Abstract:Motivated by a problem in graph theory, this article introduces an algebra called the balanced algebra. This algebra is defined by generators and relations, and the main goal is to find a minimal set of relations for it.

Abstract:Let X be a finite set and let k be a commutative ring. We consider the k-algebra of the monoid of all relations on X, modulo the ideal generated by the relations factorizing through a set of cardinality strictly smaller than Card(X), called inessential relations. This quotient is called the essential algebra associated to X. We then define a suitable nilpotent ideal of the essential algebra and describe completely the structure of the corresponding quotient, a product of matrix algebras over suitable group algebras. In particular, we obtain a description of the Jacobson radical and of all the simple modules for the essential algebra.

Relational Algebraic Approach to the Real Numbers: The Least-Upper-Bound Property

Abstract:In this paper we continue the investigation of a real number object, i.e., an object representing the real numbers, in categories of relations. Our axiomatization is based on a relation algebraic version of Tarski's axioms of the real numbers. It was already shown that the addition of such an object forms a dense, linear ordered abelian group. In the current paper we will focus on the least-upper-bound property of such an object.

Abstract:This paper gives a key definition, for a new approach to dessins and algebraic numbers. The distant goal is to construct from each dessin $D$ an algebraic number $\eta_D$, in a systematic and useful way. The algebra of balanced dessins is generated by formal sums $\psi_D$ of dessins, intended to be intermediate between $D$ and $\eta_D$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new axiomatic system that is a minimal axiomatization of Boolean algebras. Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Finally, a new method to prove equivalent relations in a Boolean algebra is also given.

Abstract:Given an initial family of sets, we may take unions, intersections and complements of the sets contained in this family in order to form a new collection of sets; our construction process is done recursively until we obtain the last family. Problems encountered in this research include the minimum number of steps required to arrive to the last family as well as a characterization of that last family; we solve all those problems. We also define a class of simple families ($n$-minimal constructible) and we analyze the relationships between partitions and separability (our new concept) that lead to interesting results such as finding families based on partitions that generate finite algebras. We prove a number of new results about $n$-minimal constructible families; one major result is that every finite algebra of sets has a generating family which is $n$-minimal constructible for all natural $n$ and we compute the minimum number of steps required to generate an algebra. Another interesting result is a connection between this construction process and Baire's Theorem. This work has a number of possible applications, particularly in the fields of economics and computer science.

Abstract:A signed graph is a graph with a function that assigns a label of positive or negative to each edge. The sign of a circle is the product of the signs of its edges; a graph is balanced if all of its circles are positive. A set of edges whose negation yields a balanced graph is a negation set. Results: tests to determine whether a negation set is minimal, minimum, or the unique minimum; any two disjoint negation sets must be bipartite; two classes of graphs are shown to have bipartite negation sets (in general, existence is an unsolved problem); I give an algorithm which finds a maximum family of disjoint negation sets that includes a given negation set.

Abstract:Many important computational structures involve an intricate interplay between algebraic features (given by operations on the underlying set) and relational features (taking account of notions such as order or distance). This paper investigates algebras over relational structures axiomatized by an infinitary Horn theory, which subsume, for example, partial algebras, various incarnations of ordered algebras, quantitative algebras introduced by Mardare, Panangaden, and Plotkin, and their recent extension to generalized metric spaces and lifted algebraic signatures by Mio, Sarkis, and Vignudelli. To this end, we develop the notion of clustered equation, which is inspired by Mardare et al.'s basic conditional equations in the theory of quantitative algebras, at the level of generality of arbitrary relational structures, and we prove that it is equivalent to an abstract categorical form of equation earlier introduced by Milius and Urbat. Our main results are a family of Birkhoff-type variety theorems (classifying the expressive power of clustered equations) and an exactness theorem (classifying abstract equations by a congruence property).

The Algebras for Automatic Relations

Abstract:We introduce "synchronous algebras", an algebraic structure tailored to recognize automatic relations (aka. synchronous relations, or regular relations). They are the equivalent of monoids for regular languages, however they conceptually differ in two points: first, they are typed and second, they are equipped with a dependency relation expressing constraints between elements of different types. The interest of the proposed definition is that it allows to lift, in an effective way, pseudovarieties of regular languages to that of synchronous relations, and we show how algebraic characterizations of pseudovarieties of regular languages can be lifted to the pseudovarieties of synchronous relations that they induce. A typical example of such a pseudovariety is the class of "group relations", defined as the relations recognized by finite-state synchronous permutation automata. In order to prove this result, we adapt two pillars of algebraic language to synchronous algebras: (a) any relation admits a syntactic synchronous algebra recognizing it, and moreover, the relation is synchronous if, and only if, its syntactic algebra is finite and (b) classes of synchronous relations with desirable closure properties (i.e. pseudovarieties) correspond to pseudovarieties of synchronous algebras.

Abstract:In this paper we study the algebra of graph invariants, focusing mainly on the invariants of simple graphs. All other invariants, such as sorted eigenvalues, degree sequences and canonical permutations, belong to this algebra. In fact, every graph invariant is a linear combination of the basic graph invariants which we study in this paper. To prove that two graphs are isomorphic, a number of basic invariants are required, which are called separator invariants. The minimal set of separator invariants is also the minimal basic generator set for the algebra of graph invariants. We find lower and upper bounds for the minimal number of generator/separator invariants needed for proving graph isomorphism. Finally we find a sufficient condition for Ulam's conjecture to be true based on Redfield's enumeration formula.

