Compared with the crrnent technology, this new process could decrease the amount of the catalyst from 230 kg/t to 100 kg/t , increase the yield of the pnoduct from 75%-80% to 86.5% and neduce the amount of alcohol by 3 times. This high yield and low cost process should have a wide commertial use.

Abstract:Cellulose, a sustainable raw material, holds great promise as an ideal candidate for membrane materials. This work focused on establishing a green route for fabricating cellulose nanofiltration membranes by reusing a binary solvent of a mixture of ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The rheological and thermodynamic properties of cellulose solutions were thoroughly investigated to gain fundamental insights into cellulose membrane formation using a mixture solvent. The morphologies and separation performances of the cellulose membranes were also studied. Based on these results, we successfully developed a cellulose membrane with a remarkable water flux of 101.8 L/m(2)-h, and the rejections for both Congo Red and Evans Blue were higher than 99.7%. Furthermore, the cellulose membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling performance and stability in long-term operation. Moreover, we conducted an attempt on the recycling and reuse of IL and DMSO, revealing that the structure and separation performance of the cellulose membrane produced using the recovered solvent were comparable to those of the membrane obtained using the original solvent. These results highlighted a sustainable approach to fabricating high-performance cellulose membranes.
Ultrasonic-assisted membrane processes for the systematic purification of glycyrrhiza wastewater

Abstract:A significant amount of glycyrrhiza wastewater is generated in the cleaning process of glycyrrhiza. The wastewater contains polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, liquiritin, and other polyphenols, which is expensive for cleanup and wastes medical resources. To reduce environmental pollution from glycyrrhiza wastewater and increase the resource usage efficiency of glycyrrhiza components. According to the physicochemical properties of the component in glycyrrhiza wastewater, the ultrasonic assisted membrane separation mode was adopted to regulate the micellar state of glycyrrhizic acid and enhance the differences in membrane separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavones, in order to achieve the classification and separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavones while removing organic matter in glycyrrhiza wastewater. However, the efficiency, application, and mechanism of ultrasonic-assisted membrane technology for the separation of polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids from glycyrrhiza wastewater remain unclear. This study presents a green and feasible technical strategy for glycyrrhiza wastewater treatment that was developed by adjusting the parameters of ultrasonic assisted membrane separation. In this study, the systematic separation mode of ultrasonic enhanced ultrafiltration combined with nanofiltration is provided. The SCQ-9200E ultrasonic system was provided for the study with adjustable ultrasonic power, and the ultrasonic frequency was 40 kHz. The glycyrrhizic acid micelle was changed using ultrasonic power, pH, and molecular weight cut off (MWCO), and the separation differences among polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin were enhanced. The optimal polysaccharide separation parameters used in the first step: MWCO 30 kDa, ultrasonic power 500 W and pH 5.00, and the rejections of polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin were 87.72 %, 8.01 %, and 6.57 %, respectively. The second step included the following parameters for the separation of liquiritin and glycyrrhizic acid: MWCO 10 kDa, ultrasonic power 100 W and pH 8.00, the rejections of liquiritin and glycyrrhizic acid were 9.22 % and 40.65 %, respectively. The third step is to remove the low molecular sugar in liquiritin by nanofiltration: MWCO 800 Da, pH 8.00, retention solution diluted and separated twice, the rejection of liquiritin and total sugar were 95.72 % and 3.70 %, respectively. Ultrasonic may regulate the microtopography of glycyrrhiza wastewater with the power intensity of 50 W/L, improving the mass transfer efficiency of glycyrrhizic acid and liquiritin in the ultrafiltration separation process. As the separation volume of wastewater increased from 2.00 L to 20.00 L, the concentrations of polysaccharide, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritin increased by 2.5-35.4 times, 0.6-15.2 times, and 2.4-32.8 times, respectively, significantly increasing the content of index components in wastewater and solving the problem of recycling and resource utilization in glycyrrhiza wastewater.

Abstract:A new technique for separation of glutamine from its fermentation broth was developed by using one-step anion exchange, based on the difference of the ionization constants of glutamic acid (Glu) and glutamine (Gln). When the solution of crude glutamine crystal from the fermentation was separated by single anion exchange column, the highest recovery of Gln was 83%, and the removal ratio of Glu reached 90%. These results show that this new process is effective in separation of glutamine from the fermentation broth and reduction of the cost.

