Abstract:An argument is presented that mathematics teachers would benefit from an ethics framework that allows them to reflect upon their position regarding the teaching of ethics within mathematics. We present such a framework, adapted from Chiodo and Bursill-Hall's (2018) levels of ethical engagement for mathematicians, with discussion of its applications and implications. Awareness of ethical and social responsibility amongst mathematicians and mathematics educators is a newly established field, and yet it is crucially important, if we are to use mathematics for good and the avoidance of harm - in other words to use mathematics for justice, belonging, peace, care, education, lawmaking, building, creativity, equity, connection, fairness, rulemaking and order. Here, we present a way to extend ideas from ethics in the field of mathematics for mathematicians to the field of mathematics education for mathematics teachers, aiming to contribute to this transdisciplinary work and to advance the field further. We also explore links to ideas of equity, and silence and voice, drawing on the consequences of a deeper examination of the entanglements of mathematical-ethical dilemmas for mathematics teachers both inside and outside the classroom.

Abstract:While the consequences of mathematically-based software, algorithms and strategies have become ever wider and better appreciated, ethical reflection on mathematics has remained primitive. We review the somewhat disconnected suggestions of commentators in recent decades with a view to piecing together a coherent approach to ethics in mathematics. Calls for a Hippocratic Oath for mathematicians are examined and it is concluded that while lessons can be learned from the medical profession, the relation of mathematicians to those affected by their work is significantly different. There is something to be learned also from the codes of conduct of cognate but professionalised quantitative disciplines such as engineering and accountancy, as well as from legal principles bearing on professional work. We conclude with recommendations that professional societies in mathematics should sponsor an (international) code of ethics, institutional mission statements for mathematicians and syllabuses for incorporation into mathematics degrees.

Abstract:Mathematics has become inescapable in modern, digitized societies: there is hardly any area of life left that isn't affected by it, and we as mathematicians play a central role in this. Our actions affect what others, in particular our students, decide to do with mathematics, and how mathematics affects the world, for better or worse. In return, the study of ethics in mathematics (EiM) has become increasingly important, even though it is still unknown to many. This exposition tries to change that, by motivating ethics in mathematics as an interesting, tractable, non-trivial, well-defined and good research area for mathematicians to consider.

Abstract:The resources compiled in this document provide an approach to embed and teach Ethics in Mathematics at the undergraduate level. We provide mathematical exercises and homework problems that teach students ethical awareness and transferable skills, for many of the standard courses in the first and second years of a university degree in mathematics or related courses with significant mathematical content (e.g., physics, engineering, computer science, economics, etc). In addition to the exercises, this document also contains a list of projects, essay topics, and handouts for use as final projects and in seminars. This is a living document, and additional contributions are welcome.

Abstract:In this paper, we situate the educational movement of "Ethics in Mathematics," as outlined by the Cambridge University Ethics in Mathematics Project, in the wider area of mathematics ethics education. By focusing on the core message coming out of Ethics in Mathematics, its target group, and educational philosophy, we set it into relation with "Mathematics for Social Justice" and Paul Ernest's recent work on ethics of mathematics. We conclude that, although both Ethics in Mathematics and Mathematics for Social Justice appear antagonistic at first glance, they can be understood as complementary rather than competing educational strategies.
Mathematical modelling and discrete mathematics: opportunities for modern mathematics teaching

Abstract:Abstract Discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling, along with the educational discourse surrounding these, have many connections. However, ways that the educational discourse on discrete mathematics can benefit from the inclusion of examples of mathematical modelling and the accompanying discussion are currently under-researched. In this paper, we elaborate on the educational potential of examples of mathematical modelling based on the usage of methods from discrete mathematics, with a focus on secondary education. We first describe vertex-edge graphs as possible topics of discrete mathematics that are accessible at school level within modelling lessons. Secondly, in the context of a case study, we describe modelling activities with students at the end of lower-secondary education, using a classical problem of discrete mathematics originating from the Königsberg bridge problem. The students’ solution processes for this optimisation problem based on graph theory are described. Their approaches are examined referring to the phases of the modelling cycle, using the method of qualitative content analysis. We studied in particular the extent to which students use concepts related to vertex-edge graphs in specific sub-phases of the modelling process. The analysis allows the required sub-competences of modelling to be identified and the connection of these competences with discrete mathematics to be worked out. On the basis of this analysis, educational opportunities of teaching discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling are assessed. Overall, we point out the possibilities and opportunities for using examples from the field of discrete mathematics to acquire modelling competences and to foster the linkage of mathematical modelling and discrete mathematics at school level.

Mathematical Artifacts Have Politics: The Journey from Examples to Embedded Ethics

Abstract:We extend Langdon Winner's idea that artifacts have politics into the realm of mathematics. To do so, we first provide a list of examples showing the existence of mathematical artifacts that have politics. In the second step, we provide an argument that shows that all mathematical artifacts have politics. We conclude by showing the implications for embedding ethics into mathematical curricula. We show how acknowledging that mathematical artifacts have politics can help mathematicians design better exercises for their mathematics students.

