Abstract:We verify the inductive McKay--Navarro condition for the groups $\mathsf{B}_2(2^f)$ and $\mathsf{G}_2(3^f)$ and all primes if $f$ is odd. Further, we show that the equivariance part of the inductive condition holds for all integers $f$.

Abstract:We determine the action of the outer automorphism group Out$(G)$ on the set of irreducible characters Irr$(G)$ for all finite quasi-simple groups $G$. For groups of Lie type, this includes the construction of an Out$(G)$-equivariant Jordan decomposition of characters (Theorem B). We also prove an extendibility statement, called condition $A(\infty)$, see Theorem A. Among the methods used here in the case of groups of type D and $^2$D, we blend the Shintani descent ideas introduced in [CS19, §~3] and an analysis of semisimple classes in the dual group $G^*$ from [CS22]. This enables us to control the action of graph and field automorphisms within Lusztig's rational series of characters and to count extendible characters. Condition $A(\infty)$ originates in the program to prove the McKay conjecture using the classification of finite simple groups, see [IMN07]. Using the local results from [MS16], our main theorem implies the McKay conjecture for the prime 3 and all finite groups.

Abstract:McKay's conjecture (1971) on character degrees was reduced by Isaacs-Malle-Navarro (2007) to a so-called inductive condition on characters of finite quasisimple groups [IMN07], thus opening the way to a proof of McKay's conjecture using the classification of finite simple groups. After [Ma07], [Ma08], [S12], [CS13], [KS16], [MS16], [CS17a], [CS17b], [CS19], [S23a], [S23b], we complete here the last step of a proof with an analysis of the representations of certain normalizers ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ in $G={\mathbf G}^F$ of maximal $d$-tori ${\mathbf S}$ ($d\geq 3$) of the ambient simple simply-connected algebraic group ${\mathbf G}$ of type ${\mathrm D}_l$ ($l\geq 4$) for which $F$ is a Frobenius endomorphism. To establish the so-called local conditions A$(d)$ and B$(d)$, we introduce a certain class of $F$-stable reductive subgroups ${\mathbf M}\leq {\mathbf G}$ of maximal rank where ${\mathbf M}^\circ$ is of type ${\mathrm D}_{l_1}\times {\mathrm D}_{l-l_1}$ with ${\mathbf M}/{\mathbf M}^\circ$ of order 2. They are an efficient substitute for ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ or the local subgroups in non-defining characteristic relevant to McKay's abstract statement. For a general class of those subgroups ${\mathbf M}^F$ we describe their characters and the action of $\operatorname {Aut}({\mathbf G}^F)_{{\mathbf M}^F}$ on them, showing in particular that $\mathrm{Irr}({\mathbf M}^F)$ and $\mathrm {Irr}({\mathbf G}^F)$ share some key features in that regard. With this established, McKay's conjecture is now a theorem stating $\textit{McKay's equality}$: For any prime $\ell$, any finite group has as many irreducible complex characters of degree prime to $\ell$ as the normalizers of its Sylow $\ell$-subgroups.

Abstract:This is a contribution to the study of $\operatorname {Irr}(G)$ as an $\operatorname {Aut}(G)$-set for $G$ a finite quasi-simple group. Focusing on the last open case of groups of Lie type $\mathrm D$ and $^2\mathrm D$, a crucial property is the so-called condition $A'(\infty)$ expressing that diagonal automorphisms and graph-field automorphisms of $G$ have transversal orbits in $\operatorname {Irr}(G)$. This is part of the stronger $A(\infty)$ condition introduced in the context of the reduction of the McKay conjecture to a question on quasi-simple groups. Our main theorem is that a minimal counter-example to condition $A(\infty)$ for groups of type $\mathrm D$ would still satisfy $A'(\infty)$. This will be used in a second paper to fully establish $A(\infty)$ for any type and rank. The present paper uses Harish-Chandra induction as a parametrization tool. We give a new, more effective proof of the theorem of Geck and Lusztig ensuring that cuspidal characters of arbitrary standard Levi subgroups of $G={\mathrm D}_{ l,\mathrm{sc}}(q)$ extend to their stabilizers in the normalizer of that Levi subgroup. This allows to control the action of automorphisms on these extensions. From there Harish Chandra theory leads naturally to a detailed study of associated relative Weyl groups and other extendibility problems in that context.

