Abstract:We prove that in a strongly pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary, then the length of a geodesic for the Kobayashi-Royden infinitesimal metric between two points is bounded by a constant multiple of the Euclidean distance between the points.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the bounds of geodesic lengths in strongly pseudoconvex domains. Specifically, the authors aim to prove that for a strongly pseudoconvex domain \(D\) with a \(C^{2,\alpha}\) - smooth boundary, the geodesic length of the Kobayashi - Royden asymptotic metric between any two points is bounded by a constant multiple of the Euclidean distance between these two points. Mathematically, it is expressed as: \[ |z - w| \leq l(\gamma_{z,w}) \leq C|z - w| \] where \(z, w\in D\), \(\gamma_{z,w}\) is the Kobayashi geodesic connecting \(z\) and \(w\), and \(C\) is a constant related to the domain \(D\). ### Explanation: 1. **Background problem**: In the theory of functions of one complex variable, Gehring and Hayman proved a conjecture in 1962, showing that in a simply - connected region \(U\) in the complex plane, the length of hyperbolic geodesics can be controlled by the Euclidean length. Similar problems are also worthy of study in the theory of functions of several complex variables, especially for strongly pseudoconvex domains. 2. **Specific problem**: The goal of this paper is to find a similar inequality in strongly pseudoconvex domains to control the length of geodesics. The key to this problem lies in how to handle the complex geometric structures in multi - dimensional spaces and ensure that the obtained results are applicable to sufficiently smooth boundary conditions. 3. **Methods and results**: By introducing a series of transformations (such as the scaling methods of Fridman - Ma and Lempert), the authors show how to simplify the problem into a more tractable form. Eventually, they prove the above inequality, which provides a new perspective for understanding the geometric properties in strongly pseudoconvex domains. 4. **Significance**: This result not only deepens the understanding of the behavior of geodesics in strongly pseudoconvex domains but also provides an important theoretical basis for subsequent research, especially in the cross - field involving complex geometry and functional analysis. ### Summary: The core problem of this paper is to establish the relationship between the geodesic length and the Euclidean distance in strongly pseudoconvex domains through strict mathematical proofs, thereby providing new tools and insights for the research of the theory of functions of several complex variables and complex geometry.
