Abstract:Most if not all of today's revolutionary technologies have a common foundation, namely the intelligent use of information. It is clear that computers play a central role: but the contribution of mathematics, though less visible, is no less critical. The conceptual tools and insights provided by mathematics are the keys to unlocking the full information-processing potential of computers. Academic mathematicians now have an unparalleled opportunity to make a huge impact on modern society: but to take advantage of this opportunity, mathematicians must prioritize making these tools and concepts accessible to a wider audience. In this paper we present three examples of mathematics with significant social benefit: Dmitri Bertsimas' study of diabetes using k-nearest-neighbor methodology; Development of mathematical software (MATLAB and Sage); and ongoing development of data representation and visualization software to facilitate analysis of survey data. We also suggest steps to be taken by academic mathematicians in Nigeria towards enhancing the positive impact of mathematics on society.

Abstract:Background Diabetes mellitus is becoming a global health issue which demands a transformation of the research and healthcare practice for better patient management. To this end, the abundance of data and advancements in technology and artificial intelligence provides opportunities for such an endeavour. Aims This review aims to provide an overview of diabetes, artificial intelligence and the current research in diabetes which involve artificial intelligence in risk prediction, diagnosis, prognosis and prediction of complications. Conclusion Artificial intelligence is transforming diabetes research in many technical and organizational aspects. Although its deployment is still limited and is facing many challenges, it will likely impact future patient care by providing automated and personalized healthcare for patients.

Abstract:The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought increased attention to the critical mathematical literacy of citizens in the United States and around the world. A statistically and mathematically literate society is crucial for ensuring that citizens are able to sift through political rhetoric to maintain life-saving procedures such as social distancing and other infection dampening efforts. Additionally, recent civil unrest due to the disproportionate killings of Black men by police provokes investigation into the public's mathematical literacy. In this paper, we investigate adolescent students' critical mathematics consciousness and mathematics literacy as they reason through two interview tasks on the coronavirus and police shooting data. Drawing on Frankenstein's program of Critical Mathematics Education, we introduce an analytic framework for documenting the critical mathematics consciousness of adolescent students. We interviewed fifteen 14- to 16-year-old students as they solved five tasks designed to elicit their critical and ethical mathematical awareness. Our findings indicate that students exhibit very little critical mathematics consciousness in the context of the police problem but show awareness that data can be presented in ways that manipulate the public's emotions in the coronavirus problem. We conclude the paper with a discussion of implications for designing future instruction to support students' growth in critical mathematics consciousness.

Abstract:Key Points Mathematical models have become an integral part of cancer biology. They are useful tools for deriving a mechanistic understanding of dynamic processes in cancer. The somatic evolutionary process, which maintains tissues and can initiate cancer, has served as a hallmark of mathematical descriptions of tumours. Mathematical models have helped in the understanding of interactions among homeostatic mechanisms, environmental factors and mutation accumulation that drive tumorigenesis. Using cell-based hierarchical models of tissue structure, theoretical insights have influenced the prediction of the cell of origin of human cancers, which may drive an understanding of metastasis and treatment response. The temporal order of events during tumour development can be recapitulated using mathematical modelling and genomics data sets. Mathematical models have also been used to explore the role of the tumour microenvironment in cancer progression. Such models help to elucidate important microenvironmental barriers to effective cancer treatment and how to overcome them. Metastasis evolution and immunotherapy have attracted increasing interest but still offer a wide range of opportunities for mathematical modelling. In combination with pharmacological considerations, quantitative models have a decisive role in the exploration of novel treatment modalities of cancer. This includes drug scheduling and the effect of combination therapy to avoid the evolution of resistance. The key role of mathematical modelling in the future will not only be to describe what is known, but also to point to gaps in our understanding of which complex interactions drive tumour growth, treatment dynamics and resistance evolution.

