Abstract:The goal of this paper is to establish a new and efficient characterization of quasi-homogeneous isolated singularities of free curves and nearly free curves $C$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The criterion will be in terms of the first syzygy matrix associated with the Jacobian ideal of $f$ where $f=0$ is the equation of the plane curve $C$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve
The goal of this paper is to establish a new and efficient method for characterizing quasi - homogeneous singularities, especially for the isolated singularities of free curves and nearly free curves on the complex projective plane \( \mathbb{P}^2 \). Specifically, the authors hope to use the first syzygy matrix of the Jacobian ideal to characterize whether these singularities are quasi - homogeneous.
### Background and motivation
In algebraic geometry, determining whether a singularity is quasi - homogeneous is an important problem. Quasi - homogeneous singularities have good properties, for example, their Milnor number and Tjurina number are equal. However, existing methods usually require information about local coordinates and local equations, which can be very complicated in practical applications, especially when dealing with singularities of high multiplicity.
### Main contributions
1. **New characterization**: The authors propose a new characterization method based on the first syzygy matrix of the Jacobian ideal. This method is not only simple and easy to implement, but also can be applied globally to the entire Jacobian singular scheme, not just locally.
2. **Efficiency**: By using the first syzygy matrix, it is easy to use symbolic computation software (such as Macaulay 2 or Singular) to check whether a singularity is quasi - homogeneous. This makes the method very practical in practical applications.
3. **Theoretical significance**: This method not only provides a new perspective for studying the singularities of plane curves, but also provides the possibility for further research on other types of singularities. For example, for 3 - syzygy curves, the authors speculate that similar conclusions also hold.
### Main results
The main results of the paper are as follows:
- **Theorem 1.1**: Let \( C = V(f)\subset \mathbb{P}^2 \) be a free curve or a nearly free curve, with degree \( d>2r \) or \( d\geq 2r \), where \( r \) is the minimum degree of the Jacobian syzygy. Let \( M_f \) be the first syzygy matrix of the Jacobian ideal \( J_f \). Then a singularity \( p\in \text{Sing}(C) \) is quasi - homogeneous if and only if \( \text{rank}(M_f(p))\geq 1 \).
### Method overview
- **Polarization map**: The authors consider the polarization map \( \nabla_f:\mathbb{P}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^2 \) and the closure \( S_f \) of its image, that is, the Blow - up of the Jacobian scheme. This surface is contained in a sub - variety \( Z_f \) determined by the column vectors of \( M_f \).
- **Equivalent conditions for quasi - homogeneity**: The quasi - homogeneity of a singularity is equivalent to the irreducibility of \( Z_f \). Specifically, if the rank of \( M_f \) is zero at a certain singularity, then this singularity is not quasi - homogeneous.
### Conclusion
This paper provides a new and efficient method for determining whether the singularities of free curves and nearly free curves are quasi - homogeneous. This method not only simplifies the existing discrimination methods, but also provides new ideas for studying other types of singularities.
