Abstract:Background: Bioactive compounds from various natural sources have been attracting more and more attention, owing to their broad diversity of functionalities and availabilities. However, many of the bioactive compounds often exist at an extremely low concentration in a mixture so that massive harvesting is needed to obtain sufficient amounts for their practical usage. Thus, effective fractionation or separation technologies are essential for the screening and production of the bioactive compound products. The applicatons of conventional processes such as extraction, distillation and lyophilisation, etc. may be tedious, have high energy consumption or cause denature or degradation of the bioactive compounds. Membrane separation processes operate at ambient temperature, without the need for heating and therefore with less energy consumption. The "cold" separation technology also prevents the possible degradation of the bioactive compounds. The separation process is mainly physical and both fractions (permeate and retentate) of the membrane processes may be recovered. Thus, using membrane separation technology is a promising approach to concentrate and separate bioactive compounds. Methods: A comprehensive survey of membrane operations used for the separation of bioactive compounds is conducted. The available and established membrane separation processes are introduced and reviewed. Results: The most frequently used membrane processes are the pressure driven ones, including microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF). They are applied either individually as a single sieve or in combination as an integrated membrane array to meet the different requirements in the separation of bioactive compounds. Other new membrane processes with multiple functions have also been developed and employed for the separation or fractionation of bioactive compounds. The hybrid electrodialysis (ED)-UF membrane process, for example has been used to provide a solution for the separation of biomolecules with similar molecular weights but different surface electrical properties. In contrast, the affinity membrane technology is shown to have the advantages of increasing the separation efficiency at low operational pressures through selectively adsorbing bioactive compounds during the filtration process. Conclusion: Individual membranes or membrane arrays are effectively used to separate bioactive compounds or achieve multiple fractionation of them with different molecule weights or sizes. Pressure driven membrane processes are highly efficient and widely used. Membrane fouling, especially irreversible organic and biological fouling, is the inevitable problem. Multifunctional membranes and affinity membranes provide the possibility of effectively separating bioactive compounds that are similar in sizes but different in other physical and chemical properties. Surface modification methods are of great potential to increase membrane separation efficiency as well as reduce the problem of membrane fouling. Developing membranes and optimizing the operational parameters specifically for the applications of separation of various bioactive compounds should be taken as an important part of ongoing or future membrane research in this field.

Abstract:The two-stage reverse osmosis membrane was used to prepare pure water for medical use. The pure water was used to prepare concentrated dialysis solution and to prepare ultra pure dialysis solution by ultrafiltration membrane purification finally. The entire process resulted that the concentrations of harmful ions in the ultra pure dialysis solution were significantly lower than the national standard. The residual chlorine concentration was less than 0.01 mg·L-1, the result of bacteria culture was 0 cfu·mL-1 and the endotoxin concentration was 0.03 EU·mL-1. These results have reached the AAMI-2004 standards of ultra pure dialysis in U.S. and can effectively improve the quality of treatment.

Abstract:The obtained plants and by-products during food and agricultural manufacturing processes are sources for many bioactive components that attract industrial and academic interest. The essential method of obtaining these bioactive components is the extraction process by using solvents. The efficiency of the extraction processes mainly depends on the choice and selectivity of these solvents. However, the most challenging step is recovering the components from the solvent to obtain the active part and pure products. In this recovery process, many methods were applied, such as evaporation and adding assistant chemicals, which had many downsides as energy consumption and unwanted product. Consequently, membrane technology such as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), membrane distillation (MD), and osmosis distillation (OD) has been applied as a new approach in concentrating plants extract. Since this new approach has proved its efficiency in this field, the main objective of this paper is to provide a review of academic studies that have addressed using different membrane techniques to concentrate the plant extracts.

