Abstract:We give a quasi-isometric characterization of cacti, which is similar to Manning's characterization of quasi-trees by the bottleneck property. We also give another quasi-isometric characterization of cacti using fat theta curves.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the rough geometric feature description of "cactus graphs". Specifically, the authors aim to present a quasi - isometric feature description method, which can identify which geometric metric spaces can be regarded as quasi - isometric to "cactus graphs". A cactus graph is a special graph structure in which any two cycles have at most one intersection point. Such graphs play an important role in graph theory, networks, computer science, and geometric group theory. For example, Dinitz - Karzanov - Lomonosov showed a method of encoding the minimum cut sets of a graph through cactus graphs, which has algorithmic application value in improving the edge connectivity of the graph. The main contribution of the paper lies in providing a new quasi - isometric condition, namely condition (♯), to determine whether a geometric metric space is quasi - isometric to a cactus graph. This condition is similar to the bottleneck property previously proposed by Manning for tree structures. In addition, the paper also proposes another quasi - isometric feature description method using fat theta curves. These achievements not only deepen the understanding of cactus graphs but also help to extend the theory of minor - free graphs to the case of q - fat minor - free graphs. The latter is geometrically invariant, while the former is not. Through these studies, the authors hope to confirm a conjecture of Georgakopoulos - Papasoglu, that is, if a graph has no q - fat H - minor (for some q), then it is actually quasi - isometric to a graph without H - minor. If this conjecture holds, it will show that the profound theory of minor - free graphs can be extended to the case of fat - minor - free graphs, which is also geometrically meaningful.
