Abstract:In this article, we study exponents which preserve complete monotonicity of functions on lattices. We prove that for any completely monotone function $f$ on a finite lattice, $f^\alpha$ is completely monotone for all $\alpha\geq c$, where $c$ is explicitly described. For finite distributive lattices we show that the bound $c$ is sharp. Important examples of completely monotone functions are void functionals of random closed sets. We prove that if $V_{\mathcal{X}}$ is the void functional of a random subset $\mathcal{X}$ of $[n]$, then $V_{\mathcal{X}}^\alpha$ is void functional of some random closed set for $\alpha\geq n-1$. The results are analogous to the result of FitzGerald and Horn on Hadamard powers of positive semi-definite matrices. Also, we study the question of approximating an $m$-divisible random set by infinitely divisible random sets, and its generalization to lattices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the conditions for the power of a completely monotone function (completely monotone functions, c.m. functions) to remain completely monotone. Specifically, the author studies on a finite lattice when the power \( f^\alpha \) of a completely monotone function \( f \) is still completely monotone. In addition, the paper also explores the divisibility problem of random sets, especially how to approximate \( m \)-divisible random sets by infinitely divisible random sets. ### Main problems: 1. **Power maintaining complete monotonicity**: - For any completely monotone function \( f \) on a finite lattice, when \( \alpha \geq c \), \( f^\alpha \) is still completely monotone, where \( c \) is a clearly described constant. For a finite distributive lattice, this bound \( c \) is strict. - In particular, for the void functional \( V_X \) of a random subset \( X \subseteq [n] \), when \( \alpha \geq n - 1 \), \( V_X^\alpha \) is still the void functional of some random closed set. 2. **Divisibility of random sets**: - It studies how to approximate \( m \)-divisible random sets by infinitely divisible random sets and gives the exact rate of the approximation error. - Specifically, for any locally compact, Hausdorff, second - countable topological space \( E \) with \( |E|>1 \), there exist constants \( c_1 \) and \( c_2 \) such that for any \( m \geq 1 \), \[ \frac{c_2}{m} \leq \psi_m \leq \frac{c_1}{m}, \] where \( \psi_m \) represents the maximum distance between \( m \)-divisible random sets and infinitely divisible random sets. ### Key results: - **Power maintaining complete monotonicity**: - Theorem 3: If \( X \) is a random subset of \( [n] \), then \( X^\alpha \) exists if and only if \( \alpha \geq n - 1 \). If \( X \) is a uniform random singleton, then \( X^\alpha \) does not exist for non - integer \( \alpha < n - 1 \). - Theorem 6: For any finite lattice \( L \), if \( f \) is a completely monotone function on \( L \), then \( f^\alpha \) is also completely monotone when \( \alpha \) is an integer or \( \alpha \geq d_{\text{max}}- 1 \), where \( d_{\text{max}} \) is the maximum covering number of elements in the lattice. - **Divisibility of random sets**: - Theorem 4: For any locally compact, Hausdorff, second - countable topological space \( E \) with \( |E|>1 \), there exist constants \( c_1 \) and \( c_2 \) such that for any \( m \geq 1 \), \[ \frac{c_2}{m} \leq \psi_m \leq \frac{c_1}{m}. \] These results not only provide profound theoretical insights but also have important significance in practical applications, especially in the fields of probability theory, combinatorics, and stochastic processes.