On Certain McKay Numbers of Symmetric Groups

Abstract:For primes $\ell$ and nonnegative integers $a$, we study the partition functions $$p_\ell(a;n):= \#\{\lambda \vdash n : \text{ord}_\ell(H(\lambda))=a\},$$ where $H(\lambda)$ denotes the product of hook lengths of a partition $\lambda$. These partition values arise as the McKay numbers $m_\ell(\text{ord}_\ell(n!) - a; S_n)$ in the representation theory of the symmetric group. We determine the generating functions for $p_\ell(a;n)$ in terms of $p_\ell(0;n)$ and specializations of specific D'Arcais polynomials. For $\ell = 2$ and $3$, we give an exact formula for the $p_\ell(a;n)$ and prove that these values are zero for almost all $n$. For larger primes $\ell$, the $p_\ell(a;n)$ are positive for sufficiently large $n$. Despite this positivity, we prove that $p_\ell(a;n)$ is almost always divisible by $m$ for any integer $m$. Furthermore, with these results we prove several Ramanujan-type congruences. These include the congruences $$p_\ell(a;\ell^k n - \delta(a,\ell)) \equiv 0 \pmod{\ell^{k+1}},$$ for $0<a< \ell$, where $\ell = 5, 7, 11$ and $\delta(a,\ell) := (\ell^2 - 1)/24 + a\ell$, which answer a question of Ono.

Invariable generation of certain branch groups

Abstract:We investigate invariable generation among key examples of branch groups. In particular, we prove that all generating sets of the torsion Grigorchuk groups, of the branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups and of the torsion multi-EGS groups (which are natural generalisations of the Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups) are invariable generating sets. Furthermore, for the first Grigorchuk group and the torsion Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups, every finitely generated subgroup has a finite invariable generating set. We also show that a branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki group is almost $\frac32$-generated, that the diameter of its generating subgraph $\Delta(G)$ is 2 and its total domination number is 2. Some of our results apply to groups for which every maximal subgroup is normal. This class, known as $\mathcal{MN}$, includes all nilpotent groups.

Abstract:We provide an inductive proof of Borchardt's theorem for calculating the permanent of a Cauchy matrix via the determinants of auxiliary matrices. This result has implications for antisymmetric products of interacting geminals (APIG), and suggests that the restriction of the APIG coefficients to Cauchy form (typically called APr2G) is special in its tractability.

Abstract:We take an approach toward counting the number of n for which the curves E_n: y^2=x^3-n^2x have 2-Selmer groups of a given size. This question was also discussed in a pair of Invent. Math. papers by Roger Heath-Brown. We discuss the connection between computing the size of these Selmer groups and verifying cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. The key ingredient for the asymptotic formulae is the ``independence'' of the Legendre symbol evaluated at the prime divisors of an integer with exactly k prime factors.

Abstract:We construct an action of the braid group B_{2g+2} on the free group F_{2g} extending an action of B_4 on F_2 introduced earlier by Reutenauer and the author. Our action induces a homomorphism from B_{2g+2} into the symplectic modular group Sp_{2g}(Z). In the special case g=2 we show that the latter homomorphism is surjective and determine its kernel, thus obtaining a braid-like presentation of Sp_4(Z).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group and $k$ a positive integer, we show that the $L^2$-Betti numbers of the group $G$ vanish up to degree $k$ provided that there is some infinite index subgroup $H$ with finite $k$th $L^2$-Betti number containing a normal subgroup of $G$ whose $L^2$-Betti numbers are all zero below degree $k$. This generalizes previous criteria of both Sauer and Thom, and Peterson and Thom. In addition, we exhibit a purely algebraic proof of a well-known theorem of Gaboriau concerning the first $L^2$-Betti number which was requested by Bourdon, Martin and Valette. Finally, we provide evidence of a positive answer for a question posted by Hillman that wonders whether the above statement holds for $k = 1$ and $H$ containing a subnormal subgroup instead.

