Abstract:We study $6$-transposition groups, i.e. groups generated by a normal set of involutions $D$, such that the order of the product of any two elements from $D$ does not exceed $6$. We classify most of the groups generated by $3$ elements from $D$, two of which commute, and prove they are finite.

Abstract:Recent classification of $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation groups leaves us with six families of groups which are $2$-transitive, or Frobenius, or one-dimensional affine, or the affine solvable subgroups of $ \mathrm{AGL}(2, q)$, or special projective linear group $\mathrm{PSL}(2, q)$, or $\mathrm{P\Gamma L}(2, q)$, where $q=2^p $ with $p$ prime. According to a case by case analysis, we prove that the endomorphism ring of the natural permutation module for a $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation group is a symmetric algebra.

Abstract:The classification of the finite primitive permutation groups of rank $3$ was completed in the 1980s and this landmark achievement has found a wide range of applications. In the general transitive setting, a classical result of Higman shows that every finite imprimitive rank $3$ permutation group $G$ has a unique non-trivial block system $\mathcal{B}$ and this provides a natural way to partition the analysis of these groups. Indeed, the induced permutation group $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is $2$-transitive and one can also show that the action induced on each block in $\mathcal{B}$ is also $2$-transitive (and so both induced groups are either affine or almost simple). In this paper, we make progress towards a classification of the rank $3$ imprimitive groups by studying the case where the induced action of $G$ on a block in $\mathcal{B}$ is of affine type. Our main theorem divides these rank $3$ groups into four classes, which are defined in terms of the kernel of the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{B}$. In particular, we completely determine the rank $3$ semiprimitive groups for which $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is almost simple, extending recent work of Baykalov, Devillers and Praeger. We also prove that if $G$ is rank $3$ semiprimitive and $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is affine, then $G$ has a regular normal subgroup which is a special $p$-group for some prime $p$.

Abstract:We provide a family of generating sets $S_{\alpha}$ of the Higman--Thompson groups $V_n$ that are parametrized by certain sequences $\alpha$ of elements in $V_n$. These generating sets consist of $3$ involutions $\sigma$, $\tau$, and $s_{\alpha}$, where the latter involution is inspired by the class of spinal elements in the theory of branch groups. In particular this shows the existence of generating sets of $V_n$ that consist of $3$ involutions.

Abstract:A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive special lower bounds for $t=1$ and $t=2$ by a power moment method. For general $n,t$ we give a %linear programming lower bound . For $n\ge 4$ and $t=2,$ this bound is strong enough to show a lower bound on the size of such $t$-designs of $n(n-1)\dots (n-t+1),$ which is best possible when sharply $t$-transitive sets of permutations exist. This shows, in particular, that tight $2$-designs do not exist.

On the $n$-transitivity of the group of equivariant diffeomorphisms

Abstract:Let $G$ be a Lie group and let $M$ be a proper smooth $G$-manifold. If $M$ is connected and $\dim(M)\geq 2$, the group of diffeomorphisms of $M$, that are isotopic to the identity through a compactly supported isotopy, acts $n$-transitively on $M$, for any $n$. In this paper, we prove a version of the $n$-transitivity result for the group of equivariant diffeomorphisms of $M$. As a corollary we obtain a result concerning diffeomorphisms of the orbit space $M/G$. A special case of the result for orbit spaces gives an $n$-transitivity result for orbifold diffeomorphisms that was earlier proved by F. Pasquotto and T. O. Rot.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of sufficiently large degree $n$, then either $G$ is primitive and Frobenius, or the proportion of derangements in $G$ is larger than $1/(2n^{1/2})$. This is sharp, generalizes substantially bounds of Cameron--Cohen and Guralnick--Wan, and settles conjectures of Guralnick--Tiep and Bailey--Cameron--Giudici--Royle in large degree. We also give an application to coverings of varieties over finite fields.