Abstract:Acid recovery from industrial wastewater based on membrane separation is an essential technology to improve the economic efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, the low recovery efficiency and trade-off between acid permeability and selectivity of membrane materials have hindered the widespread application of this technology. In this study, we developed a spiro-branched membrane with semiflexible three-dimensional (3D) network structure by utilizing rigid contorted units as branching nodes. The semiflexible 3D network structure led to inefficient chain packing and the creation of numerous sub-nanoscale microporous ion channels, with sizes that can be finely adjusted. Furthermore, this 3D network structure allows the membrane to maintain low swelling and excellent stability while being enriched with positively charged groups. Ultimately, the optimally tuned membrane separator demonstrated an outstanding H+ dialysis coefficient (up to 108.6 × 10−3 m h−1), good selectivity (42.2) and high stability, surpassing both commercial membranes and those reported recently.

Abstract:In this study, cleaner production ofN-methylglycine (NMG),N,N-dimethylglycine (DMG), andN,N,N-trimethylglycine (TMG) with similar structures but different methylate groups was performed using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). The effects of the feed mass concentration and current density on the separation performance were intensively analysed in terms of the molecular size, molecular structure, ion concentration, and interaction between amino acids and membranes. The results indicated that the optimal recovery performance was achieved at a current density of 200 A/m(2)and feed mass concentration of 6%. Under the optimal conditions, the energy consumption and current efficiencies were 2.3 kWh/kg and 78% for NMG, 2.49 kWh/kg and 69.5% for DMG, and 3.52 kWh/kg and 39.6% for TMG, respectively. It was speculated a competition for water splitting occurs between the bipolar membranes and anion exchange membranes when BMED is used for the separation and purification of large-sized bioproducts.

Abstract:Methionine is an important amino acid can be only obtained through ingestion of particular foods. The so called hydration method is the common route for methionine preparation, which often involves many disadvantages such as environmental pollution and low methionine recovery. To avoid these problems, bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) was introduced as alternative. The feasibility of BMED for methionine separation from its mixture with sodium carbonate was investigated using a series of mono-polar membranes and bipolar membranes (BM) with different cell-configurations. Membrane fouling was investigated using SEM and ATR-FTIR methods. The final results indicate that ChemJOY membranes are suitable for methionine separation with excellent anti-fouling characters. The BM-cation exchange membrane (C) is the most suitable cell-configuration. Following the success of lab-scale experiments, a pilot-scale setup was built and the results indicated that BMED could produce methionine efficiently at recovery ratio of ca. 83.23% and desalination ratio of ca. 95.18%.

Abstract:Abstract Background Glycine is extensively applied in the field of food, medicine, agrochemistry, etc. It is usually commercially produced by the chemosynthesis method, which generates large amounts of by-product ammonium chloride. Methods In this paper, the separation of glycine and ammonium chloride was performed with chromatographic column, and deionized water as eluent. The adsorption equilibrium constant K of glycine and ammonium chloride was evaluated by frontal analysis. Based on the equilibrium-dispersive model and a linear driving force of chromatography, the overall mass transfer coefficient k m , axial dispersion coefficient D L , and bed voidage ε t of the column were obtained by moment analysis. Results At 50°C, the equilibrium constants measured were found to be 0.72 and 0.19 for glycine and ammonium chloride, respectively. At 60°C, the equilibrium constants increased to 0.80 and 0.21 for glycine and ammonium chloride, respectively. The value of axial dispersion coefficient D L of glycine had the same order of magnitude with ammonium chloride and was about two times larger than that of ammonium chloride. Their k m at 50°C and 60°C were 1.30 and 0.77 and 2.41 and 0.84 min −1 for glycine and ammonium chloride, respectively. Conclusions The obtained parameters used to simulate the elution curve and the simulation and experimental results matched well, which showed that the parameters obtained were effective. The results make foundation for further study on large-scale separation of glycine from ammonium chloride by SMB chromatography.

