Abstract:We prove various converse theorems for automorphic forms on \Gamma_0(N), each assuming fewer twisted functional equations than the last. We show that no twisting at all is needed for holomorphic modular forms in the case that N is 18, 20, or 24 - these integers are the smallest multiples of 4 or 9 not covered by earlier work of Conrey-Farmer. This development is a consequence of finding generating sets for \Gamma_0(N) such that each generator can be written as a product of special matrices. As for real-analytic Maass forms of even (resp. odd) weight we prove the analogous statement for N=1,...12,16,18 (resp. N=1,...,12,14,15,16,17,18,20,23,24).

Algebraic twists of GL(2) automorphic forms

Abstract:In this article, we consider the problem of estimating the correlation of Hecke eigenvalues of GL2 automorphic forms with a class of functions of algebraic origin defined over finite fields called trace functions. The class of trace functions is vast and includes many standard exponential sums like Gauss sums, Klostermann sums, Hyperklostermann sums etc. In particular, we prove a Burgess type power saving (of 1/8) over the trivial bound for forms with level coprime to the prime p over whose residue field, the trace function is defined. For forms whose level is divisible by at most one power of p we obtain a saving of 1/12. This generalizes the results of E. Fouvry, E. Kowalski and Ph. Michel to the case of number fields, with a slightly more restrictive assumption on the Fourier-Möbius group attached to the trace function. Moreover, the implied constant for the 1/12 power saving bound has polynomial dependence on the archimedean part of the conductor of the form. We work using the language of adeles which makes the analysis involved softer and makes the generalization to number fields more natural. The proof proceeds by studying the amplified second moment spectral average of the correlation sum using the relative trace formula.

Ranks of abelian varieties in cyclotomic twist families

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$, and suppose that $\mathbb Z[\zeta_n]$ embeds in $\mathrm{End}_{\bar F} A$, for some root of unity $\zeta_n$ of order $n = 3^m$. Assuming that the Galois action on the finite group $A[1-\zeta_n]$ is sufficiently reducible, we bound the average rank of the Mordell--Weil groups $A_d(F)$, as $A_d$ varies through the family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists of $A$. Combining this with the recently proved uniform Mordell--Lang conjecture, we prove near-uniform bounds for the number of rational points in twist families of bicyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x^2)$, as well as in twist families of theta divisors of cyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x)$. Our main technical result is the determination of the average size of a $3$-isogeny Selmer group in a family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists.

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove, for a large class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, the existence of an explicit infinite family of quadratic twists with analytic rank $0$. In addition, we establish the $2$-part of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for many of these infinite families of quadratic twists. Recently, Xin Wan has used our results to prove for the first time the full Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for some explicit infinite families of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication.

Abstract:For certain elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with $E(\mathbb{Q})[2]=\mathbb{Z}/2 \mathbb{Z}$, we prove a criterion for prime twists of $E$ to have analytic rank 0 or 1, based on a mod 4 congruence of 2-adic logarithms of Heegner points. As an application, we prove new cases of Silverman's conjecture that there exists a positive proposition of prime twists of $E$ of rank zero (resp. positive rank).

Abstract:Let $E: y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ be an elliptic curve with full $2$-torsion group, where $a$ and $b$ are coprime integers and $2(a^2+b^2)$ is a square. Assume that the $2$-Selmer group of $E$ has rank two. We characterize all quadratic twists of $E$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate groups $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$, under certain conditions. We also obtain a distribution result of these elliptic curves.

Twists of superconformal algebras

Abstract:We develop the theory of ``conformal twists'' of superconformal field theories in dimensions 3 to 6, extending the well-known analysis of twists for supersymmetric theories. The conformal twists describe all possible inequivalent choices of a nilpotent element in the superconformal algebra. Such twists can give rise to interesting subalgebras and protected sectors of operators, with the Donaldson--Witten topological field theory and the vertex operator algebras of 4-dimensional N=2 SCFTs being prominent examples. We work mostly with the complexified superconformal algebras, unless explicitly stated otherwise; real forms of the superconformal algebra may have important physical implications, but we leave these subtleties to future work. To obtain mathematical precision, we explain how to extract vertex algebras and E_n algebras from a twisted superconformal field theory using factorization algebras.

Abstract:We determine the invariants, with arbitrary determinant twists, of the parabolic subgroups of the finite general linear group GL_n(q) acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of the natural GL_n(q)-module V. In addition, we obtain the graded multiplicity of the Steinberg module of GL_n(q) in the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of V, twisted by an arbitrary determinant power.

Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded. If $F$ is totally real, we moreover show that a positive proportion of twists have rank 0 and a positive proportion have $3$-Selmer rank 1. These results on bounded average ranks in families of quadratic twists represent new progress towards Goldfeld's conjecture -- which states that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ should be $1/2$ -- and the first progress towards the analogous conjecture over number fields other than $\mathbb{Q}$. Our results follow from a computation of the average size of the $\phi$-Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of an abelian variety admitting a 3-isogeny $\phi$.

Abstract:Matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular forms are intricate objects that arise in successive refinements of the Volume Conjecture of knots and involve three holomorphic, asymptotic and arithmetic objects. It is expected that the algebraic properties of these objects can be deduced from the algebraic properties of descendant state integrals, and we illustrate this for the case of the $(-2,3,7)$-pretzel knot.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:For a given irreducible and monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ of degree $4$, we consider the quadratic twists by square-free integers $q$ of the genus one quartic ${H\, :\, y^2=f(x)}$ \[ H_q \, :\, qy^2=f(x). \] We say that a curve $C$ is everywhere locally soluble (ELS) if it has a solution in $\mathbb{R}$ and in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for every prime $p$ (i.e. if $C(\mathbb{R})\neq \emptyset$ and $C(\mathbb{Q}_p)\neq \emptyset$ for all primes $p$). Let $L=\{q\in \mathbb{N} :\, q \text{ is square-free and } H_q \text{ is ELS}\}$ denote the set of positive square-free integers $q$ for which $H_q$ is everywhere locally soluble. For a real number $x$ let ${L(x)= \#\{q\in L:\, q<x\}}$ be the number of elements in $L$ that are less then $x$. Abstract:We construct explicit Drinfel'd twists for the generalized Cartan type S Lie algebras and obtain the corresponding quantizations. By modular reduction and base changes, we obtain certain quantizations of the restricted universal enveloping algebra u(S(n; (1) under bar)) in characteristic p. They are new Hopf algebras of truncated p-polynomial noncommutative and noncocommutative deformation of dimension p(1+(n-1)(pn-1)), which contain the well-known Radford algebra (Radford (1977) [23]) as a Hopf subalgebra. Abstract:We establish upper bounds for shifted moments of modular $L$-functions to a fixed modulus as well as quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions under the generalized Riemann hypothesis. Our results are then used to establish bounds for moments of sums involving with Fourier coefficients of a given modular form twisted by Dirichlet characters.
