Abstract:The pseudo-additive relation that the Tsallis entropy satisfies has nothing whatsoever to do with the super- and sub- additivity properties of the entropy. The latter properties, like concavity and convexity, are couched in geometric inequalities and cannot be reduced to equalities. Rather, the pseudo-additivity relation is a functional equation that determines the functional forms of the random entropies. The Arimoto entropy satisfies a similar pseudo-additive relation and yet it is a first order homogeneous form. Hence no conclusions can be drawn on the extensive nature of the system from either the Tsallis or Arimoto entropy based on the pseudo-additive equation.

Abstract:We consider the canonical pseudodistributive law between various free limit completion pseudomonads and the free coproduct completion pseudomonad. When the class of limits includes pullbacks, we show that this consideration leads to notions of extensive categories. More precisely, we show that extensive categories with pullbacks and infinitary lextensive categories are the pseudoalgebras for the pseudomonads resulting from the pseudodistributive laws. Moreover, we introduce the notion of doubly-infinitary lextensive category, and we establish that the freely generated such categories are cartesian closed. From this result, we further deduce that, in freely generated infinitary lextensive categories, the objects with a finite number of connected components are exponentiable. We conclude our work with remarks on descent theoretical aspects of this work, along with results concerning non-canonical isomorphisms, and relationship with other work.

Abstract:We introduce notions of lax semiadditive and lax additive $(\infty,2)$-categories, categorifying the classical notions of semiadditive and additive 1-categories. To establish a well-behaved axiomatic framework, we develop a calculus of lax matrices and use it to prove that in locally cocomplete $(\infty,2)$-categories lax limits and lax colimits agree and are absolute. In the lax additive setting, we categorify fundamental constructions from homological algebra such as mapping complexes and mapping cones and establish their basic properties.

Abstract:Nonextensive entropies are divided into three classes, each of which is characterized by Shannon additivity and pseudoadditivity. One of the three classes has properties of both additivities. The remaining classes have only one property of the two additivities, respectively. An example of nonextensive entropy is shown concretely for each class. In particular, one class is found to consist of only the Tsallis entropy. More precisely, the Tsallis entropy is proved to be uniquely determined by only these two additivities. The present classification using these two distinct additivities reveals unique characteristics of the Tsallis entropy.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. A set $B$, a set of natural numbers, is said to be an additive complement of the set $A$ if all sufficiently large natural numbers can be represented in the form $x+y$, where $x\in A$ and $y\in B$. This article describes various types of additive complements of the set $A$ such as those additive complement of $A$ that does not intersects $A$, additive complements of the form of the union of disjoint infinite arithmetic progressions, additive complement having various density etc. As an application of this study, we also focus on the structure of sumset of arithmetic progression and geometric progression. Apart from this, for given positive real no. $\alpha \leq 1$ and finite set $A$, we investigate a set $B$ such that it can be written as union of disjoint infinite arithmetic progression and density of $A+B$ is $\alpha$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. A set $B$, a set of natural numbers, is an additive complement of the set $A$ if all sufficiently large natural numbers can be represented in the form $x+y$, where $x\in A$ and $y\in B$. Erdős proposed a conjecture that every infinite set of natural numbers has a sparse additive complement, and in 1954, Lorentz proved this conjecture. This article describes the existence or non-existence of those additive complements of the set $A$ that is a subset of the complement of $A$. We provide a ratio test to verify the existence of such additive complements. In precise, we prove that if $A=\{a_i: i\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a set of natural numbers such that $a_i<a_{i+1} $ for $i \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty } (a_{n+1}/a_{n})>1$, then there exists a set $B\subset \mathbb{N}\setminus A$ such that $B$ is a sparse additive complement of the set $A$.

Abstract:It is known that for any IP ⁎ set A and any sequence 〈xn〉n=1∞ in (N,+) , there exists a sum subsystem of 〈xn〉n=1∞ whose finite sums and finite products are in A . Similar results have been established for some other combinatorial notions. In this article, we introduce a general notion called completely I -large ⁎ sets, which can be IP ⁎ sets, central ⁎ sets or C ⁎ -sets when I is the corresponding ideal. And we establish a result for this notion to unify all known results. Furthermore, we apply this general result to another notion - quasi-central ⁎ sets to obtain corresponding combinatorial results.

Abstract:By the additive property, we mean a condition under which $L^p$ spaces over finitely additive measures are complete. Basile and Rao gives a necessary and sufficient condition that a finite sum of finitely additive measures has the additive property. We generalize this result to the case of a countable sum of finitely additive meaures. An application of this result to density measures are also presented.

Abstract:The Shannon-Khinchin axioms are generalized to nonextensive systems and the uniqueness theorem for the nonextensive entropy is proved rigorously. In the present axioms, Shannon additivity is used as additivity in contrast to pseudoadditivity in Abe's axioms. The results reveal that Tsallis entropy is the simplest among all nonextensive entropies which can be obtained from the generalized Shannon-Khinchin axioms.

