Abstract:We construct a primitive permutation action of the Steinberg triality group $^3D_4(2)$ of degree $4064256$ and show that there are distinct points $\alpha,\beta$ such that there is no derangement $g\in{^3D_4}(2)$ with $\alpha^g=\beta$. This answers a question by John G. Thompson (Problem 8.75 in the Kourovka Notebook) in the negative.

Abstract:Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(\Omega)$ be a finite transitive permutation group and recall that an element in $G$ is a derangement if it has no fixed points on $\Omega$. Let $\Delta(G)$ be the set of derangements in $G$ and define $\delta(G) = |\Delta(G)|/|G|$ and $\Delta(G)^2 = \{ xy \,:\, x,y \in \Delta(G)\}$. In recent years, there has been a focus on studying derangements in simple groups, leading to several remarkable results. For example, by combining a theorem of Fulman and Guralnick with recent work by Larsen, Shalev and Tiep, it follows that $\delta(G) \geqslant 0.016$ and $G = \Delta(G)^2$ for all sufficiently large simple transitive groups $G$. In this paper, we extend these results in several directions. For example, we prove that $\delta(G) \geqslant 89/325$ and $G = \Delta(G)^2$ for all finite simple primitive groups with soluble point stabilisers, without any order assumptions, and we show that the given lower bound on $\delta(G)$ is best possible. We also prove that every finite simple transitive group can be generated by two conjugate derangements, and we present several new results on derangements in arbitrary primitive permutation groups.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of sufficiently large degree $n$, then either $G$ is primitive and Frobenius, or the proportion of derangements in $G$ is larger than $1/(2n^{1/2})$. This is sharp, generalizes substantially bounds of Cameron--Cohen and Guralnick--Wan, and settles conjectures of Guralnick--Tiep and Bailey--Cameron--Giudici--Royle in large degree. We also give an application to coverings of varieties over finite fields.

Orbits of permutation groups with no derangements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. Along the way, we also prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order.

Abstract:Motivated by questions arising in connection with branched coverings of connected smooth projective curves over finite fields, we study the proportion of fixed point free elements (derangements) in cosets of normal subgroups of primitive permutations groups. Using the Aschbacher-O'Nan-Scott theorem for primitive groups to partition the problem, we provide complete answers for affine groups and groups which contain a regular normal nonabelian subgroup.

Abstract:Given a finite transitive permutation group $G\leq \operatorname{Sym}(\Omega)$, with $|\Omega|\geq 2$, the derangement graph $\Gamma_G$ of $G$ is the Cayley graph $\operatorname{Cay}(G,\operatorname{Der}(G))$, where $\operatorname{Der}(G)$ is the set of all derangements of $G$. Meagher et al. [On triangles in derangement graphs, {\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. A}, 180:105390, 2021] recently proved that $\operatorname{Sym}(2)$ acting on $\{1,2\}$ is the only transitive group whose derangement graph is bipartite and any transitive group of degree at least three has a triangle in its derangement graph. They also showed that there exist transitive groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite. This paper gives two new families of transitive groups with complete multipartite derangement graphs. In addition, we prove that if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is a transitive group of degree $2p$, then the independence number of $\Gamma_{G}$ is at most twice the size of a point-stabilizer of $G$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.

Abstract:For a permutation group G acting on a finite set Ω and a point α∈Ω, a suborbit Δ(α) is an orbit of the point stabilizer Gα on Ω. The permutation group induced by Gα on Δ(α) is called a subconstituent of G. Moreover, G is said to be uniprimitive if G is primitive but not 2-transitive. In this paper we investigate uniprimitive permutation groups which have a solvable 2-transitive subconstituent. We determine all such groups G which have a simple socle. The affine case, that is G has an elementary abelian socle, are also discussed and an infinite family of affine primitive groups with non-self-paired 2-transitive subconstituents are presented.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $\Omega$. A subset of $\Omega$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabilizer in $G$ is trivial. By $b(G)$ we denote the size of the smallest base of $G$. Every permutation group with $b(G)=2$ contains some regular suborbits. It is conjectured by Burness-Giudici in [4] that every primitive permutation group $G$ with $b(G)=2$ has the property that if $\alpha^g\not\in \Gamma$ then $\Gamma \cap \Gamma^g\neq \emptyset$, where $\Gamma$ is the union of all regular suborbits of $G$ relative to $\alpha$. An affirmative answer of the conjecture has been shown for many sporadic simple groups and some alternative groups in [4], but it is still open for simple groups of Lie-type. The first candidate of infinite family of simple groups of Lie-type we should work on might be $PSL(2,q)$, where $q\geq 5$. In this manuscript, we show the correctness of the conjecture for all the primitive groups with socle $PSL(2,q)$, see Theorem $1.3$.

Conjugacy classes of derangements in finite groups of Lie type

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group of Lie type acting faithfully and primitively on a set $\Omega$. We prove an analogue of the Boston--Shalev conjecture for conjugacy classes: the proportion of conjugacy classes of $G$ consisting of derangements is bounded away from zero. This answers a question of Guralnick and Zalesski. The proof is based on results on the anatomy of palindromic polynomials over finite fields (with either reflective symmetry or conjugate-reflective symmetry).

