Abstract:A folklore conjecture asserts the existence of a constant $c_n > 0$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \sim c_n X$ as $X\to \infty$, where $\mathcal{F}_n(X)$ is the set of degree $n$ extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with discriminant bounded by $X$. This conjecture is known if $n \leq 5$, but even the weaker conjecture that there exists an absolute constant $C\geq 1$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \ll_n X^C$ remains unknown and apparently out of reach. Here, we make progress on this weaker conjecture (which we term the "uniform exponent conjecture") in two ways. First, we reduce the general problem to that of studying relative extensions of number fields whose Galois group is an almost simple group in a natural primitive permutation representation. Second, for almost all such groups, we prove the strongest known upper bound on the number of such extensions. These bounds have the effect of resolving the uniform exponent conjecture for solvable groups, sporadic groups, exceptional groups, and classical groups of bounded rank.

Abstract:It is shown that there exists a nontrivial uniform algebra that is Dirichlet on its maximal ideal space and has a dense set of elements that are exponentials. This answers a 64-year-old question of John Wermer and a 16-year-old question of Garth Dales and Joel Feinstein. Our example is P(X) for a certain compact set X in complex Euclidean 2-space ($\mathbb{C}^2$). It is also shown that there exists a logmodular uniform algebra with proper Shilov boundary but with no nontrivial Gleason parts. This answers a modified form of another 64-year-old question of Wermer.

On the equational theory of finite modular lattices

Abstract:It is shown that there is $N$ such that there is no algorithm to decide for identities in at most $N$ variables validity in the class of finite modular lattices. This is based on Slobodskoi's result that the Restricted Word Problem is unsolvable for the class of finite groups and relies on Freese's technique of capturing group presentations within free modular lattices.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore an abstraction of uniform integrability in vector lattices and demonstrate its application by providing a positive solution to an open question posed by Kuo, Rodda, and Watson. Specifically, we show that for finite p and with T as a conditionally expectation operator, spaces Lp are sequentially complete. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a de La Vallé Poussin Theorem does not hold in the general setting of vector lattices.

Abstract:We present a general framework for thermodynamic limits and its applications to a variety of models. In particular we will identify criteria such that the limits are uniform in a parameter. All results are illustrated with the example of eigenvalue counting functions converging to the integrated density of states. In this case, the convergence is uniform in the energy.

Independence of the Diophantine exponents associated with linear subspaces

Abstract:We elaborate on a problem raised by Schmidt in 1967 which generalizes the theory of classical Diophantine approximation to subspaces of $\R^n$. We consider Diophantine exponents for linear subspaces of $\R^n$ which generalize the irrationality measure for real numbers. We prove here that we have no smooth relations among some functions associated to these exponents. To establish this result, we construct subspaces for which we are able to compute the exponents.

Abstract:In this paper we improve estimates of Jarnik and Apfelbeck for uniform Diophantine exponents of transposed systems of linear forms and generalize to the case of an arbitrary system the estimates of Laurent and Bugeaud for individual exponents. The method proposed also gives a better constant in Mahler's transference theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we prove inequalities for multiplicative analogues of Diophantine exponents, similar to the ones known in the classical case. Particularly, we show that a matrix is badly approximable if and only if its transpose is badly approximable and establish some inequalities connecting multiplicative exponents with ordinary ones.

Abstract:In this article we study two fundamental problems on exponential sums via randomization of frequencies with stochastic processes. These are the Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem, and $L^{2n}(\mathbb{T}), \ n\in \mathbb{N}$ norms of exponential sums, which can also be interpreted as solutions of diophantine equations or lattice points on surfaces. We establish connections to the well known problems on lattice points in regions such as the Dirichlet divisor problem.

Abstract:Let L be a truncated Archimedean vector lattice whose truncation is denoted by *. In a recent paper, we proved that there exists a locally compact Hausdorff space X such that L is a lattice isomorphic with a truncated vector lattice of functions in C ∞ ( X ) whose truncation is provided by meet with some characteristic function on X . This representation, no matter how interesting it is, has a major drawback, namely, C ∞ ( X ) need not be a vector lattice, unless X is extremally disconnected. The main purpose of this paper is to remedy this shortcoming by proving that, indeed, an extremally disconnected locally compact space X can be found such that L can be seen as an order dense vector sublattice of C ∞ ( X ) whose truncation is provided, again, by meet with some characteristic function on X .

Universality theorems for zeros of random real polynomials with fixed coefficients

Abstract:Consider a monic polynomial of degree $n$ whose subleading coefficients are independent, identically distributed, nondegenerate random variables having zero mean, unit variance, and finite moments of all orders, and let $m \geq 0$ be a fixed integer. We prove that such a random monic polynomial has exactly $m$ real zeros with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$ as $n\to \infty$ through integers of the same parity as $m$. More generally, we determine conditions under which a similar asymptotic formula describes the corresponding probability for families of random real polynomials with multiple fixed coefficients. Our work extends well-known universality results of Dembo, Poonen, Shao, and Zeitouni, who considered the family of real polynomials with all coefficients random. As a number-theoretic consequence of these results, we deduce that an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $n$ has exactly $m$ real Galois conjugates with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$, when such $\alpha$ are ordered by the heights of their minimal polynomials.

