Abstract:Submodular set functions are undoubtedly among the most important building blocks of combinatorial optimization. Somewhat surprisingly, continuous counterparts of such functions have also appeared in an analytic line of research where they found applications in the theory of finitely additive measures, nonlinear integrals, and electric capacities. Recently, a number of connections between these two branches have been established, and the aim of this paper is to generalize further results on submodular set functions on finite sets to the analytic setting. We first extend the notion of duality of matroids to submodular set functions, and characterize the uniquely determined decomposition of a submodular set function into the sum of a nonnegaive charge and an increasing submodular set function in which the charge is maximal. Then, we describe basic properties of infinite-alternating set functions, a subclass of submodular set functions that serves as an analytic counterpart of coverage functions. By relaxing the monotonicity assumption in the definition, we introduce a new class of submodular functions with distinguished structural properties that includes, among others, weighted cut functions of graphs. We prove that, unlike general submodular set functions over an infinite domain, any infinite-alternating set function can be written as the sum of an increasing and a decreasing submodular function or as the difference of two increasing submodular functions, thus giving extension of results on monotonic decompositions in the finite case. Finally, motivated by its connections to graph parameters such as the maximum size of a cut and the maximum size of a fractional triangle packing, we study the structure of such decompositions for weighted cut functions of undirected graphs.

Abstract:We introduce notions of lax semiadditive and lax additive $(\infty,2)$-categories, categorifying the classical notions of semiadditive and additive 1-categories. To establish a well-behaved axiomatic framework, we develop a calculus of lax matrices and use it to prove that in locally cocomplete $(\infty,2)$-categories lax limits and lax colimits agree and are absolute. In the lax additive setting, we categorify fundamental constructions from homological algebra such as mapping complexes and mapping cones and establish their basic properties.

Abstract:In the paper the notion of weakly K -subadditive set-valued maps is introduced in such a way that F is weakly K -superadditive if and only if is weakly K -subadditive. This new definition is a natural generalization of K -subadditive set-valued maps from Jabłońska and Nikodem (Aequ Math 95:1221–1231, 2021), for which opposite set-valued maps need not be K -subadditive. Among others, we prove that every weakly K -subadditive set-valued map which is K –upper bounded on a "large" set has to be locally weakly K -upper bounded and weakly K -lower bounded at every point of the domain. This theorem completes an analogous result for K -subadditive set-valued maps which are weakly K -upper bounded on "large" sets from Jabłońska and Nikodem (Aequ Math 95:1221–1231, 2021).

Abstract:We introduce dependent adders. A dependent adder $A$ has for every $x \in A$ a way of adding together $x$ many elements of $A$. We provide examples from many disparate branches of mathematics. Examples include the field with one element $\mathbb{F}_1$, the real numbers with integrals as sums, the category of categories with oplax colimits as sums. We also consider modules over dependent adders and provide examples.

Abstract:Given any irreducible inclusion $\mB \subset \mA$ of unital $C^*$-algebras with a finite-index conditional expectation $E: \mA \to \mB$, we show that the set of $E$-compatible intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras is finite, thereby generalizing a finiteness result of Ino and Watatani (from \cite{IW}). A finiteness result for a certain collection of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of a non-irreducible inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras is also obtained, which provides a $C^*$-version of a finiteness result of Khoshkam and Mashood (from \cite{KM}).

Abstract:In the paper, we extend the widely used in optimization theory decoupling techniques to infinite collections of functions. Extended concepts of uniform lower semicontinuity and firm uniform lower semicontinuity as well as the new concepts of weak uniform lower semicontinuity and robust infimum are discussed. We study the uniform and robust minimum, and provide conditions under which these minimality concepts reduce to the conventional one. The main theorem gives fuzzy subdifferential necessary conditions (multiplier rules) for a quasiuniform local minimum of the sum of an infinite collection of functions without the traditional Lipschitz continuity assumptions. We consider a general infinite convex optimization problem, and develop a methodology for closing the duality gap and guaranteeing strong duality. In this setting, application of the fuzzy multiplier and sum rules for infinite sums produces general optimality conditions/multiplier rules.

Abstract:Abstract convexity generalises classical convexity by considering the suprema of functions taken from an arbitrarily defined set of functions. These are called the abstract linear (abstract affine) functions. The purpose of this paper is to study the abstract subdifferential. We obtain a number of results on the calculus of this subdifferential: summation and composition rules, and prove that under some reasonable conditions the subdifferential is a maximal abstract monotone operator. Another contribution of this paper is a counterexample that demonstrates that the separation theorem between two abstract convex sets is generally not true. The lack of the extension of separation results to the case of abstract convexity is one of the obstacles in the development of abstract convexity based numerical methods.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the interplay between isolated suborders and closures. Isolated suborders are a special kind of suborders and can be used to diminish the number of elements of an ordered set by means of a quotient construction. The decisive point is that there are simple formulae establishing relationships between the number of closures in the original ordered set and the quotient thereof induced by isolated suborders. We show how these connections can be used to derive a recursive algorithm for counting closures, provided the ordered set under consideration contains suitable isolated suborders.

Abstract:First, we solve a crucial problem under which conditions increasing uniform K-monotonicity is equivalent to lower locally uniform K-monotonicity. Next, we investigate properties of substochastic operators on $L^1+L^\infty$ with applications. Namely, we show that a countable infinite combination of substochastic operators is also substochastic. Using K-monotonicity properties, we prove several theorems devoted to the convergence of the sequence of substochastic operators in the norm of a symmetric space E under addition assumption on E. In our final discussion we focus on compactness of admissible operators for arbitrary Banach couples.

Abstract:The usage of elementary submodels is a simple but powerful method to prove theorems, or to simplify proofs in infinite combinatorics. First we introduce all the necessary concepts of logic, then we prove classical theorems using elementary submodels. We also present a new proof of Nash-Williams's theorem on cycle-decomposition of graphs, and finally we improve a decomposition theorem of Laviolette concerning bond-faithful decompositions of graphs.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a notion of reducibility for partial functions on the natural numbers, which we call subTuring reducibility. One important aspect is that the subTuring degrees correspond to the structure of the realizability subtoposes of the effective topos. We show that the subTuring degrees (that is, the realizability subtoposes of the effective topos) form a dense non-modular (thus, non-distributive) lattice. We also show that there is a nonzero join-irreducible subTuring degree (which implies that there is a realizability subtopos of the effective topos that cannot be decomposed into two smaller realizability subtoposes).

Abstract:By the additive property, we mean a condition under which $L^p$ spaces over finitely additive measures are complete. Basile and Rao gives a necessary and sufficient condition that a finite sum of finitely additive measures has the additive property. Abstract:We consider a stochastic matching model with a general compatibility graph, as introduced in Mairesse and Moyal (J Appl Probab 53(4):1064–1077, 2016). We prove that most common matching policies (including fcfm , priorities and random) satisfy a particular sub-additive property, which we exploit to show in many cases, the coupling-from-the-past to the steady state, using a backwards scheme à la Loynes. We then use these results to explicitly construct perfect bi-infinite matchings, and to build a perfect simulation algorithm in the case where the buffer of the system is finite.