Manifesto for the Responsible Development of Mathematical Works -- A Tool for Practitioners and for Management

Abstract:This manifesto has been written as a practical tool and aid for anyone carrying out, managing or influencing mathematical work. It provides insight into how to undertake and develop mathematically-powered products and services in a safe and responsible way. Rather than give a framework of objectives to achieve, we instead introduce a process that can be integrated into the common ways in which mathematical products or services are created, from start to finish. This process helps address the various issues and problems that can arise for the product, the developers, the institution, and for wider society. To do this, we break down the typical procedure of mathematical development into 10 key stages; our "10 pillars for responsible development" which follow a somewhat chronological ordering of the steps, and associated challenges, that frequently occur in mathematical work. Together these 10 pillars cover issues of the entire lifecycle of a mathematical product or service, including the preparatory work required to responsibly start a project, central questions of good technical mathematics and data science, and issues of communication, deployment and follow-up maintenance specifically related to mathematical systems. This manifesto, and the pillars within it, are the culmination of 7 years of work done by us as part of the Cambridge University Ethics in Mathematics Project. These are all tried-and-tested ideas, that we have presented and used in both academic and industrial environments. In our work, we have directly seen that mathematics can be an incredible tool for good in society, but also that without careful consideration it can cause immense harm. We hope that following this manifesto will empower its readers to reduce the risk of undesirable and unwanted consequences of their mathematical work.

Abstract:The highest level of mathematics has traditionally been seen as a solitary endeavour, to produce a proof for review and acceptance by research peers. Mathematics is now at a remarkable inflexion point, with new technology radically extending the power and limits of individuals. Crowdsourcing pulls together diverse experts to solve problems; symbolic computation tackles huge routine calculations; and computers check proofs too long and complicated for humans to comprehend. Mathematical practice is an emerging interdisciplinary field which draws on philosophy and social science to understand how mathematics is produced. Online mathematical activity provides a novel and rich source of data for empirical investigation of mathematical practice - for example the community question answering system {\it mathoverflow} contains around 40,000 mathematical conversations, and {\it polymath} collaborations provide transcripts of the process of discovering proofs. Our preliminary investigations have demonstrated the importance of "soft" aspects such as analogy and creativity, alongside deduction and proof, in the production of mathematics, and have given us new ways to think about the roles of people and machines in creating new mathematical knowledge. We discuss further investigation of these resources and what it might reveal. Crowdsourced mathematical activity is an example of a "social machine", a new paradigm, identified by Berners-Lee, for viewing a combination of people and computers as a single problem-solving entity, and the subject of major international research endeavours. We outline a future research agenda for mathematics social machines, a combination of people, computers, and mathematical archives to create and apply mathematics, with the potential to change the way people do mathematics, and to transform the reach, pace, and impact of mathematics research.

Ethical questions arise in mathematical modelling problems from two possible contexts. The first question is what values are reflected in the modelling problem. The other question is about the ethical implications of applying mathematical models to real problems.

Abstract:Tractenberg, Piercey, and Buell 2024 presented a list of 44 proto-Guidelines for Ethical Mathematical Practice, developed through examination of codes of ethics of adjacent disciplines and consultation with members of the mathematics community, and gave justifications for the use of these proto-Guidelines. We propose formatting the list as a deck of 44 cards and describe ways to use the cards in classes at any stage of the undergraduate mathematics program. A simple game or encounter with the cards can be used exclusively as an introduction, or the cards can be used repeatedly in order to help students move to higher levels of achievement with respect to the proto-Guidelines and ethical reasoning in general. We present, in Appendix A, a sample semester long sequence of assignments for such a purpose, with activities at various levels of Blooms taxonomy.

Abstract:Most if not all of today's revolutionary technologies have a common foundation, namely the intelligent use of information. It is clear that computers play a central role: but the contribution of mathematics, though less visible, is no less critical. The conceptual tools and insights provided by mathematics are the keys to unlocking the full information-processing potential of computers. Academic mathematicians now have an unparalleled opportunity to make a huge impact on modern society: but to take advantage of this opportunity, mathematicians must prioritize making these tools and concepts accessible to a wider audience. In this paper we present three examples of mathematics with significant social benefit: Dmitri Bertsimas' study of diabetes using k-nearest-neighbor methodology; Development of mathematical software (MATLAB and Sage); and ongoing development of data representation and visualization software to facilitate analysis of survey data. We also suggest steps to be taken by academic mathematicians in Nigeria towards enhancing the positive impact of mathematics on society.

Abstract:Abstract A traditional problem of ethics in mathematics is the denial of social responsibility. Pure mathematics is viewed as neutral and value free, and therefore free of ethical responsibility. Applications of mathematics are seen as employing a neutral set of tools which, of themselves, are free from social responsibility. However, mathematicians are convinced they know what constitutes good mathematics. Furthermore many pure mathematicians are committed to purism, the ideology that values purity above applications in mathematics, and some historical reasons for this are discussed. MacIntyre’s virtue ethics accommodates both the good mathematician (and good pure mathematics) and the ethics of the social practice of mathematics. It demonstrates that purism is compatible with acknowledging the social responsibility of mathematics. Four aspects of this responsibility are mentioned, two concerning the impact of mathematics via education, and two concerning explicit and implicit applications of mathematics. The last of these opens up the performativity of mathematical and measurement applications in society, which change the very processes they are supposed to measure. Although these applications are not explored in detail, they illustrate the importance of considering the ethics and social responsibility of mathematics in society. MacIntyre’s virtue theory opens a broad approach to the controversial topic of the ethics of mathematics encompassing purism, and absolutist and social constructivist philosophies of mathematics, but still enabling ethical critiques of the impact of mathematics on society.

