We focus on two main cases, dense subchains of the real numbers, and uncountable dense chains of higher (regular) cardinalities. We also give a Fraenkel-Mostowski model which illustrates the role of the axiom of choice in one of the key proofs.

Abstract:The structure ${\cal C}_2:=(1^\infty,\le,\le_1,\le_2)$, introduced and first analyzed in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL), is shown to be elementary recursive. Here, $1^\infty$ denotes the proof-theoretic ordinal of the fragment $\Pi^1_1$-$\mathrm{CA}_0$ of second order number theory, or equivalently the set theory $\mathrm{KPl}_0$, which axiomatizes limits of models of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity. The partial orderings $\le_1$ and $\le_2$ denote the relations of $\Sigma_1$- and $\Sigma_2$-elementary substructure, respectively. In a subsequent article we will show that the structure ${\cal C}_2$ comprises the core of the structure ${\cal R}_2$ of pure elementary patterns of resemblance of order $2$. In Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) the stage has been set by showing that the least ordinal containing a cover of each pure pattern of order $2$ is $1^\infty$. However, it is not obvious from Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) that ${\cal C}_2$ is an elementary recursive structure. This is shown here through a considerable disentanglement in the description of connectivity components of $\le_1$ and $\le_2$. The key to and starting point of our analysis is the apparatus of ordinal arithmetic developed in Wilken 2007 (APAL) and in Section 5 of Carlson and Wilken 2012 (JSL), which was enhanced in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) specifically for the analysis of ${\cal C}_2$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}(R,S)$ denote the class of all matrices of zeros and ones with row sum vector $R$ and column sum vector~$S$. We introduce the notion of an inversion in a $(0,1)$--matrix. This definition extends the standard notion of an inversion of a permutation, in the sense that both notions agree on the class of permutation matrices. We prove that the number of inversions in a $(0,1)$--matrix is monotonic with respect to the secondary Bruhat order of the class $\mathcal{A}(R,S)$. We apply this result in establishing the maximum length of a chain in the Bruhat order of the class $\mathcal{A}(n,2)$ of $(0,1)$--matrices of order $n$ in which every row and every column has a sum of~$2$. We give algorithmic constructions of chains of maximum length in the Bruhat order of $\mathcal{A}(n,2)$.

Abstract:We introduce the abstract notion of a chain, which is a sequence of $n$ points in the plane, ordered by $x$-coordinates, so that the edge between any two consecutive points is unavoidable as far as triangulations are concerned. A general theory of the structural properties of chains is developed, alongside a general understanding of their number of triangulations. We also describe an intriguing new and concrete configuration, which we call the Koch chain due to its similarities to the Koch curve. A specific construction based on Koch chains is then shown to have $\Omega(9.08^n)$ triangulations. This is a significant improvement over the previous and long-standing lower bound of $\Omega(8.65^n)$ for the maximum number of triangulations of planar point sets.

Abstract:We extend the chain algebra, originally defined in \cite{GN} for finite distributive lattices to that of finite pure posets. We show this algebra corresponds to the Ehrhart ring of a (0,1)-polytope, termed the chain polytope, and characterize the indecomposability of this polytope. Furthermore, we prove the normality of the chain algebra, describe its canonical module, and extend one of main results from \cite{GN} by computing its Krull dimension. For width-2 pure posets, we determine the algebra's regularity and conditions for it to be Gorenstein or nearly Gorenstein.

Abstract:We study the existence and the distribution of "long" chains in the Weihrauch degrees, mostly focusing on chains with uncountable cofinality. We characterize when such chains have an upper bound and prove that there are no cofinal chains (of any order type) in the Weihrauch degrees. Furthermore, we show that the existence of coinitial sequences of non-zero degrees is equivalent to $\mathrm{CH}$. Finally, we explore the extendibility of antichains, providing some necessary conditions for maximality.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to give new constructions of linear orders which are minimal with respect to being non-$\sigma$-scattered. Specifically, we will show that Jensen's principle $\diamondsuit$ implies that there is a minimal Countryman line, answering a question of Baumgartner. We also produce the first consistent examples of minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality greater than $\aleph_1$, as given a successor cardinal $\kappa^+$, we obtain such linear orderings of cardinality $\kappa^+$ with the additional property that their square is the union of $\kappa$-many chains. We give two constructions: directly building such examples using forcing, and also deriving their existence from combinatorial principles. The latter approach shows that such minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality $\kappa^+$ exist for every cardinal $\kappa$ in Gödel's constructible universe, and also (using work of Rinot) that examples must exist at successors of singular strong limit cardinals in the absence of inner models satisfying the existence of a measurable cardinal $\mu$ of Mitchell order $\mu^{++}$.