Abstract:Orders in number fields provide interesting examples of lattices. We ask: how are lattices arising from orders in number fields distributed? An order $\mathcal{O}$ of absolute discriminant $\Delta$ in a degree $n$ number field has $n$ successive minima $1 = \lambda_0 \leq \lambda_1 \leq \dots \leq \lambda_{n-1}$. For $3 \leq n \leq 5$ and many $G \subseteq S_n$, we compute the distribution of the points $(\log_{ \Delta }\lambda_{1},\dots,\log_{ \Delta }\lambda_{n-1}) \in \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ as $\mathcal{O}$ ranges across orders in degree $n$ fields with Galois group $G$ as $\Delta \rightarrow \infty$. In many cases, we find that the distribution is given by a piecewise linear expression and is supported on a finite union of polytopes.

Partial divisibility of random sets and powers of completely monotone functions

Abstract:In this article, we study exponents which preserve complete monotonicity of functions on lattices. We prove that for any completely monotone function $f$ on a finite lattice, $f^\alpha$ is completely monotone for all $\alpha\geq c$, where $c$ is explicitly described. For finite distributive lattices we show that the bound $c$ is sharp. Important examples of completely monotone functions are void functionals of random closed sets. We prove that if $V_{\mathcal{X}}$ is the void functional of a random subset $\mathcal{X}$ of $[n]$, then $V_{\mathcal{X}}^\alpha$ is void functional of some random closed set for $\alpha\geq n-1$. The results are analogous to the result of FitzGerald and Horn on Hadamard powers of positive semi-definite matrices. Also, we study the question of approximating an $m$-divisible random set by infinitely divisible random sets, and its generalization to lattices.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to establishing an optimal approximation exponent for the action of an irreducible uniform lattice subgroup of a product group on its proper factors. Previously optimal approximation exponents for lattice actions on homogeneous spaces were established under the assumption that the restriction of the automorphic representation to the stability group is suitably tempered. However, for irreducible lattices in semisimple algebraic groups, either this property does not hold or it amounts to an instance of the Ramanujan-Petersson-Selberg conjecture. Sarnak's Density Hypothesis and its variants bounding the multiplicities of irreducible representations occurring in the decomposition of the automorphic representation can be viewed as a weakening of the temperedness property. A refined form of this hypothesis has recently been established for uniform irreducible arithmetic congruence lattices arising from quaternion algebras. We employ this result in order to establish - unconditionally - an optimal approximation exponent for the actions of these lattices on the associated symmetric spaces. We also give a general spectral criterion for the optimality of the approximation exponent for irreducible uniform lattices in a product of arbitrary Gelfand pairs. Our methods involve utilizing the multiplicity bounds in the pre-trace formula, establishing refined estimates of the spherical transforms, and carrying out an elaborate spectral analysis that bounds the Hilbert-Schmidt norms of carefully balanced geometric convolution operators.

Abstract:We establish an upper bound on the number of real multiquadratic fields that admit a universal quadratic lattice of a given rank, or contain a given amount of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units, obtaining density zero statements. We also study the structure of indecomposable elements in real biquadratic fields, and compute a system of indecomposable elements modulo totally positive units for some families of real biquadratic fields.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Dedekind domain whose field of fractions $K$ is a global field. Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional separable $K$-algebra and let $\Lambda$ be an $\mathcal{O}$-order in $A$. Let $n$ be a positive integer and suppose that $X$ is a $\Lambda$-lattice such that $K \otimes_{\mathcal{O}} X$ is free of rank $n$ over $A$. Then $X$ contains a (non-unique) free $\Lambda$-sublattice of rank $n$. The main result of the present article is to show there exists such a sublattice $Y$ such that the generalised module index $[X : Y]_{\mathcal{O}}$ has explicit upper bounds with respect to division that are independent of $X$ and can be chosen to satisfy certain conditions. We give examples of applications to the approximation of normal integral bases and strong Minkowski units, and to the Galois module structure of rational points over abelian varieties.

Abstract:It is, by now, classical that lattices in higher rank semisimple groups have various rigidity properties. In this work, we add another such rigidity property to the list: uniform stability with respect to the family of unitary operators on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces equipped with submultiplicative norms. Namely, we show that for (most) high-rank lattices, every finite-dimensional unitary "almost-representation" of $\Gamma$ is a small deformation of a (true) unitary representation. This extends a result of Kazhdan (1983) for amenable groups and of Burger-Ozawa-Thom (2013) for SL(n,Z) (for n>2). Towards this goal, we first build an elaborate cohomological theory capturing the obstruction to such stability, and show that the vanishing of second cohomology implies uniform stability in this setting. This cohomology can be roughly thought of as an asymptotic version of bounded cohomology, and sheds light on a question raised in Monod (2006) about a possible connection between vanishing of second bounded cohomology and Ulam stability.