Abstract:Traditional Chineae medicine (TCM) is often composed of a variety of natural medicines. Its composition is complex, and many of its components can not be analyzed and identified. The first step in the rational application of TCM is to successfully separate the effective components which is also a great inspiration for the development of new drugs. Among the many separation technologies of TCM, the traditional heating concentration separation technology has high energy consumption and low efficiency. As a new separation technology, membrane separation technology has the characteristics of simple operation, high efficiency, environment-friendly and so on. The separation effect of high molecular weight difference solution is better. The applications of several main membrane separation technologies such as microfiltration, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis are reviewed, the methods of restoring membrane flux after membrane fouling are discussed, and their large-scale industrial applications in the future are prospected and summarized.

Abstract:The characteristics and performance of membrane separation technology and its application in dyestuffs, amino acid, titanium dioxide industries, and in intermediates manufacturing for pharmaceuticals at home and abroad are introduced, and the application engineering of membrane separation technology in fine chemical industry developed by the Development Center of Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology are briefed. Through the introduction of their treating craft and operation results and economic benefit analysis on some projects, this paper elucidates that application of the membrane separation technology in fine chemical industry is feasible not only in respect of technology but also in economics attributed by its advantages, and the integrated environmental benefit with economic benefit can be reached.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology is contemporarily a high and new technology in chemical engineering. It has been consequently developed rapidly in recent 30 years due to the availability of solving many serious problems,such as energy,resources and environment. Membrane separation technology of pervaporation as a novel separation technology is typically energy-saving and cleaner-production technology. Compared to the conventional azeotropicdis-tillation and extractive distillation applied to azeotropic systems,pervaporation process could lead to an energy saving of 1/3~1/2 and decrease operating costs even no less than 50%. The industrial applications of the pervaporation dehydration over the world are introduced,and re-search progresses and industrial feasibilities of several pervaporation membranes are shown in this paper,which cover gasoline desulfurization membranes,methanol and ethanolpermselec-tive membranes,dimerthyl carbonate/methanol and arene/alkane separation membranes.

Abstract:Membrane processes are increasingly reported for various applications in both upstream and downstream technology, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, emerging processes as membrane chromatography, high performance tangential flow filtration and electrophoretic membrane contactor. Membrane-based processes are playing critical role in the field of separation/purification of biotechnological products. Abstract:This study demonstrated the feasibility of implementing of MBR in pharmaceutical wastewater independently, and concluded different applications of MBR in industries. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology was a new wastewater treatment technology with a combination of membrane separation technology and biological treatment technology, which had unique advantages on pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The modified membrane rector design provided a significantly lower concentration of NH 3-N, Phosphorous, Total Nitrogen and COD around the membranes, and subsequently a more sustainable membrane performance due to much lower overall fouling rates. In this paper, the classification and structure of biological waste water treatment by using MBR technology were summed up along with some examples of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment, which was emphatically analyzed and discussed. Finally, the prospect of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment was described. The industrial wastewater was a high-strength wastewater which had characteristics of complicated constituents, high organics concentration, highly toxic.

Abstract:To date, according to the latest literature inputs, membranes-based technologies (microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration) have demonstrated to meet the recovery of biologically active compounds, mainly phenolic compounds and their derivatives, from agro-food products and by-products. The goal of this paper is to provide a critical overview of the on ongoing development works aimed at improving the separation, fractionation and concentration of phenolic compounds and their derivatives from their original sources. The literature data are analyzed and discussed in relation to separation processes, molecule properties, membrane characteristics and key factors affecting the performance of such technologies. Technological advances and improvements over conventional technologies, as well as critical aspects to be further investigated are highlighted and discussed. Finally, a critical outlook about the current status for a large-scale application and the role of these processes from an environmental viewpoint is provided.

Abstract:Membrane extraction is a new separation technique combining membrane separation with liquid liquid extraction. Applications of membrane extraction are described in this paper. Its applications in extracting metals, organic substances, bio products and pharmaceuticals and in membrane extractive biodegradation reactors and enzyme membrane reactors are reviewed respectively. It is pointed out that the key to putting membrane extraction into operation lies in the development of membrane materials and the enhancement of mass transfer. It is also pointed out that the extractor based on hollow fiber is the key device for membrane extraction.