Abstract:The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

Maximal chains in lattices from graph associahedra: Tamari to the weak order

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximal chains of lattices which generalizes both the weak order and the Tamari lattice: certain lattices of maximal tubings. A maximal tubing poset $\mathfrak{L}(G)$ is defined for any graph $G$, but for the graphs we consider in this paper, the poset is a lattice. Just as the weak order is an orientation of the $1$-skeleton of the permutahedron and the Tamari of the associahedron, each tubing lattice is an orientation of the $1$-skeleton of a graph associahedron. The partial order on $\mathfrak{L}(G)$ is given by a projection from $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to $\mathfrak{L}(G)$. In particular, when the graph is the complete graph, the graph associahedron is the the permutahedron, and when it is the path graph, it is the Stasheff associahedron. Our main results are for lollipop graphs, graphs that ``interpolate'' between the path and the complete graphs. For lollipop graphs, the lattices consist of permutations which satisfy a generalization of $312$-avoiding. The maximum length chains correspond to partially shiftable tableaux under the Edelman-Greene's Coxeter-Knuth bijection. We also consider functions defined analogously to Stanley's symmetric function for the maximum length chains and find their expansion in terms of Young quasisymmetric Schur functions.

Abstract:Assume $\text{MA}(\kappa)$. We show that for every real chain of size $\kappa$ in the quotient Boolean algebra $P(\omega)/fin$ we can find an almost chain of representatives such that every $n\in\omega$ oscillates at most three times along the almost chain. This is used to show that for every countable discrete extension of a separable compact line $K$ of weight $\kappa$ there exists an extension operator $E:C(K)\longrightarrow C(L)$ of norm at most three.

Abstract:Littlewood polynomials are polynomials with each of their coefficients in $\{-1,1\}$. A sequence of Littlewood polynomials that satisfies a remarkable flatness property on the unit circle of the complex plane is given by the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials. Let $P_k$ and $Q_k$ denote the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials of degree $n-1$ with $n:=2^k$. Abstract:It is known that a Bruen chain of the three-dimensional projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ exists for every odd prime power $q$ at most $37$, except for $q=29$. It was shown by Cardinali et. al (2005) that Bruen chains do not exist for $41\le q\leq 49$. We develop a model, based on finite fields, which allows us to extend this result to $41\leqslant q \leqslant 97$, thereby adding more evidence to the conjecture that Bruen chains do not exist for $q>37$. Furthermore, we show that Bruen chains can be realised precisely as the $(q+1)/2$-cliques of a two related, yet distinct, undirected simple graphs.

Rigid-Recurrent Sequences for Actions of Finite Exponent Groups

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to better understand the coexistence of rigidity, weak mixing, and recurrence by constructing thin sets in the product of countably many copies of the finite cyclic group of order q. A Kronecker-type set K is a subset of this group on which every continuous function into the complex unit circle equals the restriction, to K, of a character in the group's Pontryagin dual. Ackelsberg proves that if, for all q > 1, there exists a perfect Kronecker-type set generating a dense subgroup, then there exist large rigidity sequences for weak mixing systems of actions by countable discrete abelian groups. Ackelsberg shows the existence of such sets for prime values of q, while we construct them for all q > 1.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop some new classes of methods to study the Scholz conjecture on addition chains. It turns out that the exponents of numbers of the form $2^n-1$ largely determine the length of the shortest addition chain for number producing $2^n-1$. Exploiting the notion of carries, we obtain improved upper bounds for the length of the shortest addition chains $\iota(2^n-1)$ producing $2^n-1$. Most notably, we show that if $2^n-1$ has carries of degree at most $$\kappa(2^n-1)=\frac{1}{2}(\iota(n)-\lfloor \frac{\log n}{\log 2}\rfloor+\sum \limits_{j=1}^{\lfloor \frac{\log n}{\log 2}\rfloor}\{\frac{n}{2^j}\})$$ then the inequality $$\iota(2^n-1)\leq n+1+\sum \limits_{j=1}^{\lfloor \frac{\log n}{\log 2}\rfloor}\bigg(\{\frac{n}{2^j}\}-\xi(n,j)\bigg)+\iota(n)$$ holds for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$ with $n\geq 4$, where $\iota(\cdot)$ denotes the length of the shortest addition chain producing $\cdot$, $\{\cdot\}$ denotes the fractional part of $\cdot$ and where $\xi(n,1):=\{\frac{n}{2}\}$ with $\xi(n,2)=\{\frac{1}{2}\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor\}$ and so on.
