Abstract:We complete the proof of the McKay--Navarro conjecture (also known as the Galois--McKay conjecture) for the prime 2, by completing the proof of the inductive McKay--Navarro conditions introduced by Navarro--Späth--Vallejo in this situation.

Abstract:We prove analogues of the Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

Abstract:McKay's conjecture (1971) on character degrees was reduced by Isaacs-Malle-Navarro (2007) to a so-called inductive condition on characters of finite quasisimple groups [IMN07], thus opening the way to a proof of McKay's conjecture using the classification of finite simple groups. After [Ma07], [Ma08], [S12], [CS13], [KS16], [MS16], [CS17a], [CS17b], [CS19], [S23a], [S23b], we complete here the last step of a proof with an analysis of the representations of certain normalizers ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ in $G={\mathbf G}^F$ of maximal $d$-tori ${\mathbf S}$ ($d\geq 3$) of the ambient simple simply-connected algebraic group ${\mathbf G}$ of type ${\mathrm D}_l$ ($l\geq 4$) for which $F$ is a Frobenius endomorphism. To establish the so-called local conditions A$(d)$ and B$(d)$, we introduce a certain class of $F$-stable reductive subgroups ${\mathbf M}\leq {\mathbf G}$ of maximal rank where ${\mathbf M}^\circ$ is of type ${\mathrm D}_{l_1}\times {\mathrm D}_{l-l_1}$ with ${\mathbf M}/{\mathbf M}^\circ$ of order 2. They are an efficient substitute for ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ or the local subgroups in non-defining characteristic relevant to McKay's abstract statement. For a general class of those subgroups ${\mathbf M}^F$ we describe their characters and the action of $\operatorname {Aut}({\mathbf G}^F)_{{\mathbf M}^F}$ on them, showing in particular that $\mathrm{Irr}({\mathbf M}^F)$ and $\mathrm {Irr}({\mathbf G}^F)$ share some key features in that regard. With this established, McKay's conjecture is now a theorem stating $\textit{McKay's equality}$: For any prime $\ell$, any finite group has as many irreducible complex characters of degree prime to $\ell$ as the normalizers of its Sylow $\ell$-subgroups.

Abstract:We prove the existence of two non-isomorphic number fields K and L such that the maximal two-step nilpotent quotients of their absolute Galois groups are isomorphic. In particular, one may take K and L to be any of the fields , , , or . Furthermore, we give an explicit combinatorial description of these Galois groups in terms of a generalization of the Rado graph. A critical ingredient in our proofs is the back-and-forth method from model theory.

Abstract:It is shown that if every odd integer $n > 5$ is the sum of three primes, then every even integer $n > 2$ is the sum of two primes. A conditional proof of Goldbach's conjecture, based on Cramér's conjecture, is presented. Theoretical and experimental results available on Goldbach's conjecture allow that a less restrictive conjecture than Cramér's conjecture be used in the conditional proof. A basic result of the Maier's paper on Cramér's model is criticized.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

Abstract:Suppose that $n$ is $0$ or $4$ modulo $6$. We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p^2 + nq^2$ with both $p$ and $q$ prime, and obtain an asymptotic for their number. In particular, when $n = 4$ we verify the `Gaussian primes conjecture' of Friedlander and Iwaniec. We study the problem using the method of Type I/II sums in the number field $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. The main innovation is in the treatment of the Type II sums, where we make heavy use of two recent developments in the theory of Gowers norms in additive combinatorics: quantitative versions of so-called concatenation theorems, due to Kuca and to Kuca--Kravitz-Leng, and the quasipolynomial inverse theorem of Leng, Sah and the second author.

$L^2$-vanishing theorem and a conjecture of Kollár

Abstract:In 1995, Kollár conjectured that a complex projective $n$-fold $X$ with generically large fundamental group has Euler characteristic $\chi(X, K_X)\geq 0$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture assuming $X$ has linear fundamental group, i.e., there exists an almost faithful representation $\pi_1(X)\to {\rm GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. We deduce the conjecture by proving a stronger $L^2$ vanishing theorem: for the universal cover $\widetilde{X}$ of such $X$, its $L^2$-Dolbeaut cohomology $H_{(2)}^{n,q}(\widetilde{X})=0$ for $q\neq 0$. The main ingredients of the proof are techniques from the linear Shafarevich conjecture along with some analytic methods.

