contact surfaces exhibit a coupling between tangential and rotational friction forces. This paper proposes planar friction models grounded in the LuGre model and limit surface theory. First, distributed planar extended state models are proposed and the Elasto-Plastic model is extended for multi-dimensional friction. Subsequently, we derive a reduced planar friction model, coupled with a pre-calculated limit surface, that offers reduced computational cost. The limit surface approximation through an ellipsoid is discussed. The properties of the planar friction models are assessed in various simulations, demonstrating that the reduced planar friction model achieves comparable performance to the distributed model while exhibiting ~80 times lower computational cost.

Abstract:In this paper, the nonsmooth dynamics of two contacting rigid bodies is analysed in the presence of dry friction. In three dimensions, slipping can occur in continuously many directions. Then, the Coulomb friction model leads to a system of differential equations, which has a codimension-2 discontinuity set in the phase space. The new theory of extended Filippov systems is applied to analyse the dynamics of a rigid body moving on a fixed rigid plane to explore the possible transitions between the slipping and rolling behaviour. The paper focuses on finding the so-called limit directions of the slipping equations at the discontinuity. This leads to a complete qualitative description of the possible scenarios of the dynamics in the vicinity of the discontinuity. It is shown that the new approach consistently extends the information provided from the static friction force of the rolling behaviour. The methods are demonstrated on an application example.

Abstract:Due to the friction moment, there is an angular displacement when two flat rough surfaces come to sliding contact or quasi sliding contact. A 2-DOF inclined rough surface contact model is presented in this work, and the effects of the angular displacement on the friction coefficient, interfacial forces and moments are investigated. The numerical simulations show that both interfacial forces and moments increase with the increasing inclined angle, while the friction coefficient decreases instead. In addition, for a given sliding mass block system, the effects of the friction coefficient and the base sliding speed on the stability of the sliding contact are also discussed. The simulations indicate that a larger friction coefficient and a higher base sliding speed tend to turn over the mass block during the sliding.
Non-monotonic frictional behavior in the lubricated sliding of soft patterned surfaces

Abstract:We study the lubricated contact of sliding soft surfaces that are locally patterned but globally cylindrical, held together under an external normal force. The local patterns represent either naturally occurring surface roughness or engineered surface textures. Three dimensionless parameters govern the system: a speed, and the amplitude and wavelength of the pattern. Using numerical solutions of the Reynolds lubrication equation, we investigate the effects of these dimensionless parameters on key variables such as contact pressure and the coefficient of friction of the lubricated system. For small roughness amplitudes, the coefficient of friction increases with roughness. However, our findings reveal that increasing surface roughness beyond a critical value can decrease the friction coefficient, a result that contradicts conventional intuition and classical studies on the lubrication of rigid surfaces. For very large roughness amplitudes, we show that the coefficient of friction drops even below the corresponding smooth case. We support these observations with a combination of perturbation theory and physical arguments, identifying scaling laws for large and small speeds, and for large and small roughness amplitudes. This study provides a quantitative understanding of friction in the contact of soft, wet objects and lays theoretical foundations for incorporating the friction coefficient into haptic feedback systems in soft robotics and haptic engineering.

Abstract:The existence of a wheel–rail friction coefficient that depends on the slip velocity has been associated in the literature with important railway problems like the curving squeal and certain corrugation problems in rails. Rolling contact models that take into account this effect were carried out through the so-called Exact Theories adopting an exact elastic model of the solids in contact, and Simplified Theories which assume simplified elastic models such as Winkler. The former ones, based on Kalker’s Variational Theory, give rise to numerical problems; the latter ones need to adopt hypotheses that significantly deviate from actual conditions, leading to unrealistic solutions of the contact problem. In this paper, a methodology based on Kalker’s Variational Theory is presented, in which a local slip velocity-dependent friction law is considered. A formulation to get steady-state conditions of rolling contact by means of regularisation of the Coulomb’s law is proposed. The model allows establishing relationships in order to estimate the global properties (creepage velocities vs. total longitudinal forces) through local properties (local slip velocity vs. coefficient of friction) or vice versa. The proposed model shows a good agreement with experimental tests while solving the numerical problems previously mentioned.

