Abstract:We consider a very weak chain condition for a poset, that is the absence of subsets which are order isomorphic to the set of real numbers in their natural ordering; we study generalised radical groups in which this finiteness condition is set on the poset of subgroups which do not have certain properties which are generalizations of normality. This completes many previous results which considered (apparently) stronger chain conditions.

Abstract:We prove for $m\geq1$ and $n\geq5$ that the level $m$ congruence subgroup $B_n[m]$ of the braid group $B_n$ associated to the integral Burau representation $B_n\to\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ is generated by $m$th powers of half-twists and the braid Torelli group. This solves a problem of Margalit, generalizing work of Assion, Brendle--Margalit, Nakamura, Stylianakis and Wajnryb.

Abstract:We obtain criteria for when a ring with enough idempotents is left/right artinian or noetherian in terms of local criteria defined by the associated complete set of idempotents for the ring. We apply these criteria to object unital category graded rings in general and, in particular, to the class of skew category algebras. Thereby, we generalize results by Nastasescu-van Oystaeyen, Bell, Park, and Zelmanov from the group graded case to groupoid, and in some cases category, gradings.

Bounding the degree of generic sharp transitivity

Abstract:We show that a generically sharply $t$-transitive permutation group of finite Morley rank on a set of rank $r$ satisfies $t\le r+2$ provided the pointwise stabilizer of a generic $(t-1)$-tuple is an $L$-group, which holds, for example, when this stabilizer is solvable or when $r\le 5$. This makes progress on the Borovik-Cherlin conjecture that every generically $(r+2)$-transitive permutation group of finite Morley rank on a set of rank $r$ is of the form $\operatorname{PGL}_{r+1}(F)$ acting naturally on $\mathbb{P}^r(F)$. Our proof is assembled from three key ingredients that are independent of the main theorem - these address actions of $\operatorname{Alt}(n)$ on $L$-groups of finite Morley rank, generically $2$-transitive actions with abelian point stabilizers, and simple groups of rank $6$.

Abstract:This work establishes a condition that determines when strong generation in the bounded derived category of a Noetherian $J\textrm{-}2$ scheme is preserved by the derived pushforward of a proper morphism. Consequently, we can produce upper bounds on the Rouquier dimension of the bounded derived category, and applications concerning affine varieties are studied. In the process, a necessary and sufficient constraint is observed for when a tensor-exact functor between rigidly compactly generated tensor triangulated categories preserves strong $\oplus$-generators.

Invariable generation of certain branch groups

Abstract:We investigate invariable generation among key examples of branch groups. In particular, we prove that all generating sets of the torsion Grigorchuk groups, of the branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups and of the torsion multi-EGS groups (which are natural generalisations of the Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups) are invariable generating sets. Furthermore, for the first Grigorchuk group and the torsion Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups, every finitely generated subgroup has a finite invariable generating set. We also show that a branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki group is almost $\frac32$-generated, that the diameter of its generating subgraph $\Delta(G)$ is 2 and its total domination number is 2. Some of our results apply to groups for which every maximal subgroup is normal. This class, known as $\mathcal{MN}$, includes all nilpotent groups.

Abstract:We call a semigroup $\mathcal{R}$-noetherian if it satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal right ideals, or, equivalently, the ascending chain condition on $\mathcal{R}$-classes. We investigate the behaviour of the property of being $\mathcal{R}$-noetherian under the following standard semigroup-theoretic constructions: semidirect products, Schützenberger products, free products, Rees matrix semigroups, Brandt extensions, Bruck-Reilly extensions and semilattices of semigroups.

Chain-dependent Conditions in Extremal Set Theory

Abstract:In extremal set theory our usual goal is to find the maximal size of a family of subsets of an $n$-element set satisfying a condition. A condition is called chain-dependent, if it is satisfied for a family if and only if it is satisfied for its intersections with the $n!$ full chains. We introduce a method to handle problems with such conditions, then show how it can be used to prove three classic theorems. Then, a theorem about families containing no two sets such that $A\subset B$ and $\lambda \cdot |A| \le |B|$ is proved. Finally, we investigate problems where instead of the size of the family, the number of $\ell$-chains is maximized. Our method is to define a weight function on the sets (or $\ell$-chains) and use it in a double counting argument involving full chains.

Abstract:For a general Martens-special chain of cycles $\Gamma$ of type $k$ we prove that the gonality is equal to $k+2$. Although $\dim (W^1_{k+2} (\Gamma))=k$ we prove that $w^1_{k+2}(\Gamma)=0$. We also compute the gonality sequence of $\Gamma$ and we prove it is divisorial complete. We prove that a general Martens-special discrete chain of cycles $G$ of type $k$ has the same gonality sequence.