Abstract:As biomedical sciences discover new layers of complexity in the mechanisms of life and disease, mathematical models trying to catch up with these developments become mathematically intractable. As a result, in the grand scheme of things, mathematical models have so far played an auxiliary role in biomedical sciences. We propose a new methodology allowing mathematical modeling to give, in certain cases, definitive answers to systemic biomedical questions that elude empirical resolution. Our methodology is based on two ideas: (1) employing mathematical models that are firmly rooted in established biomedical knowledge yet so general that they can account for any, or at least many, biological mechanisms, both known and unknown; (2) finding model parameters whose likelihood-maximizing values are independent of observations (existence of such parameters implies that the model must not meet regularity conditions required for the consistency of maximum likelihood estimator). These universal parameter values may reveal general patterns (that we call natural laws) in biomedical processes. We illustrate this approach with the discovery of a clinically important natural law governing cancer metastasis. Specifically, we found that under minimal, and fairly realistic, mathematical and biomedical assumptions the likelihood-maximizing scenario of metastatic cancer progression in an individual patient is invariably the same: Complete suppression of metastatic growth before primary tumor resection followed by an abrupt growth acceleration after surgery. This scenario is widely observed in clinical practice and supported by a wealth of experimental studies on animals and clinical case reports published over the last 110 years. The above most likely scenario does not preclude other possibilities e.g. metastases may start aggressive growth before primary tumor resection or remain dormant after surgery.

Abstract:Cancer, as the uncontrollable cell growth, is related to many branches of biology. In this review, we will discuss three mathematical approaches for studying cancer biology: population dynamics, gene regulation, and developmental biology. If we understand all biochemical mechanisms of cancer cells, we can directly calculate how the cancer cell population behaves. Inversely, just from the cell count data, we can use population dynamics to infer the mechanisms. Cancer cells emerge from certain genetic mutations, which affect the expression of other genes through gene regulation. Therefore, knowledge of gene regulation can help with cancer prevention and treatment. Developmental biology studies acquisition and maintenance of normal cellular function, which is inspiring to cancer biology in the opposite direction. Besides, cancer cells implanted into an embryo can differentiate into normal tissues, which provides a possible approach of curing cancer. This review illustrates the role of mathematics in these three fields: what mathematical models are used, what data analysis tools are applied, and what mathematical theorems need to be proved. We hope that applied mathematicians and even pure mathematicians can find meaningful mathematical problems related to cancer biology.

Abstract:Over the past 25 years, there has been an unparalleled increase in understanding of cancer biology. This transformation is exemplified by Hanahan and Weinberg’s decision in 2011 to expand their original Hallmarks of Cancer from six traits to ten! At the same time, mathematical modeling has emerged as a natural tool for unraveling the complex processes that contribute to the initiation and progression of cancer, for testing hypotheses about experimental and clinical observations and assisting with the development of new approaches for improving its treatment. This article starts by reviewing some of the earliest models of tumor growth and tumor responses to radiotherapy. Following Hanahan and Weinberg’s lead, attention then focuses on how closer collaboration with cancer scientists and access to experimental data are stimulating the development of new and increasingly detailed models that account, for example, for tumor–immune interactions and immunotherapy. The article concludes by discussing the ways in which mathematical modeling is being integrated with experimental and clinical studies, and outlining how this could improve disease diagnosis and the delivery of effective personalized treatments to cancer patients. As such, this article serves as an introduction to mathematical modeling of cancer and its treatments, suitable for researchers seeking to enter the field.

Abstract:Biology and mathematics are key lessons in our curriculum from elementary to high school. Biology science studies the structure and evolution of living organisms and is directly linked to human life on the planet. Many of us have been wondering, "Why do we learn Math?" And "Where will they serve us?" In this work, by linking the courses of Biology and Mathematics, we highlight the role and value of mathematical science in analyzing and explaining real-world situations and phenomena. The experiment we conducted in three classrooms of our school, enabled us to mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, to draw conclusions, to motivate us to further research mathematical models and simulations that would interpret real-world conditions and contemporary ones. Therefore, it will help in making decisions and preventive measures.

Developing the UVA/Padova Type 1 Diabetes Simulator: Modeling, Validation, Refinements, and Utility

Abstract:Arguably, diabetes mellitus is one of the best quantified human conditions. In the past 50 years, the metabolic monitoring technologies progressed from occasional assessment of average glycemia via HbA1c, through episodic blood glucose readings, to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) producing data points every few minutes. The high-temporal resolution of CGM data enabled increasingly intensive treatments, from decision support assisting insulin injection or oral medication, to automated closed-loop control, known as the "artificial pancreas." Throughout this progress, mathematical models and computer simulation of the human metabolic system became indispensable for the technological progress of diabetes treatment, enabling every step, from assessment of insulin sensitivity via the now classic Minimal Model of Glucose Kinetics, to in silico trials replacing animal experiments, to automated insulin delivery algorithms. In this review, we follow these developments, beginning with the Minimal Model, which evolved through the years to become large and comprehensive and trigger a paradigm change in the design of diabetes optimization strategies: in 2007, we introduced a sophisticated model of glucose-insulin dynamics and a computer simulator equipped with a "population" of N = 300 in silico "subjects" with type 1 diabetes. In January 2008, in an unprecedented decision, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted this simulator as a substitute to animal trials for the pre-clinical testing of insulin treatment strategies. This opened the field for rapid and cost-effective development and pre-clinical testing of new treatment approaches, which continues today. Meanwhile, animal experiments for the purpose of designing new insulin treatment algorithms have been abandoned.