Abstract:It is known that the notion of a transitive subgroup of a permutation group G extends naturally to subsets of G . We consider subsets of the general linear group acting transitively on flag-like structures, which are common generalisations of t -dimensional subspaces of and bases of t -dimensional subspaces of . We give structural characterisations of transitive subsets of using the character theory of and interpret such subsets as designs in the conjugacy class association scheme of . In particular we generalise a theorem of Perin on subgroups of acting transitively on t -dimensional subspaces. We survey transitive subgroups of , showing that there is no subgroup of with $1<t<n$ acting transitively on t -dimensional subspaces unless it contains or is one of two exceptional groups. On the other hand, for all fixed t , we show that there exist nontrivial subsets of that are transitive on linearly independent t -tuples of , which also shows the existence of nontrivial subsets of that are transitive on more general flag-like structures. We establish connections with orthogonal polynomials, namely the Al-Salam–Carlitz polynomials, and generalise a result by Rudvalis and Shinoda on the distribution of the number of fixed points of the elements in . Many of our results can be interpreted as q -analogs of corresponding results for the symmetric group.</t<n\)<>

On 3-nondegenerate CR manifolds in dimension 7 (II): the intransitive case

Abstract:We investigate 3-nondegenerate CR structures in the lowest possible dimension 7 and show that 8 is the maximal dimension for the Lie algebra of symmetries of such structures. The next possible symmetry dimension is 6, and for the automorphism groups the dimension 7 is also realizable. This part (II) is devoted to the case where the symmetry algebra acts intransitively. We use various methods to bound its dimension and demonstrate the existence of infinitely many non-equivalent submaximally symmetric models. Summarizing, we get a stronger form of Beloshapka's conjecture on the symmetry dimension of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite permutation group of degree $n$ and let ${\rm ifix}(G)$ be the involution fixity of $G$, which is the maximum number of fixed points of an involution. In this paper we study the involution fixity of almost simple primitive groups whose socle $T$ is an alternating or sporadic group; our main result classifies the groups of this form with ${\rm ifix}(T) \leqslant n^{4/9}$. This builds on earlier work of Burness and Thomas, who studied the case where $T$ is an exceptional group of Lie type, and it strengthens the bound ${\rm ifix}(T) > n^{1/6}$ (with prescribed exceptions), which was proved by Liebeck and Shalev in 2015. A similar result for classical groups will be established in a sequel.

Abstract:We construct a primitive permutation action of the Steinberg triality group $^3D_4(2)$ of degree $4064256$ and show that there are distinct points $\alpha,\beta$ such that there is no derangement $g\in{^3D_4}(2)$ with $\alpha^g=\beta$. This answers a question by John G. Thompson (Problem 8.75 in the Kourovka Notebook) in the negative.

Abstract:In this paper we determine the classical simple groups of dimension r=3,5 which are (2,3)-generated (the cases r = 2, 4 are known). If r = 3, they are PSL_3(q), q <> 4, and PSU_3(q^2), q^2 <> 9, 25. If r = 5 they are PSL_5(q), for all q, and PSU_5(q^2), q^2 >= 9. Also, the soluble group PSU_3(4) is not (2,3)-generated. We give explicit (2,3)-generators of the linear preimages, in the special linear groups, of the (2,3)-generated simple groups.

Abstract:We define a particular type of automorphisms called transvections on a finite finite abelian p-group H-p. It is proved that the subgroup E of the automorphism group Aut(H-p) of H-p generated by those transvections is normal in it, and that Aut(H-p) can be written as the product of E and some abelian subgroup K. The center of Aut(H-p) is also determined.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite classical group generated by transvections, i.e., one of $\operatorname{SL}_n(q)$, $\operatorname{SU}_n(q)$, $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(q)$, or $\operatorname{O}^\pm_{2n}(q)$ ($q$ even), and let $X$ be a generating set for $G$ containing at least one transvection. Building on work of Garonzi, Halasi, and Somlai, we prove that the diameter of the Cayley graph $\operatorname{Cay}(G, X)$ is bounded by $(n \log q)^C$ for some constant $C$. This confirms Babai's conjecture on the diameter of finite simple groups in the case of generating sets containing a transvection. By combining this with a result of the author and Jezernik it follows that if $G$ is one of $\operatorname{SL}_n(q)$, $\operatorname{SU}_n(q)$, $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ and $X$ contains three random generators then with high probability the diameter $\operatorname{Cay}(G, X)$ is bounded by $n^{O(\log q)}$. This confirms Babai's conjecture for non-orthogonal classical simple groups over small fields and three random generators.