Abstract:The onset of frictional motion couples complex spatiotemporal dynamics of discrete contacts with different orders of magnitude at time and length scales. In order to reveal how these individual scales affect the frictional sliding, we establish a 2D multiscale spring-block model for the frictional sliding at an elastic slider-rigid interface. In this model, the rupture of frictional interface is described by three different types of locally microscopic motion: pinned, sliding and dislocated states. By using realistic boundary conditions, our numerical results can precisely reproduce the loading curves found in previous experiments. The precursor events, corresponding to a discrete sequence of rapid crack-like fronts propagating partially in the contact zone, can also be shown in our simulation. From the analysis of the microscopic motion, we characterize the evolution of the real contact area and the corresponding interface motion at the mesoscale level, and show that the evolution corresponds to four distinct and inter-related phases: detachment, fast and slow slip motion, as well as the rest of slip. These mesoscale behaviors are completely consistent with the existing experimental results and their physical mechanisms can be explained by the detailed information of the numerical simulation. The study is established on a bottom-up multiscale model which provides a comprehensive picture about the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of frictional sliding.

Abstract:The paper presents an experimental and simulative study on anisotropic dry friction . Friction force components tangential and normal to sliding velocity are measured for the corrugated cardboard-felt frictional pair. Six different curves with two-fold symmetry are analysed in terms of modelling anisotropic friction. Next, the parameters of the analysed curves are identified based on the experimental results. Friction hodograph is best described by the Gielis' curve and the superellipse, whereas the ellipse seems to be the worst choice. The sliding potential is described best by the oval. It is shown that modelling of the sliding potential can be crucial in capturing the dynamics of the system and the superelliptical sliding rule can lead to qualitatively different results.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical approach to simulate sliding friction between engineering surfaces with 3D roughness in point contacts. The numerical approach is developed on the basis of the deterministic solutions of mixed lubrication, which is able to predict the locations where the asperity contacts occur, and the pressure distribution over both lubrication and contact areas. If the friction coefficients over the contacting asperities have been determined, total friction force between the surfaces can be calculated by summing up the two components, i.e., the boundary friction contributed by contacting asperities and the shear stress in hydrodynamic regions. The fi-ictions from asperity contact were determined in terms of a limiting shear stress or shearstrength of boundary, films while the fluid shear stress in the lubrication areas was calculated using different rheology models for the lubricant, in order to find which one would be more reliable in predicting fluid tractions. The simulations covered the entire lubrication, regime, including full-film Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL), mixed lubrication, and boundary lubrication. The results, when being plotted as a function of sliding velocity, give a Stribeck-type friction curve. This provides an opportunity to study friction change during the transition of lubrication conditions and to compare friction performance oil different rough surpces, which is of great value in engineering practice. Experiments were conducted on a commercial test device-universal material tester (UMT) to measure friction at a fixed load but different sliding velocities in reciprocal or rotary motions. The results also give rise to the Stribeck friction curvesfor different rough surfaces, which are to be compared with the results from simulations. The samples were prepared with typical machined surfaces in different roughness heights and textures, and in point contacts with steel ball. Results show that there is a general agreement between the experiments and simulations. It is found that surface features, such as roughness amplitude and patterns, may have a significant effect on the critical speed of transition firom hydrodynamic to mixed lubrication. It? the regime of mixed lubrication, rougher samples would give rise to a higherfiriction if the operation conditions are the same.
Relationship Between the Real Contact Area and Contact Force in Pre-Sliding Regime

Abstract:The pre-sliding regime is typically neglected in the dynamic modelling of mechanical systems. However, the change in contact state caused by static friction may decrease positional accuracy and control precision. To investigate the relationship between contact status and contact force in pre-sliding friction, an optical experimental method is presented in this paper. With this method, the real contact state at the interface of a transparent material can be observed based on the total reflection principle of light by using an image processing technique. A novel setup, which includes a pair of rectangular trapezoidal blocks, is proposed to solve the challenging issue of accurately applying different tangential and normal forces to the contact interface. The improved Otsu's method is used for measurement. Through an experimental study performed on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the quantity of contact asperities is proven to be the dominant factor that affects the real contact area. The relationship between the real contact area and the contact force in the pre-sliding regime is studied, and the distribution of static friction at the contact interface is qualitatively discussed. New phenomena in which the real contact area expands along with increasing static friction are identified. The aforementioned relationship is approximately linear at the contact interface under a constant normal pressure, and the distribution of friction stress decreases from the leading edge to the trailing edge.