Abstract:The highest level of mathematics has traditionally been seen as a solitary endeavour, to produce a proof for review and acceptance by research peers. Mathematics is now at a remarkable inflexion point, with new technology radically extending the power and limits of individuals. Crowdsourcing pulls together diverse experts to solve problems; symbolic computation tackles huge routine calculations; and computers check proofs too long and complicated for humans to comprehend. Mathematical practice is an emerging interdisciplinary field which draws on philosophy and social science to understand how mathematics is produced. Online mathematical activity provides a novel and rich source of data for empirical investigation of mathematical practice - for example the community question answering system {\it mathoverflow} contains around 40,000 mathematical conversations, and {\it polymath} collaborations provide transcripts of the process of discovering proofs. Our preliminary investigations have demonstrated the importance of "soft" aspects such as analogy and creativity, alongside deduction and proof, in the production of mathematics, and have given us new ways to think about the roles of people and machines in creating new mathematical knowledge. We discuss further investigation of these resources and what it might reveal. Crowdsourced mathematical activity is an example of a "social machine", a new paradigm, identified by Berners-Lee, for viewing a combination of people and computers as a single problem-solving entity, and the subject of major international research endeavours. We outline a future research agenda for mathematics social machines, a combination of people, computers, and mathematical archives to create and apply mathematics, with the potential to change the way people do mathematics, and to transform the reach, pace, and impact of mathematics research.

Data-Driven Discovery of Mathematical and Physical Relations in Oncology Data Using Human-Understandable Machine Learning

Abstract:For decades, researchers have used the concepts of rate of change and differential equations to model and forecast neoplastic processes. This expressive mathematical apparatus brought significant insights in oncology by describing the unregulated proliferation and host interactions of cancer cells, as well as their response to treatments. Now, these theories have been given a new life and found new applications. With the advent of routine cancer genome sequencing and the resulting abundance of data, oncology now builds an "arsenal" of new modeling and analysis tools. Models describing the governing physical laws of tumor-host-drug interactions can be now challenged with biological data to make predictions about cancer progression. Our study joins the efforts of the mathematical and computational oncology community by introducing a novel machine learning system for data-driven discovery of mathematical and physical relations in oncology. The system utilizes computational mechanisms such as competition, cooperation, and adaptation in neural networks to simultaneously learn the statistics and the governing relations between multiple clinical data covariates. Targeting an easy adoption in clinical oncology, the solutions of our system reveal human-understandable properties and features hidden in the data. As our experiments demonstrate, our system can describe nonlinear conservation laws in cancer kinetics and growth curves, symmetries in tumor's phenotypic staging transitions, the preoperative spatial tumor distribution, and up to the nonlinear intracellular and extracellular pharmacokinetics of neoadjuvant therapies. The primary goal of our work is to enhance or improve the mechanistic understanding of cancer dynamics by exploiting heterogeneous clinical data. We demonstrate through multiple instantiations that our system is extracting an accurate human-understandable representation of the underlying dynamics of physical interactions central to typical oncology problems. Our results and evaluation demonstrate that, using simple-yet powerful-computational mechanisms, such a machine learning system can support clinical decision-making. To this end, our system is a representative tool of the field of mathematical and computational oncology and offers a bridge between the data, the modeler, the data scientist, and the practicing clinician.