Abstract:For a genus $2$ curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $A$ admits only trivial geometric endomorphisms, Serre's open image theorem for abelian surfaces asserts that there are only finitely many primes $\ell$ for which the Galois action on $\ell$-torsion points of $A$ is not maximal. Building on work of Dieulefait, we give a practical algorithm to compute this finite set. The key inputs are Mitchell's classification of maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{PSp_4}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$, sampling of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, and the Khare--Wintenberger modularity theorem. The algorithm has been submitted for integration into Sage, executed on all of the genus~$2$ curves with trivial endomorphism ring in the LMFDB, and the results incorporated into the homepage of each such curve.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a set of primes of $K$. We write $K_S/K$ for the maximal extension of $K$ unramified outside $S$ and $G_{K,S}$ for its Galois group. In this paper, we prove the following generalization of the Neukirch-Uchida theorem under some assumptions: "For $i=1,2$, let $K_i$ be a number field and $S_i$ a set of primes of $K_i$. If $G_{K_1,S_1}$ and $G_{K_2,S_2}$ are isomorphic, then $K_1$ and $K_2$ are isomorphic." Here the main assumption is that the Dirichlet density of $S_i$ is not zero for at least one $i$. A key step of the proof is to recover group-theoretically the $l$-adic cyclotomic character of an open subgroup of $G_{K,S}$ for some prime number $l$.

On Certain McKay Numbers of Symmetric Groups

Abstract:For primes $\ell$ and nonnegative integers $a$, we study the partition functions $$p_\ell(a;n):= \#\{\lambda \vdash n : \text{ord}_\ell(H(\lambda))=a\},$$ where $H(\lambda)$ denotes the product of hook lengths of a partition $\lambda$. These partition values arise as the McKay numbers $m_\ell(\text{ord}_\ell(n!) - a; S_n)$ in the representation theory of the symmetric group. We determine the generating functions for $p_\ell(a;n)$ in terms of $p_\ell(0;n)$ and specializations of specific D'Arcais polynomials. For $\ell = 2$ and $3$, we give an exact formula for the $p_\ell(a;n)$ and prove that these values are zero for almost all $n$. For larger primes $\ell$, the $p_\ell(a;n)$ are positive for sufficiently large $n$. Despite this positivity, we prove that $p_\ell(a;n)$ is almost always divisible by $m$ for any integer $m$. Furthermore, with these results we prove several Ramanujan-type congruences. These include the congruences $$p_\ell(a;\ell^k n - \delta(a,\ell)) \equiv 0 \pmod{\ell^{k+1}},$$ for $0<a< \ell$, where $\ell = 5, 7, 11$ and $\delta(a,\ell) := (\ell^2 - 1)/24 + a\ell$, which answer a question of Ono.

Abstract:We study the ring of invariants for a finite dimensional representation $V$ of the group $C_2$ of order 2 in characteristic $2$. Let $\sigma$ denote a generator of $C_2$ and $\{x_1,y_1 \dots, x_m,y_m\}$ a basis of $V^*$. Then $\sigma(x_i) = x_i$, and $\sigma(y_i) = y_i + x_i$. To our knowledge, this ring (for any prime $p$) was first studied by David Richman in 1990. He gave a first main theorem for $(V_2, C_2)$, that is, he proved that the ring of invariants when $p=2$ is generated by $\{x_i, N_i = y_i^2 + x_iy_i, tr(A) | 2 \le |A| \le m\}$ where $A \subset \{0,1\}^m$, $y^A = y_1^{a_1} y_2^{a_2} \cdots y_m^{a_m}$ and $tr(A) = y^A + (y_1+x_1)^{a_1}(y_2+x_2)^{a_2} \cdots (y_m+x_m)^{a_m}.$ In this paper, we prove the second main theorem for $(V_2, C_2)$, that is, we show that all relations between these generators are generated by relations of type I: $\sum_{I \subset A } x^I tr(A-I)$ and of type II: $tr(A) tr(B) = \sum_{L < I} x^{I-L} N^L tr(I-L+J+K) + N^I \sum_{L < J} x^{J-L} tr(L+K)$ for all $m$. We also derive relations of type III which are simpler and can be used in place of the relations of type II.

A Brauer--Galois height zero conjecture

Abstract:Recently, Malle and Navarro obtained a Galois strengthening of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks when $p=2$, considering a particular Galois automorphism of order~$2$. In this paper, for any prime $p$ we consider a certain elementary abelian $p$-subgroup of the absolute Galois group and propose a Galois version of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks. We prove it when $p=2$ and also for arbitrary $p$ when $G$ does not involve certain groups of Lie type of small rank as composition factors. Furthermore, we prove it for almost simple groups and for $p$-solvable groups.
