Abstract:There are several standard procedures used to create new sequences from a given sequence or from a given pair of sequences. In this paper I discuss the most popular of these procedures. For each procedure, I give a definition and provide examples based on three famous sequences: the natural numbers, the prime numbers and the Fibonacci numbers. I also add my thoughts on what makes a sequence interesting. My goal is to help my readers invent new sequences, differentiate interesting sequences from boring ones, and better understand sequences they encounter.

Abstract:The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

Abstract:In his July 1974 Scientific American column, Martin Gardner mentioned the Handbook of Integer Sequences, which then contained 2372 sequences. Today the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (the OEIS) contains 140000 sequences. This paper discusses eight of them, suggested by the theme of the Eighth Gathering For Gardner: they are all infinite, and all 'ateful in one way or another. Each one is connected with an unsolved problem. The sequences are related to: hateful numbers, Angelini's 1995 puzzle, the persistence of a number, Alekseyev's 123 sequence, the curling number conjecture, Quet's prime-generating recurrence, the traveling salesman's problem, and the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:In this study, several interesting iterative sequences were investigated. First, we define the iterative sequences. We fix function f(n). An iterative sequence starts with a natural number n, and calculates the sequence f(n),f(f(n)), ...f(f(f(f(n)))),... We then search for interesting features in this sequence. We study Kaprekar's routine, the digit factorial process, and the digit power process. The authors presented new variants of Kaprekar's routine.

Automatic Album Sequencing

Abstract:Album sequencing is a critical part of the album production process. Recently, a data-driven approach was proposed that sequences general collections of independent media by extracting the narrative essence of the items in the collections. While this approach implies an album sequencing technique, it is not widely accessible to a less technical audience, requiring advanced knowledge of machine learning techniques to use. To address this, we introduce a new user-friendly web-based tool that allows a less technical audience to upload music tracks, execute this technique in one click, and subsequently presents the result in a clean visualization to the user. To both increase the number of templates available to the user and address shortcomings of previous work, we also introduce a new direct transformer-based album sequencing method. We find that our more direct method outperforms a random baseline but does not reach the same performance as the narrative essence approach. Both methods are included in our web-based user interface, and this -- alongside a full copy of our implementation -- is publicly available at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://github.com/dylanashley/automatic-album-sequencing" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>

Abstract:Integer sequences are of central importance to the modeling of concepts admitting complete finitary descriptions. We introduce a novel view on the learning of such concepts and lay down a set of benchmarking tasks aimed at conceptual understanding by machine learning models. These tasks indirectly assess model ability to abstract, and challenge them to reason both interpolatively and extrapolatively from the knowledge gained by observing representative examples. To further aid research in knowledge representation and reasoning, we present FACT, the Finitary Abstraction Comprehension Toolkit. The toolkit surrounds a large dataset of integer sequences comprising both organic and synthetic entries, a library for data pre-processing and generation, a set of model performance evaluation tools, and a collection of baseline model implementations, enabling the making of the future advancements with ease.

