Abstract:The purpose of this article is to give new constructions of linear orders which are minimal with respect to being non-$\sigma$-scattered. Specifically, we will show that Jensen's principle $\diamondsuit$ implies that there is a minimal Countryman line, answering a question of Baumgartner. We also produce the first consistent examples of minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality greater than $\aleph_1$, as given a successor cardinal $\kappa^+$, we obtain such linear orderings of cardinality $\kappa^+$ with the additional property that their square is the union of $\kappa$-many chains. We give two constructions: directly building such examples using forcing, and also deriving their existence from combinatorial principles. The latter approach shows that such minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality $\kappa^+$ exist for every cardinal $\kappa$ in Gödel's constructible universe, and also (using work of Rinot) that examples must exist at successors of singular strong limit cardinals in the absence of inner models satisfying the existence of a measurable cardinal $\mu$ of Mitchell order $\mu^{++}$.

Abstract:Given a function $f:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R$, call a decreasing sequence $x_1>x_2>x_3>\cdots$ $f$-bad if $f(x_1)>f(x_2)>f(x_3)>\cdots$, and call the function $f$ "ordinal decreasing" if there exist no infinite $f$-bad sequences. We prove the following result, which generalizes results of Erickson et al. (2022) and Bufetov et al. (2024): Given ordinal decreasing functions $f,g_1,\ldots,g_k,s$ that are everywhere larger than $0$, define the recursive algorithm "$M(x)$: if $x<0$ return $f(x)$, else return $g_1(-M(x-g_2(-M(x-\cdots-g_k(-M(x-s(x)))\cdots))))$". Then $M(x)$ halts and is ordinal decreasing for all $x \in \mathbb{R}$. More specifically, given an ordinal decreasing function $f$, denote by $o(f)$ the ordinal height of the root of the tree of $f$-bad sequences. Then we prove that, for $k\ge 2$, the function $M(x)$ defined by the above algorithm satisfies $o(M)\le\varphi_{k-1}(\gamma+o(s)+1)$, where $\gamma$ is the smallest ordinal such that $\max{\{o(s),o(f),o(g_1), \ldots, o(g_k)\}}<\varphi_{k-1}(\gamma)$.

Abstract:We generalise Delhommé's result that each tree-automatic ordinal is strictly below \omega^\omega^\omega{} by showing that any tree-automatic linear ordering has FC-rank strictly below \omega^\omega. We further investigate a restricted form of tree-automaticity and prove that every linear ordering which admits a tree-automatic presentation of branching complexity at most k has FC-rank strictly below \omega^k.

Abstract:Assume $\text{MA}(\kappa)$. We show that for every real chain of size $\kappa$ in the quotient Boolean algebra $P(\omega)/fin$ we can find an almost chain of representatives such that every $n\in\omega$ oscillates at most three times along the almost chain. This is used to show that for every countable discrete extension of a separable compact line $K$ of weight $\kappa$ there exists an extension operator $E:C(K)\longrightarrow C(L)$ of norm at most three.

Abstract:It is well-known that if $(A,B)$ is an $\tfrac{\varepsilon}{2}$-regular pair (in the sense of Szemerédi) then there exist sets $A'\subset A$ and $B'\subset B'$ with $|A'|\leq \varepsilon|A|$ and $|B'|\leq \varepsilon|B|$ so that the degrees of all vertices in $A\setminus A'$ differ by at most $\varepsilon|B|$ and the degrees of all vertices in $B\setminus B'$ differ by at most $\varepsilon|A|$. We call such a property "$\varepsilon$-degularity". This leads to the notion of an "$\varepsilon$-degular" partition of a graph in the same way as the definition of $\varepsilon$-regular pairs leads to the notion of $\varepsilon$-regular partitions. We show that there exist graphs in which any $\varepsilon$-degular partition requires the number of clusters to be $\mathrm{tower}(\Theta(\varepsilon^{-1/3}))$. That is, even though degularity is a substantial relaxation of regularity, in general one cannot improve much on the bounds that come with Szemerédi's regularity lemma.

The weakness of finding descending sequences in ill-founded linear orders

Abstract:We explore the Weihrauch degree of the problems ``find a bad sequence in a non-well quasi order'' ($\mathsf{BS}$) and ``find a descending sequence in an ill-founded linear order'' ($\mathsf{DS}$). We prove that $\mathsf{DS}$ is strictly Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{BS}$, correcting our mistaken claim in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. This is done by separating their respective first-order parts. On the other hand, we show that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have the same finitary and deterministic parts, confirming that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have very similar uniform computational strength. We prove that König's lemma $\mathsf{KL}$ and the problem $\mathsf{wList}_{2^{\mathbb{N}},\leq\omega}$ of enumerating a given non-empty countable closed subset of $2^{\mathbb{N}}$ are not Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{DS}$ or $\mathsf{BS}$, resolving two main open questions raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. We also answer the question, raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.10968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.10968">arXiv:1804.10968</a>], on the existence of a ``parallel quotient'' operator, and study the behavior of $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ under the quotient with some known problems.