von Neumann Algebras of Thompson-like Groups from Cloning Systems II

Abstract:Let $(G_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ be a sequence of groups equipped with a $d$-ary cloning system and denote by $\mathscr{T}_d(G_*)$ the resulting Thompson-like group. In previous work joint with Zaremsky, we obtained structural results concerning the group von Neumann algebra of $\mathscr{T}_d(G_*)$, denoted by $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$. Under some natural assumptions on the $d$-ary cloning system, we proved that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ factor. With a few additional natural assumptions, we proved that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is, moreover, a McDuff factor. In this paper, we further analyze the structure of $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, in particular the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, where $F_d$ is the smallest of the Higman--Thompson groups. First, we prove that if the $d$-ary cloning system is "diverse", then the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is irreducible, a considerable improvement of the result that $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ factor. This allows us to compute the normalizer of $L(F_d)$ in $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$, which turns out to be "trivial" in the diverse case, implying that the inclusion is also singular. Then we prove that the inclusion $L(F_d) \subseteq L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ satisfies the weak asymptotic homomorphism property, which yields another proof that the inclusion is singular. Finally, we finish the paper with an application: Using irreducibility, our conditions for when $L(\mathscr{T}_d(G_*))$ is a type $\text{II}_1$ McDuff factor, and the fact that $F_d$ is character rigid (in the sense of Peterson), we prove that the groups $F_d$ are McDuff (in the sense of Deprez-Vaes).

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and a prime $p$, we establish the sieve formula, which is a congruence containing as summands numbers of chains of $p$-subgroups of $G$ of certain orders. This generalises the Theorem of Sylow-Frobenius, using Wielandt's approach. Its name stems from the sieve formula from set theory because of formal similarities.

A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ will be called $\mathrm{K}$-$\mathbb{P}_{t}$-subnormal in $G$ if there exists a chain of subgroups $H = H_{0} \leq H_{1} \leq \cdots \leq H_{m-1} \leq H_{m} = G$ such that either $H_{i-1}$ is normal in $H_{i}$ or $|H_{i} : H_{i-1}|$ is a some prime $p$ and $p-1$ is not divisible by the $(t+1)$th powers of primes for every $i = 1,\ldots , n$. In this work, properties of $\mathrm{K}$-$\mathbb{P}_{t}$-subnormal subgroups and classes of groups with Sylow $\mathrm{K}$-$\mathbb{P}_{t}$-subnormal subgroups are obtained.

Thresholds for zero-sums with small cross numbers in abelian groups

Abstract:For an additive group $\Gamma$ the sequence $S = (g_1, \ldots, g_t)$ of elements of $\Gamma$ is a zero-sum sequence if $g_1 + \cdots + g_t = 0_\Gamma$. The cross number of $S$ is defined to be the sum $\sum_{i=1}^k 1/|g_i|$, where $|g_i|$ denotes the order of $g_i$ in $\Gamma$. Call $S$ good if it contains a zero-sum subsequence with cross number at most 1. In 1993, Geroldinger proved that if $\Gamma$ is abelian then every length $|\Gamma|$ sequence of its elements is good, generalizing a 1989 result of Lemke and Kleitman that had proved an earlier conjecture of Erdős and Lemke. In 1989 Chung re-proved the Lemke and Kleitman result by applying a theorem of graph pebbling, and in 2005, Elledge and Hurlbert used graph pebbling to re-prove and generalize Geroldinger's result. Here we use probabilistic theorems from graph pebbling to derive a threshold version of Geroldinger's theorem for abelian groups of a certain form. Specifically, we prove that if $p_1, \ldots, p_d$ are (not necessarily distinct) primes and $\Gamma_k$ has the form $\prod_{i=1}^d {\mathbb Z}_{p_i^k}$ then there is a function $\tau=\tau(k)$ (which we specify in Theorem 4) with the following property: if $t-\tau\rightarrow\infty$ as $k\rightarrow\infty$ then the probability that $S$ is good in $\Gamma_k$ tends to 1.

If $M_n < M_{n-1} < \ldots < M_1 < M_{0}=G $ where $M_i$ is a maximal subgroup of $M_{i-1}$ for all $i=1, \ldots ,n$, then $M_n $ ($n > 0$) is an \emph{$n$-maximal subgroup} of $G$. A subgroup $M$ of $G$ is called \emph{modular} if the following conditions are held: (i) $\langle X, M \cap Z \rangle=\langle X, M \rangle \cap Z$ for all $X \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $X \leq Z$, and (ii) $\langle M, Y \cap Z \rangle=\langle M, Y \rangle \cap Z$ for all $Y \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $M \leq Z$. Abstract:We study the problem of existence of maximal chains in the Turing degrees. We show that:1. ZF + DC + "There exists no maximal chain in the Turing degrees" is equiconsistent with ZFC + "There exists an inaccessible cardinal";2. For all a is an element of 2(omega), (omega(1))(L[u]) = omega(1) if and only if there exists a Pi(1)(1)[a] maximal chain in the Turing degrees.As a corollary, ZFC + "There exists an inaccessible cardinal" is equiconsistent with ZFC + "There is no (boldface) Pi(1)(1) maximal chain of Turing degrees".
On $p$-groups with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:We study the maximal subgroups of branch groups and obtain a criterion that ensures that certain spinal groups are contained in the class $\mathcal{MF}$ of groups with all maximal subgroups of finite index. This allows us to construct branch groups within $\mathcal{MF}$ exhibiting novel properties, for example groups that possess non-normal maximal subgroups. Furthermore, we give new concrete examples of branch groups outside $\mathcal{MF}$, with explicitly given maximal subgroups of infinite index. Most prominently, we construct a periodic branch group outside $\mathcal{MF}$.