Abstract:DNA sequences are fundamental for encoding genetic information. The genetic information may not only be understood by symbolic sequences but also from the hidden signals inside the sequences. The symbolic sequences need to be transformed into numerical sequences so the hidden signals can be revealed by signal processing techniques. All current transformation methods encode DNA sequences into numerical values of the same length. These representations have limitations in the applications of genomic signal compression, encryption, and steganography. We propose an integer chaos game representation (iCGR) of DNA sequences and a lossless encoding method DNA sequences by the iCGR. In the iCGR method, a DNA sequence is represented by the iterated function of the nucleotides and their positions in the sequence. Then the DNA sequence can be uniquely encoded and recovered using three integers from iCGR. One integer is the sequence length and the other two integers represent the accumulated distributions of nucleotides in the sequence. The integer encoding scheme can compress a DNA sequence by 2 bits per nucleotide. The integer representation of DNA sequences provides a prospective tool for sequence compression, encryption, and steganography. Abstract:This article investigates integer sequences that partition the sequence into blocks of various lengths - irregular arrays. The main result of the article is explicit formulas for numbering of irregular arrays. A generalization of Cantor diagonal method is proposed. We also define and describe intra-block permutations of natural numbers. Generalizations of reluctant sequences are introduced, namely generalized reluctant sequences and generalized reverse reluctant sequences. Explicit formulas are presented for these sequences. The article provides numerous examples to illustrate all statements.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel model for analyzing and determining the required sequencing coverage in DNA-based data storage, focusing on combinatorial DNA encoding. We explore the application of the coupon collector model for combinatorial-letter reconstruction, post-sequencing, which ensure efficient data retrieval and error reduction. We use a Markov Chain model to compute the probability of error-free reconstruction. We develop theoretical bounds on the decoding probability and use empirical simulations to validate these bounds. The work contributes to the understanding of sequencing coverage in DNA-based data storage, offering insights into decoding complexity, error correction, and sequence reconstruction. We provide a Python package that takes the code design and other message parameters as input, and then computes the required read coverage to guarantee reconstruction at a given desired confidence.

Abstract:We present a self-learning approach for synthesizing programs from integer sequences. Our method relies on a tree search guided by a learned policy. Our system is tested on the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. There, it discovers, on its own, solutions for 27987 sequences starting from basic operators and without human-written training examples.

Abstract:DNA based storage systems received attention by many researchers. This includes archival and re-writable random access DNA based storage systems. In this work, we have developed an efficient technique to encode the data into DNA sequence by using non-linear families of ternary codes. In particular, we proposes an algorithm to encode data into DNA with high information storage density and better error correction using a sub code of Golay code. Theoretically, 115 exabytes (EB) data can be stored in one gram of DNA by our method.

Abstract:As a report of a teaching experience, we analyse Haskell programs computing two integer sequences: the Hamming sequence and the Ulam sequence. For both of them, we investigate two strategies of computation: the first is based on filtering out those natural numbers that do not belong to the sequence, whereas the second is based on the direct generation of num- bers that belong to the sequence. Advocating cross-fertilisation among ideas emerging when programming in different programming paradigms, in the background, we sketch out some considerations about corresponding C programs solving the same two problems.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper we examine two ways of coding sequences in arithmetical theories. We investigate under what conditions they work. To be more precise, we study the creation of objects of a data-type that we call ur-strings, roughly sequences where the components are ordered but where we do not have an explicitly given projection function. First, we have a brief look at the beta-function which was already carefully studied by Emil Jeřábek. We study in detail our two target constructions. These constructions both employ theories of strings. The first is based on Smullyan coding and the second on the representation of binary strings in the special linear monoid of the non-negative part of discretely ordered commutative rings as introduced by Markov.

Abstract:We discuss an interesting sequence defined recursively; namely, sequence A105774 from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, and study some of its properties. Our main tools are Fibonacci representation, finite automata, and the Walnut theorem-prover. We also prove two new results about synchronized sequences.

Abstract:We introduce a self-learning algorithm for synthesizing programs that provide explanations for OEIS sequences. The algorithm starts from scratch initially generating programs at random. Then it runs many iterations of a self-learning loop that interleaves (i) training neural machine translation to learn the correspondence between sequences and the programs discovered so far, and (ii) proposing many new programs for each OEIS sequence by the trained neural machine translator. The algorithm discovers on its own programs for more than 78000 OEIS sequences, sometimes developing unusual programming methods. We analyze its behavior and the invented programs in several experiments.

Abstract:We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

Abstract:Ron Graham's Sequence is a surprising bijection from non-negative integers to non-negative, non-prime integers that was introduced by Ron Graham in the June 1986 "Problems" column of $\textit{Mathematics Magazine}$, and which later appeared in Problem A2 of the 2013 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. We describe some properties of this function, give an algorithm for computing its values in pseudo-polynomial time, and prove a 22 year-old conjecture about an upper bound for the function.