Extensive approach to absolute homogeneity

Abstract:The main aim of the paper is to study in greater detail absolutely homogeneous structures (that is, objects with the property that each partial isomorphism extends to a global automorphism), with special emphasis on metric spaces and (possibly infinite, full) graphs with edge-coloring. Besides, a general categorical approach to this concept is presented. The main achievement of the paper is the discovery of one-to-one correspondence between absolutely homogeneous objects and certain classes (that become sets when isomorphic objects are identified) of "finite" objects that satisfy a few quite general axioms (such as amalgamation and heredity). It is also introduced and discussed in detail the concept of products for graphs with edge-coloring (that produces an absolutely homogeneous graph provided all factors are so). Among the most significant results of the paper, it is worth mentioning a full classification (up to isometry) of all absolutely homogeneous ultrametric spaces as well as of all absolutely homogeneous graphs with edge-coloring in which all triangles are isosceles or in which all triangles are (precisely) tricolored.

We provide examples from many disparate branches of mathematics. We also consider modules over dependent adders and provide examples.

Abstract:In this work, some properties of the general convolutional operators of general fractional calculus (GFC), which satisfy analogues of the fundamental theorems of calculus, are described. Two types of general fractional (GF) operators on a finite interval exist in GFC that are conventionally called the L-type and T-type operators. The main difference between these operators is that the additivity property holds for T-type operators and is violated for L-type operators. This property is very important for the application of GFC in physics and other sciences. The presence or violation of the additivity property can be associated with qualitative differences in the behavior of physical processes and systems. In this paper, we define L-type line GF integrals and L-type line GF gradients. For these L-type operators, the gradient theorem is proved in this paper. In general, the L-type line GF integral over a simple line is not equal to the sum of the L-type line GF integrals over lines that make up the entire line. In this work, it is shown that there exist two cases when the additivity property holds for the L-type line GF integrals. In the first case, the L-type line GF integral along the line is equal to the sum of the L-type line GF integrals along parts of this line only if the processes, which are described by these lines, are independent. Processes are called independent if the history of changes in the subsequent process does not depend on the history of the previous process. In the second case, we prove the additivity property holds for the L-type line GF integrals, if the conditions of the GF gradient theorems are satisfied.

Abstract:In ancient Greek mathematics, magnitudes such as lengths were strictly distinguished from numbers. In modern quantity calculus, a distinction is made between quantities and scalars that serve as measures of quantities. It can be argued that quantities should play a more prominent, independent role in modern mathematics, as magnitudes earlier. The introduction includes a sketch of the development and structure of the pre-modern theory of magnitudes and numbers. Then, a scalable monoid over a ring is defined and its basic properties are described. Congruence relations on scalable monoids, direct and tensor products of scalable monoids, subalgebras and homomorphic images of scalable monoids, and unit elements of scalable monoids are also defined and analyzed. A quantity space is defined as a commutative scalable monoid over a field, admitting a finite basis similar to a basis for a free abelian group. The mathematical theory of quantity spaces forms the basis of a rigorous quantity calculus and is developed with a view to applications in metrology and foundations of physics.

On the interplay between notions of additive and multiplicative largeness and its combinatorial applications

Abstract:Many natural notions of additive and multiplicative largeness arise from results in Ramsey theory. In this paper, we explain the relationships between these notions for subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and in more general ring-theoretic structures. We show that multiplicative largeness begets additive largeness in three ways and give a collection of examples demonstrating the optimality of these results. We also give a variety of applications arising from the connection between additive and multiplicative largeness. For example, we show that given any $n, k \in \mathbb{N}$, any finite set with fewer than $n$ elements in a sufficiently large finite field can be translated so that each of its elements becomes a non-zero $k^{\text{th}}$ power. We also prove a theorem concerning Diophantine approximation along multiplicatively syndetic subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and a theorem showing that subsets of positive upper Banach density in certain multiplicative sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$ of zero density contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Along the way, we develop a new characterization of upper Banach density in a wide class of amenable semigroups and make explicit the uniformity in recurrence theorems from measure theoretic and topological dynamics. This in turn leads to strengthened forms of classical theorems of Szemerédi and van der Waerden on arithmetic progressions.

More is Better: English Language Statistics are Biased Toward Addition

Abstract:We have evolved to become who we are, at least in part, due to our general drive to create new things and ideas. When seeking to improve our creations, ideas, or situations, we systematically overlook opportunities to perform subtractive changes. For example, when tasked with giving feedback on an academic paper, reviewers will tend to suggest additional explanations and analyses rather than delete existing ones. Here, we show that this addition bias is systematically reflected in English language statistics along several distinct dimensions. First, we show that words associated with an increase in quantity or number (e.g., add, addition, more, most) are more frequent than words associated with a decrease in quantity or number (e.g., subtract, subtraction, less, least). Second, we show that in binomial expressions, addition-related words are mentioned first, that is, add and subtract rather than subtract and add. Third, we show that the distributional semantics of verbs of change, such as to improve and to transform, overlap more with the distributional semantics of add/increase than subtract/decrease, which suggests that change verbs are implicitly biased toward addition. Fourth, addition-related words have more positive connotations than subtraction-related words. Fifth, we demonstrate that state-of-the-art large language models, such as the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT-3), are also biased toward addition. We discuss the implications of our results for research on cognitive biases and decision-making.

Abstract:It is known that the additivity conjecture of Holevo capacity, output minimum entoropy, and the entanglement of formation (EoF), are equivalent with each other. Among them, the output minimum entropy is simplest, and hence many researchers are focusing on this quantity. Here, we suggest yet another entanglement measure, whose strong superadditivity and additivity are equivalent to the additivity of the quantities mentioned above. This quantity is as simple as the output minimum entropy, and in existing proofs of additivity conjecture of the output minimum entropy for the specific examples, they are essentially proving the strong superadditivity of this quantity.