Abstract:The structure ${\cal C}_2:=(1^\infty,\le,\le_1,\le_2)$, introduced and first analyzed in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL), is shown to be elementary recursive. Here, $1^\infty$ denotes the proof-theoretic ordinal of the fragment $\Pi^1_1$-$\mathrm{CA}_0$ of second order number theory, or equivalently the set theory $\mathrm{KPl}_0$, which axiomatizes limits of models of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity. The partial orderings $\le_1$ and $\le_2$ denote the relations of $\Sigma_1$- and $\Sigma_2$-elementary substructure, respectively. In a subsequent article we will show that the structure ${\cal C}_2$ comprises the core of the structure ${\cal R}_2$ of pure elementary patterns of resemblance of order $2$. In Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) the stage has been set by showing that the least ordinal containing a cover of each pure pattern of order $2$ is $1^\infty$. However, it is not obvious from Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) that ${\cal C}_2$ is an elementary recursive structure. This is shown here through a considerable disentanglement in the description of connectivity components of $\le_1$ and $\le_2$. The key to and starting point of our analysis is the apparatus of ordinal arithmetic developed in Wilken 2007 (APAL) and in Section 5 of Carlson and Wilken 2012 (JSL), which was enhanced in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) specifically for the analysis of ${\cal C}_2$.

Abstract:This paper presents a new proof that if k^alpha is irrational then the sequence floor(alpha + log_k(n)) is not k-regular. Unlike previous proofs, the methods used do not rely on automata or language theoretic concepts. The paper also proves the stronger statement that if k^\alpha is irrational then the generating function in k non-commuting variables associated with floor(alpha + log_k(n)) is not algebraic.

Abstract:For a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ we investigate the partial order $\langle {\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}) ,\subset \rangle$, where ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}):=\{ f[X]: f\in \mathop{\rm Emb}\nolimits ({\mathbb X})\}$. Here we consider uncountable ordinals. Since $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is isomorphic to the direct product $\prod _{i=1}^n (\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta _i}))^{s_i}$, where $\alpha = \omega ^{\delta _n}s_n+\dots +\omega ^{\delta _1}s_1+ m$ is the Cantor normal form for $\alpha $, the analysis is reduced to the investigation of the posets of the form ${\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta })$. It turns out that, in ZFC, either the poset $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is $\sigma$-closed and completely embeds $P(\omega )/\mathop{\rm Fin}$ and, hence, preserves $\omega _1$ and forces $|{\mathfrak c}|=|{\mathfrak h}|$, or, otherwise, completely embeds the algebra $P(\lambda )/[\lambda ]^{<\lambda }$, for some regular $\omega <\lambda \leq \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta )$, and collapses $\omega _2$ to $\omega $. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}(R,S)$ denote the class of all matrices of zeros and ones with row sum vector $R$ and column sum vector~$S$. We introduce the notion of an inversion in a $(0,1)$--matrix. This definition extends the standard notion of an inversion of a permutation, in the sense that both notions agree on the class of permutation matrices. We prove that the number of inversions in a $(0,1)$--matrix is monotonic with respect to the secondary Bruhat order of the class $\mathcal{A}(R,S)$. We apply this result in establishing the maximum length of a chain in the Bruhat order of the class $\mathcal{A}(n,2)$ of $(0,1)$--matrices of order $n$ in which every row and every column has a sum of~$2$. We give algorithmic constructions of chains of maximum length in the Bruhat order of $\mathcal{A}(n,2)$.

Simple and tight complexity lower bounds for solving Rabin games

Abstract:We give a simple proof that assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), determining the winner of a Rabin game cannot be done in time $2^{o(k \log k)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$, where $k$ is the number of pairs of vertex subsets involved in the winning condition and $n$ is the vertex count of the game graph. While this result follows from the lower bounds provided by Calude et al [SIAM J. Comp. 2022], our reduction is simpler and arguably provides more insight into the complexity of the problem. In fact, the analogous lower bounds discussed by Calude et al, for solving Muller games and multidimensional parity games, follow as simple corollaries of our approach. Our reduction also highlights the usefulness of a certain pivot problem -- Permutation SAT -- which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We study Medvedev reducibility in the context of set theory — specifically, forcing and large cardinal hypotheses. Answering a question of Hamkins and Li [HL∞] , we show that the Medvedev degrees of countable ordinals are far from linearly ordered in multiple ways, our main result here being that there is a club of ordinals which is an antichain with respect to Medvedev reducibility. We then generalize these results to arbitrary "reasonably-definable" reducibilities, under appropriate set-theoretic hypotheses.We then turn from ordinals to general structures. We show that some of the results above yield characterizations of counterexamples to Vaught's conjecture; another applies to all situations, assigning an ordinal to any reasonable class of structures and "measure" on that class. We end by discussing some directions for future research.

Abstract:We consider a very weak chain condition for a poset, that is the absence of subsets which are order isomorphic to the set of real numbers in their natural ordering; we study generalised radical groups in which this finiteness condition is set on the poset of subgroups which do not have certain properties which are generalizations of normality. This completes many previous results which considered (apparently) stronger chain conditions.

Abstract:The notion of noncrossing partitions of a partially ordered set (poset) is introduced here. When the poset in question is $[n]=\{1,2,\dots, n\}$ with the complete order of natural numbers, conventional noncrossing partitions arise. The minimum possible number of chains contained in a noncrossing partition of a poset clearly reflects the structural complexity of the poset. For the poset $[n]$, this number is just one. However, for a generic poset, it is a challenging task to determine the minimum number. Our main result in the paper is some characterization of this quantity.