Abstract:Due to the special ion transfer characteristic in ion exchange membranes ,the electro-membrane processes based on ion exchange membranes can achieve the separation and classification of the ions,which have found more and more important applications in clean pro-duction,energy-saving and emission reducing,environmental protection,and energy conver-sion. The ion exchange membranes processes meet with the demands of energy-saving,reuse of raw material,and pollution prevention in modern industries,and have become one of the key components for sustainable development in our economy. However,the preparation and applica-tions of homogenous in exchange membranes are still at infant stage of development in China due to technological embargoes and price monopoly by the Japan leaded developed country. As a consequence,it is of great significance for the development of some novel membrane prepara-tion routes. A one-step preparation route of homogenous exchange membranes by polyacylation of ionized monomers was developed in our lab. The ATRP technology was used to manipulate the structure of ion exchane membranes to achieve the constrcution of hydrophobic structure in the main chain and hydropholic in the side chain by controlling graft density and graft length of the side-chain pendant. The prepared membranes by this strategy will meet the demands of dif-ferent applications. The indutrial preparation of this kinds of ion exchange membranes can breakthourgh the technological embargoes and price monopoly the Japan of leaded developed country and can achieve development of the independent intellectual property rights in ex-change membranes production. The preparation route is very simple and effective with a moder-ate operation condition. The quarternization and sulfonation steps were avoided in our prepara-tion route with a simplified preparation steps and a reduced pollution. Our preparation route meets with the demand of high-effective membranes in diffusion dialysis,conventional electro-dialysis and bipolar membranes electrodialysis. The prepared membranes were tested with satis-factory results in many different processes such as special wastewater treatment,organic acids production,amino acid separation and purification,and heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid ion exchange membranes have been developing into a fascinated new field of research since their emergence in 1980s, because of their potential applications in such fields as fuel cells, electrochemical analysis and sensing, electro-membrane separation, diffusion dialysis, etc. Based on the work of our research group, the recent development of the preparation and application technologies (especially during the latest 5 years) is reviewed in this paper. Preparation methods including sol-gel process, blending, in situ infiltration and precipitation are elaborated, and the applications in fuel cells, electrochemical analysis, sensing, electro-membrane separation, diffusion dialysis, microfiltration, nanofiltration and pervaporation are summarized. Finally, the brief summary and comments on their future development are prospected.

Abstract:Taking proline and serine as example,the theoretical feasibility and experimental achievement of the separation of neutral amino acids mixture by bipolar membrane electrodialysis were investigated.On the base of theoretical calculations of the ionic composition in the solution of mixed amino acids,the feasibility and operation of the separation by bipolar membrane electrodialysis were predicted..The theoretical prediction is in good agreement to the experimental results.For such a system,an excellent single stage separation can be realized by the addition of suitable amount of base to the mixture.For example,a 50% solution of the mixture will be separated into a solution with a purity of more than 90% when appropriate amount of NaOH is added to the mixture.

Abstract:The traditional preparation of sinomenine hydrochloride (SH) requires more chloroform and the steps are cumbersome. The use of membrane separation technology can solve the above problems. In this study, Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the membrane separation and purification process of SH based on single factor experiments of feed temperatures, diafiltration washing volume, and molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) ranges, the optimized evaluation index is the permeability of SH through the membrane. In addition, to evaluate the effectiveness of membrane separation, the recovery rate of chloroform and the purity of crude SH were compared between traditional separation and purification methods and membrane separation techniques. Finally, the precipitate after extraction was recovered. The optimal process conditions determined are feed temperature of 46 degrees C, diafiltration washing volume of 75%, and MWCO range of 1 kDa to 150Da. Compared with traditional methods, the implementation of membrane separation can increase the recovery rate of chloroform by 10%. The application of membrane separation technology not only makes the extraction solution clearer, but also reduces the demand for organic solvents during the extraction process. Therefore, this method represents a green and environmentally friendly separation and purification method.

Abstract:Chiral selective cation-exchange membrane for the separation of DL-α-phenylglycine by electrodialysis is prepared by blending poly(vinyl alcohol) as basic material,β-cyclodextrin as chiral selector and polyacrylic acid as ion-exchange material.The result of single-stage electrodialysis indicates that D-α-phenylglycine is preferentially transported through the membrane in acidic medium and the separation factor is about 1.05,which basically does not change with the ratio between D-α-phenylglycine and L-α-phenylglycine in the feed.Two-stage electrodialysis can be used to increase the separtion factor up to 1.10.
Efficient acid/alkali recovery enabled by only one negatively charged microporous polymer membrane

Abstract:The recovery of acid/base from industrial wastewater via membrane technology is energy efficient and has a low carbon footprint, while demanding high‐performing ion exchange membranes. It remains a grand challenge for ion exchange membranes, enabling concomitantly fast H+/OH− transport and high ion selectivity. This article presents a negatively charged microporous polymer membrane, a sulfonated polyxanthene membrane, which has intrinsic micropore channels for H+/OH− permeation, and we find that highly selective H+ and OH− transport can be acquired with the same membrane. This membrane exhibits a high H+/Fe2+ selectivity of 617 (6.3 times that of the commercial CIMS membrane) in acid recovery and a very high OH−/WO42− selectivity of 649 (the highest value ever reported) in alkali recovery while maintaining comparable H+/OH− transport rate. The results highlight the importance of hydrophilic micropores as ion‐selective channels in constructing high‐performing ion exchange membranes for resource recovery.

