Abstract:We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two classical magnetic impurities in one-dimensional lattice models with flat bands. As two representative examples, we pick the stub lattice and the diamond lattice at half filling. We first calculate the exact RKKY interaction numerically and then compare our data to results obtained via different analytical techniques. In both our examples, we find that the RKKY interaction exhibits peculiar features that can directly be traced back to the presence of a flat band in the energy spectrum. Importantly, these features are not captured by the conventional RKKY approximation based on non-degenerate perturbation theory. Instead, we find that degenerate perturbation theory correctly reproduces our exact results if there is an energy gap between the flat and the dispersive bands, while a non-perturbative approach becomes necessary in the absence of a gap.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to study the Ruderman - Kittel - Kasuya - Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in one - dimensional lattice models with flat - band structures. Specifically, the authors selected two representative one - dimensional lattice models - the stub lattice and the diamond lattice - to study under the half - filling condition. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Calculate the exact RKKY interaction**: Calculate the RKKY interaction in these two models by numerical methods and compare the results with those of different analytical techniques. 2. **Analyze the influence of flat bands on the RKKY interaction**: Explore how the existence of flat bands affects the characteristics of the RKKY interaction, especially when there is or is not an energy gap between the flat band and other dispersive bands. 3. **Verify the applicability of the traditional RKKY approximation**: Evaluate whether the traditional RKKY approximation based on non - degenerate perturbation theory is applicable to these flat - band systems and under what circumstances degenerate perturbation theory or non - perturbative methods need to be used. ### Main findings 1. **Stub lattice**: - For all sub - lattice configurations, the RKKY coupling constant \( J_{\alpha\beta}^{\text{RKKY}} \) decays exponentially with the distance \( R \) between impurities. - When two impurities are located on the B sub - lattice (BB configuration), due to the large degeneracy of the flat band, the RKKY interaction exhibits an unconventional first - order contribution, which cannot be explained by the traditional non - degenerate perturbation theory. - Through the Gram - Schmidt orthogonalization method, the first - order contribution in the BB configuration can be calculated, and its form is: \[ J_{BB}^{\text{RKKY}}=-a(J_1 + J_2)+\sqrt{a^2(J_1 + J_2)^2 - bJ_1J_2} \] where \( a \) and \( b \) are real coefficients related to the flat - band ground - state overlap integral. 2. **Diamond lattice**: - The RKKY coupling constant \( J_{\alpha\beta}^{\text{RKKY}} \) decays as a power law with the distance \( R \) between impurities, and the decay exponent depends on the sub - lattice configuration. - For the AA configuration, the RKKY coupling constant \( J_{AA}^{\text{RKKY}} \) decays as \( 1/R \) with \( R \), similar to a conventional one - dimensional metal. - For the AB and BB configurations, the flat band causes the RKKY coupling constant to decay as \( 1/R^3 \) and \( 1/R^5 \) respectively, which is the result of non - perturbative effects. - Through the T - matrix method, the exact expressions of the RKKY coupling constant can be obtained, and analytical treatment can be carried out in the limits of large \( R \) and small \( J_1, J_2 \), and the following results are obtained: \[ J_{AA}^{\text{RKKY}}\approx-\frac{J_1J_2}{16\sqrt{2}t\pi(R/a)} \] \[ J_{AB}^{\text{RKKY}}\approx\frac{J_1t}{2\sqrt{2}\pi J_2(R/a)^3} \] \[ J_{BB}^{\text{RKKY}}\approx-\frac{12\sqrt{2}t^3}{\pi J_1J_2(R/a)^5} \] ### Conclusion This paper reveals the significant influence of flat bands on the RKKY interaction by studying the RKKY interaction in one - dimensional lattice models with flat bands. The study found that under the condition of the existence of flat bands, the traditional non - degenerate perturbation theory may not be applicable, and degenerate perturbation theory or non - perturbative methods need to be used to accurately describe the RKKY interaction.