Abstract:In Part 1 of the present paper a minimum principle for the Coulomb-Amontons law of friction is derived. This minimum principle is uniform in the sense that no distinction is made between the slip and the no-slip conditions. The principle is applied to the two-dimensional contact problem in which the normal pressure is Hertzian. After discretization, the principle leads to a linear programming problem in the case of steady rolling as considered by Carter [1] and Bentall and Johnson [2]. Good agreement is found with these authors, and the force-creepage law for elastically dissimilar cylinders has been calculated completely. In the case of the nonsteady contact problem, which is treated in Part 2 and in which the traction evolves under the influence of a gross motion and loading program, the principle leads to a time sequence of linear programming problems. Such problems under several restrictions have been treated before by Kalker [3–5], without the aid of minimization techniques. In the present paper these restrictions are all removed. Numerical results are presented.
Effects of Surface Roughness on Sliding Friction in Lubricated-Point Contacts: Experimental and Numerical Studies

Abstract:The objective of the present work is to investigate experimentally and numerically the influences of surface roughness, produced by typical machining processes, on friction performances in lubricated-point contacts. Prior to the full experimental investigation, a series of tests had been conducted to examine the experimental errors, resulting from repeated tests on the same specimen but at different tracks, with different amounts of lubricant supply, or after the sample reinstallation. Then, the effects of amplitude and texture of surface roughness on friction behavior are investigated in rotational and reciprocal-mode tests, respectively The measured friction, averaged over the repeated tests and plotted as a function of Sliding Speed, shows Stribeck-type curves, which manifest the transition from full-film, mixed, to boundary lubrication. Results show that the roughness amplitude imposes a strong influence on the magnificence of friction and the route of lubrication transition. It is also observed that transverse roughness would give rise to a smaller friction coefficient than the longitudinal. one under the same operating conditions. Moreover, the deterministic numerical solution of mixed lubrication has been extended to evaluate friction between rough surfaces over a wide range of lubrication regimes. The numerical simulation results are compared and agree very well with experiments.
Stochastic motion under nonlinear friction representing shear thinning

Abstract:We study stochastic motion under a nonlinear frictional force that levels off with increasing velocity. Specifically, our frictional force is of the so-called Coulomb-tanh type. At small speed, it increases approximately linearly with velocity, while at large speed it approaches a constant magnitude, similarly to solid (dry, Coulomb) friction. In one spatial dimension, a formal analogy between the associated Fokker-Planck equation and the Schrödinger equation for a quantum-mechanical oscillator in a nonharmonic Pöschl-Teller potential is revealed. Then, the stationary velocity statistics can be treated analytically. From such analytical considerations, we determine associated diffusion coefficients, which we confirm by agent-based simulations. Moreover, from such simulations and from numerically solving the associated Fokker-Planck equation, we find that the spatial distribution function, starting from an initial Gaussian shape, develops tails that appear exponential at intermediate time scales. At small magnitudes of stochastic driving, the velocity distribution resembles the case of linear friction, while at large magnitudes it rather approaches the case of solid (dry, Coulomb) friction. The same is true for diffusion coefficients. In a certain sense, thus interpolating between the two extreme cases of linear friction and solid (dry, Coulomb) friction, our approach should be useful to describe several cases of practical relevance. For instance, a reduced increase in friction with increasing relative speed is typical of shear-thinning behavior. Therefore, driven motion in shear-thinning environments is one specific example to which our description may be applied.

Abstract:We study the effect of viscoelastic dynamics on the frictional properties of a (mean field) spring-block system pulled on a rough surface by an external drive. When the drive moves at constant velocity V, two dynamical regimes are observed: at fast driving, above a critical threshold Vc, the system slides at the drive velocity and displays a friction force with velocity weakening. Below Vc the steady sliding becomes unstable and a stick-slip regime sets in. In the slide-hold-slide driving protocol, a peak of the friction force appears after the hold time and its amplitude increases with the hold duration. These observations are consistent with the frictional force encoded phenomenologically in the rate-and-state equations. Our model gives a microscopical basis for such macroscopic description.