Abstract:Maturity and citizenship in a democracy require that laypersons are able to critically evaluate experts' use of mathematics. Learning to critically reflect on the use of mathematics, including the acquisition of the mathematical knowledge and skills required to that end, has been repeatedly postulated as an indispensable goal of compulsory education in mathematics. However, it remained unclear in how far such reflection is possible, even for the well-educated layperson in mathematics. We use different discussions in German mass media on the pandemic policy in the SARS-CoV-2 crisis in 2020 as examples with far-reaching individual and social consequences. The selected discussions build heavily on mathematical concepts such as mortality rates, casualty numbers, reproduction numbers, and exponential growth. We identify the concepts and discuss how far they can be understood by laypersons. On the one hand, we found that some mathematical models are inappropriate, which can also be determined by laypersons. On the other hand, we found uses of mathematics where ideal concepts are intermingled with complex statistical concepts. While only the ideal concepts can be understood by laypersons, only the statistical concepts lead to actual data. The identification of both types of concepts leads to a situation where the use of mathematics evades social control and opens spaces for misconceptions and manipulation. We conclude that the evaluation of experts' use of mathematics by laypersons is not possible in all relevant cases, and we discuss possible implications of this result.

Abstract:In the past decade diabetes management has been transformed by the addition of continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump data. More recently, a wide variety of functions and physiologic variables, such as heart rate, hours of sleep, number of steps walked and movement, have been available through wristbands or watches. New data, hydration, geolocation, and barometric pressure, among others, will be incorporated in the future. All these parameters, when analyzed, can be helpful for patients and doctors' decision support. Similar new scenarios have appeared in most medical fields, in such a way that in recent years, there has been an increased interest in the development and application of the methods of artificial intelligence (AI) to decision support and knowledge acquisition. Multidisciplinary research teams integrated by computer engineers and doctors are more and more frequent, mirroring the need of cooperation in this new topic. AI, as a science, can be defined as the ability to make computers do things that would require intelligence if done by humans. Increasingly, diabetes-related journals have been incorporating publications focused on AI tools applied to diabetes. In summary, diabetes management scenarios have suffered a deep transformation that forces diabetologists to incorporate skills from new areas. This recently needed knowledge includes AI tools, which have become part of the diabetes health care. The aim of this article is to explain in an easy and plane way the most used AI methodologies to promote the implication of health care providers-doctors and nurses-in this field.

Abstract:Due to the shift of civilization from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, mathematical literacy has become a necessity in the twenty-first century. However, in order to learn and contribute to the mathematical community, one has to be in a state of good mental health. When I say 'good mental health,' I mean one has to develop a set of healthy coping strategies, be in a positive learning environment, and have a social support system. Traditionally, universities have been the venue of such higher learning. If these institutions want to remain as thriving grounds for higher education and engines of research, post-secondary institutions need to be aware of these factors and actively contribute to the well-being of its students and faulty. Unfortunately, students do not always receive the support necessary to be mentally healthy. The purpose of this paper is to examine how social awareness and sensitivity of mental health in a university setting is a key component for individuals to flourish academically and grow personally. Several voluntary surveys completed by my first and second year math students at the University of Waterloo will be presented. The surveys investigated the students' experiences at the university, particularly in the Mathematics Department. In addition, this paper explores an alternative way to structure math classes, specifically assignment scheduling, in order to help students develop healthy study habits. The scores for the alternative-scheduled assignments are statistically analyzed and compared to scores of the typical-scheduled assignments currently implemented at the University of Waterloo. Finally, this paper briefly discusses the importance of socialization, specifically for young mathematicians and scientists, and potential consequences of reduced social exposure in the Digital Age.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to propose a new mathematical model for the combined effect of different treatments and lifestyles on the glucose-insulin dynamics of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. The model gives the possibility to take into consideration physical activity, stress, meals, and medications while evaluating or designing treatment plans for T2D patients. The model is proposed by combining and modifying some of the available models in the literature. Simulations were performed for the modifications to show how the model confirm with literature on T2D patients. Additionally, a discussion is provided to demonstrate the ability of the model to be used in the assessment of treatment plans and in the design for robust insulin dose guidance algorithms. An open source code for the model is additionally provided.

Abstract:While the consequences of mathematically-based software, algorithms and strategies have become ever wider and better appreciated, ethical reflection on mathematics has remained primitive. We review the somewhat disconnected suggestions of commentators in recent decades with a view to piecing together a coherent approach to ethics in mathematics. Calls for a Hippocratic Oath for mathematicians are examined and it is concluded that while lessons can be learned from the medical profession, the relation of mathematicians to those affected by their work is significantly different. There is something to be learned also from the codes of conduct of cognate but professionalised quantitative disciplines such as engineering and accountancy, as well as from legal principles bearing on professional work. We conclude with recommendations that professional societies in mathematics should sponsor an (international) code of ethics, institutional mission statements for mathematicians and syllabuses for incorporation into mathematics degrees.
