Abstract:Extending a proposal of Defant and Kravitz [Discrete Mathematics, \textbf{1}, 347 (2024)], we define Hitomezashi patterns and loops on a torus and provide several structural results for such loops. For a given pattern, our main theorems give optimal residual information regarding the Hitomezashi loop length, loop count, as well as possible homology classes of such loops. Special attention is paid to toroidal Hitomezashi patterns that are symmetric with respect to the diagonal $x = y$, where we establish a novel connection between Hitomezashi and knot theory.

Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:Hitomezashi patterns, which originate from traditional Japanese embroidery, are intricate arrangements of unit-length line segments called stitches. The stitches connect to form hitomezashi strands and hitomezashi loops, which divide the plane into regions. We investigate the deeper mathematical properties of these patterns, which also feature prominently in the study of corner percolation. It was previously known that every loop in a hitomezashi pattern has odd width and odd height. We additionally prove that such a loop has length congruent to $4$ modulo $8$ and area congruent to $1$ modulo $4$. Although these results are simple to state, their proofs require us to understand the delicate topological and combinatorial properties of slicing operations that can be applied to hitomezashi patterns. We also show that the expected number of regions in a random $m\times n$ hitomezashi pattern (chosen according to a natural random model) is asymptotically $\left(\frac{\pi^2-9}{12}+o(1)\right)mn$.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:Let K = Q(root-q), where q is any prime number congruent to 7 modulo 8, and let O be the ring of integers of K. The prime 2 splits in K, say 2O = pp*, and there is a unique Z(2)-extension K-infinity of K which is unramified outside p. Let H be the Hilbert class field of K, and write H-infinity = HK infinity. Let M(H-infinity) be the maximal abelian 2-extension of H-infinity which is unramified outside the primes above p, and put X(H-infinity) = Gal(M(H-infinity)/H-infinity). We prove that X(H-infinity) is always a finitely generated Z(2)-module, by an elliptic analogue of Sinnott's cyclotomic argument. We then use this result to prove for the first time the weak p-adic Leopoldt conjecture for the compositum J(infinity) of K-infinity with arbitrary quadratic extensions J of H. We also prove some new cases of the finite generation of the Mordell-Weil group E(J(infinity)) modulo torsion of certain elliptic curves E with complex multiplication by O.

Abstract:In this paper we resolve a conjecture of Kresch and Tamvakis. Our result is the following. Theorem: For any positive integer $D$ and any integers $i,j$ $(0\leq i,j \leq D)$, the absolute value of the following hypergeometric series is at most 1: \begin{equation*} {_4F_3} \left[ \begin{array}{c} -i, \; i+1, \; -j, \; j+1 \\ 1, \; D+2, \; -D \end{array} ; 1 \right]. \end{equation*} To prove this theorem, we use the Biedenharn-Elliott identity, the theory of Leonard pairs, and the Perron-Frobenius theorem.

Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract:We confirm several conjectures of Sun involving quadratic residues modulo odd primes. For any prime p equivalent to 1 (mod 4) and integer a not equivalent to 0 (mod p), we prove that (-1)(vertical bar 1 <= k {ak(2)}(p)}vertical bar +vertical bar{(j, k) : 1 <= j < k <= p - 1/2 & {ak(2) - aj(2)}(p) > p/2}vertical bar equivalent to vertical bar{1 <= k < p/4 : (k/p) - (a/p)}vertical bar (mod 2), where (a/p) is the Legendre symbol, epsilon(p) and h(p) are the fundamental unit and the class number of the real quadratic field Q(root p) respectively, and {x}(p) is the least nonnegative residue of an integer x modulo p. Also, for any prime p equivalent to 3 (mod 4) and delta = 1, 2, we determine (-1)(vertical bar{(j, k): 1 <= j(delta T-k}(p)}vertical bar, where T-m denotes the triangular number m(m + 1)/2.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove Gukov-Pei-Putrov-Vafa's conjecture that the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants are radial limits of homological blocks, which are $ q $-series introduced by them for plumbed $ 3 $-manifolds with negative definite linking matrices. In our previous work, the author attributed this conjecture to the holomorphy of certain rational functions by developing an asymptotic formula based on the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. However, it is challenging to prove holomorphy for general plumbed manifolds. In this paper, we address this challenge using induction on a sequence of trees obtained by repeating "pruning trees."

Abstract:We give a noncomputational, elementary group-theoretic proof of the Zolotareff-Frobenius Theorem. We use no results from the theory of quadratic residues. Let A and k be coprime positive integers with k odd and greater than 1. By the symbol Z(h,k) we mean the sign of the permutation m induced on the residue classes modulo k obtained by multiplication by A. Theorem (Zolotareff-Frobenius). Zih,k) = (A/A:), the usual Jacobi symbol. Zolotareff [5] first proved this theorem for prime k. Frobenius, cf. [1], then found the general result and Lerch [2], Riesz [4] and Meyer [3] gave subsequent proofs. All these proofs of the general result are, to varying degrees, computational and it is our aim to give a noncomputational, elementary group-theoretic proof in the spirit of Zolotareff s original work. In the following, Sym (X) denotes the symmetric group on the finite set X. We also write sgn tr = 1 or 1 according as tr is an even or odd permutation of X, so that sgn: Sym(X) —» {1,-1} is the usual group homomorphism.