Leveraging guidelines for ethical practice of statistics and computing to develop standards for ethical mathematical practice: A White Paper

Abstract:We report the results of our NSF-funded project in which we alpha- and beta- tested a survey comprising all aspects of the ethical practice standards from two disciplines with relevance to mathematics, the American Statistical Association (ASA) and Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). Items were modified so that text such as "A computing professional should..." became, "The ethical mathematics practitioner...". We also removed elements that were duplicates or were deemed unlikely to be considered relevant to mathematical practice even after modification. Starting with more than 100 items, plus 10 demographic questions, the final survey included 52 items (plus demographics), and 142 individuals responded to our invitations (through listservs and other widespread emails and announcements) to participate in this 30-minute survey. This white paper reports the project methods and findings regarding the community perspective on the 52 items, specifically, which rise to the level of ethical obligations, which do not meet this level, and what is missing from this list of elements of ethical mathematical practice. The results suggest that the community of mathematicians perceives a much wider range of behaviors to be subject to ethical practice standards than is currently represented.

Abstract:In this text, associated with my Felix Klein Medal awardee lecture at ICME-13, I develop a reflection on the relationships between fundamental research and action in mathematics education. This reflection is based on my experience as a teacher, teacher educator, and researcher and on what I learned from the responsibilities I had on the ICMI Executive Committee. Using as a filter the concept of didactical engineering, I address several issues: reproducibility, generalization, theoretical diversity, and values, that contribute to making these relationships especially challenging in mathematics education and point out promising evolutions in the field.
The Mathematics of Mathematics: Using Mathematics and Data Science to Analyze the Mathematical Sciences Community and Enhance Social Justice

Abstract:We present and discuss a curated selection of recent literature related to the application of quantitative techniques, tools, and topics from mathematics and data science that have been used to analyze the mathematical sciences community. We engage in this project with a focus on including research that highlights, documents, or quantifies (in)equities that exist in the mathematical sciences, specifically, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) more broadly. We seek to enhance social justice in the mathematics and data science communities by providing numerous examples of the ways in which the mathematical sciences fails to meet standards of equity, equal opportunity and inclusion. We introduce the term ``mathematics of Mathematics" for this project, explicitly building upon the growing, interdisciplinary field known as ``Science of Science" to interrogate, investigate, and identify the nature of the mathematical sciences itself. We aim to promote, provide, and posit sources of productive collaborations and we invite interested researchers to contribute to this developing body of work.

Abstract:In this theoretical article, we argue that the imminent collapse of earth systems that sustain life forms calls for mathematics education as a field to reflect on and re-evaluate its priorities and thus practices. We consider both what ecological collapse means for mathematics education and whether mathematics education might offer meaningful gestures in response. We explore how the relationship between the social and the ecological is conceptualised in mathematics education (and other relevant) research and what this implies for mathematics education. We read, in this scholarship, a growing focus on the ecological and conceptualisations of socio-ecological relations between existing entities that are dialectical, or mutually dependent. More rarely, are they seen as entangled and monist, and it is in this thought that we locate our contribution of multi-layered gestures of mathematics education. We describe these, in terms of three broad practices: listening for socio-ecological entanglement; attending to the scales of socio-ecological entanglements; and living entanglement as mathematics educators. We exemplify these gestures through examples of curriculum innovation. This article, a socio-ecological gesture in itself, is written in the spirit of opening a conversation into which we invite others.

Abstract:Abstract The practice of mathematics involves discovering patterns and using these to formulate and prove conjectures, resulting in theorems. Since the 1960s, mathematicians have used computers to assist in the discovery of patterns and formulation of conjectures 1 , most famously in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture 2 , a Millennium Prize Problem 3 . Here we provide examples of new fundamental results in pure mathematics that have been discovered with the assistance of machine learning—demonstrating a method by which machine learning can aid mathematicians in discovering new conjectures and theorems. We propose a process of using machine learning to discover potential patterns and relations between mathematical objects, understanding them with attribution techniques and using these observations to guide intuition and propose conjectures. We outline this machine-learning-guided framework and demonstrate its successful application to current research questions in distinct areas of pure mathematics, in each case showing how it led to meaningful mathematical contributions on important open problems: a new connection between the algebraic and geometric structure of knots, and a candidate algorithm predicted by the combinatorial invariance conjecture for symmetric groups 4 . Our work may serve as a model for collaboration between the fields of mathematics and artificial intelligence (AI) that can achieve surprising results by leveraging the respective strengths of mathematicians and machine learning.