Davenport constant and its variants for some non-abelian groups

Abstract:We define two variants $e(G)$, $f(G)$ of the Davenport constant $d(G)$ of a finite group $G$, that is not necessarily abelian. These naturally arising constants aid in computing $d(G)$ and are of potential independent interest. We compute the constants $d(G)$, $e(G)$, $f(G)$ for some nonabelian groups G, and demonstrate that, unlike abelian groups where these constants are identical, they can each be distinct. As a byproduct of our results, we also obtain some cases of a conjecture of J. Bass. We compute the $k$-th Davenport constant for several classes of groups as well. We also make a conjecture on $f(G)$ for metacyclic groups and provide evidence towards it.

Abstract:A conjecture in [Ish20] states that for a finite subgroup $G$ of $GL(2; \mathbb{C})$, a resolution $Y$ of $\mathbb{C}^2/G$ is isomorphic to a moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{\theta}$ of $G$-constellations for some generic stability parameter $\theta$ if and only if $Y$ is dominated by the maximal resolution. This paper affirms the conjecture in the case of dihedral groups as a class of complex reflection groups, and offers an extension of McKay correspondence (via [IN1], [IN2], and [Ish02]).

Abstract:We apply the theory of $\alpha$-induction of sectors which we elaborated in our previous paper to several nets of subfactors arising from conformal field theory. The main application are conformal embeddings and orbifold inclusions of SU(n) WZW models. For the latter, we construct the extended net of factors by hand. Developing further some ideas of F. Xu, our treatment leads canonically to certain fusion graphs, and in all our examples we rediscover the graphs Di Francesco, Petkova and Zuber associated empirically to the corresponding SU(n) modular invariants. We establish a connection between exponents of these graphs and the appearance of characters in the block-diagonal modular invariants, provided that the extended modular S-matrices diagonalize the endomorphism fusion rules of the extended theories. This is proven for many cases, and our results cover all the block-diagonal SU(2) modular invariants, thus provide some explanation of the A-D-E classification.

Abstract:For $p$ a prime, $G$ a finite group and $A$ a normal subset of elements of order $p$, we prove that if $A^2 = \{ab \mid a, b \in A\}$ consists of $p$-elements then $Q = \langle A \rangle$ is soluble. Further, if $O_p(G) = 1$, we show that $p$ is odd, $F(Q)$ is a non-trivial $p'$-group and $Q/F(Q)$ is an elementary abelian $p$-group. We also provide examples which show this conclusion is best possible.

Kadison's problem for type III subfactors and the bicentralizer conjecture

Abstract:In 1967, Kadison asked "if $N$ is a subfactor of the factor $M$ for which $N' \cap M$ consists of scalars, will some maximal abelian *-subalgebra of $N$ be a maximal abelian subalgebra of $M$?". Generalizing a theorem of Popa in the type $\mathrm{II}$ case (1981), we solve Kadison's problem for all subfactors with expectation $N \subset M$ where $N$ is either a type $\mathrm{III}_\lambda$ factor with $0 \leq \lambda < 1$ or a type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor that satisfies Connes's bicentralizer conjecture. Our solution is based on a new explicit formula for the bicentralizer algebras of arbitrary inclusions. This formula implies a type $\mathrm{III}$ analog of Popa's local quantization principle. We generalize Haaegrup's theorem from 1984 by connecting the relative bicentralizer conjecture to the Dixmier property. Finally, we prove this conjecture for a large class of inclusions and we prove an ergodicity theorem for the bicentralizer flow. We also give applications of our methods to $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors, including a new characterization of Ozawa's W*-Akemann-Ostrand property.