Abstract:The transition towards a carbon-neutral society necessitates radical approaches in the bio-refinery pipeline, particularly in the production of organic acids. The current downstream process from a dilute fermentation broth is limited by the extensive use of acids and bases, along with heavy reliance on energy-intensive distillation. In this work, we propose an entirely membrane-based process to purify organic acids (e.g., gluconic acid) from a crude solution of catalytic dehydrogenation of glucose. To facilitate downstream purification, we introduce an innovative membrane-assisted ion exchange (MEM-IE) strategy, which is a scalable process that can protonate ionic compounds entirely in the solution phase. Instead of a solid ion exchange resin, a bulky yet soluble acidification agent is used to protonate the target compound, which can be easily separated via a size exclusion membrane. We selected non-toxic poly (4-styrene sulfonic acid) (H-PSS, 75 kDa) as the acidification agent to selectively protonate gluconate ions and to enable facile fractionation. The proposed MEM-IE strategy can overcome the scale-up limitation of traditional solid ion exchange resins and can be applied to many types of ionic compounds. The versatility of the proposed process was also demonstrated on formate and lactate compounds. A techno-economic evaluation using the Verberne cost model showed that the proposed process achieves an 80 % reduction in energy consumption compared to the fermentation-based process, and the return on investment (ROI) of a 330 ton-per-day plant was less than a year. The proposed membrane-based process for the purification of organic acids, particularly the MEM-IE strategy, offers a sustainable and energy-efficient downstream separation platform.

Abstract:Membrane technology is one of the most promising technologies for separation and purification that is routinely and commercially employed in aqueous solutions. In comparison, its applications in organic solvents are severely underdeveloped mainly due to the poor stability of traditional polymer membranes in organic solvents. The emerging materials such as crosslinked polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, conjugated microporous polymers, carbon molecular sieves, and graphene provide the solutions to address this problem. The membranes constructed with these novel materials show outstanding separation performance in regard to both high selectivity and solvent permeability, greatly pushing forward utilization of membrane technology in organic media. Here, an overview of the most important organic mixtures that need to be separated, the major separation processes adopted nowadays in organic solvents, and the recent progress in new developed membranes is provided.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology is contemporarily a high and new technology in chemical engineering. It has been consequently developed rapidly in recent 30 years due to the availability of solving many serious problems,such as energy,resources and environment. Membrane separation technology of pervaporation as a novel separation technology is typically energy-saving and cleaner-production technology. Compared to the conventional azeotropicdis-tillation and extractive distillation applied to azeotropic systems,pervaporation process could lead to an energy saving of 1/3~1/2 and decrease operating costs even no less than 50%. The industrial applications of the pervaporation dehydration over the world are introduced,and re-search progresses and industrial feasibilities of several pervaporation membranes are shown in this paper,which cover gasoline desulfurization membranes,methanol and ethanolpermselec-tive membranes,dimerthyl carbonate/methanol and arene/alkane separation membranes.
Application of Electrodialysis Desalination to the Separation of Glutamine from Fermentation Broth

Abstract:A new technique of one-step anion exchange for purification of glutamine from its fermentation broth was developed by using electrodialysis desalination to remove (NH4)2SO4 existing in the broth. Adjusting the pH of broth to the the isoelectric point of glutamine, most (NH4)2SO4 and only a little glutamine would transfer from the broth to the adjacent chamber through ion membrane during electrodialysis operation. When the desalination ratio reached 95%, the recovery ratio of glutamine and the current efficiency were 76% and 85%, respectively. After electrodialysis desalination, glutamine could be separated successfully from glutamic acid by passing the retained broth through a single anion exchange column. Experimental results show that this new process is effective in decreasing the amount of resins, preventing the decomposing of glutamine in strong acid and alkaline environment, and in the reduction of the production cost. The total yield of glutamine reaches about 60% and the purity of product satisfies the pharmaceutical standard.