Abstract:A graph is a split graph if its vertex set can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. A split graph is unbalanced if there exist two such partitions that are distinct. Cheng, Collins and Trenk (2016), discovered the following interesting counting fact: unlabeled, unbalanced split graphs on $n$ vertices can be placed into a bijection with all unlabeled split graphs on $n-1$ or fewer vertices. In this paper we translate these concepts and the theorem to different combinatorial settings: minimal set covers, bipartite graphs with a distinguished block and posets of height one.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a particular class of matrices. We study the concept of a matrix to be balanced. We study some properties of this concept in the context of matrix operations. We examine the behaviour of various matrix statistics in this setting. The crux will be to understanding the determinants and the eigen-values of balanced matrices. It turns out that there does exist a direct communication among the leading entry, the trace, determinants and, hence, the eigen-values of these matrices of order $2\times 2$. These matrices have an interesting property that enables us to predict their quadratic forms, even without knowing their entries but given their spectrum.

A Relation Algebra for Term Rewriting: A differential approach to sequential reduction (Revised Version)

Abstract:Recently, Gavazzo has developed a relational theory of symbolic manipulation, that allows to study syntax-based rewriting systems without relying on specific notions of syntax. This theory was obtained by extending the algebra of relations with syntax-inspired operators. Within the algebras thus obtained, it is possible to encode notions of parallel and full reduction for first-order rewriting systems, as well as to prove nontrivial properties about them in an algebraic and syntax-independent fashion. Sequential reduction, however, was not explored, but it was conjectured that it could be studied through a differential relational theory of rewriting. This manuscript proves the above conjecture by defining differential algebras of term relations, viz. algebras of term relations extended with novel operators inspired by the theory of functor derivatives. We give a set of axioms and rules for such operators and show that the resulting theory is expressive enough to define notions of parallel, full, and sequential reduction. We prove fundamental results relating all these notions in a purely algebraic and syntax-independent way, and showcase the effectiveness of our theory by proving the soundness of a proof technique for weak confluence akin to the so-called Critical Pair Lemma.

The algebra of supernatural matrices

Abstract:The algebra of supernatural matrices is a key example in the theory of locally finite central simple algebras, which studied in a previous paper of the authors (\cite{Local}). It is also a stand-alone object admits a rich study and various connections to other fields. The goal of this paper is to expose some new information about supernatural matrices, mainly in terms of the "inner" ways to identify such algebras, and their appearance as minimal solutions to equations of the form $M_n(A)\cong A$. Viewing a natural representation of this algebra, we show that supernatural matrices generalize both McCrimmon's deep matrices algebra and $m$-petal Leavitt path algebra. We also study their simple representations.

Abstract:Extended affine root systems appear as the root systems of extended affine Lie algebras. A subclass of extended affine root systems, whose elements are called ``minimal" turns out to be of special interest mostly because of the geometric properties of their Weyl groups; they possess the so-called ``presentation by conjugation". In this work, we characterize minimal extended affine root systems in terms of ``minimal reflectable bases" which resembles the concept of the ``base" for finite and affine root systems. As an application, we construct elliptic Lie algebras by means of Serre's type generators and relations.

We continue to investigate Relational lattice properties with emphasis onto axiomatic definition. Abstract:This paper studies how to use relation algebras, which are useful for high-level specification and verification, for proving the correctness of lower-level array-based implementations of algorithms. We give a simple relation-algebraic semantics of read and write operations on associative arrays. The array operations seamlessly integrate with assignments in computation models supporting while-programs. As a result, relation algebras can be used for verifying programs with associative arrays. We verify the correctness of an array-based implementation of disjoint-set forests using the union-by-rank strategy and find operations with path compression, path splitting and path halving. All results are formally proved in Isabelle/HOL. This paper is an extended version of [1].

Abstract:Perfect ideals of grade 3 can be classified based on algebra structures on their minimal free resolutions. The classification is incomplete in the sense that it remains open which of the possible algebra structures actually occur; this realizability question was formally posed by Avramov in 2012. Of five classes of algebra structures, the realizability question has been answered for one class. In this work, we answer the realizability question for two classes and contribute towards an answer for a third.

Abstract:We construct a Hopf algebra on integer binary relations that contains under the same roof several well-known Hopf algebras related to the permutahedra and the associahedra: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra on permutations, the Loday-Ronco algebra on planar binary trees, and the Chapoton algebras on ordered partitions and on Schröder trees. We also derive from our construction new Hopf structures on intervals of the weak order on permutations and of the Tamari order on binary trees.

Abstract:In [{Structural properties and decomposition of linear balanced matrices}, {\it Mathematical Programming}, 55:129--168, 1992], Conforti and Rao conjectured that every balanced bipartite graph contains an edge that is not the unique chord of a cycle. We prove this conjecture for balanced bipartite graphs that do not contain a cycle of length 4 (also known as linear balanced bipartite graphs), and for balanced bipartite graphs whose maximum degree is at most 3. We in fact obtain results for more general classes, namely linear balanceable and subcubic balanceable graphs. Additionally, we prove that cubic balanced graphs contain a pair of twins, a result that was conjectured by Morris, Spiga and Webb in [Balanced Cayley graphs and balanced planar graphs, {\it Discrete Mathematics}, 310:3228--3235, 2010].