Abstract:We find a lower bound on the proportion of derangements in a finite transitive group that depends on the minimal nontrivial subdegree. As a consequence, we prove that, if $\Gamma$ is a $G$-vertex-transitive digraph of valency $d\ge 1$, then the proportion of derangements in $G$ is greater than $1/2d$.

Abstract:The classification of the finite primitive permutation groups of rank $3$ was completed in the 1980s and this landmark achievement has found a wide range of applications. In the general transitive setting, a classical result of Higman shows that every finite imprimitive rank $3$ permutation group $G$ has a unique non-trivial block system $\mathcal{B}$ and this provides a natural way to partition the analysis of these groups. Indeed, the induced permutation group $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is $2$-transitive and one can also show that the action induced on each block in $\mathcal{B}$ is also $2$-transitive (and so both induced groups are either affine or almost simple). In this paper, we make progress towards a classification of the rank $3$ imprimitive groups by studying the case where the induced action of $G$ on a block in $\mathcal{B}$ is of affine type. Our main theorem divides these rank $3$ groups into four classes, which are defined in terms of the kernel of the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{B}$. In particular, we completely determine the rank $3$ semiprimitive groups for which $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is almost simple, extending recent work of Baykalov, Devillers and Praeger. We also prove that if $G$ is rank $3$ semiprimitive and $G^{\mathcal{B}}$ is affine, then $G$ has a regular normal subgroup which is a special $p$-group for some prime $p$.

Abstract:Given a permutation group G, the derangement graph of G is the Cayley graph with connection set the derangements of G. The group G is said to be innately transitive if G has a transitive minimal normal subgroup. Clearly, every primitive group is innately transitive. We show that, besides an infinite family of explicit exceptions, there exists a function f : N → N such that, if G is innately transitive of degree n and the derangement graph of G has no clique of size k, then n ≤ f ⁢ ( k ) . Motivation for this work arises from investigations on Erdős–Ko–Rado type theorems for permutation groups.

Derangements in wreath products of permutation groups

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $\delta_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[\delta_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[\delta_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $\delta_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

Abstract:Abstract By a classical theorem of Jordan, every faithful transitive action of a non‐trivial finite group has a derangement (an element with no fixed points). The existence of derangements with additional properties has attracted much attention, especially for faithful primitive actions of almost simple groups. In this paper, we show that an almost simple group can have an element that is a derangement in every faithful primitive action, and we call these elements totally deranged . In fact, we classify the totally deranged elements of all almost simple groups, showing that an almost simple group contains a totally deranged element only if the socle of is or with . Using this, we classify the invariable generating sets of a finite simple group of the form where and , answering a question of Garzoni. As a final application, we classify the elements of almost simple groups that are contained in a unique maximal subgroup in the case where is not core‐free, which complements the recent work of Guralnick and Tracey addressing the case where is core‐free.

Abstract:A transitive permutation group $G$ on a finite set $\Omega$ is said to be pre-primitive if every $G$-invariant partition of $\Omega$ is the orbit partition of a subgroup of $G$. It follows that pre-primitivity and quasiprimitivity are logically independent (there are groups satisfying one but not the other) and their conjunction is equivalent to primitivity. Indeed, part of the motivation for studying pre-primitivity is to investigate the gap between primitivity and quasiprimitivity. We investigate the pre-primitivity of various classes of transitive groups including groups with regular normal subgroups, direct and wreath products, and diagonal groups. In the course of this investigation, we describe all $G$-invariant partitions for various classes of permutation groups $G$. We also look briefly at conditions similarly related to other pairs of conditions, including transitivity and quasiprimitivity, $k$-homogeneity and $k$-transitivity, and primitivity and synchronization.

Abstract:Let Ω be a finite set and T(Ω) be the full transformation monoid on Ω. The rank of a transformation t∈T(Ω) is the natural number |Ωt|. Given A⊆T(Ω), denote by 〈A〉 the semigroup generated by A. Let k be a fixed natural number such that 2≤k≤|Ω|. In the first part of this paper we (almost) classify the permutation groups G on Ω such that for all rank k transformations t∈T(Ω), every element in St:=〈G,t〉 can be written as a product eg, where e2=e∈St and g∈G. In the second part we prove, among other results, that if S≤T(Ω) and G is the normalizer of S in the symmetric group on Ω, then the semigroup SG is regular if and only if S is regular. (Recall that a semigroup S is regular if for all s∈S there exists s′∈S such that s=ss′s.) The paper ends with a list of problems.

Abstract:The classification of flag-transitive generalised quadrangles is a long-standing open problem at the interface of finite geometry and permutation group theory. Given that all known flag-transitive generalised quadrangles are also point-primitive (up to point-line duality), it is likewise natural to seek a classification of the point-primitive examples. Working towards this aim, we are led to investigate generalised quadrangles that admit a collineation group $G$ preserving a Cartesian product decomposition of the set of points. It is shown that, under a generic assumption on $G$, the number of factors of such a Cartesian product can be at most four. This result is then used to treat various types of primitive and quasiprimitive point actions. In particular, it is shown that $G$ cannot have holomorph compound O'Nan-Scott type. Our arguments also pose purely group-theoretic questions about conjugacy classes in non-Abelian finite simple groups, and about fixities of primitive permutation groups.
